Mr. Damian Bottaccio
Awards Evening
Next Wednesday, we gather as a community for the Annual Awards Evening, a significant event that serves to showcase the incredible depth of talent in our College community. As a community we have so much to be grateful for and commend all of the students who will receive awards on this evening for their academic achievement, leadership and service to the Chisholm FAMILY.
We are also looking forward to seeing some of our performing arts students on the ‘big screen’, demonstrating the great talent that we do have in our community.
I look forward to seeing the many students who will walk the stage, deserving of this recognition. And to see a willing and supportive audience join me in celebrating their accomplishments.
House Farwell and Graduation
Next week, the 2021 Year 12s will attend for their final week of formal schooling. It is fair to say that they have held their heads high during the External Exam period, seeking to do their very best with these final challenges.
Unique to Chisholm Catholic College are the House Farewells. The House and Pastoral Care structure promotes the development of lasting relationships; there will be many tears as younger students speak on behalf of the other students. The Year 12s will then have some ‘fun’ with a celebratory cake acknowledging the occasion, before enjoying some water slides and time together.
The Graduation Mass and Ceremony ends the week, culminating in the Guard of Honour formed by all students from Years 7-11. The presence of family makes this privilege all the more special.
To all our graduating students, regardless of pathway or journey you next take, we wish you every success in the future. Make your mark and inspire others.
School Fees for 2022
Please find below a link to the 2022 School Fees.
2022 School Fee Changes
During Term 3, a focus for Chisholm Catholic College was the preparation of the 2022 school budget. This work aimed to ensure we can continue to provide the best education for your child and maintain the financial sustainability of the College.
Two main factors are influencing our 2022 school fees:
- A new government funding model which determines our school fees, which is based on student needs and calculated on a Direct Measure of Income (DMI) score, and
- A review of the sibling discount for consistency across all Brisbane Catholic Education schools.
These factors have resulted in the following changes to our 2022 school fees:
- An overall 1% increase in school fees and levies
In consultation with the Pastoral Board, we have not increased the Tuition fees for the first child. Typically, schools would consider increasing this amount according to CPI – upwards of 3%. This decision was made with the understanding that many families and businesses in our community have experienced difficulties with Covid-19 over the past 18 months.
However, we have had to increase Levies, which have largely been untouched for a few years. Levies allow us to provide the resources that support our students and teachers in the classroom, and with the many co-curricular opportunities that we provide. As is the case for all families and business, the cost of those items have increased notably in recent months. Our aim is to not ask for additional monies where possible – these items are listed on the attachment.
All Brisbane Catholic Education schools have been asked to adjust the discounted amount afforded to siblings. The consistent discount is as follows:
- 1st child 100% tuition fees charged
- 2nd child 60% tuition fees charged
- 3rd child 40% tuition fees charged
- 4th child 20% tuition fees charged
- Additional children no tuition fee charged
For Chisholm Catholic College, we have sought to ensure that School Fees and Levies are not increased to the point that they become unaffordable. In fact, even with the increases that need to be made, we are able to provide considerable opportunities for our students; we are very proud of this fact.
To progress our sibling discount to the level outlined above, we have decided to incrementally increase over the coming three (3) years. For 2022, this would see the second sibling being increased by an additional $152 (approx.) and the third sibling by $76 (approx.).
We appreciate that an increase in fees can be difficult for some families. If you have any concerns about the 2022 school fees, please contact the College to discuss your family’s circumstances.
2022 Next Step Survey
The Queensland Government will conduct its annual statewide survey of Year 12 completers in 2022. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between March and June next year, our current Year 12 students will receive a letter from the Minister for Education or an email or phone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office inviting you to complete the survey. To enable them to reach you, please ensure your contact details are correct in your learning account by logging into the student portal at the link below.

Mr. Brendan Luxton
As the school year draws to a close there is already extensive planning underway for 2022. In recent weeks I have had a number of enquiries about subjects for next year and or making subject changes for next year. I would like to take this opportunity to emphasise that at the beginning of this process I stressed the need to take care as we create a timetable based on your choices. Not all subjects are viable to run unfortunately which means we then take into account reserve allocations. Next week I will communicate with students what they have been allocated for next year.
You are asked to please check allocations carefully. If you need to discuss any matter, please make an appointment with me by contacting Mrs Langton. Students following this process will be prioritised. Some subjects are full or close to full so making any changes may be difficult.
As assessment approaches for other year levels, can I please remind you that we have an assessment policy which can be found on the parent portal. Some key takeaways:
If you are away on the day an assignment is due you are still expected to submit via TurnItIn.
Please be in contact the morning of an exam if you are absent due to illness, a medical certificate is beneficial in this instance.
We do not do make up exams if you are taking a family holiday.

Farewell to our Year 12s
By the time that you are reading this newsletter, our Year 12s will have less than one week until they Graduate. We wish the Class of 2021 all the very best for their futures. Next week, we look forward to recognising their contribution to and stewardship of the College. There will be significant celebrations and farewells from peers and staff as we wish our Seniors the best of luck.

Breaking Vaping
I have communicated in previous newsletters the concerns associated with vaping for our young people. The harms and potential harms linked with vaping are significant and some, still unexplored and explained. These concerns and harms are evident more than ever and I am afraid to say that we are not winning the war against vaping. We need the help of our Chisholm Family.
In the instances where students have been caught vaping at school, the majority of our parents reported having ‘no idea’ that their child was vaping. Please have the conversation with your child (regardless of the year level they are in) and explore what your child knows about vaping and gage their involvement (if any). You will see on the link below that the prevalence is very concerning among teenagers.
Australia's vaping laws and the crackdown on nicotine products (9news.com.au)
Until recently, there has been a large ‘black market’ where vapes could be easily purchased and accessed in bulk orders and then distributed and on sold to our young people. The new legislation from 1st October has prohibited the online purchasing of eCigarettes and a medical prescription is now required. Whilst vapes containing liquid nicotine are illegal, this seems to not be the strong deterrent that we would hope. We need your help with the education of our young people… your children. This week, students have received the information linked below and we ask you to please engage with it and start the conversation with your child at home.
In Queensland, electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette products containing nicotine are illegal unless on prescription and supplied from a pharmacist or through Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) processes.

Parents are reminded to complete the permission slip and make payment for this excursion by Monday, 22nd November.
Online Safety Act 2021 – eSafety Commissioner
Under 'Community News' is a letter from MP - Bert Van Manen explaining the expansion of support from the eSafety Commissioner regarding online image sharing/threats/bullying. This is good news for our families as from January 2022, the eSafety Commissioner will be able to act swiftly and forcefully to those who engage in a cyber offence. There will be a reduction in take down times (from 48 hours to 24 hours) and penalties/fine increases up to $111,000 for individuals and $555,000 for companies.
For more information, please see the letter below.
Please also access the eSafety Commissioner website here.
Attendance
The College attendance rate is looking healthy this term! We thank the parents who enter explanations for absences in the Parent Portal/BCE Connect App. Please continue this good practice as all absences require explanations. Please also remember that attendance data is updated on Chisholm Plus every 3 weeks. Expect the update this week 😊.
ICAS Mathematics
On Tuesday, 2nd November 61 students from Years 7 – 11 took part in the ICAS Mathematics Competition. This was comprised of 40 mostly multiple choice questions based around the students’ age appropriate Maths curriculum. Questions started out easy and became progressively harder as the test progressed. Feedback from the students indicated that it was both an enjoyable and challenging experience.
We look forward to hearing the results in early December and will be presenting certificates to participants early next year. Congratulations to all of the students who took part, and many thanks to the Mathematics teachers who helped organise and prepare the students for the competition.

Professional Musicians, Kyle Mercado, Tina Bangel and Instrumental Tutors Workshops!
This term, the Senior Music classes and One AChord Vocal Ensemble have experienced and participated in workshops that have inspired and encouraged them to develop their passion for music. These opportunities have benefitted the students in their musical skills as well as in their personal development in preparing for performances and the discipline of practicing and rehearsing.
Recently, Kyle Mercado, a professional musician as a session bassist, musical director and arranger for famous musicians and Tina Bangel, a vocal coach, professional singer, children's book author conducted separate online delivery sessions and shared techniques, sound advice and tips on being involved in the Music Industry as well as their experiences and expertise.
Our Instrumental Tutors, Mauricio Hosi - guitar tutor, Harry Ottley - saxophone, clarinet and flute tutor, and Ming Zhao - trombone tutor also conducted a hands-on experience with their instruments. In a safe way, students were able to try playing with the instruments offered and played some tunes. This has encouraged them to even learn new instruments!
The session provided an avenue for our students to reflect on what they can do with their talent now and for the future. Here are some feedbacks from our year 11 students:
"The workshop with Kyle Mercado was inspiring and really helpful. I liked how he showed us his experiences and clips of him performing with Jessica Mauboy, Delta Goodrem, playing in the orchestra pit in the Sydney's Musical 'Hamilton' and more! I found it really interesting. It was very useful of him to talk about how he got to where he is now.
He also conducted an Aural analysis, which I found very interesting and helpful. I’m glad he spoke about the insight of the music industry in the real world and it's just good to get a perspective from a professional. We thank Kyle, and really appreciate him for taking his time to talk with us. He has made us to be inspired to try and get to where we want to be in the future." - Mia Shadbolt
"It was an awesome experience hearing from Kyle, and hearing all about his work and what it is like being in the music industry. He explained that music can be a full-time career, sometimes, even if it does not need tertiary study, but that hard work does pay off. The year 11 class enjoyed and learned plenty from Kyle’s presentation." - Gerry Jaimes and Georgia McKenzie
"The instrumental workshop was honestly very mind opening. I didn’t think I would enjoy learning any other instruments than I already know, but I really did like learning all about them. Some of them I even thought about learning later on in the future. Thank you for showing me what else is out there!" - Sierriah Lee-Andrews
"For week 3 and 5, One AChord Vocal Ensemble had a great opportunity of being part of a one-on-one online session with Tina Bangel. For those you don’t know her, Tina Bangel is an accomplished singer and mentor based in Sydney who has achieved incredible things like writing her own book and being a founder of a music school. As a choir, we surrounded the TV and was able to communicate to Tina on the screen. I personally loved the session and would be so happy to have another session with Tina or even better meeting her in person. She is so experienced in her craft and her lessons are inspiring. She gave us strategies to boost our confidence while singing, explained where a career in music can take us and taught us how important it is to always work towards our dream. I loved the experience overall and I am so grateful to Ms Picart who arranged the meeting." - Paulene Cezar
"Some of us from One AChord Vocal Ensemble participated in a workshop with Ms Tina Bangel, who is an extremely experienced vocal teacher and kindly taught us some useful tips and techniques to improving our voices. She went through various aspects of performing, including breathing, projecting your voice, having stage presence and more. We gained some very valuable advice that will be helpful in future performances and rehearsals!" - Alisha Hill

Art Exhibition Winners
Congratulations to this year’s People’s Choice Award Winners - Jorja Stein and Ruby Bartolic.
Jorja’s Stein’s work titled ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ has earned her the senior People’s Choice Award. Her sculpture encourages us to consider that the very centre of our being is pure, the true essence of life that makes more than human. Sacred geometry within the centre of the cast is the pattern that all life is built upon, it is God.
Ruby Bartolic from Year 9 who created a mask inspired by Croatian culture, especially the Zvoncari festival that happens yearly in a town in Croatia, this festival is based on the traditions of sheep shearing and wolves.
Both students were awarded a trophy and prize pack from either School Art Supplies or Oxlades Art Supplies. A special thank you to these companies who generously donated prize packs.

Employers' use of the VET system increases
Data released by National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) from 2021 Survey of Employers’ Use and Views of the VET System, found that 56.6% of Australian employers engaged with accredited training through the vocational education and training (VET) system in 2021. Despite the many challenges employers have faced during the pandemic, their satisfaction with accredited training remains high, with over half of them choosing and adjusting training needs to meet the demands of the changing workforce.
