Mr. Damian Bottaccio
Sustaining the Partnership
We are committed to sustaining a partnership between home and school. This is with the understanding that when we work together our students can and will only benefit.
When speaking with potential parents I highlight the challenges that we currently face. Regardless of workplace, there appears to be an increasing demand on what individuals want. Worse still, there appears to be an acceptance that it is okay to communicate aggressively or in a tone that is counterproductive. I then explain to parents that we aren’t a service industry, not that anyone who works in those industries deserve poor treatment either. We are a human industry. For your typical teacher, their work involves teaching upwards of six classes or around 150 students. That is 150 unique individuals who are developing their understanding and place in the world. Our teachers take on this challenge and do so with commitment and enthusiasm. There are times where mistakes may happen or where we won’t please or meet everyone’s expectations, it is simply not possible. I state this when considering the many processes and procedures that exist within a school.
I stand by the learning and teaching within our College. Our teachers and support staff seek to provide a quality education for all students. We seek to maintain high standards with students’ learning and this is no easy feat. Just as we would support a student who has made a mistake, they are humans; it is important to remember that we too are human. How parents (and students) work with us, particularly when things may be uncomfortable or frustrating, needs to be grounded in mutual respect. Further, social media or other online platforms used to communicate concerns are similarly counterproductive.
I advocate for parents to raise concerns, and recommend that you contact the teacher directly – not to accuse but to understand and find a way forward; to work together. If you are still unclear on the outcome, there are leaders within the College that you can progress a concern. This is where the Student, Parent and Guardian Complaints Management policy supports open dialogue and respectful relationships.
Parents and Community Association (PCA) – General and Annual General Meeting
We are committed to opportunities for parents/carers to be involved in their child’s schooling. One such avenue is the Parents and Community Association (PCA). Next Tuesday, 14th March, we will be holding the Annual General Meeting prior to a General Meeting. As communicated in the last Newsletter, a key point of discussion will be the continuation of the PCA. Associated with this would be discussion around the utilisation of P&F Funds. We purposely delayed the AGM this year so that all parents/carers, especially our Year 7 families, could have input on this decision.
I greatly respect the parents and members of our community who actively participate and attend the PCA. The purpose of the PCA is to provide voice to what we do as a College and appreciate their insight. To sustain its existence, we need people attending.

College Pastoral Board – Membership Expressions of Interest (EOI)
The College’s Pastoral Board acts to support the strategic direction and planning of the College. They are involved in key aspects of our work, such as Learning and Teaching, Finances, Master Planning and Growth. As a Pastoral Board, not a Governance Board, they seek to support the College’s Leadership Team and staff with their insight and open dialogue.
Membership on the Pastoral Board requires that individuals are committed to supporting the overall growth of Chisholm Catholic College. It is from this broad and holistic lens that purposeful dialogue is achieved.
If you would like to be considered for membership, please email scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au noting any relevant experience that may be of benefit to the functions of the Pastoral Board. EOI’s are to be submitted by Friday, 10th March.

Assessment
As we come to the last four weeks of Term 1, students will be preparing for assessment items, either assignments or exams. This is a good opportunity for families to discuss study schedules and a good time to start (or to continue) to look at when assessment is due and if there are times when assessment is clustered together. This will help you to plan ahead. Due dates are available for the students in Chisholm Plus+ and the Assessment Calendar is available on the Parent Portal to help with your planning. A balanced weekly schedule will support the students in completing their assessment on time and to the best of their ability.
Reporting Dates
Below are the reporting dates, including Student-Led Conferences for 2023. Please note that there will be a change for the second Student-Led Conference. This will now be in Term 3, after the Semester 1 reports have been published, instead of Term 4. Progress Reports will be sent out to Parents but Statement of Result Reports and Units 1, 2 and 3 for Year 11 and 12 will be uploaded to the Parent Portal.
School Fees
Please note that school fees for Term 1 were due Thursday 2nd March 23. If you have not already paid, or commenced a payment plan, we kindly ask that you arrange to pay the outstanding balance as soon as possible. Please contact the school finance office on 07 3209 0700 if you have any queries.

Ms. Kristie Mackle
As we journey into the season of Lent, we take stock of our own mortality, humbly reflecting on the life and passion of Jesus Christ. I thank all who participated so fully and actively in our Ash Wednesday liturgy last week, and recognize those who gave their time to prepare, deliver and support our pancake stall on Shrove Tuesday. All proceeds will go towards the Caritas Project Compassion.

ESCIP Survey
This year, Chisholm has engaged with the Catholic Schools Dialogue Project. This BCE endorsed initiative collects feedback via an online survey from the students, staff and our school community on the current nature of our catholic identity and mission. As such, we invite all families to participate in the survey to help guide and enrich our identity through open dialogue and reflection. The login instructions for parents/guardians are below. The full information guide for parents has been included as an attachment to this newsletter.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2375/picture1.jpg)
The survey closes on Friday, 28th April 2023. Students and staff will be given the opportunity to complete the survey in the upcoming weeks via Stretch and Religion lessons. We appreciate the time taken by families to complete the survey.
House Mass
This Thursday, the students of Parer and Mitchell houses will come together during our Thursday House Assembly lesson to celebrate Mass in honor of their house patrons. The celebration will be led by either Fr Richard or Fr Clesio from St Matthew’s Parish Loganholme. Students of both houses will be invited back for cake during morning tea.
Casual Clothes Friday, 10th March 2023 – Project Compassion
This Friday, we will come together as a community to raise funds and support the mission of Caritas Australia Project Compassion 2023. Caritas lead critical humanitarian projects around the world, and all funds raised during our Project Compassion this year will go directly to supporting these endeavors. Students are invited to make a gold coin donation in support of this mission and wear casual dress that is appropriate and non-offensive.
International Women’s Day, 8th March 2023
This Wednesday, we will recognize International Women’s Day. Students and parents are invited to pick up a hot chocolate for a gold coin donation from outside the Chisholm Centre on Wednesday morning before school. Some Ham and Cheese croissants will be available for sale for $4. All proceeds raised will go towards a local women’s refuge in support of women in need. Our student leaders will hand out pins and ribbons to our female students and offer inspiring words during lunch on Wednesday.
Year 12 Retreat, 20th – 22nd March 2023
Year 12 students are looking forward to our Year 12 spiritual retreat coming up in a few weeks. The theme of our 3 day, Coolum based retreat is ‘journey’ and students will engage in several activities that ask:
- Who am I?
- What is my story?
- Where will my story lead next?
We are in our final stages of preparation and ask all families to ensure all medical forms, permission slips and dietary details have been forwarded to the College. Any Year 12 student who has not selected a cabin or 2 outdoor activities are urged to contact Mr Frazer, Pastoral Leader for Parer and Year 12 Coordinator, asap.

Staff Professional Development
This year sees some significant changes across the nation in regard to the roll out of Version 9 Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum is the framework we use with students in Year 7 through to Year 10. Some of the major changes that have occurred include: a reduction in content to allow more depth in certain topics, a stronger focus on the mastery of skills, prioritising Australian history and perspectives, deepening knowledge around First Nations people and an increased focus on teaching respectful relationships. With these changes, staff at Chisholm have started preparing for ACARA v9 through our participation in a series of Professional Development Twilight sessions. A highlight of the Professional development was the voice of one of our staff members Elise Black who lead “First Nations Perspectives” an exploration of how First Nations perspectives can be discussed and valued in the classroom. Staff delved into some of the many differing perspectives and explored their own identities through artistic expression.

Year 11 RYDA Incursion
This coming Thursday, the 9th of March, the Year 11s will be on an Incursion with the RYDA Program. This is a driver safety program designed to give students the knowledge to be safe and reliable drivers on the roads, as they slowly earn their licenses. This takes place during class time, and will finish with the normal school day. Students are asked to bring a pen for the day, and to ensure that they arrive to school on time.

2023 NAPLAN Timeline and PAT-R and PAT-M Testing Times
Year 7 and Year 9 students have now had the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming NAPLAN assessment window, which is being held Week 8 to Week 10 of this term.
In preparing for the NAPLAN online, students have
- downloaded the correct Green 2023 NAP browser and loaded it to their computers.
- experienced a practice Omnibus test and prepared a response to a writing sample.
- checked their headphones.
NAPLAN TEST DATES (Test window: Week 8 Wednesday 15 March – Week 10 Monday 27 March)
Our Chisholm Catholic College upcoming testing schedule is outlined below:
- Wednesday 15th March, Writing for both Year 7 and Year 9
- Thursday 16th March, Reading for both Year 7 and Year 9
- Monday 20th March, Language Conventions for both Year 7 and Year 9
- Tuesday 21st March, Numeracy for both Year 7 and Year 9
Please note: Writing is compulsory for all year levels on Day 1 of testing. Spelling is first this year, followed by Grammar and Punctuation in the Language Conventions test.
NAPLAN Tools
All Queensland schools will use the online platform delivery of NAPLAN. This means that all students across Queensland sit their NAPLAN test online, using a computer, and students require their own headphones.
Please note, Bluetooth headphones cannot be used in NAPLAN.
Headphones are required for some questions that include sound in the spelling, writing and numeracy tests. The conventions of language tests contain spelling questions that include audio dictation. An audio file is attached to the writing prompt as well as to each numeracy question so that the literacy demands of the questions do not prevent students accessing the test. Students can access the audio support without teachers’ help.
Urgent message to parents:
During the practice sessions in preparing students, many students did not have correct headphones/earphones. *Please take time over this coming week to ensure your child has good working wired headphones/earphones. Bluetooth headphones/earphones are not allowed.
Students must bring to each NAPLAN session:
1. Fully charged laptop with the NAPLAN browser installed.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2378/picture4.png)
Please ask your son / daughter to show you the 2023 NAP browser – if it is not identified – please email our school IT Manager Mr Will Hsu at whsu@bne.catholic.edu.au with a cc to elord@bne.catholic.edu.au
2. Headphones that can plug into laptop to access the audio parts of the test (but are not Bluetooth headphones). Please organise this week to purchase plug in headphones if your son / daughter does not have a set.
3. Pencil/ Pen (to provide an opportunity to write down their thinking, working out and draft ideas during the NAPLAN exam)
NAP Resources
The NAP resources page www.nap.edu.au/resources also has many documents including:
- NAPLAN information brochure for parents/carers NAPLAN – information for parents and carers

First Nations Student's News
Our visit to Ngutana-Lui cultural centre on Tuesday 21st February was an amazing experience. We boys learned to play the digeridoo, got to try two different kinds of didgeridoo, and learned two different ways to play the digeridoo. We started off using cups with a little bit off water and a straw to practice getting ready to use the digeridoo; I got to see other students and elders playing the digeridoo. I was very amazed because at first the digeridoo was hard, but I quickly found it easy and got the hang of it almost instantly. We were also able to watch traditional dances.
We also got to learnt about culture, and about the past and present rules of the digeridoo, we learnt that you never stand the digeridoo up and always lay it down, we learnt that whenever crossing state or country you must wrap both ends off the digeridoo up to prevent bad spirits coming through country and spreading.
We joined with other schools and other First Nations students, it was intriguing and all up amazing. I am looking forward to next year.
At Ngutana-Lui, us girls had such a great time, learning five different dances throughout the day with other First Nations girls from other schools and performing the dances to everyone at the end of the day. It was a fun day spending time with the other First Nations students and learning new things about our culture. The dances included women's cultural practices such as gathering, fishing and animal dances.
We would like to thank Aunty Christine and Mr Damen for driving the Chisholm bus. We all had a great day.
Year 9 First Nations students.

SEDA News
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/918/brendan_taylor.jpg)
Mr Brendan Taylor
Greetings SEDA students, Parents and Guardians. It’s all starting to happen here at Chisholm Sport. We’ve had our first sporting tournaments, swimming carnival and prep for SECA sports next term. Training sessions have seen excellent numbers; watching the all the students get stuck in has been a privilege to witness. The Friday fitness sessions have proved a great addition to our program. Even without our committed netballers we still had over 40 participants. This week we ran a minute for minute whole-body station workout. The students worked so hard, what a great way to start a Friday.
We’ve had our training kits arrive and distributed to our students. If you haven’t come to collect your uniform yet, please come down to melaleuca during PC.
Culture:
Culture at Chisholm, we are really trying to push a grateful and thankful sportsmanship amongst our students this year. To begin, we have many students who go out of their way to thank their coaches after each training session or day out. Our coaches are planning, running sessions and sometimes taking you to tournaments outside the expected working hours and do it out of passion for students and sport. I challenge all our students to say “Thanks” before leaving each session or competition.
Football:
Thursday the 23rd, we opened our QFSL campaign and took away 3 teams to the Loganlea SHS caldron to take on their junior and senior boys, and their senior girls. Congratulations Jack Noon who opened our QFSL account with a fantastic first goal. All students who represented the College on the day were outstanding in all accounts. Their skills, communication, sportsmanship and support for each other was exceptional.

![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/sb_cms_media_folder/2394/picture6.jpg)
On Thursday the 2nd, the boys U12s, U16s and Opens and girls open teams represented the college in the SEQ Futsal competition. We played exceptionally well with the U12s making it to the finals day, TBA. Unfortunately, albeit terrific performances, we came up against very strong, Marsden and Corinda SHS who were able to knock us out. Again, congratulations to the teams who represented Chisholm on the day.

A reminder that the Friday morning fitness sessions is a great opportunity to build on overall strength and conditioning. We’d love to see more footballers attend.
Rugby League:
Next Wednesday, the 8th March, the 7/8s will open their Titans Cup campaign down at Carrara. They have been training hard with excellent numbers attending. A reminder that students will leave the College at 2:10pm and return to school at roughly 6:00pm. All 7/8s must come and collect their uniforms from the melaleuca staffroom prior to Wednesday. Teams will be selected and emailed on Friday.

Netball:
On Friday, all our junior netballers went out to the first of four gala days out at the Southside Super 7s. Needs to be finished and sent this afternoon. Our Chisholm Netball Academy girls absolutely smashed their first tournament for the year at Southside Super 7’s! We pulled away with two undefeated teams and some very close games! Safe to say that we cannot wait to see what else they have in store this year. A special shout-out to our year 11 and 12 students who crushed their roles as coaches!!

Basketball:
The basketballers are continuing to demonstrate great commitment to training. Such great numbers and their improvement in skills has been a privilege to witness. Most basketballers are also taking up the opportunity to attend the Friday fitness sessions. After three weeks, students have already spoken of the benefits.

Are you aware that as a student of Brisbane Catholic Education your children can download eBooks onto their devices using the Sora app and their student login and password? This means they always have access to reading material no matter the day or time. The best part being the book returns itself after two weeks, so no over dues. It is easy to do and I am happy to run through the process with any interested parents. Feel free to visit me in the library for a demonstration or alternatively email me on yrelja@bne.catholic.edu.au and I can email you the instructions.

Is there that perfect job out there?
“Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life” or ‘follow your passion’. Do these sound familiar? Identifying that 'perfect job' may not even be possible. When you are young and leaving school, you probably don't have a full understanding of what the world of work and the work place is all about. You are more focused on your training and/or study options. Having a job that you engage in, using your skills and attributes and beginning in an organisation with shared values is a must, but it may not be your ‘passion’ job - and that's OK. Joanna Leggatt has written an article providing her insights into what the role of a job is in someone's life while meeting the personal needs for achieving a well-balanced and happy life. She suggests that work should not be your life but be an important part of your life. Click here to read her full article for another way of looking at the role of work in our lives.
Open Colleges career quiz - Personality test
The Open Colleges Career Quiz is designed to give you an understanding of your personality and the career areas that you would be best suited to. The quiz gives you suggestions for what career areas you might like. The Open Colleges Careers Advice site provides information on salary expectations, employment outlooks, typical hours, etc. Always remember that career quizzes are only a guide and won't give you a concrete answer as to what you should do, but they will give you some new career options to research.
Start investigating your career options now
It is never too early to start looking around to see what career options and pathways are available to you. It is important to know:
•Career exploration can give you a sense of control about your future! Remember, you are only exploring jobs for your first step in life, not for the rest of your life. The future world of work will continue to present exciting opportunities over time, which will lead to future jobs and careers.
•Remember, there is not one ‘ideal’ job for you. There may be several jobs that will build on your skills, knowledge and experience and will give you the things you want from a job (e.g. enjoyment, challenge, good income, working in a team, prestige, management opportunities, work/life balance, variety, skill development, self-employment, respect, travel or a combination of all of these).
Where to start:
•Make a list of the jobs you have already considered. The list can include your dream job (i.e. a job you would love to have but are unsure what you need to do to get it)
•Talk with five people who know you well (include a parent/guardian and a teacher). Ask them what jobs they think you would like and why. Some of their suggestions will be worth investigating further, so add them to your job list but remember it's only their opinion
•Think about your favourite subjects at school. Use the Career Bullseyes to find jobs related to these subjects. Select the jobs you find interesting and add them to your job list.
•Do a careers questionnaire. There are many career questionnaires that can help you learn more about yourself and the jobs you might like.

Remember this is an ongoing process and this is the beginning of your journey. Your list can change as you move through school and gain more work and personal insights.

While they have found that there will be a wide range of jobs growth across industries, almost two-thirds of employment growth will be in four service industries and you can click here to read more:•
