Mr Damian Bottaccio
Let’s Get On With Learning!
The focus over the next few weeks needs to be on academics and attention to classroom work ethics, behaviours and student outcomes. Allowing students time at home to attend to homework, revision and assessment is crucial. Balancing outside commitments with school priorities is the expectation this term. Term 4 really consolidates and builds momentum for students from the three preceding terms, and the best way to support this at home is to define boundaries and expectations that school tasks take priority.
Some of the ways that this can be supported is to:
- Read the emails that are sent by subject teachers.
- Read the assessment due dates that are available on the Parent Portal.
- Ask your student to show you around their OneNote for each subject.
These are excellent, real and tangible ways to connect with their learning, the subjects' expectations and to realistically set the term, month and week's home calendar and expectations.
House Farewell – Graduation
Last week marked the final week of formal classes for our Year 12s. On Friday morning they celebrated the House Farewell; a heart-warming and special occasion that included students in younger year levels speaking about their experiences and relationship with Year 12 Students from their PC.
We would advocate that our Pastoral Care structures enables relationships to be established with students across the College. This takes time and patience, as well as the willingness from students to give of themselves. We talk about our FAMILY values often, and this is very much about creating ‘family’ and belonging.
I wish the Year 12s every success in the coming weeks, undertaking their relevant External Exams and concluding their Senior School Studies. We look forward then to the Graduation on Friday, 17th November, where we will celebrate their time at the College.
World Teachers Day – Friday, 27th October
World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank our teachers for their important role in the community and for the positive impact they have on the lives of our students.
Consider taking the time to acknowledge and show your appreciation for the many ways teachers provide support and inspiration to our students. An email or card would mean so much.

Date Claimer – College Awards Evening
Along with the Opening Mass, the College Awards Evening is a notable event on our calendar, demonstrating all that we value.
Whilst we will ‘live stream’ the event, there is an open invitation extended to every member of our community to attend.
The College Awards Evening is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, 15th November. Please note on your calendars. We’d love to see you there.

Mr Reuben Chalmers
Last week parents and carers received the Term 3 Progress Reports and these are now available on the Parent Portal. This Friday, the ‘Approaches to Learning’ for the first 3 weeks of Term 4 will also be updated. I strongly encourage you to discuss both these reports with your child/ren. It is important for students to be achieving success in their grades, though I argue, a student’s approach to learning can outweigh what they achieve. We want students to develop a resilience in their approach to life. As education is their main endeavour, it is important that students are developing persistence, positive risk taking and seeking support behaviours that will grow their capacity to work hard and strive for success when the going gets tough. Setting process goals not performance goals helps do this.
Setting effective process goals for secondary students can promote academic success and personal development. Encourage your child to:
- Establish a daily routine for homework and study sessions, fostering consistency and discipline.
- Set goals around time management, such as breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, to help build organizational skills.
- Prioritise tasks and setting realistic deadlines to develop a sense of responsibility.
- Use effective note-taking strategies, like Cornell or mind mapping, to enhance comprehension and retention.
- Seek help when needed, fostering a proactive attitude towards problem-solving.
- Develop effective communication skills, both written and verbal, it is vital for academic and future professional success.
- Have a healthy balance between academic and extracurricular activities to ensure overall well-being.
These process goals empower secondary students to navigate their educational journey with resilience and skill.
This term we will be hosting the Annual Awards' Night. During this night, excellence in academic work will be acknowledged and celebrated. However, this is performance based, rewarding those students who have achieved the highest of academic success. Yet, there are many students that deserve celebrating and this is done with process goals shown through diligence and attendance awards: It is these Awards that every student can win.

Mrs Kristie Mackle
Term 4 is finally upon us, and it’s started with a bang!
Worship Wednesday
This term our Worship Wednesday initiative continues with Namatjira house. Each week, a different Namatjira PC will intentionally gather for morning prayer, joined by pastoral leader Mrs MacAllister, campus minister Mrs Ibell and APRE Mrs Mackle. The prayer is co-created by students of each PC, and N1 have already shared in prayer for Worship Wednesday, praying for kindness and compassion towards each other. We look forward to sharing in this experience with the rest of Namatjira house this term.

Kaleidoscope – Year 10 -12 Formation.
On Tuesday evening in Week 2, students from Year 11 attended the BCE event Kaleidoscope – an exploration of possibility, encounter, mission and the bold. Chisholm was honored to be involved, presenting the symbols in the opening liturgy and taking center stage in the session Kaleidoscope of Encounter. Jake, in Year 11, inspired all with his wise and witty stories, and we as a Chisholm community were so proud of him. It was a great night!

Year 9 Formation – Real Talk
Tuesday was also Formation Day for Year 9, hosted by Real Talk. The day was well received by the Year 9s and their level of engagement with the program was commendable. Chisholm Catholic College has a long standing relationship with Real Talk and we are always appreciative of the honest and open way they engage with our students.
Soctober for Catholic Mission
Last Wednesday, we held crazy sock day in honor of Catholic Mission’s Soctober, raising awareness and funds for the disadvantaged children of Timor Leste. It was a sea of crazy socks, sock balls and messages of love and hope across the campus. Thank you to all you supported the cause!

Season of Creation
Week 1 saw the close of the Season of Creation. This has been a wonderful opportunity for the College to reflect and raise awareness for the protection of our planet. The homemade lemonade was an absolute hit – selling out in under 10 minutes! Thank you to Mrs Knox and the Stewardship Committee.
The Season of Creation ends on the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi. St Francis is the patron of animals and the environment, and on his feast day we prayed his peace prayer in the hope that this term we are all inspired to be spread peace in our everyday lives.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
God Bless.

Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen
If you are in the Senior school, you are heading into an exam period. It may seem like most of the curriculum in senior revolves around the stress with exam preparations and readiness. However, exams are only 1 measure of performance and there are ways you can prepare for this. For 11s, this is your final formative assessment and you emerge in Week 4 learning Year 12 content. This can be a very daunting time, and students like to prepare well for any contingency. Exams are a crucial part of every students academic journey, but they can also be stressful and overwhelming. How can students make sure they are exam fit and perform well? Here are some tips and strategies that can help you prepare for your exams effectively.
1. Plan Ahead
One of the most important steps in exam preparation is to plan ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute to start studying, as this only increases anxiety and reduces how much is retained. Instead, create a study schedule that covers all the topics and skills that are needed to master for exams. Allocate enough time for each subject, and prioritise the ones that are more difficult or important. Make sure to include breaks, rewards, and revision sessions in the schedule. 15 and 5 rule could be a way that students reward themselves – 15 minutes active study 5 minutes brain break.
2. Use Effective Study Methods
Another key factor in exam preparation is to use effective study methods that suit your learning style and preferences. Some of the most common and proven study methods are:
- Active recall: This involves testing yourself on the material that you have learned, rather than just reading or reviewing it. Active recall helps you strengthen your memory and identify any gaps in your knowledge. You can use flashcards, quizzes, practice questions, or self-explanations to practice active recall.
- Spaced repetition: This involves reviewing the material that you have learned at regular intervals, rather than cramming it all at once. Spaced repetition helps you consolidate your long-term memory and avoid forgetting.
- Elaboration: This involves connecting the material that you have learned to other concepts, examples, or applications. Elaboration helps you deepen your understanding and enhance your critical thinking skills. You can use mind maps, diagrams, analogies, or summaries to practice elaboration.
3. Take Care of Yourself
Finally, don’t neglect your physical and mental well-being while preparing for your exams. Taking care of yourself can help you reduce stress, boost your mood, and improve your focus. Some of the ways that you can take care of yourself are:
- Sleep well: Getting enough sleep is essential for your memory, concentration, and performance. Aim for at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night, and avoid caffeine, alcohol, or screens before bedtime.
- Eat well: Eating a balanced diet can provide you with the energy and nutrients that you need for your brain function. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your meals, and avoid processed foods, sugar, or junk food.
- Exercise well: Exercising regularly can help you release endorphins, improve your blood circulation, and enhance your cognitive abilities. Choose an activity that you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or dancing, and do it for at least 30 minutes per day.
- Relax well: Relaxing can help you calm your nerves, lower your blood pressure, and increase your happiness. Find some time to do something that relaxes you, such as listening to music, reading a book, meditating, or doing yoga.
By following these tips and strategies, you can prepare for your exams effectively and confidently. For the 12s remember to embrace every opportunity that is thrown your way. Make sure you attempt each question – it matters. Good luck!

Students Engaging with Tik Tok Live
In our rapidly advancing digital age, social media platforms have become an integral part of our lives. Among the many platforms available, TikTok has gained immense popularity, especially among the younger generation. While TikTok can be a creative outlet and a source of entertainment, it is essential for us to understand the potential risks associated with certain features, such as TikTok Live. In this edition of our school newsletter, I want to shed light on the dangers of TikTok Live and provide guidance on how to navigate the online world safely as a number of Chisholm Catholic College students are actively involved in TikTok Live streaming.
What is TikTok Live?
TikTok Live is a feature that allows users to stream live video content to their followers in real-time. While this feature fosters a sense of connection and community, it also comes with its own set of risks and challenges.
Potential Dangers:
Inappropriate Content: Live streaming opens the door to inappropriate or explicit content, which can be harmful, especially for younger viewers. Users might encounter videos, comments, or behaviours that are not suitable for their age.
- Cyberbullying: The live nature of TikTok Live can lead to cyberbullying, where individuals may face harassment, mean comments, or even threats from others watching the stream.
- Exposure to Unhealthy Sexual Relationships: On TikTok Live, some users engage in discussions about sex that are not suitable for young audiences. They may glorify sex, discuss explicit details, and promote unhealthy sexual relationships.
- Privacy Concerns: Users may inadvertently share personal information or their location during a live stream, posing a risk to their privacy and safety.
- Stranger Danger: Interacting with strangers in a live setting can be risky. Young users might unknowingly engage with people who have malicious intentions.
Guidelines for Safe TikTok Live Usage:
- Parental Supervision: Parents, please supervise your children’s online activities and set guidelines regarding the use of TikTok Live.
- Privacy Settings: Encourage your child to adjust their privacy settings on TikTok to restrict who can view their live streams. By default, TikTok Live settings allow everyone to watch, but these settings can be changed to limit the audience.
- Education and Communication: Talk to your children about the potential dangers of live streaming and the importance of reporting any inappropriate behaviour they encounter.
- Encourage Responsible Use: Remind students to think before they share and to avoid revealing personal information or their location while live streaming.
- Promote Empathy: Teach children the importance of empathy and kindness online. Encourage them to support their peers and report any instances of bullying or inappropriate behaviour.
As a school community, it is our collective responsibility to raise awareness about the risks associated with platforms like TikTok Live. By fostering open communication, setting boundaries, and encouraging responsible online behaviour, we can help our students navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Together, we can ensure a safer online environment for our children.

Fostering Engagement and Student Wellbeing Towards the End of the School Year
As we approach the final stretch of the school year, it's a perfect time to reflect on the invaluable aspects that have defined our educational journey together: student engagement and wellbeing. At Chisholm Catholic College, these pillars form the foundation of our educational philosophy, enriching the learning experiences of our students and nurturing their overall growth.
Embracing Engagement:
Engagement, both in and out of the classroom, has been a cornerstone of our approach this academic year. Through interactive lessons, stimulating discussions, and collaborative projects, we've aimed to capture the interest and enthusiasm of our students. We've witnessed their active involvement, curiosity, and passion for learning, making our classrooms vibrant spaces of exploration and discovery.
Nurturing Student Wellbeing:
Student wellbeing is not just a priority; it's a commitment we hold dear. We have strived to create a supportive and caring environment where every student feels valued. Through counselling services, mindfulness activities, and initiatives promoting mental and physical health, we've worked to ensure that our students are emotionally and mentally equipped to face challenges and embrace opportunities.
Celebrating Achievements:
As we near the end of this academic year, we celebrate the achievements of our students. Every milestone, big or small, showcases their dedication and resilience. Their successes in academics, arts, sports, and acts of kindness reflect not only their talents but also the nurturing environment provided by our school community.
Looking Ahead:
As the school year concludes, our commitment to enhancing student engagement and wellbeing remains unwavering. We are constantly exploring innovative teaching methods, incorporating feedback, and refining our support systems to ensure that every student thrives academically, emotionally, and socially.
We encourage parents and guardians to join us in this Endeavor. Your partnership is invaluable as we work together to provide our students with the best possible educational experience. Your involvement strengthens our community and reinforces the importance of a collaborative approach to learning and growth.
In these final days of the school year, let's celebrate the accomplishments, cherish the memories, and look forward to a future filled with new opportunities. Together, as a united school community, we'll continue to foster engagement and prioritize the wellbeing of our students, making Chisholm Catholic College a place where every child can truly shine.
Meningococcal B (menB) Vaccination Program 2024
Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious infection caused by bacteria that can enter the body through the nose or throat. Around one-third of children and adolescents who survive meningococcal disease develop permanent complications.
Students in Year 10 are routinely offered free vaccination to protect against meningococcal strains A, C, W, and Y through Queensland School Immunisation Program (SIP). This vaccine is given in a single dose.
Beginning in early 2024, the Queensland MenB Vaccination Program will provide free meningococcal B (menB) vaccines to eligible Queensland infants, children, and adolescents. This change is in response to the emergence of menB as the most common cause of illness and death from meningococcal disease in Queensland.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (less than 2 years of age) and people with specific medical risk factors for invasive meningococcal disease are currently eligible for free menB vaccine through the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
The Queensland MenB Vaccination Program will make menB vaccines available for eligible infants, children and adolescents in addition to NIP eligible groups. The menB vaccine will be delivered in two does with a minimum of eight weeks between doses to ensure effective protection.
Please note:
- Parents of each Year 10 student will receive a pack containing an information sheet about both meningococcal vaccines and a consent form. Students will not be vaccinated unless a signed consent form has been returned to the school.
- Parents who did not receive, or misplaced the vaccination consent form, can download it at School Immunisation Program - Dataset - Publications | Queensland Government
- Parents can be reassured that both meningococcal vaccines are safe and effective against preventing meningococcal disease.
- People with certain conditions may require extra doses of meningococcal vaccines; they should talk to their doctor about individual circumstances.
- Adolescents aged 15-19 who are not vaccinated through the school program can get catch-up vaccines free of charge through a network of more than 2000 Queensland Health registered vaccine service providers, including GPs, community vaccination clinics and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services.
For more information, please visit: Queensland MenB Vaccination Program | Queensland Health

SECA Rugby 7’s Carnival
Chisholm entered a Year 7/8 Boys team into the annual SECA Rugby 7’s Gala Day Carnival in the final week of Term 3. With most students new to the game of Rugby Union, commitment to training was essential and the boys really grasped the Laws of game quickly and adapted their game play from Rugby League.
Chisholm was dominant on the day, winning all games and making it through to grand final play off and kept the grand final opponents scoreless to finish the carnival as Champions. Our ability to starve the opposition of the ball, avoid contact and quickly shift the ball to space worked incredibly well and all players are to be commended for executing their game plans and these tactics.
A special thanks to all players for their commitment and belief in themselves, and also to Mr Josh Damen and Mr Jake Rowles for their support and coaching on the day.
SECA AFL 9’s Carnival
The final SECA Gala Day of the year was the annual AFL 9’s Carnival. This sparked a great deal of interest among the student body to take part, attend trials and training. Participating on the day were four teams, Yr 7/8 Boys and Girls and Yr 9/10 Boys and Girls.
Our Chisholm AFL 9’s teams played extremely well in the hot conditions, producing some great efforts and incredibly competitive and/or dominant in their pool games. Both Year 9/10 teams played off for 5th 6th position finals, and our Year 7/8 Boys and Girls teams both made their respective Grand Finals after finishing top of their pools. Unfortunately they both went down swinging after putting in a valiant effort against very polished opposition teams.
The Chisholm students are to be commended for the behaviour, positive attitude and participation on the day. A special thanks must got to Year 11 students Bailey Burrows who umpired 8 games on the day to assist with officiating, and Izaak Gaan who assisted the Chisholm staff on the sidelines with sub rotations and messages. Thank you also to Mr Chris Siepel, Mr Patrick Lockyer, and Ms Vanessa Maguire for their help and assistance on the day.
All Schools Touch Football Carnival
The Chisholm Catholic College Touch Football journey began long ago in Term 1 where we called for interested female students to attend trials to get teams going. Our female sport participation levels were down after analysing the 2022 school year so as a measure to improve female participation a decision was made to start with our female teams at Queensland All Schools Touch Tournament for 2023. The teams, led by Coaches Ms Abi Vergunst, Mr Jake Rowles and Mr Matt Ellis spent countless hours training and strategizing, to get our students in shape for this tournament.
Throughout the regular SECA season and Gala Day Carnivals, our touch football teams exhibited relentless determination, consistently getting into the arm wrestle of the game with their opponents as they rucked for territory, attacked the try line and defended boldly putting their bodies on the line with each diving touch to stop a score being put on us. Each pass, sprint, and touch honed their skills, transforming them into cohesive units capable of taking on the best the state and overseas visiting teams to offer.
Each teams' journey was not without its challenges, injuries, fatigue, wind, rain….did I mention the wind. Runaway Bay Super Sports Centre became a wind tunnel for the 5 day Touch Football Tournament which added an additional element to contend with. They faced fierce competition, but their unity and determination never wavered. Through each pass, touch and try scored they showcased the very essence of touch football – a game that demands not only physical prowess but also strategic thinking and quick decision-making.
In the end, their hard work paid off and we were able to compete against some formidable opponents who have a long and rich touch history. With this, our Chisholm Catholic College re-launch of Touch Football, not even 9 months old, competing against many seasoned schools with many years having Touch Football Excellence programs ingrained in their schools, we can hold our heads high and know that we are moving forward in the right direction.
Congratulations to all of our players who committed across the year, the parents who came to support across multiple carnivals and to the coaches who gave their time, effort and vision to getting this program off the ground, Mr Jake Rowles, Mr Matt Ellis and Ms Abi Vergunst. Ms Vergunst has been especially inspiring to our female students as a positive female role model participating in training and really bring the positive vibes to our training sessions and tournament days.
Congratulations to..
- Joshua Potts who recently raced at the Queensland Secondary Schools Athletics Championships and also competed in the Somerset College Gift. Josh used the Somerset Gift as his last main hitout before the upcoming State Championships. Blasting out of the blocks to get a great start and also finishing strong to make up for the handicap marker given, he won 13/14 Year Boys Gift final. This confidence then carried with Josh into his performances over the past week at Queensland Secondaries. Josh finished up the State Championships with a 4th place in the 13 Years Boys 100m final last night (.15sec off 1st place) and a 4th place in 13 Years Boys 200m final, (.43sec off 1st place). He walked away with two legal PB's and two wind assisted PB's. For someone with under nine months of training and competition experience on top of some significant health issues the last few years his performance at the State Championships has been nothing short of spectacular! Well done Josh on your efforts and we can’t wait to see what the future will hold as you continue your athletics journey.
- Tadhg Sweeney, following on from previous newsletters singing Tadhg’s achievements, he recently won his division at the Australian Taekwondo Championships. His division is the Cadet division for his height and weight. Well done Tadhg for the achieving the title of Australian Champion for your chosen sport! All the hard work, hours of commitment and sacrifice have reaped an excellent reward for you.
