Updated Newsletter
Welcome to our ‘new’ Newsletter!
We believe maintaining regular communication between school and home is essential for sustaining a partnership in the education we provide all students. The fortnightly Newsletter is intended to keep all students, parents and staff aware of what is happening at the College. It also provides a forum to celebrate the many amazing things that happen at Chisholm Catholic College on a daily basis.
ANZAC Day Services
Last Thursday, our students and staff gathered to recognise ANZAC Day. We were joined by Mr Dave Simmons, President of the Springwood Tri-Service RSL Sub-Branch, who spoke about the importance of recognising the day and some historical points that further informed of the sacrifices that many people have made throughout our short history as a Nation. It served as a reminder to not glorify war and conflict. Rather, he highlighted that so many have committed to protect the freedoms we now have and to bringing peace; they did so not for glory, but out of selfless service, respect, integrity and courage – some of the values promoted through the spirit of ANZAC.
On Sunday, ANZAC Day, a group of around 60 students marched at the Springwood ANZAC Memorial Service. The presence of our students serves to reinforce that we are part of a larger community. I know that we had many students attending other services, some representing family, Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides and so forth – all are acknowledged.
For all of us, it is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served or are serving, as well as their families. Many made the ultimate sacrifice and are deserving of our respect and gratitude.
Attendance Really Does Matter
Over recent years, Chisholm Catholic College has made a strong case for the need to improve attendance. We value the efforts of all students and know that through consistent engagement that success with learning will be positively impacted. It is also worth noting that many of our students own their responsibilities in this regard.
There has been much communication about our target of 90% - the reality for attaining this percentage is:
- Attending 9 days out of 10 or missing 1 day a fortnight.
- Across the course of a 10-week term, this would be 5 days or one (1) week.
- Across the course of a year, this would be four (4) weeks).
Adding to this are ‘Late Arrivals’. Our school day starts promptly at 8:35am with Pastoral Care. We value the opportunity to gather in the morning and sustain holistic learning, let alone to pray and to pass on vital information. I can appreciate that there will be days where traffic or an unplanned event at home could prevent arriving on time, but this should not be a consistent occurrence. For our Year 12s who drive, the need to be on time is even more important as their modelling to younger students is powerful. Some mornings, I am genuinely surprised by the number of students who do arrive late – we rely on parent support with being on time and do appreciate the many families who are committed to achieving 100%.
I am mindful that there is much happening in the lives of our young people and that there are times whereby mental health and wellbeing may interfere with consistent attendance. Our staff, led ably by the Pastoral Leaders and supported by the Guidance Counsellors, will work with families and students. Communication is the key to sustaining the partnership we value.
Regards
Damian Bottaccio
Deputy Principal

Student Led Conferences
Classes will finish at 11.15am and students will be allowed to leave at that time. Supervision will be provided if they remain at school. Please ensure that you have responded to the Parent Slip sent out on Tuesday that includes information about the student departure on that day. Please see the information about the early departure below.
Bookings are open for the Student Led Conferences and they will close on Monday 3rd May at 5.00pm. The link to make a booking can be accessed through the Online Services page on the Parent Portal. The instructions for how to make a booking were attached to the email regarding Progress Reports. This year we are pleased that we can offer both online and face to face meetings and I would like to encourage parents to make a time to see your child/ren’s teachers if you have any concerns or questions.
Students will be able to leave the school at 11:15am. Students in Years 7 – 9 must be picked up from the school if they are departing at 11:15am.

There will be a staggered release of students in the following order:
- Oodgeroo and Flynn House
- Namatjira and Mitchell House
- Parer and MacKillop House
Students in Years 10-12 will be able to walk/ride/drive home if permission has been given on the Parent Slip.
Student ANZAC Commemoration Service
On Thursday the 20th April College Captains Charlie Macfarlane and Hunter Wheeldon attended the Student ANZAC Commemoration Service at the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square in the city. This is a long standing tradition for schools, however, it was the first time the Chisholm has been able to send a representative to this service. The ceremony included addresses from His Excellency the Hon, Paul De Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland and Madeline Francis who was a winner of the Premiers ANZAC Prize in 2019. The speeches were both poignant and reflective of how we commemorate the service of all men and women who have served our country and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Charlie and Hunter also laid a wreath for the College at the Shrine of Remembrance.

Enrolment Update - Year 7: 2022 and 2023
Enrolments for Year 7, 2022 are now finalised. We are unable to accept any more enrolments, so a ‘Wait List’ has been applied.
Already, we have had very strong interest in enrolments for Year 7, 2023. Interviews have commenced and will continue through until the end of Term 3.
If you have a son/daughter in Year 5 – enrol them now. We do not wish to see any siblings miss out on a place.
If you have a family friend or work colleague who is looking at enrolling their child for Year 7, 2023 at Chisholm Catholic College, please ask them to make contact now.

Anzac Day
Last week our College gathered for our Anzac Day Liturgy in which we remembered and honoured those who fought to protect our beautiful land and prayed for peace in our world. I would like to acknowledge students, Jordan Robinson, Amy Day, Levi Shea, Ryan Millward, William Blackburn as well as IT Support Officer Tyson Booth who made up the Catafalque Party.
Our College Captains, Hunter Wheeldon and Charlie Macfarlane accompanied Mr Hodgson to the Schools Anzac Ceremony in the City, presenting a wreath at the Shrine of Remembrance.
On Sunday, 60 students marched and attended the Anzac Ceremony organised by Springwood Tri-Services RSL Club. Thank you to the students who came along to represent the College and also to give thanks for the Anzac Spirit.

Support Essey
Essey Nelson in Year 10, has taken on the challenge of raising money for “Wigs 4 Kids”. Essey states that
“when I was a child my hair meant everything to me and gave me most of my confidence at that age. I couldn’t imagine anything worse than losing all my hair due to cancer and chemotherapy. So being able to give those kids a second chance and more confidence would mean the absolute world to me. Donating my hair to make a wig is one of the best choices that I will ever make, and I hope that it brings some sense of relief and happiness to a child in their time of need”.
Essey’s goal is to raise $1000 for Childhood Cancer and she is very close to achieving her goal. When she achieve’s her goal, Essey has decided to cut her hair in solidarity with children who are battling cancer.
If you would like to support Essey, you can do so at: https://fundraise.kidswithcancer.org.au/fundraisers/esseynelson/wigs-4-kids
Essey is to be congratulated for her selflessness and generosity of spirit. Her initiative is inspiring.
God Bless

Invitation to students to participate in RCIY:
(Rite of Christian Initiation for Young People)
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Youth (RCIY) is a process which prepares young people to explore and develop their faith and to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist). For many and varied reasons we know not all students have received the full range of the Sacraments of Initiation of the Catholic Church by the time they have reached or indeed finished High school. It is our desire to accompany any students who seek to do so.
Most of the preparation will be held on College Grounds with our Campus Minister Mrs. Jo-Anne Ibell along with other staff members. We also work collaboratively with local Catholic Parishes to connect our students and their families to these faith communities.
We are calling for an Expression of Interest for students to take part in this RCIY process commencing later in Term Two and continuing into Term 4. We welcome students who have not yet received some or even none of the following Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. We look forwards to journeying with you.
For more information or any questions please email me, Mrs Jo-Anne Ibell: jibell@bne.catholic.edu.au
Sincerely
Jo-Anne Ibell

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) occurs Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12, Thursday 13 and Friday 14 May 2021. Students in Year 7 and 9 will participate in the assessments. NAPLAN assess students’ knowledge and skills in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. NAPLAN compliments the range of assessment tools Chisholm undertakes to measure student learning.
To prepare students for NAPLAN, Chisholm:
- Teach the Australian Curriculum
- Familiarise students with test conditions.
Further information can be found at NAPLAN.
The Year 10s have started the process of their Senior Education Training Plan (SET-P) in STRETCH. This is an in-depth process of students becoming aware of their interests and goals for senior education and post schooling plans. There will be a culmination of this process in August of this year where we have a meeting with the students, parent/carer and the school to discuss plans and a way forward.

Ongoing Health and Hygiene Measures
We are heading into the cooler months and the presence of influenza (the ‘flu’) will accompany the ongoing concerns of COVID-19.
Though restrictions were eased over the school holidays, we must continue to maintain appropriate health and hygiene measures, including:
- not attending school if sick – this is for staff and students. It is advisable to arrange for a COVID test if your child has any of the indicated symptoms;
- regular handwashing and hand sanitising, particularly before and after eating, and after going to the toilet;
- maintaining physical distancing of adults (1.5m apart). Parents who attend the College are asked to go to Main Reception and ‘sign-in’ if required. For functions, specific advice will be provided.

Goals Calibration
Welcome to Term 2! It has been a very pleasant start to the term with many celebrations and key events already (not to mention the two long weekends!). As we continue our learning for the year, it is important for our students to remember the goals they have set for themselves at the beginning of the year. Please take some time to discuss these with your child and ‘check in’ to see how they are progressing with them. I offer you the goals that I challenged our students with at the beginning of the year as a prompt.

Uniform Matters
Thank you to our parents in the community who are ensuring that their child presents in the full college uniform each day. As the temperature drops, we remind students and families of the Winter uniform options as per the graphic below.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/21/2021_options.jpg)
Attendance
Our Attendance goal for 2021 is 90%. Unfortunately we have not achieved this in Term 1 and so the College will be utilising some additional attendance improvement strategies in Term 2. These include:
- VIP Passes (skip the tuckshop line) for students who achieve 100% attendance as well as a $5 Tuckshop Voucher. Two students from each year level will be drawn out in Weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9.
- Zooper Doopers for correctly guessing attendance %
- PC competitions
- Frequent conversations with PC Teachers regarding attendance.
Please note that the attendance percentage for your child will soon be available on Chisholm Plus and it accounts for the time at school. This means that arriving late and leaving early will be reflected in the attendance percentage.

Year 12 Formal
The Year 12 Formal will be held on Friday, 16th July - Week 1 of Term 3.
The venue for 2021 will the Victoria Park Golf Complex Function Centre – 309 Herston Rd, Herston.
Our venue from previous years, Sirromet, is not able to support the numbers of students we now have. In searching for a suitable venue, we considered a number of points, including such things as cost, size, and distance, etc.
Further details will be communicated in the coming weeks.

![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/26/rachael_lovett.jpg)
To the Chisolm Family,
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I’m Rachael Lovett and I am the new Guidance Counsellor on campus. I work Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and share the role with Jacinta Murray (who works on Mondays and Tuesdays). I help Jacinta look after those students and families in Namatjira, Mitchell and Flynn. I am a registered teacher and registered psychologist and have been with Brisbane Catholic Education since 1999.
I enjoy singing, yoga, reading, horse riding, cooking, dancing (terribly to 80’s music) and dining out. I also enjoy being a mum to two children and two fur babies. I value kindness – towards others and towards ourselves. Sharing kindness doesn’t require any special talents, degrees or money and everybody loves it! I consider it to be one of my purposes in life.
It has been wonderful connecting with some of those in our Chisolm community thus far and I look forward to meeting more of you! Please feel free to reach out to me via the school number if you ever have any concerns.
Yours in kindness,
Rachael Lovett.
SECA Sport
Yesterday saw the commencement of the SECA Season. It was fantastic to see so many students representing the College and participating with great enthusiasm. I will publish some of these results in the next Newsletter.
There were some teething issues, which we would like resolved before next week’s Round. The main points being: students know their activity (emailed to them last week) and parent permission has been provided (via Parent Slip).
- Round 2 will be held on Thursday, 6th May and Round 3 will be held on Thursday, 20th May.
Follow the SECA Competition
Parents and students are able to download the SECA app (available on the App Store – just search “SECA Sport”) to view draws and results. You can also go straight to the SECA website for draws, here: SECA Sport: Home (sportzvault.com)
SECA Reminders
- On SECA Thursdays, students will go directly to their “meeting point” for their SECA activity (they DO NOT go to PC). A table of these meeting points was emailed to the students last week.
- Full and correct sports uniform is required for participation in SECA. This is not optional. Unfortunately, students not in the correct uniform will be unable to attend their activity for the day. This includes socks, bag and hat.
- SECA is an all-day activity. As such, students are required to bring their own water bottle and lunch. Details of canteens available at the various venues are outlined below:
- Wembley Park (Netball) – Card only
- Bill Norris Oval – Cash & Card

Rugby League:
The Titan's Cup competition kicked-off for our Year 9/10 and Open teams last Wednesday afternoon. Playing at the Logan City Saints fields, our two teams met stiff competition from Marsden State High School. After a shy start, our Year 9/10 boys kicked into gear and came back from an 8 - 0 deficit to finish comfortable winners, 8 - 16. The boys attacked well and scored some excellent tries, however the defensive resolve against a bigger opposition was certainly the most pleasing take-away from the game.
The Open team came up against a very well organised Marsden outfit and went down 50-0. However, the score certainly did not reflect the effort of the team throughout the game. In patches, there were some promising signs in attack and defensively there were a number of commendable individual efforts. The boys will certainly benefit from the run, and I am confident they will continue to improve throughout the competition.
This week our Year 9/10 and Open team will head to Coomera to take on Keebra Park SHS, kicking off at 4.30pm and 6.30pm respectively. Our Year 7/8 team are also raring to go and will kick-off on Monday 10th May.
Football:
Draws have been completed for the ISSA Cup for junior boys. Chisholm have drawn John Paul College and Kimberley College in their group. In the Uhlsport Cup for senior boys, Chisholm have drawn John Paul College, Citipointe Christian College, Groves Christian College, and Clairvaux Mackillop College. These games will get underway in the coming weeks.
Chisholm took a year 8 and a year 9/10 boys team to the annual Pacific Pines 9’s tournament on the Gold Coast. The junior team went all the way to the Premier Cup final, going down to Kings College 4-3. The year 9/10 staged a big comeback after being 4-1 down and coming out 5-4 winners in the Championship Final.

Meet the Instrumental Tutors
Andrea Sparks - Piano
I have been tutoring piano at Chisholm Catholic College since September 2019. Students are given opportunities to learn a variety of musical styles and genres, including classical, pop, rock, jazz and blues. Beginning students can learn from materials that incorporate backing tracks in a variety of classical, contemporary and modern, funky styles which help to make beginner practice more interesting.
Students may play for enjoyment only but are encouraged to sit external examination systems such as Rock School, ANZCA and AMEB (Classical or Piano For Leisure syllabuses) to give them a target to work towards and provide an assessment of their musical progress. My aim is to encourage students to pursue a lifelong love of music and develop their skills to the best of their ability while having some fun along the way.

Bruna Felix - Violin, Viola, Cello
Hi, my name is Bruna Felix, a professional violin player and the string teacher at Chisholm.
I have been playing for over ten years, performing in orchestras, string ensembles, and contemporary band format.
Since the beginning of my career, I developed a great passion for teaching music and spreading the love of music in people's lives, showing them how valuable music is.
I personalise the class for each student, and my main goal is to develop the technique and the student's passion for music.
I’m very excited about the music program we will start at the school!

Harry Ottley - Saxophone, clarinet, flute
Hello, my name is Harry Ottley – the woodwind tutor at Chisholm! I have taught and hosted workshops in many private, independent and public schools around SEQ & FNQ, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to joining the Chisholm team.
- Lessons are individually tailored to each student
- Open to everybody of any skill level
- All styles of music (option available for AMEB exams)
- Easy and flexible instrument hire - details available upon inquiry
I am looking forward to hearing from you and making some music!

Zhao Ming - Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba
Hi, I’m Ming, your Brass teacher.
I graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Music (Honors) in 2015.
I have been teaching brass instruments to primary and high school students since 2015, customising the lessons to each student, making the learning always fun.
I have experience teaching the AMEB syllabus for trombone up to LMusA and up to AMEB grade 8 for other brass instruments.
Brass is Awesome. Come and try!
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/37/ming_tutor.jpg)
John Boyle - Learn Music - Guitar, Drums and Bass
By the time the guitar & drums came along just as I was starting high school, I had already fallen in love with some classic pieces of music like BEAT IT and MONEY FOR NOTHING and bands like ICEHOUSE. Luckily we found a classical guitar tutor out in the bush for a couple of years and I was taught to read music as I learned the basics. This became the foundation of everything else I learned as I continued to teach myself.
Because of this, I have a pragmatic approach with my students in that they’ll learn best if they’re enjoying what they play. With that in mind I try to teach them what they want to learn, and fit the lesson to the song; and have a bit of fun along the way.

Year 10 Parents/Carers
Last week you received a parent slip regarding your student completing the Harrisons career assessment tool. This questionnaire will be a key part of Year 10 STRETCH lessons this term and our SET Planning process - it assists students to make educated choices regarding their future.
The questionnaire will be completed during a STRETCH lesson next week; it will take approximately 30 -40 minutes. Once all students have completed the assessment tool, they will be given access to their personal results which include:
- A strengths report – which will identify things the student does well and things that motivate them, as well as things they do not enjoy and tasks that may demotivate them
- A career development report – which can identify areas the student may need to work on for future employment
- A career enjoyment scale - which will list a variety of careers the student may enjoy based on his/her values, strengths and interests. This is a conversation starter/thought provoker only, it is not meant to be prescriptive about what the student should do in the future
Students will be well supported in unpacking the information in their report and applying it by writing a cover letter and updating their resume. It provides them with a new level of career literacy in relation to self-promotion, particularly their strengths and attributes, and is generally very affirming. These reports can be invaluable resources to start conversations at home with your student about his/her future pathway considerations, and in combination with the career work already completed during STRETCH, can help inform the upcoming SET Plan and Senior subject selections.
Thank you for completing the parent slip and for your support with Chisholm’s Career Development Program.
