Mr. Damian Bottaccio
End of Term
The end of Term 3 presents an opportunity for reflection and refocus.
It is important for all learners to consider how they wish to approach the final Term for the year. Certainly, for students in Years 7-10, it is never too late to make improvements in how they engage in their learning. Parents/Carers, I strongly recommend that there be some discussion over the coming fortnight as to how learning goals could be established or reconsidered based on student’s efforts. It is also a time to celebrate and acknowledge improvement. Together, we can go a long way towards developing a positive growth mindset for all of our learners – they are all very capable.
For our Year 11s, they are about to conclude Unit 2. It is affirming to hear that so many students are making positive progress, particular in the lead up to the Exam Block in Week 2 of next Term. They then begin Units 3 and 4, essentially their final year of Secondary learning.
For our Year 12s, the last few weeks prior to External Exams is a time to review their learning over the last year. It is a difficult time for some students as they also contend with the reality that their time at Chisholm Catholic College is fast drawing to a close. For nearly six years they have been guided and supported with their learning and soon make the transition to the world beyond school. For some, this reality is one that they are prepared for; their struggle is that they still have some unfinished business to complete at school. Regardless of where students are in their thinking, I wish them well for their remaining weeks.
2023 College Captains
At the last assembly I announced the College Captains for 2023 – Ashaya McHenry and Ava Mathews.
Both Ava and Ashaya will lead a Student Leadership team that will be named early next term. I have great faith that they will serve our community with distinction, building on the legacy established by previous College Captains.
New Appointments
I am proud to announce that Mr Brendan Luxton has been appointed Acting Deputy Principal at St Thomas More College, for Term 4. This is a testament to Mr Luxton’s commitment to learning and teaching, and leadership. We wish him well with this appointment and look forward to his return in 2023.
Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen will be assuming the position of Acting Assistant Principal – Curriculum for Term 4. I am confident that Mrs Van Der Westhuizen will provide solid leadership to our community across Term 4.
God bless,
Damian Bottaccio

COVID-19 Update
The Queensland Government has announced changes to COVID-19 requirements in Queensland from Friday, 9th September 2022.
The isolation period for people who have COVID-19 will reduce from 7 days to 5 days, provided the diagnosed person has no symptoms and doesn’t work in aged care, disability care or home care.
All other isolation requirements will remain the same.
Once published, more information about the new isolation protocols will be available here.
Chisholm Catholic College continues to have a range of COVID-safe measures in place, including:
- Supporting good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing and use of hand sanitiser. Students are reminded regularly about such practices.
- Continuing enhanced cleaning, including in the sick bay.
- Requiring all staff and students to stay home when sick, to get tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms, and follow Queensland Health advice for positive cases and close contacts.
- All students who develop symptoms while at school have priority access to RATs.
Families are reminded that should you test positive, the requirement is now for a 5-day isolation period. Upon return to school, masks are mandatory for a further seven days (outside of the home). Masks are also mandatory for anyone who is a Close Contact.
While the Queensland Government and Queensland Health have not mandated mask wearing in schools, all members of our community are welcome and encouraged to wear masks on site where it is safe to do so. This is particularly important if you are in a space where it is difficult to retain social distance. For students who catch public transport, masks are still required; excluding dedicated school bus services.
Please advise the College via scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au if your child needs to isolate due to testing positive to COVID-19.
Further information is available via the Queensland Health website.

Year 8 Leadership
This week, our Year 8 students participated in their Formation Day, facilitated by Character Builders as part of their leadership journey. Students were encouraged to show character outside of the security of their regular friendship groups and many students found this to be quite challenging.
At Chisholm Catholic College our FAMILY Values guide us to flourish and be the best versions of ourselves we can be. There are many learnings we can take away from the day and I would encourage parents to further explore and unpack the day at home with their daughters and sons using our FAMILY Values and questions below as a guide.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2067/picture1.jpg)
Our FAITH guides us to a personal relationship with Christ, whom we meet in each other, do we treat others as Christ would? AMBITION, relates to reaching one’s full potential, were we ambitious in our actions? COMMITMENT enables us to reach goals, achieve success and experience wholeness. Were we committed to the process of leadership, building character, kindness and empathy? INTEGRITY is evident in a commitment to promote the good of all. Did we display integrity in our actions or only look out for our own needs? LOVE is to make God present in the world through justice and compassion. How does one act justly and with compassion? Finally, to act with MERCY one must be inclusive and embracing of all. Did we meet anyone with differences on the day? How might we embrace those who are different from us?
The most powerful way that anybody can lead is by example. Character Builders taught us that we need to not only Step Up, but Step Out to allow others the chance to shine. Officially, the Leadership process consisting of nominations, interviews and speeches for our Year 9 2023 cohort begins early next term. I would strongly encourage our current Year 8 students to be courageous and become involved in this very important process and to let their light shine for the benefit of the College community.

Mr. Brendan Luxton
I have just spent half of the week up at Year 9 camp, walking off the back of cliffs, riding a mountain bike and tramping through the bush. I certainly slept well on Wednesday night despite being informed by many that I slept well at camp! There were times when students did not feel comfortable with what they were asked to do. This is when the aim of the camp becomes apparent, teamwork and resilience. There are a number of Year 12’s who are struggling to get to the finish line, maybe more so now that formal has passed. I remind you and them that they are very close and a drop or gain in subjects could have a significant impact on their QCE and or their ATAR. I often mention to students about putting themselves in the best position for post schooling options, this includes QCE and results.
Next term I have been granted the opportunity to Deputise at St Thomas More College and am looking forward to the opportunity. I am looking forward to coming back to Chisholm in 2023.

Mr. Krijn van Gils
At the end of a busy term, as it is getting warmer, the community is looking forward to the holidays to recharge for the final term of the year. For our senior students, this is a time to reflect and to get ready for their external exams. This pressure to perform might come with feelings of being overwhelmed, stressed and tired. It is important for all students to develop the ability to manage their wellbeing and to acknowledge when their wellbeing is suffering. Before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, one in four students was suffering from mental health issues and the impact of the pandemic is starting to show in our students. The time spent away from social interaction, their classrooms and their teachers has made some students feel lonely and concerned about the future.
This edition of SchoolTV looks at student wellbeing and provides you and your son/daughter with a wellbeing checklist to use when your son or daughter displays concerning behaviour patterns.

Uniform Reminders
As we are leaving behind the cold winter months behind, and enter into the warmer months of the year, students are expected to wear the summer uniform from the start of Term 4. This is a reminder of the uniform requirements for boys and girls in Term 4. Please remember that:

- Students are permitted to change into sports uniform at various times depending on when their HPE lesson is:
- LB 1 & 2
- Students can change into sports uniform in PC (only if PC teacher allows this) before HPE lesson.
- Depending on HPE teacher, the student will either get changed into formal uniform at the end of the lesson or at Morning tea.
- LB 3 & 4
- Students MUST change into sports uniform at morning tea.
- Depending on HPE teacher, the student will either get changed into their formal uniform at the end of the lesson or at lunch.

- The College tracksuit must not be worn with the College Day uniform. On extremely cold days, we encourage students to layer up underneath their formal uniform or to wear the Formal jumper (all students), College blazer (Years 10-12 students), or soft-shelled jacket (Year 7-9 students).
- Year 12 students may wear the senior jersey/jacket on any day.
Thank you for your support when addressing the uniform standards of the College. We are looking forward to welcoming the students back at the start of term 4 after a well-deserved break.
Enjoy your holidays.

Wig 4 Kids Update
Hey, I’m Essey and I have just donated 22cm of my hair to Wigs 4 Kids while raising a total of $2,031.
I am so happy that I got the chance to donate my hair to a charity that will turn my hair into a wig for a child going through cancer and I’m even happier that the $2,031 that I raised is going to a sick child’s family.
Thank you so much for your help and support with this donation.
Cheers,
Essey

NAPLAN Results
We are very pleased to pass on that the results for NAPLAN 2023 are now available via the Parent Portal. Despite having completed NAPLAN Online previously, for students in Year 7 and 9, this was the first time they had had the opportunity to engage with the new testing platform. The NAPLAN Online platform provides students a tailored test resulting in more precise data. This data provides information on the individual student and functions, at a school level, as a valuable tool for gaining understanding of our students’ strengths, areas for growth, and evaluating programs to ensure that they meet student needs.
This year’s results indicate that writing continues to be a strength for both our Year 7 and 9 students, with areas for focus identified in numeracy and reading testing; this on trend with the BCE Means that are available.
When reviewing your child’s results it is important to remember that NAPLAN is one, point in time, assessment, and for some students the results may not be a true representation of their ability. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to reach out to discuss this with their teacher.
The process of preparing for and conducting NAPLAN testing is one that involves a great deal of work, coordination, and dedication. Both staff and students participated in a number of training and practice sessions in the lead up to the test. The manner in which the testing was conducted was exemplary and a huge thanks and congratulations is deserved for the efforts of all involved.
Year 9 Camp
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2066/goldsworthy_charlotte.jpg)
Ms Charlotte Goldsworthy
This week, our Year 9 students attended a Wilderness Camp at Glastonbury Creek Campsite. They engaged in a variety of activities including abseiling, survival skills, bush navigation, creek crossing, archery, and mountain biking. It was fantastic to see the effort and attitude that the students put into the camp and to see so many students getting out of their comfort zones. Thank you to the Total Adventure staff and to the Chisholm staff who gave up their time to make this camp possible: Mrs Shannon Scott, Ms Anthea Jones, Mr Matthew Cronk, Mr Brendan Luxton, Mrs Christine Campbell, Mrs Kristie Mackle, Ms Melissa Reardon, Ms Ashley Condon, Mr Mathew Ellis and Mr Jake Rowles. Lastly, thank you to the students for making the week such an enjoyable experience.
Ms Charlotte Goldsworthy (Year 9 Coordinator)
"The Year 9 camp was just north of Gympie and was next to the Mary River. There were no cabins to sleep in as it was an outdoor survival camp so we slept in tents. The camp was all about teaching us how to survive and testing our abilities. Abseiling was my favourite activity. Doing abseiling made me leave my comfort zone and was something completely different which I had never done before. It was so fun because it was all new to me and I had no clue what to expect. I enjoyed free time as it gave me a chance to have fun with my friends, playing rugby and kicking the ball around. The funniest thing that happened on camp was when my friend slipped into the creek; when we were walking back from abseiling, and my friends and I started running to get ahead of the pack – it was a lot of fun. It was an awesome experience and I learnt a lot about nature and survival. The camp also enabled me to learn many new things that I didn’t know about my friends and even myself. Camp was a very enjoyable time."
Eamon Gallagher (Year 9)
"For grade 9 camp we journeyed out to Gympie for an outdoors experience most of us had never experienced before. We slept in small tents in the freezing cold at night and during the day we completed numerous activities aiming to push us out of our comfort zones and give us a new perspective of who we are. Activities included mountain biking, river crossing, abseiling, archery and survival skills. My favourite activity was abseiling down the sheer cliff edge, 15 metres in the air. It was thrilling new experience. Abseiling pushed me out of my comfort zone, yet it was amazing to feel as though you accomplished something you never thought you could. I also enjoyed the bike riding. It was tiring, although accomplishment came from every push up the steep hills. In the free time I enjoyed cleaning; my friends and I spent time cleaning our dirty belongings, as we were grotty without real showers. I also enjoyed talking to my friends and catching up on our daily activities and experiences. A fun memory from camp was the bus getting bogged right at the start of the camp. We were tired and restless from sitting for so long on the 3 hour trip up on the bus. At that point, no one wanted to go and we were all dreading the week ahead. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, the bus got stuck in the mud. We were forced to get off and continue the trip with our bags in hand all the way to the campsite. Looking back, the experience was funny and such an ironic way to start off the camp. Overall, camp was an experience I won’t forget. It taught not only me but my classmates and friends to push ourselves. We all stood out of our comfort zones at least once which allowed us to see just how much we can truly face. I still wouldn’t go back though, three days was more than enough."
Ella O’Brien (Year 9)

DEADLY CHOICES
Over the last 6 weeks, our Indigenous students have participated in the Deadly Choices program. The program is the creation of Preston Campbell, former Gold Coast Titans player, and was facilitated by former student Claudia Ellis who works for the foundation. Students learned about healthy lifestyle choices as well as negative impacts of smoking.
Bailey Wharton, Year 7:
I learned cigarettes have over 7000 chemicals, and smoking can cause ‘popcorn lungs’ which effects breathing functions.
Jye Holmes, Year 7:
I learnt that trading tobacco was a way of currency that was used by early settlers, also how addictive smoking is for people and how dangerous passive smoking is.

Year 12 - Tips for completing the QTAC Teacher Statement
The Teacher Personal Statement is a written response provided as part of the QTAC or UAC application for a teaching degree. It’s a great opportunity for students to think deeply about why they want to become a teacher. All QTAC applicants who have applied for teaching have been sent a scaffold to help with constructing the statements, however many find this process daunting and Griffith University have created useful resources to support students with their statements. Visit Griffith University's Demystifying the Teacher Statement resources for additional assistance.
