Principal's News
As we come to the final day of Term 2, we have much to celebrate and reflect upon. This last week has seen many positives involving both our staff and students, with the Year 12 Retreat earlier this week and the Athletics Carnival today. It is affirming to see so many students participating so enthusiastically and some sensational efforts.
As we conclude our 2022 Interhouse Athletics Carnival, I commend Mackillop House for their solid win. My thanks to Mathew Ellis especially, for his organisation and heart in promoting and facilitating the Carnivals. Kudos also to the student leaders and House Captains and Vice Captains for their leadership.
Accolades and Appreciation
It certainly has been an uncertain and challenging term. My sincere thanks is extended to parents for your patience, thoughtfulness and support of our standards – their efforts in learning, attendance, presentation and our partnership with the care of young people. We have struggled with aspects of staffing – stretched due to Covid, Influenza and changes of school, and we have appreciated your forbearance and support.
I am encouraged by the many messages received over the course of the term, with thanks or appreciation offered by parents, students and community, being witness to the efforts of our students and staff over the term. Last week, a group of enthusiastic Year 10 and 11 students volunteered to help at the St Matthew’s Under 8s Day. They modelled what we know and believe to be “A Chisholm Student”, which is the reality for many of our students. We have so many good things happening at the College and should never lose sight of these.
Thank you for seeing our students and staff for all the good they bring.
Year 12 and Holidays
For our Year 12 students, these holidays should still have study commitments firmly embedded in them. Finding the balance between relaxation and revision is vital as students prepare for their last full term at school.
Year 11 and Leadership in Term 3
Next term, we begin our student leadership process for 2023 with Year 11 students. This will encompass their participation and willingness to be involved in activities, attendance and general effort and attitude at school and at community events. These holidays are a good time for parents and caregivers to consolidate expectations around leadership aspirations.
QISSN and Confraternity Teams
My best wishes are extended to our QISSN and Confraternity Netball and Rugby League Teams as they travel to Mackay for their respective carnivals. I am looking forward to watching some great games of Netball and League over the next week. Keep watch on our Facebook page for updates and any live streams of games. We also have teams participating in the Gold Coast Invitational Basketball tournament, and expect some quality performances. Go Chisholm!
I hope you have a restful and enjoyable break after a very challenging yet positive term. Students have grown and developed their skills and knowledge over the term and I look forward to their return, and look forward to introducing new staff and students to you on Monday 11 July.
Happy Holidays

Chisholm Alumni - Sharni Crawford
My name is Sharni Crawford, I graduated Chisholm Catholic College in the cohort of 2017.
During my time at Chisholm I completed my high school certificate as well as a Cert III in Tourism through one of the programs held at the school.
I did my certificate through Dreamworld and have been working there ever since, they have given me the opportunity to work higher duties which I have taken upon. I have been working there 5.5 years now, they help me balance my work and University life. I currently study a Bachelor of Health Sciences at Griffith University on the Gold Coast where I’m currently completing my 2nd year and about to start my 3rd and final year.
Following my bachelors I wish to begin Medicine and become a paediatrician helping children and their needs. In my first year I also completed a Diploma in Health Sciences which was a great bridging course to get into my bachelors.

Year 12 Retreat
I am thankful for the privilege of working with our Year 12 students on retreat earlier this week, it was certainly a highlight for all. The campsite, Luther Heights was nestled amongst a beautiful backdrop of ocean and mangroves on Point Arkwright in picturesque Coolum. The aims of this retreat were:
- To create the opportunity for each young person’s story to be listened to in a trusting environment.
- To listen to and affirm the goodness of each student and challenge them to use their gifts to make a difference living up to our College mission to Live Christ’s Challenge.
- To strengthen the Year 12 cohort by offering continuing support and strength of a community of prayer as the students make their way in the world.
A key element of retreat were the small group sessions and thanks to the time and care invested by staff members working with each group, students were enabled to share and listen at a deep level. Staff members also shared their stories of trials and triumphs and what they were grateful for to the whole group.
During the retreat, students determined the qualities they want to see in themselves when they become a ‘Chisholm Graduate.’ Some of the qualities listed by the students included: kindness, resilience, faith, persistence, Chis Culture, empathy, integrity and strength. Students reflected deep within themselves to ascertain the inhibitors that may prevent these qualities from surfacing and presented these to the whole group.
Other activities included outdoor education run by the Luther Heights team, these included High Ropes, Flying Fox, Escape Room and more. We were also treated to a campfire where some of our students provided entertainment, followed by an examen reflection.
I would like to especially thank Mrs Ibell and Mrs Knox for their assistance in preparing and facilitating many of the staff-led sessions on retreat.
"I found Year 12 retreat an enjoyable and spiritual experience where I discovered the value of prayer and reflection. The range of activities were a great way to spend the last time together as a cohort and enabled me to personally reflect on my journey as a Chisholm student. Also, hearing the stories of other students I'd normally rarely talk to broadened my perspective on life and what others go through." Andrey Lyubaev, 2022
“The Year 12 retreat was a wonderful opportunity that provided us the with the ability to reflect on our time at Chisholm and where our lives will take us in the future. It helped me to connect with myself and think about things in ways I never would have. It also was a great opportunity to connect with the cohort specifically by writing and receiving affirmations. I am so grateful for all the teachers that made the few days happen for us.” Grace Eastermann, 2022
“I really enjoyed the activities as it gave us the opportunity to get to know our teachers and our peers around us. The retreat gave us the chance to reflect on ourselves. From the outdoor activities, I also enjoyed the Flying Fox it was fun and promoted team building.” Year 12 Student, 2022
St Vincent De Paul
I would like to thank our students for their contributions to St Vincent De Paul Casual Clothes Day as part of Wellness Week, in excess of over $870 was raised. This is a wonderful example of faith in action and these funds will assist the needy and homeless this Winter.
Year 11 Leadership Day
As part of our Leadership Program the Year 11 cohort will participate in a Leadership Day run by Character Builders on the 14th July. Some of the themes will cover relationships, resilience and respecting others. Students are able to wear their Sports Uniform on the day.
Assistant Principal - Curriculum's News
As Term 2 comes to an end it really feels like the year is flying by. Term 3 already appears to be jam packed with events and the end of the year will be here before we know it. Next term the Year 10 and Year 11 students will be heading out to the Ignite Careers Expo which forms an important part of Careers Education at Chisholm College, more information will follow early Term 3.
QTAC applications open in Term 3, we will be offering an information session here at the college on the 19th of July. It is important to have a strategy with applications as this can be all the difference in receiving an offer. I also encourage all students to apply to further study as it is easier to say no to a place than it is to try to find a place in January.
The QCAA has released the External Exam schedule. External assessments are General subject-based written exams that are:
- Common to all schools
- Summative – they count towards final subject results
- Developed and marked by the QCAA.
Most of the exams contribute 25% to the final result however Math and Science are 50% of final subject results. The exams test subject matter from Unit 3 and Unit 4. There are specific equipment lists for each paper that is allowed into the room. Extra resources and the schedule can be found at
External assessment timetable | Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (qcaa.qld.edu.au)
Year 9 and 10 students will change their electives next semester, if there are any changes you would like to request, this will be available in the first two weeks of Term 3.

Focus Behaviour of the Term
During term 2, in an effort to improve student behaviour at the College, we have implemented a focus behaviour of the term. In Term 2 and 3, students focus on all aspect of respect, including respect for self, others, school rule and respectful language.
Special Report on Respectful Language from SchoolTV:
In today’s world, it is becoming apparent that some young people are being influenced by the language around them. It is becoming more common for them to hear derogatory terms or offensive language on the streets, on social media channels, streaming services and in some forms of modern music. Proliferating the use of such language can sometimes normalise, glamorise and sanitise their impact, taking their meaning out of context. Words can be misconstrued to be hurtful, racist, homophobic, mysogynistic or even discriminatory. Using disrespectful language is considered socially unacceptable, and if not addressed early, can become a serious problem.
The use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is actually a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity. Therefore, many schools enforce a zero tolerance policy when it comes to such language. Parents and carers also need to play an important role in enforcing this approach by proactively monitoring what their children are viewing or being exposed to and discussing the use of words or their origin. This can help prevent inappropriate or disrespectful language being used in the classroom, school yard or other situations.
Whilst some students may use swearing or derogatory terms for attention seeking purposes, others may use it simply because they are still learning how to moderate their language. As young people develop their language skills, it is important for them to have a clear understanding of the impact of their choice of words on others and how their words can impact other people’s perspective of them - an important and essential skill to learn as they progress in their personal and professional development.

Happy and Safe Holidays
As we come to the end of another term at Chisholm Catholic College, I would like to wish everybody a happy and safe holiday. I hope that you will find time to spend with family and friends and that we will all meet again, re-energised and ready to start the new semester.
Week of Wellness
Last week was Week of Wellness at the College.
Each day had a focus around wellbeing including Mind – Learning, Body – Be Active, Environment, People – FAMILY and Gratitude.
On Monday students enjoyed participating in a Kahoot during PC as well as a Spelling Bee competition in the library at break. On Tuesday we held a free dress day to raises funds for the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal and raise awareness for various charities chosen by the students. We also turned the printers off for the day, planted a tree from our 2022 seniors and Stewardship Committee and distributed fruit kindly donated by Mount Cotton IGA. We started Wednesday by writing Gratitude notes in PC and were led by our College Captain Jordan in some Yoga at lunch. On Thursday we engaged in a variety of sports including Dance, Futsal, Netball and Basketball. Lastly, on Friday we celebrated our Chisholm FAMILY by handing out parent packs in the morning to our community and enjoying a sausage sizzle and live music with funds going towards St. Vincent de Paul. The week provided students with a great opportunity to connect with their health and each other. Thank you to everybody who participated and to the Students Leaders and teachers who organized the week.

QISSN and Confraternity Update:
Last Thursday, we had our annual jersey presentation and BBQ for our QISSN and Confraternity teams. What a fantastic evening it was. I’m already very proud and excited for our students going away. Thank you to the parents who came to support and congratulate our teams, your presence made the afternoon, I’d like to express thanks and gratitude towards our dedicated coaches and staff for their commitment to our students, training week in week out, organising the week away and spending time away from your families these holidays. Thank you, Mrs Danielle Edwards, Charlotte Goldsworthy, Mr Andrew Poynter, Mr Dean Stevens, Mr Conor Glennon and Mr Damian Bottaccio. Thank you! All the very best next week!
Football Update:
The U14 SEDA Boys Football squad had a flying start to their ISSA Cup campaign with two victories, 7-0 against John Paul College and 8-0 against Kimberley College. They have displayed great talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout these two afternoon events. Thanks to the parents who have come down to support our team.
Last week both the U15 Boys and girls football squads competed in the prestigious Bill Turner Cup at Iona College. The girls started off with an excellent victory over Redeemer but were over-run by the All Hallows’ girls in the second. The boys competition saw two teams forfeit their spot leaving only IONA to defeat. It would be two games where the team with the most goals moved on to the next round. After an hour of play and the first match completed, the scores were level at 2 apiece. Unfortunately, with 5 minutes remaining in the second game, Iona scored and after almost 2 hours of football we went down 3-2. Congratulations to both our teams and the teams moving forward in the competition.
Basketball Update:
The Gold Coast Invitational is the next big event set to take place on Wednesday 6th to 9th of July, the last weekend of the school holidays. A big congratulations to the two teams selected to represent Chisholm. A massive thanks must go to Mr. Cameron Conlon for taking the teams away during this time. Next term will see the basketball season really take off. Well done to all the super committed basketball students, with almost 100% of our students attending every training session this term.
Netball Update:
With our year sevens going into their SEDA semester, training on Wednesdays will no longer take place. The year 8s and 9s will be taking their place. Training for our year 8s and 9s will commence in week two of next term. It will likely be on Wednesday afternoons; this is yet to be confirmed.
Rugby League Update:
Last week our seniors wrapped up their Titan’s Cup campaign having an excellent win over a tough Beaudesert side. In other news, we have thankfully had confirmation that the year 7-8 rugby league Titan’s Cup has been postponed and is set to begin week 2 of next term. Our 7-8s training sessions have had exceptional numbers and it looks to be a strong team. A very exciting future for Chisholm Rugby League.

Senior Schooling Options - Grade 10 Subject Selection Information
Some people know what they want to do from an early age, but many do not. Additionally, it is common for people to change their mind. For example, approximately 50% of any year 12 cohort will report a change of career plan within 6-12 months of finishing school. For these reasons, it is important for you to know about many different pathways.
The VET sector in Australia provides nationally recognised training in industry specific skills. There are many industries and qualification levels to choose from in the VET sector. VET courses can be completed in shorter time frames than university degrees. On average, VET graduates are employed faster and can even earn more money than some university graduates. If you are thinking about TAFE as a pathway to university, a VET qualification can take time off a university degree, and in some cases make it cheaper!
Apprenticeships and traineeships are a blend of employment and vocational training where you undertake paid work while learning under the guidance of a training provider (eg TAFE) and your employer to complete a formal qualification. There are many industries and qualification levels to choose from in the VET sector. You can even start an apprenticeship or traineeship while you are at school! This is known as an SbAT (School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship).
YES (Young Entrepreneurs Summit)
Our college was incredibly grateful for the invitation to this one-day interactive summit which was specifically designed to help young people develop the skills and mindset they need to be entrepreneurs, innovators, creatives, engineers, scientists, and small business owners. The day had sessions which included key guest speakers who were young entrepreneurs sharing their experiences. The VET Business students had an amazing day – with Max Murphy-Mulcany getting some stage time to share his business pitch. Well done Max – and I am looking to your dream becoming a reality one day.
Use the school holidays wisely - Work experience may be an option.
The school holidays are a perfect time to do some work experience or volunteer work that may lead to some casual part time job. Work Experience gives you a chance to try out a career you have been considering before you tie yourself in. You will get opportunities to try skills, tour the workplace, and see what the job is really about. Rule out roles that will not suit your talents or lifestyle, and you will also be able to meet and speak with other people working in potential roles you could fill.
Without Work Experience, you will need to rely on the accounts of others or what you think the job will be like. There’s nothing like seeing it for yourself, so before you embark on further study or choose subjects make sure you know what the job could really be like.
Australian Government Digital Apprenticeship Program
The Australian Government Digital Apprenticeship Program is open to Year 12 students. If you like problem solving, digital technology, pulling apart or building PCs, setting up home networks, building apps, finding trends in data or simply problem solving and making things simple, then this may be a pathway for you. You’ll work full time and complete a Certificate IV or Diploma in a digital or technology-related field. Your studies will be fully paid for, and you'll have permanent employment when you finish your course. Some of the benefits of the program include:
- industry experience while you study
- vocational qualification in digital technology for government
- support from supervisors
- competitive salary and super
- permanent government employment
- Mentoring and support
- Learning opportunities
Applications close on 27 June:

My Skills
My Skills will help you to explore vocational education and training (VET) courses and providers that offer the courses and training you are looking for. You will find information on the Registered Training Organisations who offer government subsidised training and the average training fees for a course. Do your research so you choose the best option for you.
Do you have what employers are looking for?
JobJumpstart reports that the Australian Government surveyed more than 3000 Australian employers to find out what advice they would give to young people looking for a job. Employers said they look for:
- a positive attitude
- motivation and enthusiasm
- someone who is prepared to learn and take direction.
They also said that applicants need to:
- be punctual and dependable
- be respectful to colleagues and customers
- show a commitment to staying in the job for an acceptable period of time.
Employers also mentioned that some young people have unrealistic expectations of work, including:
- being unprepared for the demands of the workplace
- the level of pay they would receive
- wanting to start at the top instead of working their way up.
