Scholars’ Assembly and Student-Led Conferences
Our Scholars’ Assembly was a wonderful opportunity to recognise our students’ efforts and achievements. It was made even more special by the presence of so many parents/carers and family – around 50% of students awarded were represented.
From my speech, I want to reiterate my thoughts on ‘Diligence’ –
Diligence means giving our best effort every day, not just when it's convenient or when someone is watching, but because we understand that excellence is a habit, not a one-time achievement.
Giving our best is not about competing with others; it's about competing with ourselves. It's about striving to be better today than we were yesterday. When we give our best, we may not always come out on top, but we will never regret the effort that has been made.
Giving our best reflects our character and integrity, and it builds a sense of pride and self-confidence that comes from knowing we did our utmost.
Again, to receive a ‘Diligence Award’ is within the capability of all of our students; only measured and determined against their individual efforts. I encourage all students to give their best – they are capable.
Last week, we had Student Led Conferences. It was such a pleasure to see so many parents attend and engage in meaningful conversation that supported their student/s. The atmosphere was very much a demonstration of the partnership we seek to sustain between home and school. From these conversations, it would be accurate to state that the outcome would have included the identification of clear goals for each student that supports their efforts.
Year 10 SET Plan Interviews
I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of our staff in supporting our Year 10s with the completion of their SET Plans. We had a team of teachers who supported Mrs Shannon Scott, Mrs Mala Nair and Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen in making time to meet with every student in Year 10 and their parents; approximately 160 interviews.
The manner with which we seek to support our students through the Pathways Program, led ably by Mrs Scott, is highly regarded. There has been months of preparation leading up to the SET Plan Interviews, such is the commitment to providing the best possible advice to our students before commencing their Senior Studies. I would also like to acknowledge the parents/carers who supported their student/s during this time – again, this is where our partnership becomes very visible.
Proposed Uniform Changes – Parent Feedback
Based on feedback from the community, we have been reviewing our Uniform offerings. Key considerations have been: simplifying uniform requirements, improving comfort and durability, and maintaining affordability. Some of the proposed changes were discussed at a PCA Meeting earlier in the year.
It is intended that the changes are phased in, commencing with Year 7, 2024. However, the items identified may be purchased as replacements by students in other year levels according to what has been proposed. Any further changes would be articulated later this term with the release of the 2024 Uniform and Grooming Guidelines.
We are still exploring changes to the Girl’s Formal Uniform. There is interest to include a dress, but we want to ensure that the final selection aligns with the skirt, blouse, shorts and pant options.
Click on the following link to offer your feedback. Staff and students will be sent a separate email. Parents of Year 7, 2024 will also be consulted. Should you have any questions, please email me at scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au

Scholars’ Assembly
On Friday the 28th July, we came together to celebrate our Scholars' assembly. We celebrated students’ approaches to learning through their diligence and attendance and those who have displayed excellence in their learning. Though not everyone can achieve an academic award, all students can receive diligence and attendance awards through their commitment to learning. Success in life is built around attitude and effort. Talent can only take you so far, the right attitude and effort is the defining factor for achieving success in life.
It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers at the College, to celebrate the successes of their children and join us for refreshments afterwards.

Children’s Educational Funding – St Vincent De Paul Society
The St Vincent de Paul Society of Queensland is again offering Children’s Educational Funding to those families experiencing financial hardship. The Children’s Education Fund is available to families experiencing financial hardship and helps with the cost of school fees, uniforms and books. The registration process takes place in August and families will be notified if successful in December.
Similarly, the School Student Broadband Initiative is focused on giving families with school aged children access to an internet connection, where there has previously not been one, for 12 months.
Any interested families are asked to register by calling the following number: 1800 846 643. We thank St Vincent De Paul, and our local Loganholme conference, for their continued support of our community.
Solemnity of Mary of the Cross MacKillop
On August 8th, we stop to celebrate St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, Australia’s first saint and the patron of our MacKillop house, from whom we draw the charisms of Integrity, Service and Community. St Mary MacKillop’s tireless work in education has left a lasting impact on education in Australia and has opened many doors for disadvantaged children and their families. Our MacKillop captains will represent the College at St Stephen’s Cathedral for the Archdiocese of Brisbane feast day Mass, attended by many schools from around Brisbane, and we as a College will come together in prayer next week to commemorate such a remarkable woman.

This month’s prayer intention from Pope Francis is for World Youth Day. This year’s theme is Mary Arose and Went With Haste (Luke 1: 39) and we pray that they may feel the love of Christ at work in their hearts and in every interaction with those who gather, both near and afar. May it be a time of thanksgiving, hope, laughter, joy and love. Amen.

Study Fit for Year 12
Year 12 students are on the countdown for their end of schooling exams. At this point in the school year, students may start to wind down and take their foot off the pedal and feel like their school careers are finished. Rest assured they are not. All students on an ATAR pathway will have external exams in Term 4 and Applied subjects still have at least one piece of assessment to go. In Year 12, all subjects are paired subjects meaning that to be successful across the year – ALL assessment matters.
External Exam Preparation
It is important that students take the time every day to revise effectively for their external exams. Different subjects will require different methods as the requirements may vary. For example, it is expected that in English students will be able to critically analyse the play ‘Macbeth’ and write an extended essay. For revision in English, it will be necessary for students to thoroughly understand the play, remember key quotes that link specifically to themes and write 800 to 1000 words critically around an unseen question. Strategies for this style of exam include practice of many different exam questions, breaking down the question and creating skeleton plans, memorisation of key quotes and mind-mapping of themes and characters. In comparison, in General Maths students will be examined on a years’ worth of content. As such, students should have a separate revision book for this subject with clearly defined headings and worked examples. Students should also practice with their calculator's settings to understand how to use under exam stress. It is also important that students are constantly revisiting and reviewing these books as part of the exam preparation.
The QCAA has published the external exam timetable for 2023. Students can access this here:
QCAA external assessment timetable 2023

Critical Thinking Moment
On the topic of exam performance and preparation, a skill that is important to develop in students is the ability to mind map. This skill draws on the key cognition of synthesis – which is the ability to effectively combine and summarise key ideas. A good mind map uses visual cues, words, images and colours to differentiate and distinguish between the ideas. Why is it beneficial for students? Research shows that this critical thinking skill encourages the brain to make associations and stimulates memory. It helps students plan and organise ideas, chunk information to help memory, encourages creativity and engages students more meaningfully in their learning.

Protecting Our Teens Online: The Risks of File Sharing
In today's digitally connected world, our teenagers are growing up with unprecedented access to information and the ability to share content with a click. While the internet offers valuable opportunities for learning and communication, it also poses significant risks, particularly when it comes to file sharing. As parents, it is crucial to understand the dangers associated with file sharing amongst teenagers and take proactive steps to protect our children's privacy, security, and overall well-being.
- Privacy Vulnerabilities: File sharing may inadvertently expose our teens to privacy breaches. Personal photos, videos, and documents shared online can easily end up in the wrong hands, leading to potential cyberbullying or misuse of their private information. Encourage open communication with your teens about the importance of being cautious with what they share and whom they share it with.
- Cybersecurity Threats: Malicious actors often exploit file-sharing platforms to distribute harmful content. Innocent-looking files could contain malware or ransomware, putting your teen's devices and personal information at risk. Advise your teens to use reputable and secure file-sharing platforms and install reliable antivirus software to safeguard against cyber threats.
- Legal Consequences: Many teenagers may not fully understand the implications of copyright infringement. Sharing copyrighted material without proper authorization, such as downloading movies, music, or software illegally, can lead to serious legal ramifications, including financial penalties and legal actions. Take the time to educate your teens about respecting intellectual property rights and the importance of acquiring content through legitimate means.
- Social and Emotional Impact: File sharing can have severe social and emotional repercussions for our teenagers. Shared content, even in private circles, can quickly become public, leading to embarrassment, humiliation, or the spread of rumours. Encourage your teens to think critically about the potential consequences of their actions and remind them that their online behaviour can have long-lasting effects on their reputation and relationships.
- Digital Footprint Awareness: It's essential to remind our teens that their digital footprint is permanent. Content shared online can be challenging to erase completely, and even deleted files may still be recoverable. Encourage your children to be thoughtful about their online presence and to be mindful of the potential impact on their future opportunities.
How to Support Your Teens in Navigating File Sharing:
Engage in Open Conversations: Initiate discussions about responsible internet usage and the risks associated with file sharing. Encourage your teens to share their online experiences and challenges openly.
Set Clear Boundaries: Establish guidelines for internet use at home, including rules about file sharing and downloading content. Ensure that your teens understand the reasons behind these boundaries.
Monitor Online Activities: While respecting their privacy, consider keeping an eye on your teen's online interactions and files they share. Parental monitoring software can be helpful in providing insights into their online behaviour.
Model Responsible Behaviour: Lead by example and demonstrate responsible online behaviour yourself. Show your teens how to use technology safely and ethically.
Educate Together: Stay informed about the latest trends and risks related to file sharing. Attend workshops or webinars together to enhance your knowledge and awareness.
As parents, we play a critical role in guiding our teenagers through the digital landscape. By equipping them with knowledge about responsible file sharing and online conduct, we can empower them to make informed decisions and navigate the digital world safely.
Let's work together to protect our teens and promote a positive online environment for their growth and development.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) – Merit Slips
Early in 2022, the College introduced the Chisholm Catholic College Merit Slip system. College staff members hand out Merit Slips to students who are courteous, conscientious, and connected within our classrooms, our community and/or our wider community. This system gives teachers the opportunity to recognise all the fantastic things that are happening in the College and encourage students to further develop as young people.
Within the Merit Slip system there are a number of levels students can progress through within their year levels. Students and parents of students who receive ten Merit Slips will receive a notification regarding their achievement. When students have received fifteen or more merit slips, they are recognised with a certificate and a bronze badge. When students receive thirty merits, they earn a silver badge and the pinnacle of fifty merits will earn them a gold Merit Award badge.
This week, we will recognise a number of students who have received enough merits to receive their first or second badge. These badges and certificates will be awarded to them during the College Assembly on Thursday. The College would like to congratulate the recipients of these special awards.

Sports News
SECA Season 2
We are thrilled to share the inspiring success stories of our young student athletes as they recently showcased their sportsmanship and talent in SECA Season 2. The event not only encouraged healthy competition but also fostered camaraderie and friendship among Chisholm students. It is very timely to celebrate the spirit of participation and the invaluable life lessons these aspiring athletes gained from this remarkable experience.
Building Confidence Through Sportsmanship
One of the most remarkable aspects of SECA Sport is how it empowers students to discover their inner strengths and build unwavering self-confidence. Whether it's scoring a goal, running a race, or making a key play, each achievement reinforces their belief in themselves and their abilities. Participating students learn that success is not just about winning but also about challenging themselves to do better each time. The sense of achievement and the confidence boost they gain on the field often translates to improved performance in academics and other areas of life.
Embracing Diversity and Unity
SECA Sports events are melting pots of diversity, bringing together students from different backgrounds, cultures, and communities. The sports field becomes a place where differences are set aside, and the focus shifts to teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect. This vibrant atmosphere fosters a sense of unity among participants, promoting understanding and appreciation for one another.
Physical and Mental Wellbeing
In today's fast-paced world, where digital devices often consume our attention, SECA Sport provides an invaluable opportunity for students to engage in physical activities and lead a healthier lifestyle. Regular participation in sports improves cardiovascular health, builds stronger bones and muscles, and helps combat stress and anxiety. These events reminds us of the significance of maintaining a balance between academics and physical activities, laying the foundation for healthier habits that can last a lifetime.
Creating Lifelong Friendships
SECA Sport opens the doors to new friendships that go beyond school boundaries. The interactions and camaraderie formed on the sports field often extend beyond the championship, leading to lifelong friendships and professional connections. These experiences help students develop essential social skills, teamwork, and cooperation, preparing them for success in their future endeavours.
Learning from Both Victory and Defeat
Participating in SECA Sport teaches students that winning isn't everything. It instils the importance of resilience and learning from both victory and defeat. Winning graciously and losing gracefully are essential aspects of sportsmanship. Students learn to accept challenges with grace and embrace opportunities to improve their skills continuously. These lessons have a profound impact on their character development and prepare them for the challenges in life that lie ahead.
Promoting a Sense of Belonging
SECA Sports events bring together not only the participating students but also their supporters, teachers, and communities. The overwhelming support from these individuals creates a warm and encouraging environment that promotes a strong sense of belonging. The collective cheer for their teams strengthens the students' determination to perform their best, fostering a deep sense of pride and belonging to something bigger than themselves.
As we celebrate the success of our student athletes in SECA Sport Season 2, let us also appreciate the dedication and efforts of the teachers, staff, and organizers who make these events possible. The impact of such sports events extends far beyond the boundaries of the playing field and leaves a lasting legacy in the lives of these remarkable young individuals.
Remember, it's not just about the wins and un-defeated seasons; it's about the experiences, friendships, and valuable life skills that will shape these students into the leaders of tomorrow. Let us continue to support and encourage student participation in Inter-School Sports, celebrating the joy of unity, friendship, and growth.
SECA Athletics Carnival
The SECA Athletics Carnival will be run on Wednesday, August 9th at QSAC. All selected team members have been contacted. We wish this team the best of luck as they compete against the other 14 SECA Colleges.

- Our Chisholm team of 48 students who contested the Pacific District Athletics Carnival in Week 4. All students represented the College with pride and really gave their all out on the track. Results are still being confirmed and we will give an in-depth rundown of the superb individual efforts once they come through from the convenor.
If our students have achieved exceptional things in the Sporting arena, please send them through so we can recognise and celebrate these achievements.

Book Week is fast approaching. This year the theme is READ, GROW, INSPIRE with the dates being the 19th of Augst to the 25th of August. This year’s featured artist is Matt Ottley. You can view his message here.
Anything that furthers a child’s ability to read and find a passion for it is an important cause, the primary aim of this being the sharing of children’s literature to inspire a love of reading throughout their lives. This year’s theme focuses on how literature has the power to develop a child’s inner world so they can express their own creativity.
Living in a digital age makes events like these even more important as Book Week gives us all an excuse to enjoy our favourite picture books, both past and present. These books are integral for children’s cognitive and emotional development and most importantly they are fun and entertaining. It gives us an excuse to celebrate and enjoy reading. When was the last time you enjoyed a picture book?
Logan City Libraries are also offering entertainment and free take-home craft packs. This year at Chisholm College there will be activities and competitions being held throughout the week for all year levels. Stay tuned…

Road Safety Event
The first interaction with an emergency service vehicle can be confusing and intimidating; especially for young drivers who are more likely to experience this when they are by themselves and don’t know what to do. Our program, which is aimed at Learner and Provisional licence holders, is designed to provide them with experience around these interactions with emergency service vehicles, making it a safer environment for everyone involved.
The next event is being held on Sunday 20 August 2023 at the Norwell Motorplex at 75 Norwell Road Norwell. There are five one-hour long sessions being run on the day; these sessions consist of a 15-minute road safety briefing and 45 minutes of on track driving in a safe and controlled environment. While the participants are driving around the track, several police vehicles will join them; the officers will drive around with lights and sirens on to simulate giving way to an emergency vehicle, they will also perform mobile intercepts and at the end, a static breath testing site.
There is a small booking fee of $25 and bookings can be made through the Norwell Motorplex website (norwellmotorplex.com.au). Participants (especially learners) must have a supervisor (over the age of 25) in the car with them while on track. The speeds are kept low so there is no requirement for helmets or protective gear.
If you have any questions please contact Norwell Motorplex on (07) 5546 1366.
