Mr Damian Bottaccio
Fathers’ Day Reflection
Yesterday was ‘Fathers’ Day’. I hope all of us who are dads have a goal of being a better dad to our children than our own fathers were to us. It is such a terrifyingly crucial role in our society. Lots of people, other than biological fathers, choose or are invited to step into that role for countless young people. Australian psychotherapist Steve Biddulph – author of the seminal 1997 book Raising Boys – has thought about these issues for almost 40 years, and he describes a sorrow for lost contact and love that boys and girls have for ‘absent fathers’.
“Role modelling is the way the human brain learns almost all complex behaviours, attitudes and skills, and so boys need to know good men close up. All of us are a bundle of the good people, male and female, we have known. But we have let that enrichment disappear on the male side, and many boys today have never seen what a good man looks like close up.”
“A father’s absence from his daughter’s life has been found in research to increase her chances of risky sexual behaviour, experiencing teen pregnancy, doing poorly in school. For sons, it prevents them from seeing the fullness of what it means to be a man. There is no access to the interior world of male feeling,” he says. “There’s been a vast improvement in this over the past 20 years because of how much time fathers are now devoting to their children. But generations of men have carried the legacy of this gaping hole.”
All dads and those who step into that role for our sons and daughters need support and encouragement to deal with the day to day challenges and opportunities of the role. This is where a sustained partnership with school and other organisations, such as sporting clubs, can be tremendously important. Parenting is not easy; being a father does not come with a manual. There is a fine balance between being overly-protective and being absent; this is where role-modelling can have an impact on our children. From yesterday’s The Sunday Mail, I offer this article:

Thank you to the fathers who were present at our Liturgy on Thursday. Your presence speaks volumes. I firmly believe that there would be many others who would have wanted to attend, but appreciate that work commitments don’t make it possible.
Student Engagement and Connection
As we come to the end of Term 3, I want to acknowledge the efforts of our staff and students who have sought to provide opportunities for our students to connect with each other, their teachers and the College. Unfortunately, we can place too much emphasis on pessimism and this only serves to detract from all the great and wonderful things we have in our school. There has been sporting, cultural, academic and social opportunities throughout the last 8 weeks and this continues into the final week with the Week of Wellness and recognition of RUOK Day. We want our students involved and connected to community; their FAMILY.
Thank you to our wonderful staff and student leaders who seek to bring life and opportunity.

A focus on Basics for Success – Connected Classrooms
It’s often by getting the basics right that lead to the greatest successes. It is only by making sure the foundations are done properly, can a team, organisation or business develop fulfill its potential. The same can be said about education and learning.
In pursuit of success, Chisholm is encouraging students to focus on fundamentals by prioritising preparedness and punctuality. Recognizing the quintessential role of these basics, they can fortify their learning journey. Equipped with pre-class readiness and punctual attendance, students can seize the advantage of a solid foundation. Back to basics, they can stride confidently towards success, demonstrating how simplicity can be the key to unlocking the grandest of accomplishments.
We ask parents and carers to help students be prepared each day by:
- Bringing all the right equipment to school
- Having their laptop charged overnight
- Arriving to school on time
- Wearing all aspects of the uniform properly
Students can take ownership of:
- Moving to classes in a timely manner
- Having the right attitude towards their learning
- Taking responsibility for learning and readiness
Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals. – Jim Rohn

Another term almost done and dusted! It been a busy and productive term, and a wonderful chance to celebrate the wonderful fathers, families, teachers and students in our school.
House Mass - Namatjira
Last week, Namatjira house came together to celebrate and give thanks for the many blessings they as a house, and individuals, have received. Opening the Mass with a vibrant rendition of Shine, Jesus Shine, the Mass was officiated by Fr Richard from St Matthew’s Parish Loganholme, and many students volunteered as part of the service. Thank you to Fr Richard and Namatjira for a wonderful Mass.
Fathers' Day Liturgy
On Thursday afternoon we welcomed a number of Fathers and Father-figures from our community into the school to celebrate Fathers' Day with a short liturgy and BBQ. It was wonderful to see so many join us for the afternoon, and we are grateful for the gift of time with some of our Chisholm Dads. Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen
Read. Inspire. Grow.
Last week's Book Week and the effort that many of our school community put into the spirit of the day was a good reminder for me of many students' joy and love for good literature. My own inspiration for costume was the children’s book, “How to Train your Dragon” by Cressida Cowell.
I often use the analogy of “How to train your Dragon” with students in my classes and in setting up the expectations of a good learning environment. I refer to myself as a fire-breathing dragon that is very easily tamed with the right learning environment and training conditions. I will challenge students, to think about what they might do collectively and individually ensure that they are training their teacher to be their best version of themselves.
Responses from students usually are around behaviours for learning. Just like if they were training a real dragon, in interactions with their teacher students would remain calm, be kind, speak in an appropriate voice and interact positively. Students would have all the equipment needed to be able to manage learning- pens, books and laptops – so that they are equipped to tame their teachers. When their teacher is performing (teaching) they listen attentively and reward the teacher by responding to their cues. In this way students are the owners of their learning. As educators and parents we all want success for our young people. Part of this success is releasing the responsibility of their learning back to the students – in this way they become more autonomous, intrinisically motivated and more aware of how positive learning behaviours has a positive impact on everyone.

Exam Season
Parents and students beware. Exam season is upon us. It is important during these times of the learning cycle that we are supporting our students to achieve their potential. Be kind to each other, take time to have a mental break by taking a walk or doing some physical activity and break your learning and revision into bite size chunks. Week of Wellness
In a world that moves at an unprecedented pace, where the demands of daily life can often feel overwhelming, the importance of well-being cannot be overstated. Recognizing the significance of nurturing both the body and mind, educational institutions have embraced a holistic approach to student development. Enter the "Week of Wellness," a transformative initiative that transcends traditional education by focusing on the overall health of high school students.
Adolescence is a crucial phase in a young person's life, where physical, mental, and emotional development plays a significant role. With this in mind, the Student Support Leader and other Year 12 volunteers have designed a week-long program that focuses on fostering a balanced and healthy lifestyle for our students.
During the Week of Wellness, each day recognises a different aspect of wellbeing. PC teachers will be provided with a daily wrap which explains the day’s focus, provides the teacher with activities, challenges, brain teasers and an overview of the activities organised during the day. The activities planned for the Week of Wellness aim to address the most important aspects of overall wellbeing. These include:
Physical Health:
The body and mind are inextricably linked. The Week of Wellness emphasizes the importance of physical health through workshops and sessions that highlight proper nutrition, regular exercise, and healthy sleep habits. Students are empowered to make informed choices about their well-being, instilling habits that can serve them well into adulthood. By promoting physical vitality, students are better prepared to face challenges with energy and enthusiasm.
Mental Resilience:
Adolescence can be a period of immense change, both internally and externally. Mental health takes centre stage during the Week of Wellness, with seminars addressing stress management, anxiety, and the significance of seeking support when needed. Equipping students with strategies to build mental resilience not only aids them in managing academic pressures but also fosters the emotional strength required to navigate life's complexities.
Emotional Intelligence:
Understanding and managing emotions is a cornerstone of personal growth. Workshops focused on emotional intelligence empower students to navigate their feelings, communicate effectively, and develop healthy outlets for expression. By nurturing emotional intelligence, students learn to cultivate empathy, handle conflicts constructively, and foster meaningful connections.
Social Connections:
Human beings are inherently social creatures, and healthy relationships play a pivotal role in well-being. The Week of Wellness facilitates opportunities for students to build peer support networks, engage in team-building activities, and forge connections that extend beyond the classroom. These interactions not only create a sense of belonging but also contribute to emotional well-being and self-confidence.
R U Ok Day
Fostering Connections and Compassion: Celebrating R U OK? Day in School
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2893/ruok23.png)
In a world that often appears busier and more interconnected than ever, the importance of genuine human connection can sometimes be overshadowed. But in the heart of schools, there is an opportunity to cultivate an atmosphere of compassion, empathy, and understanding. Enter "R U OK? Day," a poignant initiative that emphasizes the significance of checking in on one another's well-being. Celebrated in schools worldwide, R U OK? Day not only promotes mental health awareness but also underscores the power of a simple question to make a profound difference in someone's life.
The Essence of R U OK? Day:
R U OK? Day is more than just an event; it's a reminder that each of us holds the ability to positively impact someone's life by showing genuine care and concern. This day serves as a call to action to start meaningful conversations about mental health and emotional well-being. It's a reminder that a few thoughtful words can spark connections, strengthen relationships, and provide the support someone might desperately need.
During RU Ok day, we encourage students to wear the colour yellow and to celebrate this important day with us. Students who are not wearing yellow are expected to wear the sports uniform as per our Uniform Policy.
In celebrating R U OK? Day, schools reaffirm their commitment to the well-being of their students and the larger community. By fostering connections and compassion, this initiative showcases the transformative power of empathy, proving that a simple question can hold immeasurable significance in the lives of others. College Uniform Reminder - Summer Uniform
This week marks the last week of Term 3 and thus the last week during which students are required to wear the winter uniform. From Week 1 Term 4, students are required the wear the summer uniform.
Please continue to encourage your sons and daughters to wear the College uniform well and with pride. In Term 4, there will be renewed focus on student hairstyles, make-up, and jewellery. Please remember that extreme hairstyles such as mullets and excessive make-up are not allowed.
The Uniform Policy as introduced in Term 4, 2022 requires students to attend the uniform room where they will be provided with a spare uniform where needed or a uniform pass for the day. Persistent non-compliance will see students taken out of their regular classes until their unform is corrected. For more information, please read the attached Uniform Policy below.

First Nations' News
Brisbane Catholic Education Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Conference was held over 3 days at Victoria Park, Brisbane. It was a great start and a proud moment for our Chisholm students to perform and present at the conference.
Leilani of Year 10 was selected to join the BCE Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance troupe. This was at the opening of the conference. It was great to see all the work come together, dancing and representing her culture.
Our College was also represented over the 3 days by two of our Year 8 boys Jye and Bailey. The boys were presenting the song "Sorry" and the process that happened during the making of the song at St Matthews, Cornubia. The song has now been on YouTube and used in hundreds of schools and workplaces across QLD. https://youtu.be/U0Z46a51Lk4
So much knowledge was shared and an all round sense of commitment to education and ‘Closing the Gap’. Thanks to BCE and all of the staff who worked to make this such an outstanding conference for all.

Alongside this, a photography competition “The Beauty of Chisholm” will launch. This will entail students taking a picture of Chisholm and its beautiful grounds which will be posted on the Chisholm Charger’s account. The photo with the greatest number of likes will win that competition and receive a prize.

If you wish to be part of the solution to reducing litter at Chisholm, we encourage you to attend. Students in Year 8 and 9 Religion will also be participating in Dadirri, connecting to country around us.
Want to see less rubbish? Next week we will also be running a week long pledge at the Library, where students and staff can come and show their solidarity for our school environment by agreeing to put their rubbish in the bin or pledging to pick up 10 pieces of rubbish each day. Together, we CAN make this school a cleaner and healthier environment. We will also hold ice block rubbish bag exchange to show our care and encourage each other to commit to this worthy cause.
In the spirit of creation, plants and herbs will be planted, which will be used to make our own mint lemonade next term, which students will have the opportunity to try and realise what is possible when we dedicate ourselves to caring for the environment.

Over the past few weeks, the Chisholm Opens basketball team have competed in the Marsden Invitational Tournament and the Elite 8 Tournament. This team consists of 10 of the best players the school has to offer, even having students from Year 9 and 10, showing our bright future ahead! The first tournament at Marsden was a tough one, but they fought well. Coming up against a few Division 1 school teams, the boys kept games close and gave their all until the very end. This helped prepare them and build chemistry to be better as a team for the upcoming tournaments, specifically working towards CBSQ. During the Elite 8, the boys started off strong facing schools with similar ability, getting an early win on Friday. Being their first tournaments together, I have already seen an increase in team culture. With a few weeks to prepare for CBSQ, the Open Boys will be looking to secure a few wins in a tough pool.
