Tell Them From Me – Parent/Carer Survey
Last week I sent home a survey to all parents/carers. I would really appreciate as many surveys as possible being completed. At this stage only 9% of parents have completed the survey!
It is important to our College and to me that our community has a voice. I can assure you that the information gathered will be used to increase the connection between home and school. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. It is also a follow up from the 2023 survey.
With such a small number of parents completing the survey, the results will be unrepresentative and may therefore be of little use. It is often the case that those who are happy with something are less likely to take the time to complete these sorts of surveys. As a consequence the results end up skewed and we have no clue if parents are actually happy with things or would like change to occur. I am very conscious that parents/carers are frequently sent requests to complete surveys and that there can be a perception that they aren’t used.
The Tell Them From Me Parent Survey closes this Friday 24th May.
Our Partnership – Part 2
In my last newsletter article I referred to our sustained effort to partner with parents/carers in the education of our students.
This was on display at the Student Led Conferences – where around 830 interviews were completed for around 240 students. Our staff demonstrated their commitment to supporting both students and parents/carers, with discussions focusing on strategies to achieve success and improvement. I am also aware that a number of staff were already speaking with or meeting parents/carers around the timing of the SLCs.
Tomorrow night we have our second Parent Engagement Evening for Term 2. The focus for this evening is Building a Bully-free Community – A Night of Awareness and Action. This is an important issue, one that impacts on the lives of many young people and their families. We want to work with parents/carers around how we can best respond, together. I implore as many parents/carers as possible to attend.
The following week, on Wednesday, 29th May, our Year 10 students will have their Careers Day. From 4:00-6:30pm there will be SET Planning Presentations and a Careers Expo (open to Years 10-12). This event and the presentations are directly intended to support students and parents/carers with Pathways choices and the best decisions possible with regards to Senior Subject selections.
An important aspect of our partnership is maintaining positive and productive relationships. To this end, I would like to refer all parents/carers to the Brisbane Catholic Education – Code of Conduct for Parents and Visitors that has been adopted by all of our schools. It highlights how we can best work together in support of our students. A copy of the Code of Conduct can be found on our College website and the Parent Poral (Policies).
Chisholm Day – Friday!
This Friday we celebrate Chisholm Day!
It is a significant event on our calendar, celebrating the birthday of our College’s namesake. The day commences with a liturgy in the morning and will include a recognition of National Sorry Day. We will then head to the oval for the remainder of the day to enjoy and celebrate the occasion. More information will be provided later in the Newsletter.
To ensure that we ALL have a good day, it is important that the expectations are known and supported.
God bless!

Student Led Conferences
I would like to thank all of the parents and students who participated in the Student Led Conferences on Tuesday 7 May. Many families were able to engage with the conferences and it was pleasing to see the way that parents and students were able to engage in quality conversations with our staff. The Student Led Conferences provide an excellent opportunity for consultation and collaboration between the staff, families and students and with over 800 conferences held it was pleasing to see the number of families who were able to take up the opportunity to engage with the teaching staff.
Year 12 IA1 Report
Year 12 students will be issued a report for their IA1 results on 11 June. This will be for all General and Applied subjects. The report will reflect their results for their first assessment piece and not for all of Unit 3 as IA2 results for General Subjects are not confirmed until September.
BCE Connect App
The BCE Connect App is recommended to all parents and carers.
As an example, the App allows parents/carers to report student absences, including late arrivals and early departures – in the last week we have had numerous examples of a parent/carer arriving at school to collect their student; delays in collecting their student could be avoided if the App was used to notify of the early collection.
The app can be downloaded via the following links:

Mother’s Day liturgy
Thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers and significant women in our community who joined us for our Mother’s Day liturgy. It was so lovely to celebrate you and acknowledge the significant roles you play in our lives.
To all the mothers in our community we hope you had a blessed Mother’s Day!
Year 11 formation day
On Wednesday last week, the year 11s took time away from their studies to participate in their Formation day. This was a day of reflection, preparation and growth as the cohort prepares to step into the role of senior leaders in 2025. Throughout the day we reflected on the call to lead, what this means to each of us and how, through the examples of Caroline Chisholm, we are called to Live’s Christ Challenge in service. Thank you to Character Builders, Ms Rackley and Mrs Ibell for organising and overseeing a fabulous day!
National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week
This Sunday 26th May is National Sorry Day, a day that remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.
The week that follows is National Reconciliation Week, and at Chisholm, we will engage in a number of school-wide activities that aim to promote understanding, respect and peace. The theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, reminds us that the fight for justice must continue. We encourage students to get involved in the variety of activities that will occur across the week as we commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
A prayer for sorry day and reconciliation:
Merciful God,
Stir within us a desire for compassion and reconciliation. Help us to recognise the pain of the past. We pray for the stolen generations and lay before you the brokenness that this separation has caused. Walk with us as we journey towards a future that is just and equitable.
Amen

Year 10 Careers and SET-Planning
In the coming weeks, your Year 10 student will be preparing for their Set-Planning interview. You will receive email communication around the process for using the online system to select subjects and interview times in the coming weeks. Many parents might be already familiar with the process and are ready to support their child’s senior subject choices and some parents may be daunted by the process.
The Senior Education and Training (SET) plan is a tool and process designed to help students map out their learning pathways during the senior years of school and plan for their future after graduation. The plan supports students in working toward qualifications such as the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA), Senior Statement, VET qualifications, or viable work options.
To help students choose suitable pathways, we work with a team of teachers trained in Set-planning. It is a formal interview where students are expected to be prepared, completed the required questions and critically reflected on where they want to be next year or post-schooling.
My advice between now and the interviews which will be occurring in Term 3, Week 1 is to familiarise yourself with the work your child has undertaken in their Stretch classes this semester. Ask to see their OneNote, their Harrison’s report on their strengths and weaknesses and their research into their chosen career. As part of this familiarisation, encourage your child to reflect on their interests, strengths, and aspirations and discuss their preferred subjects, career interests and the qualifications required for those potential career paths.
I would also strongly encourage parents to help your child set some goals. What are the short-term goals? Do they need to improve their results in one area? What is the end of year goal?
The other consideration is preparing students to ask questions. This is a great opportunity for students to ask about subject choices, vocational education or career options.
Remember that the SET-plan interview is an opportunity for your child to express their aspirations and receive guidance. Encourage open communication and celebrate their progress!
Year 12 Confirmation of General Results
The confirmation of Year 12 results is a significant milestone for students completing their final year of high school. From this week IA1 confirmed results will be visible on students’ profiles. These will be gradually released over the coming weeks and students should be checking this data is correct. Any errors should be communicated

Addressing Inappropriate Online Interactions Among Students
In recent weeks, we have observed an uptick in inappropriate online interactions among our students, particularly on social media platforms such as TikTok and Snapchat. As we navigate this digital age, it is essential to equip our children with the tools and understanding they need to engage responsibly online.
Understanding the Issue
Social media can be a double-edged sword. While it provides opportunities for connection and learning, it can also be a platform for negative behaviour such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content sharing, and harmful interactions. These incidents not only affect the well-being of our students but can also have long-lasting implications on their mental health and academic performance.
Strategies for Parents
Here are some strategies and resources to help you guide your child towards safer and more respectful online behaviour:
- Open Communication: Encourage open and honest conversations about their online experiences. Create a safe space for your child to share without fear of punishment. Understanding their online world can help you guide them better.
- Set Clear Expectations: Establish clear rules about appropriate online behaviour. Discuss what is acceptable and what is not, emphasizing the importance of respect and kindness.
- Monitor Activity: Keep an eye on your child’s social media use. This doesn’t mean invading their privacy, but rather staying informed about their online interactions and the platforms they use.
- Educate About Privacy: Teach your child about the importance of privacy settings and the potential risks of sharing personal information online. Encourage them to think before they post and to keep their accounts private.
- Model Good Behaviour: Be a role model in your own online interactions. Demonstrate positive and respectful communication and highlight the impact of digital footprints.
- Use Available Resources: There are several Australian resources available to help parents navigate these challenges. The following organizations offer valuable information and support:
- eSafety Commissioner: The eSafety Commissioner’s website (www.esafety.gov.au) provides extensive resources on online safety, including tips for parents, reporting tools for cyberbullying, and educational materials for children.
- Kids Helpline: Kids Helpline (www.kidshelpline.com.au) offers 24/7 online and phone counselling for young people. They also have resources for parents to support their children’s mental health and well-being.
- Parentline: Parentline (www.parentline.com.au) is a confidential telephone service providing professional counselling and support for parents. They offer advice on various parenting issues, including managing online behaviour.
- Encourage Offline Activities: Promote a balanced lifestyle by encouraging your child to engage in offline activities. Physical exercise, hobbies, and face-to-face social interactions are crucial for their overall development.
Conclusion
Navigating the digital landscape can be challenging, but with the right strategies and resources, we can help our children develop into responsible and respectful digital citizens. At Chisholm Catholic College, we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment both online and offline. Let’s work together to ensure our students thrive in every aspect of their lives.
If you have any concerns or need further support, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Pastoral Team, Guidance Counsellors or myself.
Student Carpark – Ensuring Safety for all
In recent weeks, we have observed an increase in inappropriate behaviour in the student car park. These behaviours include students parking in the staff car park, parking without a permit, and transporting other students to and from the college. This conduct not only violates our school policies but also poses significant safety risks to all members of our community.
Safety First
The primary concern for Chisholm Catholic College is the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. The student car park is designed to provide a safe and organized space for students to park their vehicles. However, recent behaviours have compromised this safety and created potential hazards.
Policies and Expectations
To ensure the safety and efficiency of our car park, we ask all students and parents/carers to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Permit Parking: All students who drive to school must have a valid parking permit. These permits help us manage the car park and ensure there are enough spaces for everyone. Students without permits are not allowed to park in the student car park. The permit must be displayed when students are parked in the student car park.
- Designated Parking Areas: Students must park in the designated student car park. Parking in the staff car park is strictly prohibited. The staff car park is reserved for teachers and staff who require easy and quick access to their vehicles throughout the day.
- Safe Driving Practices: Students must drive responsibly within the school grounds. This includes adhering to speed limits, following traffic signs, and being mindful of pedestrians.
- No Passenger Transport: Students are not permitted to transport students who are not on their permit to and from school unless they have received explicit permission from the school administration. This rule is in place to ensure the safety of all students and to prevent any potential accidents or liabilities.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
If the current behaviour in the student car park continues, we will have no choice but to close the student car park indefinitely. This action is not taken lightly, but the safety of our community is our top priority. We believe that with your cooperation, we can avoid this measure and maintain a safe and orderly car park for everyone.
Parental Involvement
We ask parents and carers to discuss these guidelines with their children and ensure they understand the importance of following these rules. Your support is crucial in reinforcing the importance of safety and responsibility.
Conclusion
At Chisholm Catholic College, we are committed to providing a safe environment for our students and staff. The proper use of the student car park is essential in achieving this goal. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Let’s work together to maintain a safe and respectful community for all.
If you have any concerns or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school administration.
Program Leader – Learning and Pedagogy
In the bustling world of learning at Chisholm, the value of students being prepared for learning cannot be overstated. When students arrive with their equipment ready and primed with completed homework, assignments, and questions, they are not merely passive recipients of information but active participants in their learning process. Preparedness fosters a sense of ownership in education, encouraging students to take the reins of their learning journey. This shift from a consumer to a producer mentality empowers students to engage more deeply with course material, ask insightful questions, and contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions.
Our year 8 project-based learning classes have provided us with inspiring instances of this. Here, students are not mere recipients of knowledge but have seized the reins of their learning by actively participating and steering their inquiries. The passion for learning that is being demonstrated is inspiring, with many students going above and beyond what is required delving into their inquiry questions and class activities.
The prepared student paves the way for collaborative learning environments where ideas flow freely and peer-to-peer interaction thrives. Through collaborative knowledge sharing, students not only strengthen their understanding of the subject matter but also cultivate essential interpersonal skills vital for success in academic and professional spheres. Beyond immediate academic gains, they are fostering a culture of preparedness and nurturing lifelong learning habits that transcend the classroom.
By developing skills such as time management, critical thinking, and information synthesis, students equip themselves with invaluable tools essential for navigating the complexities of an ever-evolving world. The discipline and diligence fostered through preparation serve as cornerstones upon which individuals can build successful careers and lead fulfilling lives grounded in a thirst for knowledge.
So, let us embark on this journey together, armed with the conviction that preparation is not merely a prerequisite for success but a catalyst for transformative learning. By encouraging students to come to class prepared with equipment and complete homework and assignment tasks, ready to learn and engage, we can work to ensure Chisholm Catholic College students are prepared for whatever the future holds.
Tell Them From Me Survey
We are inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite parents/carers to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community, we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Chisholm Catholic College.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

SECA Cross Country
Best of luck to all College runners who will take to the track on Wednesday 29 May and represent Chisholm at SECA Cross Country. A full report of results will be placed in the next newsletter.
SECA Sport
Well done to all teams for their efforts across this season. Staff have mentioned that in only a short space of time, from the students first game to their final fixtures, there was rapid improvement, an increase of learnt skills and confidence shown out on the courts/fields. A massive thankyou to all the Chisholm College staff who so readily prepared and took our students out to SECA activities in Term 2. Without their help and assistance, these days would simply not occur.
Students will be nominating shortly for their Term 3 SECA options, with Mr Ellis giving multiple days/opportunities for students to see or contact him to confirm selections or make changes. There is some flexibility for movement in those activities run at College that do not involve competition against other schools. Students are advised to speak with their friends and find out what sport/activities they would like to participate in. Students in SEDA Football/Basketball, our new Touch Football program and those in the College Musical - must select these activities as SECA forms a vital part of your agreement to these programs/activities.
Interhouse Athletics Carnival
Our Chisholm College Interhouse Athletics Carnival will be run on the final day of Term 2, Friday 21 June. An information booklet about this event will be sent out shortly to all students and College families, outlining the days procedures, expectations, pre-events held before the actual carnival, the nomination process for District/further representative school sport levels, and SECA Athletics team selection.
Congratulations to..
The following students who have qualified for the upcoming South Coast Cross Country Championships: Hamish Fox, Josh Jacobs, Archer Miller, Carter Murray, Pyper Shannon, Jarvis Cox, John Moloney, Toyea Low, Felicity Lawler, Hannah Rooney. We wish our runners the best of luck as they race to qualify for the Queensland Secondary Cross Country Championships.
If our students have achieved exceptional things in the Sporting arena, please send them through so we can recognise and celebrate these achievements.

Seda News
Greetings SEDA students, Parents and Guardians. I want to start by commending all our students with their continued commitment to the SEDA program. Continued efforts and commitment to before and after school training has been exceptional. I’d also like to acknowledge the parents and carers who change and adjust plans for our students week in, week out.
Football
QFSL
All age groups have played round games against Robina in recent weeks with a lot of victories and some great goals scored. A highlight has been the intermediate boys keeping their 100% record. This competition has been an excellent addition to the football program giving students quality competition.
Bill Turner Cup
One of the biggest school football competitions in the country. This is a country wide elimination tournament. We came away with 3 from 4 wins. Although we won't progress to the next stages of the tournament, we are proud of the efforts throughout the day. This included teams from Loganlea, St Thomas Moore, Redeemer Lutheran College and Indooroopilly SHS. Our players competed and represented Chisholm with great pride on the day. Well done!
ISSA and Uhlsports Cups
The U14 boys will be opening their ISSA campaign playing Kimberly and Livingston next week to complete their group games. They are hoping to continue on their good form and look to clinch a spot in the knockout stages. All the best boys!
The Open boys won a very tough opening match in the Uhlsports Cup defeating JPC on home soil. They won 2-1. They are looking to continue their winning streak against Livingston next week.
Students have been keeping their fitness levels up with our regular lunch time futsal tournaments. It is always great to see students bringing down new faces and involving the community, particularly the year 7 and 8s.
Basketball
Students continue to work hard on Wednesday morning trainings vying for positions in the upcoming tournaments.
The Gold Coast Invitational is the next big event set to take place on Wednesday 4th to 7th of July, the last weekend of the school holidays. This year the tournament has unfortunately downsized, in that, the previous three age group competition is now only two. We will be selecting a year 7-9 and year 10-12 team to represent Chisholm towards the end of this month.
Netball
Our SEDA Netball teams have been shining bright this term, showcasing their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship at various events. Proudly representing our school, they've displayed exemplary behavior and a fierce competitive spirit. At the recent South Side Super 7's carnival, our seven teams showed their strength, with our junior squad going undefeated and three others securing top 3 positions. It was a fantastic display of talent and dedication! SECA has seen our teams climbing the ladder with consistency, especially our undefeated opens team. It's not just about winning; it's about giving it your all every time you step onto the court. Let's not forget the recent Vicki Wilson carnival where our teams continued to impress. Our QISSN junior development team secured a solid 3rd place, while our Senior QISSN team emerged as undefeated champions! None of these achievements would have been possible without our dedicated staff team, who have been the backbone of our success, supporting our players every step of the way. Let's continue to support and cheer on our SEDA Netball teams as they continue to represent our school with pride and determination.
Rugby League
Opportunity, Opportunity, Opportunity. The Rugby League team has made some great connections this year with the Redcliffe Dolphins, Redland Bay Rugby League FC and now Bailey’s Ladders (Major Sponsor of the Brisbane Broncos). These relationships have bought about some fantastic opportunities for our Rugby League young men. We have had our first visit to the Dolphins training facility and will tour the Broncos Facilities in a fortnight.
Redcliffe Dolphins Visit:
It was a wonderful day and the boys seemed to really enjoy the experience of visiting an NRL facility, watching the team train, and meeting some of their idols. The group met a few ex-NRL players who spoke about the wellbeing side of the game. One key take away they wanted the boys to have was that they need to be good people in their communities, this includes school. They spoke about trying their best every day in all aspects of their life, giving maximum effort and always asking for feedback in seeking to improve, not only with their skills for rugby league, but also in their other subjects like Math and English. This is one message which we have constantly preached as a rugby league program at Chisholm and will continue to do so as we know the potential these young men possess to be wonderful leaders and role models. The boys also learned a bit about fuelling their bodies and nutrition, which hopefully has an impact on their dietary intake, particularly when we have carnival days like SECA. Massive thank you to Troy Clarkson, Shane Morris and the Dolphins for facilitating our visit. We hope to bring the boys back again to learn more soon.
Touch Football
Since its inception in 2023, our Touch Football program has been a beacon of success, and 2024 is proving to be no exception! On Friday, May 10th, we fielded a whopping six teams, encompassing U13, U15, and U18 categories for both girls and boys at the Logan Schools Cup. Our students, adorned in school colors, showcased not only their skills on the field but also their exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship. With three teams storming into the grand finals, the excitement was palpable. Our U18 girls emerged as champions, sealing their spot in the prestigious South Queensland All schools tournament slated for August. What a sensational achievement! This success story wouldn't be complete without a massive shoutout to our incredible coaches. Their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts have been instrumental in propelling our teams to new heights. A special round of applause to our MVPs of the day: Eloise Wessling (U13 Girls), Ethan Ward (U13 Boys), Zali Douglas (U15 Girls), Kalem Richards (U15 Boys), Jasmine Roff (U18 Girls), and Cooper Robinson (U18 Boys). As we continue to ride the wave of success, let's keep the momentum going and strive for even greater victories ahead.
