Mr Damian Bottaccio
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Celebrating Learning Success
Last Thursday, we welcomed back to the College some of our 2023 graduands. Amidst the many great accomplishments of our students, we took time to acknowledge the students who achieved a notable ATAR.
We also announced Alisha Hill as our 2023 College Dux. This announcement comes after the release of final results during December, where Alisha attained an ATAR of 98.0. We are proud of all of our students. Many have commenced University last week, with most entering their first preference for study. This is important!
It is important to highlight that there were also many students who commenced study at TAFE a few weeks ago and then there are those who have pursued a Traineeship or Apprenticeship. We regard all efforts as being important and celebrate these successes. It is an example of what we believe at Chisholm Catholic College – we are committed to the holistic education of students. Our role is to provide an education that allows students to reach the next stage of their journey, and no one path is more important than another.
Year 7 – A Great Start
This week, the second group of our Year 7 students will attend camp at Bornhoffen PCYC. We have been very encouraged and impressed by how our Year 7s have commenced their journey at the College. Certainly, the feedback from the first camp group highlighted their enthusiasm and willingness to take positive risks, whilst also demonstrating respect for others.
Last Tuesday evening, we held the third Parent Engagement Evening for 2024. The focus of the presentation was on supporting Year 7 parents with such things as Homework and Study. It was great to see so many parents in attendance.

Lent
The most important season of the Church is upon us, Lent. It commenced with our Ash Wednesday liturgy, held on Wednesday, 14th February. The 40 days leading up to Easter and the death and resurrection of Jesus is a time of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Almsgiving is particularly important, as we pledge to give alms (support) to those less fortunate than us. Giving assistance to anyone less fortunate and needing help in an intentional way during Lent is one way of understanding our role in the world as disciples of Jesus. Project Compassion is the central way in which we at Chisholm Catholic College during Lent, contribute to almsgiving. Each student is asked to support by bringing loose change to Pastoral Care classes each day and place their donations in the Project Compassion boxes. Watch this 4 minute video for your first hand information on where we can make a difference this Lent. Let’s be generous and embrace the Project Compassion theme.
Introduction to Project Compassion 2024 (youtube.com)
Have a great fortnight!
God Bless

Assessment
As we come to the last five weeks of Term 1, students will be preparing for assessment items, either assignments or exams. This is a good opportunity for families to discuss study schedules and a good time to start (or to continue) to look at when assessment is due and if there are times when assessment is clustered together. This will help you to plan ahead. Due dates are available for the students in the Assessment Calendar that is available on the Parent Portal to help with your planning. A balanced weekly schedule will support the students in completing their assessment on time and to the best of their ability.
If you have any questions or queries about the assessment your child is completing, please always ask their teacher(s) in the first instance. They are best placed to give you the information you require.

Mrs Kristie Mackle
Lent – a time for prayer, almsgiving and fasting.
As we delve into the season of Lent, it's a wonderful opportunity for reflection, renewal, and service within our school community. Lent is a period of 40 days observed by Christians worldwide, leading up to Easter Sunday. It symbolizes the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, facing temptations and preparing for his ministry. During Lent, we are encouraged to deepen our spiritual lives through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It's a time for self-examination, repentance, and acts of compassion. One significant aspect of Lent is almsgiving, which calls us to reach out to those in need and to give generously from our hearts.
Fundraising – Caritas Project Compassion
As a College, we will continue our partnership with the Caritas Project Compassion, an initiative that focuses on aiding communities worldwide by addressing issues such as poverty, hunger, healthcare, education, and disaster relief. The theme this year is “For All Future Generations” and we invite all members of our community to give generously through one or more of the following channels:
- Bringing in a cash donation to place into the PC boxes
- Scanning the QR code (below) and making an electronic donation
- Participating in the casual clothes day (Friday, 8th March 2024) with a gold coin donation.
- As a part of this day, all coins will be lined up and a celebration held for the house with the longest line.
- Purchasing hot chocolates and croissants for International Women’s Day (Friday, 8th March 2024).
- All proceeds will go to Project Compassion.
- Participating in the Walk for Water (Term 2, Week 1).
- As part of this day, students can bring additional gold coins for some exciting ‘extra items’. We will keep you posted on this exciting development!
In 2023, we raised $2,300.00 for Project Compassion, and we as a school are dedicated to bettering that total this year! A group of dedicated teachers have promised some very special “live challenges” for milestone amounts, and we encourage students to follow the Chisholm Chargers account on Instagram for updates!

Year 9 Formation and Year 12 Retreat
Last week, on Friday 23rd March, our Year 9 students participated in a Formation Day hosted by Real Talk. It was a great day and the students enjoyed the chance to step away from their studies to explore the pressures of relationships, sexuality and identity. Thank you to Real Talk for an amazing day!
All Year 12 families have been sent a parent slip for participation in Retreat via email. We ask all families to please complete and return the form by 4th March 2024. This retreat is always popular amongst students as a chance to disconnect from the pressures of senior schooling, reflect on what has been a journey of self-discovery and growth over their formal years of schooling and plan for the next adventure!
God bless.

High Achievers 2023
At the High Achievers assembly on Thursday of Week 5, we recognised those students who have achieved above 85 in their ATAR results from the 2023 cohort. These are the students who have scaled the academic peaks with unwavering determination and resilience. These are the students who have not merely followed the path; they’ve blazed trails, leaving behind footprints that inspire our fellow Chisholm students. It was a reflection of their ambition, a reflection of their can-do attitude, a reflection of how they approached their studies and the phenomenal efforts they put into their schooling.
I asked the high achievers a series of questions on stage to get a sense of their collective qualities. I asked them to step forward if the statement for them was true.
- I have never ever procrastinated until the last minute and still aced the assignment.
- I have never underestimated the power of a good night’s sleep.
- I have never skipped a class just because it was early in the morning.
- I have never settled for “good enough” when I knew I could excel.
- I have never ignored my study planner or calendar.
- I have never skipped study to binge-watch an entire season of a TV show.
- I have never pulled an all-nighter just to cram for an exam.
They stepped forward proudly as a group for most of these questions. This showcased that those students exhibit those necessary qualities to be excellent. Excellence requires ambition, good study habits, accepting of challenges as moments to grow and the need to put in effort.

I left the students with the words of the great poet Robert Frost:
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
So, I say to all our Chisholm students take the road less travelled. Be curious, be daring, and be relentless. Your ATAR scores are not just numbers; they’re stepping stones to your future. And remember, the greatest achievements often emerge from the smallest, consistent actions. Current students, please take small consistent actions and you too could be standing proud on that stage one day.
The Importance of Full and Complete Drafts
We are coming into the phase of the term where students will start to hand in checkpoints and drafts for many of their subjects. I wanted to take the opportunity to emphasise the importance of submitting full and complete drafts. This is not only for academic success but also for overall wholistic growth.
Feedback: When your student hands in a full draft, they’re offering their teacher a valuable opportunity. Detailed feedback allows teachers to identify areas where your child excels and areas that need improvement. In this way students have an opportunity to grow.
Timely Intervention: Imagine your student submits incomplete final assessment, and the teacher spots a critical flaw. Had they turned in the full draft earlier, the teacher could have intervened promptly. Complete drafts enable teachers to identify and prevent major pitfalls.
Specific Guidance: Teachers genuinely want to see your student succeed. A complete draft allows them to provide specific advice. Instead of vague comments like “work on clarity,” or “incomplete” they can provide specific feedback. For example “This thesis needs refining; use more concrete examples and links to the topic.”
Practice Makes Perfect: Submitting a full draft is akin to practicing an instrument or perfecting a dance routine. Each iteration or practice hones their skills—ideas become clearer, structure tightens, and language refines. It’s a journey toward excellence.
I strongly encourage students and parents to embrace the opportunity that a full draft presents. A complete draft isn’t just a requirement; it’s an opportunity for growth.
Assessment Calendars
A reminder that all assessment calendars are on the Parent Portal and that all students have received a digital copy of these as well. These are an important planning and organisation tool that students can use to manage their school-life balance.

Year 7 Camp
In Week 4, the first group of Year 7 students attended their camp at Bornhoffen in the beautiful Gold Coast Hinterland. Over the three days, student activities included creeking (by far everybody’s favourite), the giant swing and leadership and teamwork games.
This week, the second group will attend this amazing camp. Students are required to be at the College at 8.30am so we can depart at 9am. After the second camp, a full report will be posted in the Week 8 newsletter. Stay tuned.

Caroline Chisholm Cup
The Caroline Chisholm Cup (Chisholm Cup) is an annual Inter-House competition that is contested between the six houses of the College – Flynn, MacKillop, Namatjira, Oodgeroo, Mitchell and Parer. 2024 marks the second year of the Carline Chisholm Cup. The Chisholm Cup is comprised of nine events that are contested across the academic year with an annual winner announced mid Term 4 before the Year 12 students graduate. The Caroline Chisholm Cup events include Volleyball, Swimming Carnival, Cross Country, Athletics, Touch Football, Basketball, Attendance, Merit Slip collection and Project Compassion.
This term, students have competed in the Swimming Carnival with the winner of the carnival announced during last week’s College assembly to be Mitchell House. The Mitchell House students proudly hung the House banner on the wall in Melaleuca.
Last week also marked the start of the volleyball competition. The games are played on Thursday’s during Lunch 1 and 2 during which Melaleuca is full of students proudly competing for their House. The Caroline Chisholm Cup is a fantastic opportunity for students to compete for their House, meet new friends and communicate with staff.

MYCE Presentations
Last Thursday many students in Year 8, 9, and 10 were presented with a badge to recognise their successful earning of the MYCE. MYCE stands for Middle Years Certificate of Education and is our way of recognising students who have generally achieved academic success over the course of a year. Awarded students achieved a C- or higher in the 3 core subjects that they must study in senior, in addition to achieving a C- or higher in at least half of the remaining subject areas studied over the course of the year. It does not require students to achieve complete success across all subjects and therefore, to a degree, recognises that students may have interests and abilities in a particular group of subjects.
The MYCE badges awarded to students compliment MYCE, as all successful students received the same badge, with the only variation being the colour. The colour badge students received was dependent of the Year level of work the MYCE was being awarded for. Year 7s were awarded white badges, Year 8 - green badges, and Year 9 – maroon badges. MYCE Badges will be awarded each year and it is hoped that all students are presented with a MYCE badge for the work they had completed in the previous year. It is also anticipated that when awarded their final badge in Year 10, students will have earned all 3.
We would like to congratulate the students who received their badge last week for their work done in 2023, and encourage all students in Years 7-9 to continue to work hard in their classes to find success and ensure that their time at school is of value to their future ambitions.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN preparations are well underway, with many of our Year 7 and 9 students having sat practice tests over the last 2 weeks. To ensure that all students are able to participate in the remaining practice and the official NAPLAN Tests, please check your child has corded headphones, and that they are packed for school. Corded headphones are required for the majority of tests and students without them may not be able to sit the test with their cohort, and instead sitting the test in a catch up session.

Year 10 Career Development Program
As your child has begun the journey of exploring future career paths, we invite you to engage in meaningful discussions about their interests, strengths, and aspirations. This week students completed the Harrison Career Assessment tool during their STRETCH lesson. We encourage you approach these conversations with openness and curiosity, starting by reviewing the results together. The assessment provides valuable insights into your child’s greatest strengths, task preferences, interests, and preferred work environments, based on their responses.
Rather than focusing solely on specific job titles, we ask you to emphasise the importance of aligning your child’s skills and passions with various industries and roles. Encourage them to reflect on the assessment findings and consider how they resonate with their own experiences and aspirations. It is important to foster a supportive environment, where students feel empowered to explore different options is crucial. Remember, these discussions are not about mapping out a rigid career plan but fostering self-awareness and confidence in navigating their future endeavours.
Your support and encouragement throughout this process are invaluable. Please take time to engage with your child, ask open-ended questions, and explore additional resources together. We look forward to working in partnership with you to help your child discover their passions and build the foundation for a fulfilling future.

Networking - Time to start
“Networking, now?” I hear you say. Networking is a valuable tool in your personal, educational and professional world. Networking isn't about getting to know people, not becoming first best friends, but developing social and professional relationships with them. How to network when still at school? Smart thinkers and planners start networking early no matter what pathway you are planning on after school. Build a positive and professional relationship with your parents' friends, friends' parents, coaches, teachers, co-workers at work etc. Become comfortable talking with them about your career goals, study options and career aspirations. Start researching especially establishing a LinkedIn account. You just never know who knows who knows who!
Where do we need to be in 2027?
Australia will need to fill more than one million new jobs by November 2026. In 2021, the National Skills Commission forecast employment growth in regional Australia would account for around one-quarter of new jobs over the five years to November 2025. Nine out of ten jobs are projected to require post-secondary school qualifications. Given the expected strong demand for workers and resilience of the Australian labour market, full employment is within reach. Interhouse Swimming Carnival
The 2024 Interhouse Swimming Carnival was a great day, with awesome weather that encouraged huge levels of participation. Over 200 swimmers taking part in competitive 50m races and more than 400 students taking part in the participation side of the pool.
A massive congratulations to all students for their behaviour on the day and to all staff for their assistance in ensuring the Carnival ran smoothly.
Congratulations to Mitchell House for taking our overall line honours on the day.

Mr Brendan Taylor
Greetings SEDA Students, Parents and Guardians.
Training sessions have seen excellent numbers; watching all the students get stuck in has been a privilege to witness. Over the past week we’ve handed out the uniforms. If you haven’t received yours yet, please see your coach.
Parents, Guardians, Caregivers and Visitors: There are a number of competitions and trial matches happening in the upcoming weeks, so please be on the lookout for parent slips. These are a non-negotiable and must be digitally signed prior to your student attending. In addition, while I have loved seeing family and friends come and support, all visitors must sign in via Main Reception before heading down to the fields. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
A reminder to all students, please see the below table to find training times. It is an expectation that you attend all training sessions available to you. This is often where teams are selected.

Rugby League:
The seniors have their first trial games this week on the 29th. We will be heading to Clairvaux MacKillop College. We also have an all-student Rugby League intensive day on the 7th of March where we will be visited by the Redcliffe Dolphins’ development officer. During that afternoon we also host Trinity College in our final trial game before announcing our 2024 Confraternity Rugby League team. It would be awesome to have all students on that afternoon stay to support the squad trialling. Best of luck for these games, Chisholm.
Football:
The SEDA Football students kicked of their QFSL campaign on the 20th February and against Loganlea SHS. There were some super impressive talent on display at Chisholm with many teams winning in convincing fashion. Junior Girls: Chisholm 5 vs Loganlea 5, Senior Girls: Chisholm 10 vs Loganlea 0, Junior Boys: Chisholm 15 vs Loganlea 0, Intermediate Boys: Chisholm 10 vs Loganlea 1, Senior Boys: Chisholm 6 vs Loganlea 4. We are set to host Balmoral on the 5th March.
We also begin our SEQ Futsal campaign on the 26th of Feb and 4th of March. Hopefully our teams have significant success on the day and progress through to the knock-out stages. Best of Luck Chisholm.

Netball:
The netballers have their first competition, Week 7, Friday 8th March. This is the Southside Super 7s. Students have been working hard during their SEDA classes and during their SEDA training sessions. It should be an awesome day out. Teams have been posted on the SEDA netball Cupboard inside Melaleuca. Best of Luck, Chisholm.

Library Lovers’ Day in the Library
On the 14th of February we celebrated Library Lovers’ Day at first break. One of our Library Technicians, Miss Rose Brimson, created a beautiful display that the students took full advantage of throughout the day. Proposals were made, relationships displayed, and the students showed us how they felt about their friends on this special day! A special shout out to the students below for their participation!
