Mr Damian Bottaccio
As we quickly come to the end of the 2023 school year, there has been so much to celebrate over the past fortnight.
Awards Night
Our Awards Evening was a magnificent celebration, recognising the academic efforts and achievements of many students. In my address to the community, I referred to a speech from Matthew McConaughey. It was to highlight that there will always be challenges we will experience – that is life! It is how we embrace and accept these challenges that makes the difference.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3090/quote.jpg)
Success is relative – it isn’t and shouldn’t be about A's
I also expressed my gratitude to our parents who have sought to positively support their child’s efforts throughout 2023. Working in partnership with our teachers, who want the best for all students, so much is possible.
Congratulations to all who walked the stage. Stand tall and be proud.
Congratulations to the Seniors of 2023
We cannot wait to see what the future holds for each one of you. With ATAR results coming out on December 15, we will not have to wait too long! However, many students have already been accepted into university courses, have commenced employment or have secured apprenticeships and are already on the job!
Year 7, 2024 Orientation Day
This week, we welcomed our 2024 Year 7 cohort for their Orientation Day. The joy and enthusiasm on display indicates that we have an amazing cohort joining our FAMILY. The were ably supported by our 2024 Student Leaders and what a group of fine students they are!
We can’t wait for our Year 7s to start their high school journey with us next year!
Staffing
The following staff members have made significant contributions to the College and are moving onto new adventures.
- Mr John Martinac – Mr Martinac has served Chisholm Catholic College for 19 years. He has demonstrated great commitment to our College and students over this time. He will begin a new journey in 2024 and we certainly wish him the very best.
- Mr Lachlan Frazer – Mr Frazer leaves us after 14 years at the College. During this time he has positively impacted the lives of many students, most notably as the Pastoral Leader for Parer House. He has been appointed to the position of Curriculum Leader – Mathematics at Sophia College, Plainlands, where he will broaden his experiences; an opportunity too good to pass up.
- Mr James O’Sullivan – Mr O’Sullivan has been with the College for 10 years. He has held the position of Pastoral Leader – MacKillop for the last 5 years; this year he was in the role of Acting Program Leader – Student Engagement. Mr O’Sullivan will be taking on a teaching role at Iona College next year, closer to home and that provides new opportunities.
- Ms Madeline Fagan – Ms Fagan will be joining the team at St John Fisher College, Bracken Ridge, and FisherONE next year. This is an exciting prospect for Ms Fagan who will be much closer to home and family. Ms Fagan has been at the College for 7 years.
- Ms Elise Black – Ms Black has been with us for 2 years and during this time established herself and Visual Arts at the College. Ms Black has been appointed to a leadership role at Pacific Lutheran College, Sunshine Coast for next year. This would also see her living closer to her family. A huge opportunity for Ms Black.
- Mrs Eleni Greenaway – Mrs Greenaway commenced as Assistant Principal Religious Education last year. This year, she was working with Brisbane Catholic Education as an Education Officer. Recently, Mrs Greenaway was appointed APRE at San Sisto College, Carina.
- Mr Paul Kenyon – Mr Kenyon joined us last year as Academic Leader – Technologies. He has accepted an opportunity to work closer to home and within leadership. He will be joining the team at St Joseph’s, Coomera.
- Ms Kate Bowden – Ms Bowden joined us this year. She recently accepted a position at Trinity College, Beenleigh.
- Mrs Elsie Bredhauer – Ms Bredhauer commenced with us late last year. She has been very fortunate to be offered a continuing position at Ambrose Treacy College.
- Mrs Alice Dowden – Mrs Dowden has been a part-time Guidance Counsellor, working alongside Mrs Jacinta Murray. As Mrs Murray will be taking leave next year, we were unable to maintain Mrs Dowden for the full week commitment that would be involved.
- Mr Reuben Chalmers – Mr Chalmers stepped in as Acting Deputy Principal in May. In the absence of Mr Hodgson, he has been a very capable leader, supporting the staff and students with care and purpose. He returns to his role at Trinity College for next year.
- Ms Brenda Brohman – Ms Brohman stepped in during Term 4, following the departure of Mrs Jessica Walsh. Ms Brohman will be pursuing other endeavours for next year and we thank her for stepping in to the important role of ST:IE.
- Ms Josephine Fidow – Ms Fidow has been working alongside Mrs Fagan, sharing a timetable. Ms Fidow will be heading to the Northern Territory next year to take on a teaching role there. We may see her again in the future.
- Ms Cathy Hegarty – Ms Hegarty will be attending a school in 2024 where she will be teaching predominantly Japanese; a subject for which she holds great passion.
- Ms Kiri Crosby – Ms Crosby has been with us for Term 4. As an Early Career Teacher, Ms Crosby has shown that she will be a wonderful teacher.
I would also like to acknowledge School Officers and Administration staff who will be leaving us at the end of this year.
- Mrs Jenny Mehlert – Mrs Mehlert is the College’s Staff Secretary. After 9 years of loyal service to our community, she is looking at what her next journey will be.
- Mr Rob Hicks – Mr Hicks supports the Design Technologies staff and has done so for 9 years. He has made the difficult decision to retire,
- Mrs Jennifer Ashen – Mrs Ashen commenced working with us last year. As Personal Assistant to the Leadership, Mrs Ashen has supported staff and students alike with many events.
- Mrs Pinky Thomas – Mrs Thomas has been studying teaching whilst working as a Learning Enrichment Officer. Mrs Thomas has accepted a teaching role at Groves Christian College.
- Mr Goran Gagic – Mr Gagic has been with us for just over a year as Maintenance. He will be taking on a new position for next year.
- Miss Samantha Mitchell – Mrs Mitchell has been an effective Learning Enrichment Officer. We hope to see Miss Mitchell again.
Finally, Ms Melanie Schuhkraft and Mrs Jacinta Murray will be taking leave for the duration of 2024. Both await new additions to their families and we wish them good health and great joy. We look forward to their return in 2025.
Our blessings and best wishes are extended to all of these staff members. Our students are forever indebted to your service.
Blessed Holidays
As this is my final message for the year, I wish all families and those students and staff leaving the College best wishes and a safe Christmas season, and new year.

Mr Reuben Chalmers
Next Monday, 4th December, Academic and the final Approaches to Learning reports will be available via the parent portal. The student reports are yearly reports, giving overall results for the subject from all assessment completed throughout the year. During the holidays I encourage you to discuss the results from subject assessments and your child’s approach to learning. The holidays allow a good reset and reflection time for students to set goals, become organised and set good practices for the following year.
As the schooling year comes to an end, I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support this year: The partnership between student, parents and teachers is critical for successful schooling. For 2024, I hope that wherever your journey takes you, you are blessed with happiness and success.
God Bless and Merry Christmas

Mrs Kristie Mackle
This weekend marks the start of advent. Advent is a time of preparation, where Christians celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ.
On Friday, we celebrated our annual College Christmas liturgy, listening to the hope and peace offered by the birth of our saviour, Jesus Christ. Here is a few reflections held on the day.
For Catholics around the world, the birth of Jesus is the ultimate symbol of hope. At the time of his birth, the Jewish community was living in a period marred by long historical conflict, discontent, and persecution. The Jews had heard of a promised messiah that would save their people and bring salvation. In his adulthood, Jesus followers believed him to be that messiah, and they had hope.
In our world today, there is much to be hopeful for.
Hopeful for peace.
Hopeful for mercy.
Hopeful for togetherness and connection.
This Christmas, the birth of Jesus reminds us that the promise of peace, and the hope that promise brings, is never more prevalent and necessary.
This Christmas, may love come alive within your heart. May hope fill each room you decorate and bring joy to those you hold dear. May peace be before you at every meal and faith ring through every song. For Christ is alive, the light of the world, may He bless you all season long.
God Bless.

Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! As we celebrate the end of the 2023 school year, it is also time to recognise and acknowledge the growth our young people have had over the course of the year. According to leading education experts growth can be measured in a number of ways. It can be seen obviously in Academic results, a student who was previously a ‘C’ student is now moving towards a ‘B’ standard across the board. This is a tangible growth. Sometimes growth can not be quantitively measured, it needs to be a qualitative measure. We can see this in a more mature approach to study habits, a deeper understanding of and discussion around the learning that has taken place or event or in anecdotal observations.
In 2024, we continue to strive for ways to improve our students growth. The explicit focus in the teaching and learning space is how we use feedback to support student growth. Feedback is any response from a teacher that aims to improve a student’s performance or behavior. Feedback can be verbal, written or gestural, and can be formative or summative. Formative feedback is for revising, while summative feedback is for evaluating. Feedback should be frequent, constructive, instructive, personalised, and engaging. Feedback can help students learn and achieve better outcomes.
In order to facilitate this explicit focus, we would like to build upon the fantastic work that is already happening in the school but also would like to give the Chisholm community an opportunity to share their experiences with and around feedback. We are conducting a survey to understand how you perceive feedback that your child receives from their teachers. This data will be used to understand the community perspective on effective feedback in the classroom.
Your responses will help us to improve our feedback practices and strategies, and to ensure that we are meeting the needs and expectations of our students and their families. The survey is anonymous and voluntary, and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
Thank you for your participation and support. You can find the link here:

Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: Introducing the Peer Support Program
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new Peer Support Program, set to commence in 2024. This innovative initiative is designed to foster a supportive and inclusive school environment, where our Year 10 students will have the opportunity to become leaders and make a positive impact on their peers.
Training Day: A Transformative Experience
On Tuesday of this week, a select group of Year 9 students will embark on a transformative journey by attending a comprehensive training day. During this day, students will engage in workshops and activities aimed at developing essential leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. The training will equip them with the tools needed to guide and support the 2024 year 7 students, laying the foundation for a successful Peer Support Program.
Incorporating Peer Support into STRETCH
Starting next year, the Peer Support Program will become an integral part of our STRETCH pastoral care initiative. STRETCH is all about stretching our students beyond their academic boundaries, nurturing their holistic development. By integrating the Peer Support Program into STRETCH, we aim to create a more connected and empathetic school community.
A Milestone for Student Leaders
For most participating students, this will mark their first foray into the role of student leaders. The Peer Support Program provides a unique platform for these young leaders to develop their leadership capabilities, enhance their interpersonal skills, and contribute positively to the school's culture.
Building Connections and Support Networks
The Peer Support Program is not just about leadership; it's about building connections and fostering a sense of community within our school. By creating a network of support among students, we aim to enhance the overall well-being of our school community. This initiative aligns with our commitment to creating in environment where every student feels valued and supported.
Get Ready for an Exciting Year
As we embark on this exciting journey, we encourage all students to embrace the Peer Support Program with enthusiasm. Whether you are a participant or someone benefitting from the support, we believe this initiative will contribute significantly to the positive atmosphere at our school.
Stay tuned for updates on the Peer Support Program's progress throughout the year. We look forward to witnessing the growth and impact of our Year 9 student leaders as they embark on this empowering experience.
Here's to a year of leadership, support, and unity!

Movie World Excursion
We are thrilled about the upcoming adventure for our Year 7-9 students—an unforgettable excursion to Movie World! Set to take place this Thursday, the day promises to be filled with thrills, laughter, and other unforgettable moments.
Logistics and Schedule
The day kicks off at Melaleuca, where students will assemble before having their names marked off in their respective classrooms. This simple process ensures a smooth start to the day, and we appreciate everyone's cooperation in making this happen.
Departure from the College is scheduled for 9:15 am, so we kindly ask that all students arrive promptly to avoid any delays. Our journey will take us to Movie World, where the gates open at 10 am. We ask that students who have a pass to the park gather at the front of the line so they can be the first ones to enter the park.
Whilst at Movie World
As we step into the park, students will have the opportunity to explore the various themed areas, experience heart-pounding rides, and even catch a glimpse of their favourite movie characters. Students are asked to get their wristbands scanned at the home base staff will setup for the day, around lunchtime. At Home Base there will be teachers available for students all day. This is where the first aid station will be set up and where students can talk to teachers.
Return Journey
Our return to the College is scheduled for 1:30 pm, ensuring that students are back in time for dismissal at 3 pm.
What to Bring
To make the most of this day, students are advised to bring a packed lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Comfortable clothing, sunscreen, a hat and suitable footwear for walking are also recommended to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The weather forecast shows very high temperatures for Thursday, so please make sure that your child is well prepared.
Safety First
The safety and well-being of our students are of the utmost importance. We want to assure parents and guardians that appropriate safety measures and supervision will be in place throughout the excursion.
Thank you for your ongoing support and let the Movie World adventure begin!

Final Merit Slip Barbeque
Celebrating Student Achievements with Merit Badges and the final House Barbecue.
In 2022, we introduced the Merit Slip system, empowering our dedicated staff members to acknowledge students for their outstanding service, exemplary behaviour, and academic accomplishments. Students accumulating 15 Merit Slips earn a prestigious bronze badge, while those reaching 30 receive a distinguished silver badge. The pinnacle of achievement comes with the gold badge, awarded to students amassing an impressive 50 Merit Slips.
As the term concludes, we celebrate the collective efforts of our students. The Merit Slips collected throughout the term are tallied, and the House with the highest count is honoured with a festive barbecue for the entire House. This term, the spotlight shines on two exceptional Houses—Flynn and Namatjira—both securing victory. The sizzling celebration unfolded on Thursday of Week 8, creating a memorable moment for all involved.
It's truly heartening to witness the recognition of numerous students for their unwavering efforts. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the success of Flynn and Namatjira Houses this term!

Mrs Jade Matijevic
Week 9 has arrived and both staff and students are busy tying up loose ends and looking ahead to the exciting prospects of 2024. On Monday, the staff and student leaders of 2024 were gifted an exciting look ahead and a preview of who the 2029 graduates of Chisholm Catholic College were, at our Year 7 Orientation Day. Year 6 students, from numerous surrounding primary schools walked into our College gates yesterday for their first taste of life as a Chisholm Catholic College student. In the morning students got to know their House and Pastoral Leader and were introduced to their Pastoral Care Teacher. After morning tea, students, guided by our student leaders, participated in a highly competitive scavenger hunt, getting to know the layout of the buildings and meeting many staff along the way. In the afternoon students experienced how a typical classroom lesson would run and a practical HPE lesson.
At 1:30 the mixed collection of uniforms that had spent the day together, forging new friendships and experiences, exited the school grounds, and for all who were involved in the day it was very clear that 2024's cohort of Year 7s was a great bunch of students with great potential. We are very much looking forward to their return next year, only this time presenting as a united group, all wearing maroon and green.

Speaking of heading off for holidays and returning in 2024….
Now is also the time to congratulate all our students for another year of learning. I hope that each student is heading into the school holidays feeling that they have invested what was needed to ensure that their year was successful, and that they feel proud of what they have achieved. It has been a big year, and I would like to wish all students and their families a safe and rest filled break, along with a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2024!
School Student Broadband Initiative
The School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) will remain open until December 2024 with free nbn broadband services for all new and existing families continuing until 31 December 2025.
To support students that do not have access to a nbn broadband internet connection at home, the Australian Government has committed to the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI). If a family is eligible for the SSBI, a home internet service will be provided at no cost through a participating internet provider over the nbn network.
The connection period starts from the day the service is activated. Other members of the household are also free to use the internet service provided through SSBI. The initiative does include a modem/router supplied to the family by the participating internet provider but does not include devices such as a computer or tablet.
What this means for families:
- For existing SSBI families who have already signed up, this means their SSBI service will automatically be extended until 31 December 2025 (no further eligibility checks or additional information from families will be required).
- For eligible families who connect before the end of this year, they will get up to two years of free nbn broadband. Vouchers previously issued will remain valid until 31 December, 2024.
- Please note: any new connections made over the next few weeks will initially be offered 12 months free internet with the plan automatically extended until the end of December 2025 in due course.
Essentially the sooner families sign up for the program, the longer they can benefit from free internet at home.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the SSBI, families must meet the four criteria below:
- Have a child living at home who is enrolled in a BCE school.
- Not have an active nbn® network internet service currently connected at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- Have your suitability determined via an assessment conducted by the National Referral Centre.
- Live in premises that can access the nbn network via a standard connection.
How can families check their eligibility?
To check your eligibility, follow these simple steps.
- Contact the National Referral Centre on 1800 954 610 (Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm AEDT), or www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet. Callback and webchat functions are also available via the website.**
- Check your eligibility – the NRC team will assess your eligibility, by checking your residential address and asking you some questions to determine if you meet the Government’s eligibility criteria.
- If eligible, you will be issued a voucher which can be redeemed at any of the participating SSBI retail service providers. The National Referral Centre will also be available to assist with contacting your SSBI internet service provider of choice or providing follow-up support.

Last Thursday we came together to celebrate the camaraderie among students, the memories forged over the year and the dedication of all those involved. Throughout the year, Chisholm took part in four different eisteddfods this year – the most external opportunities thus far. With every performance, the teams showcased their remarkable talent and dedication, achieving score that ranged from the mid to high 80’s (out of 100). While results aren’t what truly matters, the teams did place with Highly Commendeds and Very Highly Commendeds over the course of the eisteddfod season and are to be congratulated on these results against highly competitive competition. Through their tireless efforts and electrifying performances, the Chisholm performance teams stood as shining examples of what passion, hard work and unity can achieve.
Can’t wait to see these students return to the stage in 2024. Auditions for the 2024 Dance teams will take place during Week 2 of Term 1, 2024.
