    Principal's News

    Mr. Damian Bottaccio

    Welcome Back to Term 2!

Today we welcomed back all students and staff for what will be a busy Term 2.

With the start of a new term, there is the ability to begin afresh. At this morning’s assembly, I spoke about how the efforts of last term could be addressed and new goals established; to learn and to set a new course or maintain efforts where success has been achieved. I also spoke about how our relationships can also take on a new direction – we can achieve so much when we consider our impact on others and seek to be supportive of each other. In seeking to lift each other up, we invite others to do the same. If we all do this, then we would see tremendous improvements with all our relationships.

I want to see our FAMILY grow. I want to see our students, staff and parents/carers believing that this is a place where we all belong and are made welcome. This is a shared responsibility that we all have.

    Bully Proof Launch

It is a very clear expectation at Chisholm Catholic College that everyone in our community is treated respectfully. Expecting respect, at all times, must be the norm. If we take our motto seriously, to Live Christ’s Challenge, there can be no other option. Therefore, bullying has no place in our community. Tomorrow night – Tuesday, 18th April – at 6:30pm, we will welcome former Australian boxing champion, Jeff Horn, to our College. Jeff will speak to parents about this issue and the work his group, Bullyproof Australia, will begin with our Year 7 students. All parents are welcome to attend.

This term, we will introduce the Bullyproof Australia program to all of our Year 7 students, who will begin a 10-lesson program developed by the organisation. This program is backed by the Australian Government. It will then be rolled out to other year levels.

Prospective parents often ask me if there is any bullying at our College. My response will always be – “There is and we don’t stand for it”. Unfortunately, bullying exists in all schools and, for adults, in many workplaces. The biggest problem we have in dealing with incidents of bullying is parents and young people buying into the belief that, ‘if I say something, things will get worse’. This only serves to reinforce bullying. As this term progresses, we will be highlighting our responses to bullying and seeking to build a culture where ‘bystanders’ are encouraged to act in support of those who are being bullied.

    Mobile Phone Policy

In recent weeks there have been increasing media reports on Mobile Phone ‘Bans’ being brought into schools around the country. This has extended into Queensland and the Queensland Government challenged to follow suit. The latest communication is that there will be discussion at a Federal level with all State Education Ministers – seeking to bring a level of uniformity in understanding and purpose.

Chisholm Catholic College, along with many other schools in Queensland, has a Mobile Phone Policy. The purpose has been widely communicated and is the very reason why the rest of the country either are or may soon follow with the implementation of similar policies.

We certainly understand the varied perspectives towards young people having mobile phones and their presence within schools. The reasons we have articulated are founded on providing a safe environment for all members of our community, seeking to emphasise positive relationships, and maintaining learning environments devoid of potential distraction.

We will be reviewing the Mobile Phone Policy this term, as we are seeking to keep up with the availability and access to this technology. This would also include smart watches. As always, we need the support of parents/guardians with what has been outlined – this is what was agreed to at the time of enrolment.

    ANZAC Day Service and March

Next Tuesday, as a Nation, we recognise and respectfully celebrate ANZAC Day. We will have our ANZAC Day Service on Monday.

All students have been invited to participate in the Springwood Tri-Services Sub-Branch ANZAC Day Service and Commemorative March. We will meet near the Logan East Community and Neighbourhood Centre, Cnr Cinderella Drive and Vanessa Blvd, at around 7:15 am. The March will commence at 7:45am. This leads to Springwood Park on Cinderella Drive where the ANZAC Day Service will be held. This typically ends at 9:00am. It is recommended that families park at Arndale Shopping Centre.

Over recent years we have had a great showing from our students, and would dearly love for this to continue. This is with the understanding that we will have students attending other services around the Logan area, as well as in the Brisbane March, representing family and/or the various cadet organisations or Scouts/Guides. Any involvement is respected and appreciated.

    Enrolment Update – Year 7: 2024 and 2025

Enrolment interviews for Year 7, 2024 are just about completed. However, due to approval for an increase in streams, there are still some spaces available. Applications should be submitted within the next few weeks.

Already, we have had very strong interest in enrolments for Year 7, 2025. Interviews have commenced and will continue through to the end of Term 4.

If you have a son/daughter in Year 5 – enrol them now. We do not wish to see any siblings miss out on a place.

If you have a family friend or work colleague who is looking at enrolling their child at Chisholm Catholic College for Year 7, 2024 or 2025, please ask them to make contact now.

    Assistant Principal Religious Education's News

    Ms. Kristie Mackle

Term 1 was a busy, productive, and exciting term, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their efforts. We’ve achieved a lot in Term 1, and the last two weeks were no exception.

    Year 12 Retreat

In Week 9, the Year 12 students and 13 teachers journeyed to Luther Heights in Coolum for the Year 12 Retreat.  This year’s theme, as designed and voted for by the student population was “Capture the Now”, and across the three days students reflected on the questions:

    • Who am I and what has shaped my journey?
    • What words of wisdom do I value? What am I grateful for?
    • Who do I want to become? How can we capture the now?

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the staff who gave their time to join us on our retreat, including Damian Bottaccio, Shannon Scott, Anthea Jones, Elsie Humphrey, Elise Black, Robyn Pollock, Cathy Nielsen, Melissa Reardon, Conor Glennon and Dean Stevens.  I’d like to especially acknowledge the work of Lachlan Frazer and Jo-Anne Ibell who spent countless hours preparing what was a wonderful few days spent together as the senior cohort of 2023. The students presented themselves well and made the most of their time.  Thank you students for a wonderful retreat!

    Catholic School’s Dialogue Survey

Thank you to those who have taken the opportunity to complete the Catholic School’s Dialogue Survey.  Your feedback on the Catholic Identity of our school is invaluable, and if you would like to offer your voice in the discussion, the survey is still open and access details are below.

    Easter Liturgy

On the last day of Term, the College drew the term to a close with an Easter liturgy.  Through this prayer we come together to reflect on the end of our Lent period, marked by Holy Week.  Reflecting on the life, death and joyful resurrection of Christ, we listen to the hope that is offered in the fulfillment of the covenant with God for our souls, and what this means to us in society today.  Thank you to the teachers and students who helped to lead this liturgy.

    Assistant Principal - Curriculum's News

    Mrs. Sarah Van Der Westhuizen

A critical part of being supportive of your child and their academic outcomes is helping to plan their time. The Curriculum letters for Term 2 have been published to the Parent Portal.

Preparing for an academic term can be a daunting task, especially for students who may feel overwhelmed by the number of subjects and assessment they have.  However, there are several steps that students can take to ensure that they are well-prepared for the academic term.

Firstly, students should start by organising their study space and materials. They should ensure that they have all the necessary textbooks, notebooks, and other supplies they need. They should also set up a comfortable and distraction-free study environment that will                                                            allow them to concentrate.

Another way students can be prepared is to develop a study schedule and stick to it. This will help them manage their time effectively and ensure that they are keeping up with any school work.

Finally, students should seek help when needed. They should not hesitate to reach out to their teacher if they are struggling with the work in class. If you need further advice on how to set up for academic success in a particular subject – Academic Leaders can offer advice for their specific learning area.

    SEDA News

    Mr Brendan Taylor

Greetings SEDA students, Parents and Guardians. Welcome to Term 2. Training sessions have continued to have excellent numbers. The Friday fitness sessions are still seeing 60+ students all of which are making new connections and building self-confidence - it is a great way to start a Friday and develop as an athlete.

This term we are introducing an Athlete of the Week and Month. This is for a student that displays great behaviour and effort in all classes, gives 100% at every training, stands out at tournaments, and exhibits all SEDA qualities:

Commitment, Comradery, Competitive, Sportsmanship, Enthusiasm, and Determination. This would include a small prize for the weekly and a Rebel Gift card for the Month as well as a certificate.

We are also trying our best to get regular updates on our Facebook page. Thanks to all community members for viewing and liking our photos. Our students appreciate the support shown by the community.

    Culture:

Culture at Chisholm, we are continuing to push a grateful and thankful sportsmanship amongst our students this year. We have many students who go out of their way to thank their coaches after each training session or day out. Today I was pleased to witness every student thanking the bus driver as they exited the bus. Its sometimes the simple things that make the biggest difference. Our coaches will continue to challenge all our students to use manners in all matters around the College.

    Football:

March was an extremely busy month for our footballers. On March 7th, round 2 of the QFSL was held at Balmoral State High School. The intermediate boys (9/10) took home a convincing 7 -1 win. Each other game was super competitive with only a goal or 2 being the difference. Of special note are the three Cookson boys representing Chisholm across the three boys’ teams.

On March 28, our Yr 7 SEDA football boys went to play in the annual QFSL Yr 7s Gala Day. They played some incredible football; communication from the back, the teamwork and high level of skill saw them come home as the CHAMPIONS! What an amazing opportunity for quality games the QFSL has provided our students already this year. Congratulations and well done to our Yr 7 footballers.

On March 29, we took away 6 teams to the knock-out stage of the Queensland region, Australian Futsal Tournament. Unfortunately, we were unable to progress through to the finals day, Champions of Champions, however all in all it was a great experience for all players

All students who represented the College on these days were outstanding in all accounts. Their skills, communication, sportsmanship and support for each other was exceptional. Keep up the great work!

A reminder that the Friday morning fitness sessions is a great opportunity to build on overall strength and conditioning. We’d love to see more footballers attend.

    Rugby League:

The 7/8 Rugby League team are well and truly underway in their Titans Cup competition. They have played excellently winning all games. We’ve played St Josephs, Beaudesert, Mabel Park and Coombabah thus far and have displayed great skill and sportsmanship. The boys are certainly in the hot seat at the moment, needing to win against Southport to secure a spot in the Grand Final against Palm Beach Currumbin SHS. We couldn’t be more proud!

At the end of last term we had the first of two half day intensives with Lee Addison. Lee has come onboard with Chisholm Rugby League to promote culture and mentor our coaches. The boys are still buzzing today after their first day. This is an undoubtedly a step in the right direction for Rugby League and its culture here at Chisholm. With the 7/8s dominating the two-hand touch games, the future of Rugby League at Chisholm is certainly an exciting prospect!

    Netball:

All Chisholm netballers continue to dominate the numbers and commitment at trainings. With SECA netball just around the corner we’re expecting to see great things happen in this space. Next term is our most busy. We have another Southside Super 7s carnival, hopefully a Mabel Twilight carnival and the Catholic Cup to add to the schedule. Again, watching some of the girls at Friday fitness sessions is nothing short of amazing. Your work and dedication are certainly being recognised around the College. Well done!

    Basketball:

The basketballers are continuing to demonstrate great commitment to training. Such great numbers and their improvement in skills has been a privilege to witness. Most basketballers are also taking up the opportunity to attend the Friday fitness sessions. After three weeks, students have already spoken of the benefits. Great start to term 1, we need to continue this into well into term 3 and 4, basketball season.

Gap years – Make them Meaningful with a Purpose

Taking a year off after Year 12 will not necessarily help you if you are unsure of your career path. Without a plan, a year out of formal education can see you spend your time ‘having a good time’ only. Alternatively, a formal gap year is known to offer many significant benefits. In a formal gap year, you would take on structured activities such as paid-work, volunteering and other forms of self-development related to possible future career options. This type of gap year enables you to try out a range of activities that can assist you in your career decision making. According to research, students who have a purposeful gap year are less likely to drop out of further study pathways. There are many organisations offering gap year opportunities so research well and plan carefully. Include your parents/guardians in your research.

The GAP Network – Placements in UK Boarding Schools

The Gap Network provides support to the growing demand for Gap Year placements in UK Boarding Schools. This program would see you being paid to live and work at some of the best boarding schools across the UK. The Gap Network provides you with an affordable way of travelling to the UK and exploring all that Europe has to offer. All you have to bring is a great attitude and willingness to work hard. The Gap Network is now open and accepting applications for gap placements commencing in January 2024. These places are very popular with High School Students, so apply early. If you turn 18 after 31 December 2023 (ie. if you were born in 2006) please contact The Gap Network (via email info@thegapnetwork.org) before completing an application so they can discuss your individual circumstances.
