Chisholm Day – Happy Birthday!
We celebrated Caroline Chisholm’s birthday yesterday , but much of the fun was on Friday with Chisholm Day. And what a celebration it was!
In our Catholic tradition, we began the day with a Eucharistic Celebration. We were blessed to have Fr John Conway (Logan Deanery) and Fr Richard Tomelty (St Matthew’s Parish Priest) preside and provide wonderful leadership over the celebration – engaging with our students authentically and sincerely.
I must give a massive ‘shout out’ to our students. They engaged so well and this culminated in the singing of the College song – I’ve never heard it sung with such volume and pride. A definite highlight for me!
The celebrations then saw the students participate in the various rides and activities, spending time with each other and simply having fun! Again, the way that they lived the spirit of the occasion was the best I have seen in my time at the College. The announcement of the Chisholm Day ‘House Spirit’ Cup will be held over until Thursday’s College Assembly – it is a very close race between the Houses!
The evening came and though it was a slow start, the number of people who attended was simply amazing. We are very thankful for the support of our guest performers – St Edward’s Catholic Primary School Choir, FAD Cheer and Dance and Karen Spencer School of Dance. Their performances connected with those of our students to bring wonderful entertainment for all to experience.
A huge thank you to the many parents who volunteered their time on or prior to Chisholm Day. The support was simply amazing and added to the occasion – we are very thankful for the role played on this special day. A special ‘shout out’ to the Executive of Parents and Community Association (PCA) who coordinated a Hot Dog stall. They were supported in their efforts by Coles (Loganholme), Woolworths (Cornubia) and Bakers Delight (Loganholme) who donated products that were sold during the day.
I’d also like to acknowledge our sponsors:
Bronze:
o Abacus Taxation
o Reid Smash and Custom Garage
Silver:
o Belle Property, Cornubia
o Elvarl Hair Artistry
o Manage My Bookkeeping
o Rams, Springwood
Gold:
o Image Select
Their support ensured that we were able to make the day as successful as it was. Of special mention, Image Select sponsored the fireworks display that brought a very colourful and energetic end to the day.

Covid-19 Update – Cases in the Community and Close Contact Requirements
The safety and wellbeing of our students continues to be a key priority for staff at the College. In line with the current requirements, we are sharing this news with parents and carers to ensure you are informed of all relevant information so that you can monitor the health of your child/children.
For Close Contacts, there are no quarantine requirements as long as they:
- do not have COVID-19 symptoms
- test negative every second day for a week from the day of becoming a close contact (day 0, 2, 4 and 6)
- wear a mask outside of home for 7 days
- do not visit any vulnerable settings (hospitals, residential aged care facilities, disability accommodation services, corrective services facilities and detention centres) for 7 days
With regards to the RATs. We are not required to provide these to students or staff. And, there is no need for the results to be shared with staff at the College.
The RATs that we have will continue to be provided to students, should they attend school and present as symptomatic. A parent would be contacted to collect the student and the supplied RAT Test – we would not in any circumstance test a student.
Queensland Health Directions regarding isolation indicates that anyone who has completed their period of isolation MUST wear a face mask for seven (7) days. This applies to both individuals who have been Diagnosed with Covid and Close Contacts. This will likely cause some frustration; however, we do ask for the support in maintaining this requirement. This is explained on the Queensland Health website.
It is recommended that all students, parents and staff entering the College wear a face mask; this is a recommendation not a mandate.
We are conscious that we need to support each other by maintaining calm. The reality is that COVID-19 is active in the area and we, along with other schools, are prepared to respond should there be any notable increases. Authorities have not required us to take any further action at this time at a school level.
As COVID-19 remains active in our community we ask you to continue to monitor your child’s/children’s health and if they develop any flu-like symptoms or unwell:
- Keep your child/children at home
- Seek a PCR or Rapid Antigen test where it is recommended
- Follow the advice of Queensland Health.
If your child tests positive please inform the College by emailing scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au so we can support the student and take any necessary action at a school level.
As we continue to navigate the pandemic, please remind your child/ren to:
- maintain good hand hygiene at all times
- cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of their elbow and dispose of tissues in the bin immediately
- practise social distancing from others where possible
The College will continue to:
- sustain the additional cleaning effort to our sick rooms and student areas, and other high-touch point surfaces.
- review ventilation in our classrooms, ensuring good airflow in learning spaces using natural and mechanical ventilation.
- provide free Rapid Antigen Tests to students with symptoms while at school, to be administered at home once you collect your student.
- apply COVID risk management to excursions, camps, sporting and cultural activities or in accordance with COVID-safe plans where applicable.
As it is likely that the school will continue to be impacted by cases of COVID-19 in the future, we will be updating the school community about further developments on a regular basis by including information about the presence of cases within the school community via our fortnightly College Newsletter or through other communications where required, such as email or BCE Connect App. Please ensure that you keep up to date with this important information.
We will continue to work closely with health authorities to keep our school community informed of any developments and advice.

Assistant Principal Religious Education's News
Caroline Chisholm’s Birthday
As the countdown to Chisholm Day continued, the sense of excitement was contagious. Students were busily planning their House activities, discussing which rides they would try first or which stalls they would visit for tea. Others were looking forward to the fireworks, the baby animals at the petting zoo, or even dunking their favourite teacher. It was be a splendid 30-year celebration indeed! However, we must not lose sight of the meaning behind Chisholm Day, that is celebrating our College patron Caroline Chisholm’s birthday which fell on Monday, May 30th. Caroline Chisholm is truly a role model for our community, she worked tirelessly for the welfare of all. This was even more impressive as she did so at a time when women had little to no status in society. Caroline profoundly responded to God’s call and lived this out in her life on a daily basis. She was not a religious sister, but an ordinary person like you and I. As we celebrate Chisholm Day, I invite you to consider connecting with Caroline’s quote and image below. You may wish to use the questions prepared by our Campus Minister to guide your own personal meditation or reflection.
Year 11 Retreat
It was wonderful to see our students engage with our Year 11 Retreat Day, in their preparation on the journey towards leadership. There will be more opportunities for our students to continue the leadership process into next term. Below are some accounts from our students on the day.
For the Year 11 retreat we had the amazing team from LYQ come in and help us understand aspects of leadership. The 'Blue Shirt Crew' was super fun and they were so helpful in us learning what it truly is to be a good leader. We played a heap of great games and had some team building activities that encouraged us to work together. It was a really awesome day and I think everyone in the grade really enjoyed it.
The Year 11 retreat was an insightful and fun experience into what leadership truly means to us. What we learned on that day was profound and enlightening. The instructors truly were delightful and really helped guide and support conversation.
The Year 11 retreat was an insightful day opening our minds to have a deeper understanding of what leadership entails. Various activities were conducted that enthused the cohort and challenged us in our teamwork.
Casual Dress Day
To kickstart our St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeaql and to raise awareness during Wellness Week, the College will be hosting a Casual Dress Day on Tuesday, 14th June. Students are encouraged to wear casual clothes or their PE Uniform for a gold coin donation. This donation will assist the St Vincent De Paul Society in providing emergency relief to people experiencing homelessness and domestic violence this Winter.
Enrolment Update – Year 7: 2023 and 2024
Enrolment interviews for Year 7, 2023 are now completed. We are unable to accept any more enrolments, so a ‘Wait List’ has been applied.
Already, we have had very strong interest in enrolments for Year 7, 2024. Interviews have commenced and will continue through to the end of Term 3.
If you have a son/daughter in Year 5 – enrol them now. We are conscious that there will be many current families who have a sibling that would be entering Year 7 in 2024. Unless their specific details were included when enrolling their older siblings, we will not know and are unable to communicate directly with you. We do not wish to see any siblings miss out on a place. Please do not assume that a place would be made available, enrol now.
If you have a family friend or work colleague who is looking at enrolling their child for Year 7, 2024 at Chisholm Catholic College, please ask them to make contact now.
Chisholm Bus 1 Springwood and Chisholm Bus 2 Redlands
To assist the drivers and maintain the bus schedule, your student is asked to use their Chisholm Bus Card to tap on/off each trip. Please remind your student to keep the card in their school bags.
Did you know you can download the app Roll Call to check if your student has tapped on/off the bus. You can also monitor the location of the bus, which is useful in the mornings to check if you have missed the bus or it is delayed due to traffic or bad weather.
Information on how to download the parent app has been issued via an email from Roll Call.
If you require this link sent to you again, please notify chisholmbus@bne.catholic.edu.au.
If you require a seat on either the Chisholm Bus 1 Springwood or Chisholm Bus 2 Redlands for your student/s please send an email to ChisholmBus@bne.catholic.edu.au and list your students name, days required and if morning or afternoon. The cost is $3 per trip and payable for the Term in advance. There are very limited seats available.
Assistant Principal - Curriculum's News
It seems we are rolling from one big health issue in society to the next and are facing a flu that is nasty this year! We certainly have had some practice dealing with illness and disruptions over the last couple of years. I would like to refer you to the Assessment Policy which can be found on the parent portal. If in doubt, please be in contact with us before assessments are due, communication is the best way to be ahead of any issues. A number of Year 11 students have reached out recently to change subjects. As we have completed Unit 1 in many of the General subjects, it is a good time to have a discussion about making that change. We had a thorough process last year with SET Planning and any changes need to be considered in reference to the discussions we had last year.
Earlier last week we shared a study skills workshop with junior parents. Some of the information shared is relevant to all year levels and key points are as follows:
What if I do not have any homework?
- Students are expected to spend time each night revising what the work that had been covered that day. The learning intentions and success criteria are very useful for this.
- The time spent should be appropriate for their year level and for the subject.
- If you child is spending too much time completing homework, please let the teacher know.
Study Techniques:
Study for exams
- Flash Cards- Memorisation
- Glossary- Memorisation and developing clear and concise communication
- Timelines- HASS, Religion, when studying historical events or findings, such as evolution.
- Mind Maps
- Using Learning Intentions and Success Criteria - should form part of their ongoing revision throughout the term.
Assignments
- Starting early
- Spend time on understanding the task- great opportunity to ask your child what it is that they will be doing.
- Plan how to approach the assignment- what needs to be researched or learnt first before writing.
- Checking in with them to see how they are travelling and encouraging them to seek teacher assistance with what they are having difficulties with.
BCE Listens Survey
The BCE Listens Survey 2022 aims to help school and system leaders better understand the views and experiences of key members of the BCE community, that is students, parents and staff. The online survey asks about different aspects of learning and working at BCE to identify strengths and areas for improvement and is used to inform future work and BCE’s improvement journey.
Who is surveyed?
All school and office staff, parents, and students from Years 4 to 12 who have been learning or working at BCE for at least 8 weeks are invited to participate.
When will the survey be held?
Monday 6 June - Thursday 23 June, 2022.
How are the surveys being administered?
Brisbane Catholic Education has engaged Australian Survey Research to independently and confidentially administer the surveys on its behalf.
Assistant Principal - Staff and Students' News
Merit Slip Statistics
This term the College introduced the Merit Slips as part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) strategies, to acknowledge the positive behaviours amongst our students. This has proven to be very successful with staff handing out more than 2000 Merit Slips in the past 6 weeks. Students who have received five or ten Merit Slips have been sent an acknowledgement of their achievement and we have a number of students with close to fifteen Merit Slips, about to receive their bronze PB4L badges. Namatjira House is currently in the lead for the House Merit Slip competition but closely followed by Mitchell and Oodgeroo House. The winning House will be celebrating their win during a House BBQ in the Chisholm Centre courtyard on Thursday 23rd of June. Congratulations to all students who have received a Merit Slip and a big thank you to all our staff for making the effort to acknowledge these amazing students in our community.
Parent Engagement Evening – Adolescent Mental Health and Well-being
On Tuesday of week 9 (14th June) the third Parent Engagement will look at Adolescent Mental Health and Well-being. This evening will begin at 5pm with a small afternoon tea before the presentation starts at 5.30pm.
Our Guidance Counsellors, Melissa Reardon and Jacinta Murray will talk about mental health in teenagers – depression & anxiety and provide attendees strategies to consider with your teenager. After Melissa and Jacinta’s presentation, there will be plenty of time to ask questions.
This is another fantastic opportunity to engage with the College and with other parents. If you are interested in attending, please complete the following registration form: https://bit.ly/3PHYHUx or by scanning the QR code.
The Week of Wellness
In week nine of this term, the Student Leaders with the help of Mrs Goldsworthy and Mr van Gils, are organising the Week of Wellness. The focus of the activities organised throughout the week, focus on wellbeing with a specific daily focus. On Monday, the focus is on the mind, mindfulness and learning. On Tuesday, the focus will be on the Vinnies Winter Appeal and our school environment. Students are asked to bring in a gold coin donation and are allowed to wear free dress or sports uniform when they do. Wednesday is our spirit day and will see initiatives such as gratitude notes and meditation, followed by an active Thursday and a people focusses Friday. The student leaders are doing an amazing job getting organised for this week and we are looking forward to a successful completion of this awareness-building week.

Middle Years Learning Leader's News
Congratulations to Year 7 and 9 students, who over the course of week 4 and 5 completed the series of NAPLAN tests examining their writing, reading, knowledge, understanding, and application of language conventions, and numeracy abilities. These weeks can be stressful and are challenging. The way the students prepared and organised themselves and participated in the testing was outstanding. It was the first time that students of these cohorts had participated in NAPLAN Online, and it was clear that the practice work they had done previously provided them with familiarity with the NAPLAN processes and platform, resulting in observable calm, despite the testing environment. The Year 7 and 9 cohorts demonstrated that they are capable and resilient, who are able to conduct and commit themselves in a manner that resembles the expectations of the senior years. Well done Year 7 and 9!
SEDA News
Greetings SEDA students, Parents and Guardians. I want to start by commending all our students with their continued commitment to the SEDA program. I recognise that, it has been tough for students expecting games and competitions, only to have them cancelled due to weather. Continued efforts and commitment to before and after school training has been exceptional. I’d also like to acknowledge the parents and carers who change and adjust plans for our student’s week in, week out.
Futsal Update:
What would have been a busy time for the SEDA football program has turned into numerous game cancellations due to the weather.
The ISSA Cup game vs JPC was one of the games that was postponed, Chisholm have been drawn in a competitive group that also consists of Kimberley College and Livingstone College. The Pacific Pines 9’s for both boys and girls was also postponed until Term 3. We did manage to get a round of SECA played with many positive results across all age groups. The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy for both boys and girls is the next big event towards the end of the month.
Students have been keeping their fitness levels up with our regular lunch time futsal tournaments.
Basketball Update:
The Gold Coast Invitational is the next big event set to take place on Wednesday 6 to 9 of July, the last weekend of the school holidays. This year the tournament has unfortunately downsized, in that, the previous three age group competition is now only two. We will be selecting a year seven to nine and year ten to twelve team to represent Chisholm at the end of this week.
Netball Update:
Finally, a competition that hasn’t been cancelled. Last Friday we sent away our top Junior and Senior netball teams to compete in the Vicki Wilson Cup Gala Day. Even though I sent a team full of Wing Defenses and Goal Defense bibs and they got rained on they had a fabulous day. The Open team came up against strong opposition and saw it as an opportunity to work on their structures and court craft in preparation for QISSN. This team came third. The Junior team, coached by Mr Dunfee, showed great sportsmanship and team play, convincingly winning half of their games. Great friendships were made, and fun was had on the day.
Rugby League Update:
With so many rain delays the Titans competition on a Monday and Wednesday, the organisers are looking to extend the competition in term 3. Our Confraternity team has been finalized and the team is chomping at the bit to get some games in prior to the competition and just as keen to rip in up in Mackay. Again, thank you to all the parents who have had to adjust their schedules for training and competition cancellations. Your patience and flexibility is greatly appreciated.

English eligibility for ATAR
QTAC, who calculate each student’s ATAR, has outlined eligibility requirements students must meet to be awarded an ATAR:
- Successful completion of an English subject is mandatory for the award of an ATAR. Students are required to successfully complete (i.e. be awarded a raw letter grade of “C” or higher) in one of the following QCAA English subject offerings: English, English as an Additional Language, Literature, English & Literature Extension or Essential English
- While successful completion of an English subject is a mandatory requirement for ATAR eligibility, there are no other mandatory subject inclusions for the ATAR
- Not all English subjects will meet the English prerequisite requirements for universities and courses – it is essential to check each university’s prerequisites.
- While students must satisfactorily complete an English subject to be eligible for an ATAR, the result in English will only be included in the ATAR calculation if it is one of the student’s best five subject results.
- Only General English subjects or Applied English subjects can be included in a student’s ATAR, but not both (e.g., English and Essential English)
An added note regarding mathematics subjects:
- Only General Mathematics subjects or Applied Mathematics subjects can be included in a student’s ATAR, but not both (e.g., Mathematical Methods and Essential Mathematics)
ATAR Report 2021
The ATAR Report 2021 provides an overview of the calculation of the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for the 2021 Queensland Year 12 student cohort. The report includes an overview of the 2021 Year 12 cohort, inter-subject scaling, and the ATAR. It is not intended to be a comprehensive report or interpretation of the full ATAR results. Further information on how Queensland’s ATARs are calculated may be found on the QTAC website.
