Mr. Damian Bottaccio
Father’s Day
On Sunday, many families will come together to celebrate Father’s Day. It is an occasion where we take joy in recognising the tremendous support provided by our Fathers, Grandfathers and males who hold a fatherly role in the lives of our students.
On Thursday morning, we had approximately 20 Fathers and some Grandfathers join us for the Father’s Day Liturgy. It was great to be able to host such an occasion. Later in the Newsletter, you will be able see/hear a beautiful song that was played as part of the liturgy.
We pray for all Fathers in the Chisholm Catholic College FAMILY, and wish for you to have a very special day!
NAPLAN Results
This was the first year all students in Brisbane Catholic Education schools have completed NAPLAN online. This was a significant shift in the way our students experienced this assessment. Though, our Year 9 students have experienced the online platform, as well as the trial environment previously. NAPLAN online was a tailored test that adapted to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult – resulting in better assessment and more precise results.
For this reason, the data collected from NAPLAN 2021 provides our staff with important baseline information to better understand the strengths and opportunities for growth of our students and to evaluate school programs to ensure they are best meeting our students’ needs.
NAPLAN results have now been published and are available for parents via the Parent Portal. We understand that students will receive their individual reports in the near future.
I would like to remind parents that NAPLAN is one, point-in-time, assessment and does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress please contact us via scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au to discuss.
Our results indicate that the great majority of our students are either at or above the national average in all areas tested.
- Year 7 Reading – Most students (98%) were either at or above the National Mean Standard
- Year 7 Writing – Most students (90%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 7 Spelling – Most students (97%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 7 Grammar and Punctuation – Most students (91%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 7 Numeracy – Most students (97%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 9 Reading – Most students (94%) were either at or above the National Mean Standard
- Year 9 Writing – Most students (81%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 9 Spelling – Most students (98%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 9 Grammar and Punctuation – Most students (96%) were either at or above the NMS
- Year 9 Numeracy – Most students (99%) were either at or above the NMS
Covid-19 Update
The Premier announced last week a further easing of restrictions – the latest announcement extends to the end of the coming week. Essentially, we have resumed many school activities and parents/adults are able to enter the College grounds. The Face Mask restrictions remain.
The challenges we experience with asking all students to wear face masks is ongoing. The proper wearing of face masks is presenting as our most frequent challenge. This is not just in the classroom either, as the expectations for outdoors are that they can only be removed when eating or drinking, engaging in strenuous exercise, and where social distancing is possible, ie. maintaining 1.5m separation.
We do need parent support with ensuring that students are aware of their responsibilities. We want learning to be the focus of our discussions with students, not providing continual reminders.
If there is an exemption in place, advising me of this reality will avoid situations where students are challenged unnecessarily. No specific details are required, but rather legitimate reasons as expressed by a parent acting on valid information. A medical certificate certainly assists with this, and parents are able to provide if they deem appropriate. Privacy would be maintained at all times.
If a student is not wearing a mask, our staff will ask the student to attend to this. If there has been communication about an exemption, only class teachers are likely to be made aware. If the student does not have an exemption, they will need to put their face mask on immediately and without resistance. Should there be persistent non-compliance, we will contact parents and seek your support.
The College has a limited supply of face masks, but where needed one will be supplied.
Please email any information regarding an exemption to scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au
Later in the Newsletter is a more detailed update, including some of our local areas that have been identified as part of the Contact Tracing. Please take the time to read and address any relevant actions listed.
Finally, as we come to the final two weeks of Term 3, I wish all of our students every success and possibility; all students will be participating in assessment, particularly our Year 12s who will experience a Mock Exam Block as part of their preparations for the External Exams, and our Year 11s who will be completing their final assessment and Exam Block before commencing Unit 3 in Term 4. I also pray that our Year 9 students enjoy and gain from their involvement by attending the Glastonbury Camp.
God bless,
Mr Bottaccio

Public Speaking
The Pubic Speaking competition has been moved to Thursday 14th October and will run in the afternoon from 3.30pm. We have moved it to this time to try and ensure that we can hold the competition this year regardless of any restrictions that may be in place and to give the Year 12’s the opportunity to participate. More details will be given to the students before the end of this term.
Progress Reports
The final Chisholm Plus+ update for Term 3 will be sent out on Friday the 17th September and the Term 3 Progress report will be uploaded to the Parent Portal early next term. Our second Student Led Conference will be held on Tuesday 19th October for students in Years 7 -11. Information about the interviews and how to book will be included when the progress report is uploaded next term.

Mr. Michael Boyle
A Prayer for Fathers
This Sunday is Father’s Day in which we pray for the love and support of Fathers everywhere:
Dear Heavenly Father
Let us praise those fathers who have striven to balance the demands of work, marriage, and children with an honest awareness of both joy and sacrifice.
Let us praise those fathers who have worked to become a worthy and virtuous father.
Let us praise those fathers who continue to offer those children their love and support.
Let us praise those fathers who, despite challenges, have remained in their children's lives.
Let us praise those fathers whose children are adopted or fostered, and whose love and support has nurtured a thriving life.
Let us praise those fathers who, as stepfathers, freely choose the obligation of fatherhood and earned their stepchildren’s love and respect.
Let us praise those fathers who have lost a child and continue to hold the child in their heart.
Let us praise Grandfathers for their love, wisdom and patience.
Let us praise those men who have no children, but cherish the next generation as if they were their own.
Let us praise those men who have "fathered" us in their role as mentors and guides.
Let us praise those men who are about to become fathers; may they openly delight in their children.
And let us praise those fathers who have died, but live on in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us.
We ask this in Your Holy Name.
Amen.
Father’s Day Liturgy
A thank you to all who came along to our Father’s Day Liturgy on Thursday. It was a wonderful opportunity to give thanks to God for the blessings and love of Fathers, Grandfathers and all who undertake a fathering role.
The Liturgy was led by our Student Representative Council, and I want to thank all of those students who volunteered in some way either with roles in the liturgy or presenting the light refreshments.
I am including the weblinks to two of the songs utilised in the Liturgies:
Opening Song: Good Good Father
Closing Song: Not all Heroes wear Capes
Both songs present very meaningful lyrics and are well worth listening to.
Year 7 Retreat Day
The Year 7 Retreat Days took place in the last week and they were a great opportunity for students to feel more connected to God and to our College. Activities on the day included:
- Prayer
- Games allowing students to get to know each other and explore how they connected with others.
- Some teaching about the web of connections in the brain and in the universe.
- A Spirituality Walk around the school, reflecting that we are located on holy ground.
- An Environmental / Stewardship Walk reflecting on the wonder of God’s Creation and our role in caring for it.
- Learning about Caroline Chisholm and her connection to the Gospel in that she understood the message of Jesus to spread the Good News and be of service to one another.
- Contributing to the creation of a Caroline Chisholm mosaic telling the story of the Shelter Sheds which she established by petitioning the Government.
- Hearing the testimony for three young people from St Matthew’s Parish, about the role of faith in their lives.
- Finishing the day with a culminating Liturgy of the Word.
My thanks to all the staff who contributed in some way.
Make sure that you have a look at the photos of the day.
God Bless
Michael Boyle

Mr. Brendan Luxton
The end of the term is near and it is timely to mention the College Assessment Policy. If Year 11 students are going to be away, they will need to communicate on the morning of and see a doctor. A medical certificate indicating ‘not fit for work’ will be insufficient. There can be a significant impact on credits towards students QCE. For further information, the College Assessment Policy is on the Parent Portal and QCAA information can be found here. This will be relevant for the Year 12s undertaking External Exams next term too and relevant forms can be found on the QCAA Portal for medical professionals to fill out.
The QCAA are also chasing invigilators for the external assessment period, if you are interested details can be found here.
Subject Selections Year 7-9
Next week, the subject selection information for 2022, Year 8-10 will be released. Please take the time to engage with the process and have discussions with your children about their interests and hopes for the senior school and when school is finished.
External assessment resources for Year 12 students
To support Year 12 students sitting exams for General subjects, the QCAA has updated its online resources:
- External assessment: A guide for 2021 Year 12 students: A resource to help students understand and prepare for external assessment
- External assessment videos: A suite of videos from QCAA Learning Area Managers with insights and advice
- Equipment list: An updated list of approved equipment for all assessment
- Directions for students: An updated list of requirements students must follow.
Study Fit #5 – Getting the Most Out of Time Available
In Study Fit #4, creating time for study, revision and homework was explained.
Drilling down further, the manner with which this time is used is essential for achieving positive gains. Focused time is the key to ensuring that tasks are completed, and visible outcomes are realised.
- Refer to the Study Plan that has been developed.
- This could either be a chunk of time that can be split across necessary subjects/tasks when needed, OR
- Devoted to a specific subject/task.
- Plan how the time will be used.
- If 30 minutes is allocated, spend a few minutes looking at the learning completed in class. Perhaps there is an assignment coming up or simply the need to revise.
- Set a clear goal for the 30 minutes – “What will I aim to finish during this time?” For example.
- For an Assignment:
- Write the Plan, or one or more paragraphs from a created plan.
- Locate sources that could be used. Time can be wasted here if simply trawling the internet. Be specific – “I need sources about …” Set a target of locating three that are then reviewed to confirm that they are suitable.
- Commit to the Drafting process. Use Read Aloud to listen to a paragraph and at the end, go back and change sentences that did not make sense or weren’t clear, adjust the grammar and punctuation used. Note where more information is needed – it could be that the example or evidence used needs more detail.
- For an upcoming Exam or general Revision:
- Go back through the content from the lesson from that day or the day before. Check understanding of the concept by looking at the worked example and tasks completed in class. Then, select a couple of the tasks or questions and re-do them from fresh.
- Further, go back to the start of the Term and select a few questions/tasks from each week and complete.
- Look forward. Teachers will typically provide an outline of the concepts that are coming up. If available, read through the worked example or explanation of the topic. Perhaps even look at a few YouTube videos to view how the question or problem is explained.
- Create a ‘Revision Guide’. As you work through the topics, create a separate list of all of the essential items that need to be learnt. This could be: a timeline with a summary of key dates, a topic with dot points of essential information, rules or equations and examples of how they are completed, and mind maps or flowcharts that explain processes or events.
- For an Assignment:
The more direct that the available time is used and planned for the more likely that learning growth will be the outcome. You will know that the time has been used well as the 30 minutes will pass by very quickly.
Don’t forget that breaks in between Study is very important for refocussing, but also health and wellbeing.

Courteous, Conscientious and Connected
Students at Chisholm Catholic College are required to adhere to the expectations of our Student Behaviour Matrix (see below).
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/801/student_behaviour_matrix.jpg)
This behaviour matrix reinforces the need for our students to be responsible and respectful members of our community. All CCC students, at all times, need to display courtesy through appropriate language and manners as well as connectedness through following rules and procedures of the school. Please discuss with your child the Student Behaviour expectations and unpack their understanding of what it means to be a Chisholm Catholic College student.
Explained Absences
Parents will be receiving increased communication from the College requesting explanations for absences. Please respond to these SMS and email communication as soon as possible. Of concern is the number of students who arrive late to school. The high frequency of late arrivals may be avoided by students setting their alarm 15 mins earlier or being more organised the day before. Please assist your child to arrive to school on time. As a general rule, we would hope that all students arrive no later than 8:15am.
50 Day count down
Congratulations to our year 12s who celebrated their 50 day count down on Thursday 2nd September! We wish them all the best as they continue their efforts in their studies as they approach the finish line very soon.

Subject Selection Process
Next week, the Year 7 (Year 8, 2022), Year 8 (Year 9, 2022) and Year 9 (Year 10, 2022) will receive information about our subject offerings for 2022. Further details will be provided via email early next week.
In choosing subjects, we encourage students to either pursue their interests or strengths. We encourage students to choose subjects that they are interested in, choose subjects that they are good at and choose subjects that may be required for future study.
To make any changes, students will need to access the Subject Selection Online Platform via the link on their Chisholm Plus + homepage.
Please note that all classes are subject to the class size limits; therefore, we require all Subject Selections to be finalised by 3:00pm on Monday, 13th September. Parents will receive an email after this date with your child’s final selections.
Whilst subject selection choices are important, this should not be an onerous task. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Pastoral Care teacher or myself via email: cleckert@bne.catholic.edu.au
MacKillop Day
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/804/101487.jpg)
MacKillop Day was a successful celebration of the life of St Mary MacKillop of the Cross. Our Spelling Bee was a great success with a number of students battling it out for top spot, with a knockout round for second and third coming down to the wire. Our beehive activity was also a resounding success with Mr De Jong teaching the gathered crowd about the way native bees work, and the students were able to see something that they wouldn’t normally be able to. Thanks to all the staff and students involved in the planning and for coming along, it was great to see.

Ms. Caroline Padgham
This year, National Science Week’s Theme was “Food – different by design”. To celebrate, the Approaches to Learning Committee hosted 2 events and a Poster competition. On Thursday, a variety of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers were planted with the help of the Gardening Committee. Students were keen to get their hands dirty and are now excited to reap what they have sown! On Friday, the students were invited to analyse sugar content in common fruits and vegetables by extracting their juice and using a refractometer. Some fruits were particularly high in sugar, but as they are also high in fibre it would slow the absorption of sugar in the blood stream. Many fruit juices and fizzy drinks contain added sugar and no fibre causing blood sugars to spike! Our student scientists suggest satisfying your sweet tooth with whole fruits for the extra fibre and nutrients. The poster competition challenged students to design their own super food. A display will be up in the Library shortly. A special thanks goes to the Approaches to Learning Committee for organising the events.

Ms. Mala Nair
What are the benefits of Work Experience?
If you have not already had a part-time job, work experience may be the first time you visit a workplace and learn about employer expectations and the world of work.
The most important thing to learn is that you are an individual. You may enjoy doing the same things as your friends, but as you think about your future, it's important to remember that you and your friends have different abilities, strengths, weaknesses, passions and family backgrounds. You need to find what suits you best and what gives you the best chance for success and being happy.
So how do you find out what suits you? Some of your friends might know what they want to do, but it's okay if you don't know – even discovering what you don't want to do is a step in the right direction.
Choosing a career is not something that will just magically happen. No-one else can choose a career for you. You must make it happen for yourself.
Have you ever asked yourself or thought about the following questions:
- There are too many career choices – how do I decide?
- How did other people work out what they wanted to do after school?
- If I don't know what I want to do now, how am I ever going to work it out?
- Who is going to help me start my career journey?
- How have other people discovered the career of their dreams?
- Can work really be fun?
These are just a few questions that may have started to pop into your mind when you think about what you are going to do when you leave school. It doesn't matter if you know exactly what you want to do or if you have absolutely no idea, every student will ask themselves similar questions at some point in their final years at school.
Your work experience employer will have planned some tasks for you to do. They may not be what you expected, and you may not like the work, but the activities will hopefully assist you to make better informed career, course and pathways decisions.
Benefits and expectations of work experience
Work experience should give you:
- an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers
- an opportunity to explore possible career options
- increased self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence
- increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training
- a better understanding of how the school curriculum can help prepare young people for work
- an introduction to workplace recruitment practices
- enhanced opportunities for part-time and casual employment
- the opportunity to include the employer's work experience evaluation in future job and course applications
- opportunities to develop work-related competencies and acquire skills
- the chance to 'try out' a workplace.
Your work experience employer will expect you to:
- be punctual – otherwise you may miss the Bus, or they may start without you (demonstrating self-management and planning)
- be well-presented, when you are visiting their workplace (demonstrating self-management)
- listen and pay attention (demonstrating communication skills)
- participate in activities, possibly as part of a team (demonstrating initiative, communication and teamwork)
- enjoy the activity and learn.
Learning from work experience
If the work experience placement isn't what you wanted, but is the only one available, or isn't what you expected, then there are still things you can learn from the experience:
- What activities did you enjoy?
- What activities were you good at? What did you find easy?
- What activities didn't you enjoy? Why?
- Did you meet anyone whose job you would like to do?
- Did you identify any strengths that you have? What are they?
- What did you learn about employer expectations?
- What training might you need to do?
- Would you like to work in the industry or job you experienced or for that employer? Why?
- What other job or industry would you like to investigate?
You change as you grow and develop and have additional experiences. Your knowledge, skills, interests, even your values and personality, can change. Because everything changes, your way of looking at yourself and at the world around you changes. You cannot expect that the decisions you make now will be appropriate throughout your life. You need to be flexible and willing to adapt to new circumstances.
Tip from the AATIS
The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service (AATIS) offers the following advice to young workers. It is good advice for young people looking for a job - whether it is full-time or part-time.
“Show that you are interested. Employers want to see that you want to be at work and are willing to work hard. You need to BE interested and LOOK interested if you want to make a good impression and keep your job!”
