Mr. Damian Bottaccio
Chisholm Day – A Huge Success!
On Friday, we came together to recognise our namesake’s birthday, celebrating Chisholm Day. And what a day it was!
The morning commenced with a moving liturgy, reflecting our patron’s story and articulating the values by which we seek to build a community of purpose and connection to our Catholic heritage and to each other. Fr Subin Thomas from St Patrick’s Catholic Parish, Beenleigh, presided over the liturgy that also included a respectful acknowledgment of National Sorry Day. Our students were excellent in how they participated, demonstrating great respect.
Students, staff and members of the community then moved to the oval to partake in the planned festivities. It was a pleasure to see the joy and excitement that this brought. Yes, the rides were amazing, and who could not love some baby farm animals, but it was the hive of activity around the House tents and the performance area that really set a standard for the day. The House activities were organised by our Student Leaders and formed part of pursuit of House Spirit throughout the day. Then you had performances from students and staff that kept audiences entertained throughout the day – we are truly blessed with amazingly talented and capable members of our family. A special ‘shout-out’ to our Captains, Ava and Ashaya, who, along with the other Student Leaders, also organised activities throughout the week making it ‘Spirit Week’.
I would also like to acknowledge the tremendous support of the Parents and Community Association (PCA), including Logan City Councillor (Div.10), Miriam Stemp. Their presence on the day, providing an array of food options was very much appreciated. Thank you!
The day included the traditional Staff vs Student Volleyball Game (staff won again!) and the running of the Chisholm Challenge, which ended the day, before finalising the House Spirit Cup. For the record, Oodgeroo were victors on the day, but it is important to note that the lead changed several times during the week. Congratulations to everyone involved!

National Reconciliation Week
This week we recognise National Reconciliation Week. This will include the unveiling of a First Nation’s Artwork commissioned by the College and co-created with our students. The artist, Tina Martin, who is part of our family, worked with the ideas offered by our students to represent the unique story for our community. The unveiling will happen tomorrow when we are joined by the Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, Dr Sally Towns. We look forward to sharing with our community.
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, Be a Voice for Generations, urges all Australians to use their power, their words and their actions to create a better, more just Australia for all of us.
Staff Twilight
Our teaching staff undertook a twilight professional development after school last Tuesday centred around Sacramentality – Seeing God in All Things. The session was facilitated by Michael Blanchfield, Education Officer - Catholic Identity, from Brisbane Catholic Education. We were privileged to have this opportunity and we were very proud of the engagement shown by our staff in developing their understanding of their important role as educators within Catholic education.
Year 12 – 100 Days Until Graduation
This Thursday, we will recognise this important milestone for our Year 12 students. Their journey through 13 years of formal schooling will be celebrated at the Graduation in November, so we do take the time to celebrate the occasion. We have seen this cohort achieve many positives during their time at the College and seek to ensure that they know we travel this journey with them.
Tell Them From Me – Parent Survey
Over the coming weeks we are inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our College using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite parents/carers to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our College community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Chisholm Catholic College.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

Mr. Reuben Chalmers
At the last whole school assembly Mr Bottaccio spoke to students about being committed Chisholm students, particularly to each other. Treating each other with dignity, respect and kindness. This is not just a good way to build a positive community but our God’s commandment to "Love thy neighbour", originating from the words of Jesus in the New Testament. It encourages us to show compassion, kindness, and love to those around us, our community members and even strangers. The concept of loving one's neighbor extends beyond geographical proximity and encompasses a spirit of empathy, respect, and care for all individuals.
It was wonderful to see our senior leaders engaging in this positive work last week as they ran the first Spirit Week for the College. A massive success, our leaders created and ran a variety of activities during lunchtimes that were well received by the community. This spirit continued into Chisholm Day and I thank the students for the way they participated and engaged with the many activities on the day.
This week we celebrate Reconciliation Week. Again, I highlight the commandment "Love thy neighbor" and its connection to Reconciliation Week, the shared principles of respect, empathy, and fostering positive relationships. The concept of loving one's neighbor aligns with the values of reconciliation, as it encourages individuals to recognise and appreciate the unique cultures, histories, and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It promotes the understanding that all individuals, regardless of their background, deserve compassion, justice, and equal treatment.

Ms. Kristie Mackle
This past Sunday was Pentecost Sunday, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and followers of Jesus. We are reminded that John’s Gospel teaches:
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit”.
In his prayer intention for the month of May, Pope Francis asks us to pray for the evangelical mission of the Church, that we may go forth in peace and spread the good news, just as Jesus’ commanded his disciples to do.
For our Chisholm family, this culminated in our Chisholm Day liturgy and Sorry Day assembly on Friday 26th May 2023. Coming together in Love, Hope and Spirit, we reflected on the mission of Caroline Chisholm and our House Patrons, offering our heads, hands and hearts to Live Christ’s Challenge. We also paused to reflect on National Sorry Day, offering our prayers, words and hope for a future of understanding, reconciliation and unity.
Thank you to those who joined us on the day, and thank you to all the students, teachers and support staff who came together in goodwill to celebrate the day.
On Thursday last week, Campus Minister Jo-Anne Ibell and I had the pleasure of sitting down with representatives from the St Vincent De Paul society to discuss ways that our school may continue its partnership with this invaluable community organisation. There are many opportunities for students to contribute to our local community through the organisation, such as signing up to be a St Vincent De Paul buddy or collecting non-perishables for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. All interested students are asked to watch the daily notices for more information.
This week is Reconciliation week, and we as a College community will come together during our Thursday morning assembly to Be a Voice for Future Generations. We will also commemorate the week with a First Nations Painting unveiling created by one of our First Nations’ parents. We look forward to commemorating this important week.
As the month of May draws to a close, we ask Mary to intercede for our souls:
Holy Mary, mother fair,
Filled with love for God,
Pray for us in all our needs.
Pray for us today.
Amen.
Wishing you a happy and prosperous fortnight ahead.
God bless.

Career Expo Reminder
A reminder that we are hosting our annual Career Expo this Wednesday, 31st of May. Students and carers from 9 to 12 are welcome to attend. In the afternoon, we will have trade, industry and university displays held in the Chisholm Centre. Our Academic Leaders, will be available for subject discussions in the school admin block and there will be information sessions in the library around QCE, QCAA and the Set-P process for Year 10 parents and students.
Window into Learning – Humanities Subjects
Our perception of school is heavily influenced by the experiences and learning that we undertook as students ourselves. The reality is that learning for this generation – the Alpha and Gen Z – will look very different. Our students will need to rely heavily on ‘soft’ skills, collaboration and the ability to transfer and apply skills to a variety of contexts. This means that authenticity in leaning tasks is crucial for students to make connections and to see the value in learning.
For example, our Year 8 students in Humanities have been working on a group innovators project. Students have been hard at work creating prototypes that use the ‘Triple P’ approach to business. This approach has a focus on sustainable business practices at the core of their learning. These models will be on display in the library this week for students and teachers to admire the ideas and entrepreneurial skills of our Year 8s.

In our Tourism class, guest speakers with industry experience are commonly invited to expose students to authentic real-life work experiences. In this way, students can ask questions and gain a real insight into the many facets of the Tourism Sector. Last week, Mr Cronk was a guest in the Tourism classes to discuss his experiences as an event caterer. Previous to becoming a teacher, Mr Cronk owned an event catering company and has much experience in the planning and marketing of these types of tourism events.

Illness and Misadventure – Year 11 & 12 Reminder
As the flu season is firmly upon us, there is a possibility that your child may miss assessment or exams. If your child is sick or absent on the day of an exam in Year 11 or 12, they will need to apply for an Access Arrangement for Reasonable Adjustment (AARA). This is a mandated process that is approved through the QCAA. Students will need to submit a student statement, a medical report in the case of an illness, or other supporting documentation including official notices, police reports or government reports.
In the case of an illness on the day of a scheduled exam your child will also need to provide a medical certificate which outlines the following information:
- the illness, condition or event (including details of a diagnosis, where applicable)
- date of diagnosis, onset or occurrence
- symptoms, treatment or course of action related to the condition or event
- explanation of the probable effect of the illness, condition or event on the student’s participation in the assessment
As this process is approved by QCAA in Year 12, there is no guarantee that the student will be able to sit a comparable exam. For more information around these requirements please use this link to the QCAA handbook. For more information around our school assessment policy, the assessment flowchart can be found on the parent portal.

Bullyproof
This term, Danielle Edwards (Flynn House Leader and Year 7 coordinator) and James O’Sullivan have worked hard on the implementation of the BullyProof program in Year 7. Teachers have enjoyed teaching the lessons designed to engage our students in the significance of addressing bullying behaviours, the impact of these behaviours on the bully, the victim and the bystanders and to build resilience in our students through the practical aspects of the program.
This term, all Year 8 and 9 STRETCH teachers will receive their BullyProof training, and the program will be implemented in those year levels from the start of Term 3. This means that approximately 50% of our students will have completed a ten-week program by the end of Term 3. The following paragraph has been written by one of our Year 7 students after her STRETCH lesson in Week 5:
This term we have been doing bullyproof which is a program where we learn how to handle dangerous situations in this case, bullying. One of the main things we have been working on is our defensive stance, this is where we have our knees bent, one foot back, hands up in front of our face, and squeeze our stomachs. We have also been working on controlling pushes, communicating with the bully and bystanders and looking at helping to calm down the situation. We have also been working on the 4A’s, Avoidance, Awareness, Assessment, and Application which has taught us how to get out of dangerous situations. We now know the threat level of each situation such as mild threat, moderate threat, and life-threatening. As well as ways to remove yourself from the situation. But we are not just working on the physical side we have also been working on how to feel happier using your thoughts, emotions, feelings, and body signals. By doing this we have been working on Respect, Courage, Integrity, and Resilience. But overall, we have been working on how to calm down dangerous situations and get out of it. Bullyproof is a lot of fun and it has taught us how to respect others, have courage, have integrity and have resilience.

Parent Engagement Evening
On Tuesday, 23rd May the College hosted a number of parents for a presentation themed ‘How to communicate with your teen?’. The College Counsellors, Melissa Reardon and Jacinta Murray presented this important topic and there was plenty of time to for questions and answers. The presentation covered topic such as:
- What is the best time to communicate with your teen?
- Where would conversations ideally take place?
- How can parents/carers ensure that they provide care and attention whilst their son or daughter is exploring ways to become more independent?
The presentation will be made available through the Parent Portal shortly.

SPIRIT WEEK
Congratulations to the House Captains and Committee Leaders who organised and ran several activities during Spirit Week leading up to Chisholm Day. It was great to see lots of students involved in these activities and having fun. A big shout out to our College Captains, Ava Mathews and Ashaya McHenry for driving this great initiative, which will only grow in years to come.
CHISHOLM CHARGERS
Friday also saw the launch of the Chisholm Chargers, the College’s new mascot. Chosen for its connection to our College patron, Caroline Chisholm, who herself rode a white horse named Captain, the horse represents our history and our past as a College and is an excellent choice to carry the College into the future. Thanks to Mr Ellis for his work and research in choosing this excellent mascot for our community. The College Captains, on the back of this, also launched the College’s Spirit Instagram page, aptly titled, ChisholmChargers and in the weeks to come will continue to post about upcoming events at the College featuring our students, and again, is a great initiative of our two school leaders.

Middle Years Assessment Preparation
Our Middle Years students enjoy many aspects of their learning, but assessment generally is not one of them. Several parents have reached out to seek advice on how to support their child at home to navigate the upcoming assessment period.
Middle Years students learn differently from our senior students, and hence a focus on Middle Years is important. Here are some insights to help you understand how our Middle Years Students Learn.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2602/middle_years_1.png)
Helping your child with the study and preparation for assessment:
To overcome distractions - mobile devices and internet access are the biggest distractions to study.
- Make the study area a mobile, TV, gaming, and internet-free zone (unless during that session they are doing research that requires internet access).
- Turn mobiles to 'aeroplane mode' or off so there are no disruptions.
- Consider downloading a social media lockout app or switching on aeroplane mode during study time to prevent interruptions.
- Also, make sure friends and other family members know not to disturb study time.
- Finish any homework for the day before starting study – remember they are separate.
- Focus on one topic at a time.
To overcome procrastination - students often try to avoid subjects they find difficult, irrelevant, or bore them. To help your child, first, find out why they are procrastinating. Some tips to deal with procrastination include
- Ensure they have a set study area with all equipment needed but no mobile devices.
- Break the task down into smaller chunks such as identifying the headings for a summary first through brainstorming, listing the headings then summarising information for one heading at a time.
- Make a to-do list of tasks they can check off as they finish.
- Monitor their progress and reward each step.
Helping your child to be organised by:
- Developing Routines – A routine of doing homework at a set time, ideally a little each day.
- Set study space - Have a set place (not a bedroom) where the kids can do their homework, with the equipment they'll need:
- Pens and pencils, highlighters, scissors, glue, scrap paper, ruler, printing paper, calculator, computer and internet access, a printer.
- Calendars, to-do lists, and a study timetable.
- Study Planner – weekly / term
- Prepare a study calendar. Use the Term 2 Assessment calendar provided by the school to unpack what is due and when.
- Then diarise the dates to prepare a plan over the next few weeks.
Term 2 Week | What is due? | What nights can I work on these? |
Week 7 | ||
Week 8 | ||
Week 9 | ||
Week 10 |
- Then work on a weekly study planner.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2591/my2.png)
Effective parent conversations and support
- Homework is about helping kids become independent learners.
- Encourage your child to start assignments as soon as they receive them – this will help to reduce night-before stress.
- Ask them what they are learning about?
- What is the homework about?
- What is the assignment?
- When are assignments due?
- Your child needs to do their own assignments. Teachers need to know what students can do independently.
- If your child is having difficulty with their homework, contact their class teacher for help.
Study Techniques
Assignments
- Starting early.
- Spend time understanding the task- a great opportunity to ask your child what it is that they will be doing.
- Plan how to approach the assignment- what needs to be researched or learnt first before writing.
- Checking in with them to see how they are progressing and encouraging them to seek teacher assistance with what they are having difficulties with.
Preparing for Exams
- Flash Cards - Memorisation.
- Glossary - Memorisation and developing clear and concise communication.
- Timelines - HASS, Religion, when studying historical events or findings, such as evolution.
- Mind Maps.
- Using Learning Intentions and Success Criteria should form part of their ongoing revision throughout the term.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2604/my3.png)
Learner Specific Techniques
- Kinaesthetic – Learning by doing, this could include re-enacting/role play, making a model, teaching someone
Visual –
Organising learning using mind maps, diagrams, colour coding, and images.
Watch a video on Jac Plus or YouTube
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2605/my4.png)
- Auditory – Focus on listening e.g.- recording their review of their learning using an audio recorder around the time of the learning, and re-listening to the audio as revision. Discussion.
- Read/write (not as common as you would think and not as effective for long-term recall) – The rewriting of notes in a more condensed and concise way, sometimes more than once.
- Write notes in a format to help understand the key ideas, one example:
Key Ideas | Text | Interpretation | Reference |
What question am I trying to answer | Summary of text | What literacy skills are needed, what cognitive verb? | Quote / author page |
Write in own words here |
In Summary, Study and Assignments:
- A flexible mindset – things can and will change in an instant.
- Begin assignments when you get them, or the stress levels will continue to rise.
- Treat drafting as though it is the good copy.
- If no homework, revision of 20 minutes per subject covered that day.
- Write out what you know and what questions you have.

Ms. Yasmin Relja
As the term progresses, students may find themselves starting to struggle with the expectations that modern day schooling places upon them. This pressure can be relieved through a visit to the Library. Each afternoon we are open until 4pm.
