Mr Damian Bottaccio
The end of Term 1 has come very quickly. It appears at times that the pace of the modern world is getting faster, it certainly isn’t slowing down. Reflecting upon this, I am conscious that for effective learning to happen, the environment has to be one where there is a sense of calm and certainty. I thank our staff for seeking to achieve this and believe that there have been many positives achieved over the last 10 weeks. Yes, there are the many co-curricular events and activities that are on offer, but I am more concerned with what is happening in the classroom. We have committed to ongoing improvement through an emphasis on feedback. Though it may not be immediately visible, our staff have been developing an understanding and confidence with effective methods for providing feedback. As the year progresses, their efforts will become visible and we will be able to celebrate successes and achievements.
I also extend my congratulations to the many students who turn up to school prepared for learning, and who display focus and optimism in their classes. We have seen a notable improvement in attendance for many students; this is a positive sign of engagement. This is the starting point for success to be attained. When visiting classrooms, we see students who are engaged and actively working on the learning that has been set; responding well to each other and their teacher. Our students are very capable and we need to recognise that.
I look forward to being in more classrooms next Term, affirming with our students and staff the great progress that they are making.
ANZAC Day Service and Commemorative March
We are inviting students, parents and staff to participate with Chisholm Catholic College at the Springwood and District RSL Commemorative March for ANZAC Day on Thursday, 25th April. A Parent Slip will be sent to all families. Your involvement is much appreciated.
An ANZAC Day Service will be held at the College on Wednesday, 24th April. Parents, you are welcome to attend. If we have any ex-service or currently serving parents, we would welcome your involvement. Please contact us via scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au
ANZAC Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have fought and died for their country, and is marked annually on the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service, past and present.
Term 2 Return to School – Monday, 15th April
I look forward to beginning Term 2 and remind students and parents to be ready to start on Monday, 15th April, with all materials for learning and the correct personal appearance and uniform requirements.
Happy Holidays and Easter!
As we continue our Lenten journey towards Easter Sunday, I wish you all a happy and holy Easter, and hope there is some time for rest and renewal for you and your family.
God bless!

Mr Alexander Hodgson
As we come to the end of Term 1 it is now time to reflect on the many successes for Term 1 and to consider the importance of the Easter period for Christians throughout the world. The end of Lent and Easter brings sadness when reflect on Good Friday but then we have the joy and hope that Easter brings with the resurrection. We hope that we can bring that sense of hope and joy with us for the rest of the year when we return refreshed after the Easter break.
Term 2 is filled with opportunities for students to shine in many areas of school life. We have the Cross Country in Week 1 and the Interhouse Athletics in Week 10 to finish the Term. They are great events where students can 'have a go' and show their support for their House. We also have SECA Season 1 where students will have the opportunity to represent the school in a variety of sports and activities. Musical rehearsals will continue, and students will also be able to participate in our ANZAC Day services along with the activities for Chisholm Day in May. Therefore, I would encourage all students to avail themselves of the many opportunities that are presented to them next term. It is often a rich and rewarding experience to be involved in these co-curricular activities and it is a great way to be part of the Chisholm Family.
I wish you all a safe and Holy Easter and I look forward to seeing all the students return reenergized for a new term after the break.

Year 12 Retreat
Last week, our Year 12s enjoyed a three-day retreat to Coolum at the Sunshine Coast. The cohort created the theme Make the Moments Count, and through the program students explored who they were, what brought them to this point of their lives, and what they envisage for their future. They challenged themselves, laughed a lot and made plenty of memories along the way. Thank you to the amazing staff who joined us - Mr Bottaccio, Mrs Ibell, Mrs Scott, Ms Nielsen, Ms Conomos, Ms Pascual, Ms Reardon, Mr Allen, Mr Glennon and Mr Cronk. We also thank our Year 12s for leaning into the opportunity, and more making a commitment to making every moment count this year! We hope you look back on Retreat with fond memories and joy!

Holy Week
This week is Holy Week. In the tradition of our Catholic Faith, Chisholm will take pause to reflect on the story of Jesus’ passion. As a community, we are invited into the story of Jesus’ return to Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), last supper with his disciples (Holy Thursday), crucifixion (Good Friday) and Resurrection (Easter Sunday). On Thursday, Years 7 – 11 will gather for liturgy, where we will trace the footsteps of Christ, contemplating his teachings of love, forgiveness, and sacrifice. We hope that Easter is indeed a time for renewal for all, in whatever ways you celebrate.
May God bless you this easter season!

“You Get What You Give”: Commitment, a value for life!
At this time of the term, we reflect on the teaching and learning that has happened over the last 10 weeks. This is summed up in the Curriculum Spotlight video that is shown during the whole College assembly. I always try to select music fit for purpose. This term was inspired by music from the New Radicals. The New Radicals had it right when they sang “You Get What You Give”. This principle is not just a call to action but a reminder of the power we hold over our destinies. It is a reminder to students to control the controllables, be present and do their best.
I spoke to students directly around “You Get What You Give” and how it tied in with one of our core values – Commitment. The effort invested in their studies directly influences the results they receive and the knowledge acquired. It’s about giving all—being on time to classes, participating actively, completing assignments to their best ability, and studying diligently. Remembering, the more students engage in classes, the richer their educational experience will be.
Chisholm offers a variety of extracurricular activities, from sports teams and art clubs to rock bands. When time and energy is given to these pursuits, students are rewarded with new skills and friendships. But beyond that, students gain a sense of connection and accomplishment that can’t be measured.
I encouraged students to look towards the future, and to consider how the energy they put towards their goals now will pave the way for success later. It is important that students live by the “You get what you give” philosophy and apply it to every facet of their lives. By doing so, students can thrive, connect and set themselves up for success in the future.

Earlier this term, we sent out a bullying survey to all members of our community. Thus far, 31 parents/carers have taken the time to answer the survey. To gain a proper understanding of this societal issue and how we can best address it at Chisholm Catholic College, we would like to ask as many parents/carers to complete this survey before Friday 29 March. Please scan the QR code or follow the link to access the survey. Thank you for your time and efforts which assist us in addressing this issue and provide our students with the supports they need to safely navigate the social context we live in today.

Mrs Danielle Jorgensen
We congratulate our fantastic Year 7 and 9 students who participated in NAPLAN testing between March 14th and 21st. These dedicated young learners approached the assessments with focus and a positive attitude. Their commitment to their studies is truly commendable.
While official results won't be available for some time, we're confident that our students performed well. We've been consistently impressed by their hard work in class and dedication to developing strong literacy and numeracy skills. NAPLAN is a valuable tool providing a national benchmark for student achievement. It helps us identify areas where our students excel and areas where we can provide additional support.
We want to acknowledge the fantastic efforts of our teachers who have tirelessly prepared the students for NAPLAN. Their dedication to creating a positive learning environment and fostering a love of learning is vital to student success.
Finally, a big thank you to the parents and carers who encouraged and supported their children throughout the testing period. We look forward to sharing the official NAPLAN results with you when they become available. In the meantime, keep up the excellent work, Year 7 and 9.

Quick facts about apprenticeships and traineeships
- Apprenticeships and traineeships combine work with structured training.
- Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time, part-time or school-based - where some training is undertaken while the apprentice or trainee is in high school.
- Apprenticeships and traineeships can be completed part time but not on a casual basis.
- Existing employees may undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship.
- Apprenticeships and traineeships require employers to enter into training contracts and a commencement contract with the apprentice or trainee, which is a legally binding agreement to work and train together for a length of time.
- Employers work with a training organisation and the apprentice or trainee to negotiate a training plan and training record.
- Training options must be negotiated and outlined in the training plan. Aspects of training that are open to negotiation (subject to training package requirements) include selection, content and sequencing of competency units, timing, location and mode of delivery and trainer or facilitator.
Visit the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training website for more information.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships
The term ‘Australian Apprenticeships’ covers both apprenticeships and traineeships. They start when an employer creates a job and decides to use this pathway for employing and training staff.
- They are available to anyone of working age with eligibility to work in Australia.
- There are no specific school levels, certificates or other qualifications needed to start one.
- They offer opportunities for you to train, study and earn an income at a variety of Vocational Education and Training qualification levels in many occupations and can be full-time, part-time or school based.
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship allows you to start your training while you are still at school and will contribute credit towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). You can find out about school-based apprenticeships and traineeships on the Apprenticeships Info website

Gap Years – Make them Meaningful with a Purpose
- Taking a year off after Year 12 will not necessarily help if you are unsure of your career path. Without a plan, a year out of formal education can see you spend your time ‘having a good time’ only. Alternatively, a formal gap year is known to offer many significant benefits.
- In a formal gap year, you could take on structured activities such as paid-work, volunteering and other forms of self-development related to possible future career options. This type of gap year enables you to try out a range of activities that can assist you in your career decision making. According to research, students who have a purposeful gap year are less likely to drop out of further study pathways. There are many organisations offering gap year opportunities so research well and plan carefully. Include your parents/guardians in your research.
The GAP Network – Placements in UK Boarding Schools
The Gap Network provides support to the growing demand for Gap Year placements in UK Boarding Schools. From the Cultural Leaders:
As this year’s Cultural leader, I've been closely involved in our Music Ministry, which includes One AChord, our string ensemble, and the senior band. It's been a meaningful journey, especially with recent events like the Opening Mass, House Masses, and the upcoming Easter Liturgy.
Our Music Ministry has been essential in these events. The collaboration among One AChord, the string ensemble, and the band has been impressive. The Opening Mass marked the start of the academic year, and our music helped set the tone of celebration and reflection. House Masses provided a chance for us to connect with peers in a smaller setting, fostering community within each house. The upcoming Easter Liturgy is another amazing opportunity for us to share our talents and build confidence while creating a positive environment.
One aspect that I love about Music Ministry is how it helps vocalists gain confidence and serve the community. Whether performing the National Anthem or participating in liturgies, these opportunities not only showcase people’s musical abilities but also instill a sense of responsibility and leadership, filling them with confidence to make a positive impact in the school.
Beyond these events, I've been lucky enough to be involved in this year’s musical, The Wiz, which has been incredibly rewarding. This production is helping me to grow as a performer and leader while creating lifelong friendships. Being one of the leads has given me the opportunity to work with like-minded people towards a shared goal. These opportunities aren't merely performances, they're avenues for personal growth and shared development.
Through music, we've created a space where talent flourishes and confidence soars. Overall, I couldn't be prouder of the Music Ministry this year and the profound impact it continues to have on our community.

Year 12 Cultural Leader 2024
Chis Culture is at the heart of our community with many things going on lately. So far this year, Culture at Chisholm has been prominent in some things at the college such as Assemblies and the opening mass where one AChord vocal ensemble, string ensemble and band served the community through songs.
For more current matters, the production of The Wiz is running well, as the cast and crew are right on target (Congratulations, and well done to all the members!) Both the Bands: Cali Creek Girls and The Senior Rock Band, have been working on some new songs that we are excited to share with the community, and we deeply appreciate those who are supporting us through our journey as musicians and artists.
Other Co-curricular activities such as the Art Club are creating many awe-inspiring projects and running smoothly and are improving their talents wonderfully.
Lunch Box Theatre is creating wonderful opportunities for young stars to shine and is running intendedly so.
Term one has been productive but busy, and we hope for term two to be the same, if not better!
Thank you!
Mayah R, Deputy Cultural Committee Leader 2024
Harmony Day Performance Testimony:
I was performing with my band "CaliCreek", and the atmosphere when you are up in front of a crowd that is full of supportive people is just amazing! The amount of people standing there, supporting us will always surprise me. Performing with the band is just an electric feeling and there is a sense of unity, not only between us, but also with the senior band members. Harmony Day was so fun to be part of and performing with some of my closest friends is something that just ends the week perfectly and will always be in my memories.

Curious, Creative and Inspired
Art is a powerful means by which to develop creativity, inner peace and balance in students worlds.
This term, Year 8 Students have been exploring the theme of ‘Steam Punk’ in amazing moving and mechanical sculptures. Student’s characters appear to be floating and operating as machines in this amazing Art experience.
Students have analysed the creations of Shaun Tan, experimented with totemic animal ideas and adorned them with steam punk objects. The results are amazing! Student’s imagination and ideas have come to light! Looking forward to more artful experiences in Term 2 ,2024.

"Art club is student’s favorite thing that they look forward to every Thursday. It invites students to connect with people with the same hobbies/interests. There are always fun activities to create whilst vibing along to your favorite songs. There are always new lessons to be learned and relationships to be made."
