Mr. Damian Bottaccio
The Last 2 Weeks
Understandably, the next 2 weeks will be busy and challenging as we finalise assessment in most learning areas. Keeping focused and balancing commitments, and our energy levels, is important to ensuring everyone finishes strongly.
It is important that we collectively support this focus up to and including the final day of term. Ending the term with the Athletics Carnival serves to celebrate our efforts, to be present to each other and to engage as a community should. I ask all in our College for your support of this.
Recognising Our Amazing Staff
I am very honoured to acknowledge the following nominations for the 2023 BCE Excellence Awards.
- Cass Irvine – The BCE Award for Excellence in a School Based Non-Teaching Role
- Charlotte Goldsworthy – The Archbishop’s Award for Leadership
- Abigail Vergunst – The ACU Award for Excellence as an Early Career Teacher (<5 years)
We are blessed with very capable staff and these staff are deserving of such recognition. We look forward to the final announcement to be made in August.
This Wednesday is School Officers' Day. It provides us with an opportunity to recognise the amazing team of support staff who are committed to providing resources and opportunities for our students with their learning and teachers with their role, providing an environment in which we can all flourish. I invite both parents and students to reach out and offer your gratitude.
College Athletics Carnival
The College Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday, 23rd June. There will be opportunities for all students to participate and contribute to their House, as well as enjoy the occasion.
Parents/carers, you are invited and welcome to attend.
PCA Meeting – Tuesday, 13th June
The next Parents and Community Association (PCA) meeting is scheduled for this evening, Tuesday, 13th June. It will be held in the Chisholm Centre, commencing at 6:00pm.
The PCA is open to all members of our community, particularly seeking to sustain our partnership with parents. The PCA provides an opportunity for voice and greater insight on our progress.
I would also like to recognise the notable support of our PCA on Chisholm Day and at the Careers Day and Expo. Their time and presence are highly valued and appreciated.
College Pastoral Board – Membership Expressions of Interest (EOI)
The College’s Pastoral Board acts to support the strategic direction and planning of the College. They are involved in key aspects of our work, such as Learning and Teaching, Finances, Master Planning and Growth. As a Pastoral Board, not a Governance Board, they seek to support the College’s Leadership Team and staff with their insight and open dialogue.
Membership on the Pastoral Board requires that individuals are committed to supporting the overall growth of Chisholm Catholic College. It is from this broad and holistic lens that purposeful dialogue is achieved.
If you would like to be considered for membership, please email scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au noting any relevant experience that may be of benefit to the functions of the Pastoral Board. EOI’s are to be submitted by Tuesday, 13th June.
Tell Them From Me – Parent Survey
We are inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our College using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite parents/carers to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our College community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Chisholm Catholic College.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. The survey closes on Friday, 16th June. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

Mr. Reuben Chalmers
Carpark Safety
Driving safely in the school carpark is of paramount importance. Everyone who uses the carpark, must safeguard the lives of the students and all members of our community. As we know, accidents can cause severe physical and emotional harm to students, teachers, and guests. It is the responsibility of all drivers to set a positive example for other motorists and most importantly our students: reinforcing a culture of safety and fostering a secure learning environment. I ask all drivers to adhere to the speed limit set and follow the directions of teachers on duty when using the school carpark.
Looking after our College
Recently, the focus behaviour of the week centred on care for the environment and school property. Respecting school property is crucial for maintaining a conducive and respectful learning environment. By treating school facilities, equipment, and resources with care, we demonstrate responsibility and appreciation for the opportunities provided to us. It helps preserve the longevity and functionality of school property, ensuring that future students can benefit from them as well. Respecting school property also promotes a sense of pride and belonging within the school community. When we value and take care of our surroundings, we contribute to a positive atmosphere that encourages learning, creativity, and personal growth. Remember, respecting school property is not only a duty but also a way to show gratitude for the education we receive.
Attendance
Attending school in the last weeks’ of term is crucial. It allows students to review and reinforce important concepts, ensuring a comprehensive understanding before moving on. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to complete any pending assignments or assessments, preventing last-minute stress. Being present in the final weeks showcases commitment and a strong work ethic, setting a positive habit for future endeavours. The last weeks of school holds value in consolidating knowledge, fostering connections, and concluding the term on a high note: This term the high note, is the Athletics Carnival. A fantastic day to show house spirit, participate in friendly competition and be impressed by the many talented athletes in our college.

PoTENtial
On Thursday, 8th June, a group of our Year 10 students attended the BCE PoTENtial workshop, hosted by the Catholic Identity team. This was a great day which included live music, guest speakers and workshops focused on inspiring and motivating the next group of seniors to aim high and reach their full potential. Our students were amazing ambassadors to our school and I would like to thank them and the Catholic Identity team for an amazing day. I’ve included their reflections about the experience.
"Potential was so fun. It helped me understand my goals and help me think about what I really want to do. I really enjoyed listening to Will (Gold medalist swimmer at the recent Para Olympics) - his story of not letting the stroke he experienced as a child define him. I also enjoyed the band"
"I liked the band and how interactive the whole event was."
"At the potential day today, we learnt to map our goals and be persistent. I really think it will help me in my future."
"Today was great because the experience made me and many others step out and lead. You do not have to wait to be a leader!"

Vinnie’s Winter Appeal
Thursday also saw the launch of our Vinnie’s Winter Appeal. Every year, the St Vincent De Paul society runs the Winter Appeal, with the aim of collecting greatly needed supplies to support those doing it tough. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 100, 000 people were sleeping rough in 2021, and this figure has continued to increase as the cost-of-living rises.
This year, the Vinnie’s Winter appeal is focusing on raising awareness about homelessness in Older Women, as this is the age group that is seeing the biggest increase in homelessness in Australia right now. Sleeping rough in the cold can have hazardous impacts on anyone’s health, particularly those who are the most vulnerable, such as the young and the elderly.
Over the next two weeks, the Mission Committee, along with the Flynn and Oodgeroo houses will lead the Chisholm Vinnie’s Winter appeal drive and we seek your donations. Each house will be asked to collect 4 different items that are needed by those sleeping rough in our local community. The responsibilities of each house are below:

In Week 10, Flynn, Oodgeroo and the Mission Committee will pack the donations into bags ready to give directly to those in our community. Our goal is to have 35 bags stocked and donated to the Logan Vinnie’s conference, and we thank families and the community for their support in chasing this goal. Items don’t always need to be new (i.e. scarves, beanies, gloves etc) can be second-hand, but must be in good condition.
Staff Twilight – Sacrementality.
On Tuesday, 22nd May, the Chisholm Staff gathered in B-Block to attend a 3 hour Catholic Identity workshop focused on spiritual formation and development. It was great to be joined by Michael from the BCE Catholic Identity team who shared his knowledge and wisdom on all things sacramentality and spiritual journey. We as a staff are committed to the further development of our Catholic mission and enjoyed the chance to sit down and reflect on our own personal beliefs and how these can translate to a quality Catholic education in the classroom.
Reconciliation Week – Painting launch
From the 22nd – 26th May, the College recognized National Reconciliation Week with the launch of our school First Nations Painting, Journey to Belonging painted by Tina Martin. This was an amazing moment for our College and First Nations Families, as we came together to share in the story behind the painting and celebrate the coming together of our students, staff and parents in the interest of continued dialogue, understanding and hope. We were lucky to also be joined by the Director of BCE, Dr Sally Towns to mark this momentous occasion. Thank you to Mr Brendan Taylor, Tina Martin, Aunty Christine and the First Nations families and students of Chisholm Catholic College for bringing this together. We were excited to share this beautiful painting with our school on National Sorry Day, and I would like to thank Year 10 student Jaiden Martin for his beautiful presentation of the painting.

We come together today as voices for generations,
ready to serve You as:

In the spirit of Makarrata,
let us come together with open hearts of Reconciliation.

This is particularly important for our Year 11 students.
SET-P Reminder
Students in Year 10 will be selecting their subjects for Senior School in Week 10 through the SET-P process. The booking window for parents will also open at this time.
Week 10 Exam Schedule Reminder (8-10)
Upcoming in Week 10 are the Year 8 to 10 scheduled cohort exams. If your child is unwell on the day of the exam, please contact the school and provide a medical certificate outlining the nature of the illness. Where possible, students will sit a make-up exam on the next day they are present at school. If this is not possible, teachers in 7 – 10 will use formative assessment, anecdotal records and any practice exams to report on student learning in Semester 1.

Understanding Vaping
In recent weeks, local and national media have communicated their investigations into vaping. Local news outlets have held a series of segments where they have reported on a variety of perspectives, including changes to legislation. Perhaps most beneficial to parents is the Spotlight report from a week ago. Whilst there is the presence of ‘sensationalism’ and ‘bias’, we are also offered insight on the potential harm associated with vapes/vaping. It is worth the watch – please see the link below.

Celebrating Middle Years Learning – Spotlight
This new segment aims to celebrate our students, teachers, and Academic Leaders' wonderful work. This week we start with Year 8 Business / Humanities.
Business / Humanities
In Year 8 Economics and Business Studies this term students learned about how markets influence the allocation of resources to the production of goods and services. They learned about how businesses adapt to market opportunities and respond to different work environments. Year 8 students’ Economics and Business Studies in Humanities, students have been busy this term developing an innovative product to improve the workplace environment. The students created some novel ideas to create a new product (such as ergonomic furniture, work accessories or worksite safety product) that will be of assistance in the contemporary work environment (such as an office, worksite, theme park, hospitality, delivery drivers, or travel office). Students considered the needs and demands of businesses and employees in the changing work environment.
The model, a visual and physical representation of the product, needed to be made from recycled materials such as cardboard and/or household plastics. Whilst the product may be larger, the model needed to be about the size of a shoebox.
Students entered their model and a report to explain their product into the Chisholm Innovation Competition which will include a display in the Chisholm Library.

![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/sb_cms_media_folder/2682/myrs2.jpg)
Our school community meandered through the library, read the place cards, viewed the models, and voted for the most innovative product for the contemporary workplace. There was a small prize for the winning team.

Greetings SEDA students, Parents and Guardians. I want to start by commending all our students with their continued commitment to the SEDA program. Continued efforts and commitment to before and after school training has been exceptional. I’d also like to acknowledge the parents and carers who change and adjust plans for our students week in, week out.
Football Update:
Bill Turner Cup/Trophy
One of the biggest school football competitions in the country. Both boys and girls teams won their zone gala day that was played at Loganlea SHS. This included teams from Loganlea, St Thomas Moore and Redeemer Lutheran College. On the day, our players competed and represented Chisholm with great Pride. Well done teams.

![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/sb_cms_media_folder/2688/bill_turner_2.jpg)
After progressing through to the next stage we came up against a very tough and skilled Corinda. Corinda was able to knock out Mabel Park, Marsden and Stretton in their Gala Day. To say the boys were excited to take the victory in penalties would be an understatement. A special mention to Allan Scott whose goal line defensive efforts were second to none. Thanks to the many parents of the community who came down to support.

QFSL
All age groups have played round games against Tamborine, Pimpama and Robina in recent weeks with a lot of victories and some great goals scored. A highlight has been the intermediate boys keeping their 100% record. This competition has been an excellent addition to the football program giving students quality competition.

ISSA Cup
The U14 boys will be playing Redlands College next week to complete their group games, hoping to continue on their good form after beating Kimberley College and look to clinch a spot in the knockout stages. All the best boys!
Students have been keeping their fitness levels up with our regular lunch time futsal tournaments. It is always great to see students bringing down new faces and involving the community, particularly the Year 7s.
Basketball Update:
We’ve recently competed in some friendly matches in preparation for the upcoming basketball season. Students continue to work hard on Wednesday morning trainings vying for positions in the upcoming tournaments. We have taken on Cleveland and Peregian Beach SH Schools, who have excellent teams. Even these Schools’ junior sides had students over the 6’6”. The boys saw this as an excellent opportunity to work on court structure and offensive movements.
The Gold Coast Invitational is the next big event set to take place on Wednesday, 6th to Sunday, 9th of July, the last weekend of the school holidays. This year the tournament has unfortunately downsized, in that, the previous three age group competition is now only two. We will be selecting a year seven to nine and year ten to twelve team to represent Chisholm at the end of this week.
Netball Update:
Southside Super 7s
Our last Southside Super 7s competition saw all of the SEDA netball students take the courts and compete in the Southside Super 7s Tournament. It was excellent to witness first hand a carnival of that nature. Shorter halves and more game played throughout the day, meant they were fast paced and accuracy when shooting became super critical. Most games only being won by 2 or 3. A very fun day out for our netballers.

Vicki Wilson Cup Gala Day
Last Tuesday we sent away our top Junior and Senior netball teams to compete in the Vicki Wilson Cup gala day. Both the Open and Junior teams came up against strong opposition and saw it as an opportunity to work on their structures and court craft in preparation for QISSN. The Junior team, coached by Miss Abigail Vergunst, showed great sportsmanship and team play, convincingly winning all of their games. Great friendships were made, and fun was had on the day.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2700/vw.jpg)
Mabel Park Twilight Tournament
We also took the juniors down to Logan City Netball Association to compete in the Mabel Park twilight tournament. All girls had a fantastic evening winning the majority of their games. The girls displayed excellent court craft, skill and sportsmanship.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2701/mabel_1.jpg)
Rugby League Update:
All teams have now finished their Titans Cup campaigns with our Junior boys leading the way. These boys won all but their semi-final games convincingly. It was Southport SHS, who knocked us out, that eventually took out that age group. Our Confraternity team has been finalized and the team is chomping at the bit to get some games in prior to the competition and just as keen to rip in up in down at the St Lawrence’s fields at Runcorn. Again, thank you to all the parents who have had to adjust their schedules for training and competition cancellations. Your patience and flexibility is greatly appreciated.

Looking for a job while at school or after school can be hard work especially when you are needing to record your 'experience' in your resume. It can even turn you off applying. Seek has put together a short article about how a good attitude can matter more than experience. They talk about:
- Most employers choose passion over experience.
- Your positive attitude can transform a workplace.
- Employers are looking for people who add to the culture.
- How to build a positive attitude
- How to demonstrate a great attitude to employers

Occupations V Industries
'Occupation’ is a word that refers to the type of work a person does, for example, a doctor, teacher or cabinet maker. 'Industry’ refers to the main goods and services that are produced by a person’s employer. Most occupations can be found in a number of industries. For example, while many cooks work in the Accommodation and Food Services industry, cooks are also employed in the Healthcare and Social Assistance industry in hospitals, childcare centers, Defence Force and aged care facilities. By understanding how flexible an occupation can be, you can broaden your options and increase your chances of finding the right career pathway. Year 11 University Tours
Last Monday our Year 11 students went on university tours at QUT’s Kelvin Grove and Garden’s Point campuses and the Nathan Campus at Griffith University. This provided an excellent opportunity for them to gain insight into what university life looks like and the flexibility of study options available. Below is Gee’s recount of the experience:
“Going to QUT and Griffith last week with my cohort immensely improved my idea of what I want to do in university. I got to hear from student ambassadors from each establishment about entry processes and ATAR/VET requirements, and the ambassadors also broke down individual aspects of university life, and it sounded a lot less daunting than it seemed initially. I found out that, in university, there are hundreds of individualised clubs based on personal interests to encourage making new friends and exploring new things and that students can travel overseas during their studies. Before learning that, I thought I wouldn't get to travel until I'd finished my degree. I also discovered you don't just have to pick electives specific to your degree, and choosing subjects from another course is an option. Since finding out about that, university courses seem to have many more options for me, and I plan to choose a major in Psychology and a minor in the Arts. I highly recommend to all other year levels to visit the universities with their cohorts. The ambassadors provide substantial, in-depth information you cannot find on the internet, and going on the university tour will assist immensely in deciding your future pathway.”

Careers Day and Expo
Thank you to all students, parents and carers who attended our annual Pathways and Careers Expo last Wednesday. We had a broad range of exhibitors and displays, and it was excellent to see families engaging with tertiary, trade, and industry experts, as well as our Academic Leaders and student helpers. We give special thanks to our exhibitors and staff for facilitating such an important event for our students to explore pathway options.
Also on Wednesday, our Year 10 students had their Careers Day. We extend our sincerest gratitude to all who supported the Year 10 Careers Day, particularly our guests who volunteered for mock interviews with our students. These experiences gave invaluable practice to our young adults to develop interview strategies, receive feedback and improve skills, ease nerves that many experience before an actual job interview, and build competence and literacy in self-promotion. Erin describes her experience:
“Yesterday, we had an incredible opportunity to attend a Careers expedition. We had the privilege of participating in mock interviews and meeting professionals from various fields, including the Navy, Air Force, and Police Force. A Chisholm alumnus also joined us to share his valuable experience in senior schooling and university life. The mock interviews provided us with insight into real-life interviews, along with helpful tips from those who have already experienced it firsthand. We gained valuable knowledge from professionals across different fields, who provided guidance on subject selection for our future schooling years, as well as additional pathways that can be taken. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to making it possible. Thank you so much!”

Year 12 UQ Career Pulse
UQ’s annual Career Pulse event was also held last Wednesday; we thank Mr Lalor for accompanying Year 12 students intending on applying to UQ. Christine and Maddison recount the day: “Last Wednesday 31st of May, a selective group of Year 12 students attended the UQ Career Pulse Experience at the St Lucia campus. Numerous real-world students ambassadors spoke about burning questions; life at university, what to expect, how to apply, and how to manage this new workload. Students were then given an opportunity to investigate and further explore their interests and possible career pathways, attending workshops led by professors and current lecturers at UQ. For many, these sessions solidified their desired interests, but for others, new windows and careers were opened. For example, human connection, technology, and sustainability related courses were offered, allowing students to investigate careers such as medicine, engineering, and agriculture. All in all, the experience was eye-opening and gave real-world context to possible careers and pathways post-school.”

Subject Spotlight - Year 10 Dance
Year 10 Dance Excursion: Mad Dance House
On the 9th of May, Year 10 dance had the opportunity to go to Mad Dance House and learn what Hip-Hop really is about. This term Year 10 dance is exploring all about Hip-Hop and collectively as a group we all learnt a routine by a Hip-Hop choreographer. Loic taught us the basic steps of how to nail the style of Hip-Hop. We all went out of our comfort zones and gave everything a go. There were awkward stages and there were times of laughter and fun. Some moves were a lot harder than others and multiple challenges were faced. It went from walking in with not much experience to walking out with smiles and joy. The process was enjoyable and in the end all of us individually learnt what Hip-Hop is all about and how to nail it! It was great fun and we would all do it again!

Working with Louise Rodrigues
Recently in the Year 10 dance class we have been working with a very talented hip hop choreographer, Louise Rodrigues. Louise is here for 6 lessons to teach us a Hip-Hop routine but also teach us where Hip-Hop originated from and the different styles. Year 10 dance spent a lesson with Louise learning where Hip-Hop originated from and the basic moves to nailing Hip-Hop. She broke down all the steps for us and helped us understand techniques. After completing all sessions with Louise, as a group we have collectively learnt some new styles of Hip-Hop and have created a fun routine to a mash-up of Hip-Hop songs. Hip-Hop is full of fun moves and has many variations that suits everyone! We'll perform this at Creative Arts Night - we hope you come along and enjoy our performance.

Subject Spotlight - Year 9 Dance
This term, Year 9 Dance class has been introduced to the genre of Contemporary Dance.
Throughout the course of the term, students have had the opportunity to work with professional dance artists Jade Brider and Nerida Matthaei. Jade put students through their paces in a technique class which introduced students to key characteristics and new ways of moving. Nerida worked students through the choreographic process of developing a dance work. Collaboratively, students performed and choreographed a dance work inspired by waterfalls and eucalyptus trees found at Mt Coot-tha.
Students are now working towards their choreography assessment task, which sees them take inspiration from a landscape. The classroom is full of oceans, storms and glaciers! Students are looking forward to showing off their newfound choreography skills. A selection of these will be performed at Creative Arts Night in Term 4 and we can't wait to share this with you.

Visual Arts
Students in Ms Picart’s Year 9 Visual Arts are developing their skills in painting on skateboard decks. They recently participated in a Spray-Painting workshop conducted by Ms Black.
“The spray-painting workshop was a great learning experience. We learned how to use and make stencils and different spray-painting techniques. At the end we made a painting of planets over mountains on a starry night.
We started off learning about safety equipment like mask, aprons, and gloves to make sure we don’t get any paint on us or breathe it in. Next, was learning how to use the spray cans. We learnt that you need to paint the background first before you paint the foreground as it’s easier. It was important to remember where our light source is as it will affect how we shade things. It is important not to hold the nozzle of the spray can close to the surface as it comes out as normal paint which can be useful sometimes. We started the artwork by painting the planets. We got a few cups and spray painted around them to make a circle. Then, we painted colours in the circles to make them look like planets. We also learnt how to give texture to the planets to make them look hilly and rocky. We rubbed some glad wrap on the paint to give it texture. Different things you rub against the paint make different textures. To make the stars, we sprayed our fingers and then flicked the paint onto the canvas. Then we learnt how to make stencils, we got a sheet of paper and cut some triangles into it for mountains. To finish off the artwork we made the mountains. We did this by using stencils to make them, then we shaded the mountains to finish off the artwork.
This was a very fun and interesting workshop that taught me a lot on how to spray-paint. I can’t wait to use these skills for my artworks!”
Conor McNelley - Year 9 Visual Art student.
“This term has not only been exciting but has given my classmates and I the chance to learn the countless aspects of spray painting. Rather than just being taught the simple steps of spray painting we were fortunate enough to learn the prepping of a skateboard, sketching our design, cutting stencils, and much more. It has been fun and enjoyable and I can’t wait to learn and experience more art techniques.”
Sienna Walsh - Year 9 Visual Art student.

Thursday Art Club
The art club ventured into a mindful exploration by creating abstract artworks inspired by everyday words they use without much thought. By rearranging these words in a new context, they discovered fresh meanings and perspectives. This transformative exercise pushed their creativity and sparked introspection, resulting in thought-provoking abstract artworks that invite viewers to reflect on the deeper meanings behind seemingly ordinary language.

Chisholm Day Umbrellas
In preparation for Chisholm Day, students enthusiastically embarked on a creative project to design and craft unique umbrellas representing various themes. Armed with their imagination and skills in craft and origami, they brought to life captivating designs that showcased the essence of themes such as autumn, spring, and the ocean. With meticulous folds and careful attention to detail, the students transformed ordinary umbrellas into stunning works of art. These artful creations not only added to the festive atmosphere of Chisholm Day but also served as delightful expressions of the student’s creativity and skill.

SECA Week 1 Season 1
SECA participants were challenged to use imagery from various calendar days to create captivating watercolour paintings. After completing their masterpieces, the students meticulously cut them into exquisite butterfly shapes. The upcoming step in the project involves installing these vibrant butterfly artworks within the chapel, forming an immersive calendar experience. The fluttering butterflies will offer a distinct and artistic perspective on the passage of time in the Chisholm Calendar Year, highlighting how our collective celebration of different days contributes to and embodies the Chisholm Catholic Identity.

SECA Week 2 Season 1
Students learned to combine drawing skills with mathematics and ratio to create realistic charcoal drawings. By applying mathematical principles such as proportions and ratios, they achieved accurate and lifelike representations. This integration of art and math sharpened their drawing abilities and fostered a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary connections. The resulting charcoal artworks showcased their talent for creating stunning, realistic compositions while appreciating the mathematical foundations of art.

SECA Week 3 Season 1
To finish off SECA round one, students embarked on a project to design and paint crosses for each PC room by drawing inspiration from various sources. Each cross represented not only the spiritual identity of each house and their Charism but also celebrated the diverse natural environment in our school. The students' efforts resulted in a vibrant collection of crosses that not only beautified the school rooms but also served as visual reminders of the shared values and aspirations of the entire school community.
