Mr Damian Bottaccio
The end of the Term is upon us, though there is still much planned for this week! I take the opportunity to reiterate the need to be at school up to and including the final day of term. For most year levels, though assessment may have been finalised for the Semester or Term, the commencement of new learning will begin. Certainly, for students in Years 11 and 12, all learning contributes to the completion of their Senior Studies. Further, our efforts to build a FAMILY can be seen this Friday, when we gather on the oval for the Interhouse Athletics Carnival – opting in is always the best way to go!
In the last couple of weeks we have seen numerous examples of students seeking to do their best. What has been even better is the way in which other students have actively encouraged those efforts. The various ‘Expos’ or ‘High Teas’ or ‘Displays’ have been tremendous examples of learning at its best, let alone community. I loved having students provide me feedback on my goals for retirement, seeking to apply a ‘real world’ application for their studies – the knowledge they displayed was years ahead of what I knew at the same age! At last week’s assembly, likely to be later in the Newsletter, a video showcasing student learning from across the term was presented – there was much laughter and joy. We have much we can be proud of!
I would like to thank all of our staff – Teachers and School Officers/Administration. They have committed to working collaboratively in support of our students’ learning. It has been another massive term, and they keep turning up in the best interests of our students. I also thank the many students who have made every effort to do their best or who have sought to improve. Early next term we will recognise the efforts and achievements of our students’ and know that there will be many worthy of recognition. And rightly so!
Parents and Community Association (PCA) – AGM and General Meeting
At the recent PCA AGM and General Meeting there was much discussion about the proposed funding models and subsequent vote. It was a challenging conversation, noting that the preferred model would see the PCA disband its current operations and take on an advisory role in relation to how P&F Levies are used to support the College. Further, the number of attendees made it difficult to make such a decision on behalf of all parents; my sincere thanks to those who attended.
The model endorsed, now means that the incorporated functions of the PCA will cease. Nonetheless, the participating members of the PCA and I committed to maintaining the purpose and place of the PCA – a place and time for parent engagement, and to provide opportunities for parent voice.
PCA Executive:
- President – Mrs Candice Thompson
- Vice President – Mr Simon Blowes
- Secretary – TBD
If you would like to be considered for the remaining role of Secretary, please contact me via scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au. Support would be provided to anyone who is interested.
I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the outgoing PCA Executive. Particular thanks to Mr Craig Donohue, who has been President for approximately 4 years and active member since 2019. Craig is committed to our College and has been a strong voice for our students and parents. He took direct responsibility for many of the PCAs support of College activities, such as Chisholm Day and welcoming new parents. Thanks also to Mrs Julieanne Hansen, who has been the Treasurer for the last 3 years. Julieanne has provided a considered voice on PCA matters, but particularly on finances, seeking to ensure that any compliance requirements were sustained. I hope that they both continue to be active members, such is the respect I hold for their involvement and support.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 15th July. It is open to any parent/guardian, or member of the Chisholm Catholic College community. Come along and bring a friend!
Staffing Changes
The following staff members have made significant contributions to the College and are moving onto new adventures.
- Mr Doug De Jong – Mr De Jong has served Chisholm Catholic College for 10 ½ years. During this time, he has demonstrated great commitment to our College and students, particularly within the Performing Arts. He is taking time to be with family and to pursue other opportunities in Music education.
- Mr Leon Geissler – Mr Geissler leaves us after 10 ½ years at the College. He is greatly respected, having most impact with students who have pursued Design Technologies through to their Senior Years. Mr Geissler is taking on a teaching role at Clairvaux MacKillop College, Mt Gravatt, where he will be much closer to home and have time with family.
- Mr Bryce Lalor – Mr Lalor has been with us for 2 ½ years, serving as Oodgeroo House Pastoral Leader. He accepted a leadership position at Trinity College, Beenleigh and is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities it will bring.
- Mr Wil Hsu – Mr Hsu has been our IT Manager for 2 years. He recently commenced a similar role at Redlands College.
Our blessings go with these staff members. We thank them for their service and wish them all the best with their next adventure.
Finally, Ms Jasmine Knox and Mrs Kaitlyn Sanders will be taking leave for the remainder of 2024. Though, Mrs Sanders has a few more weeks with us in Term 3. Both await new additions to their families and we wish them good health and great joy. We look forward to their return at some point in 2025. Mrs Ashleigh MacAllister also took leave a few weeks ago to welcome the latest addition to her family – Maxwell Brian MacAllister.
Term 3 Return to School – Monday 8th July
I look forward to beginning Term 3 and remind students and parents to be ready to start on Monday, 8th July, with all materials for learning and the correct personal appearance and uniform requirements.
I wish all members of the Chisholm FAMILY a happy and safe break!
God bless!
Damian

Infinite Care - Year 9 Service Learning
This term, over 100 year 9 students volunteered for an exciting service-learning opportunity at Infinite Aged Care Cornubia. The Intergenerational Program is an opportunity for students and Infinite Care residents to connect with each other, build relationships and share stories and life-wisdom. This endeavour aligns explicitly with our College Charism values of Commitment, Integrity, Love and Mercy. Group 1 has started us off this term, with groups 2, 3 and 4 attending into terms 3 and 4. Our students have been amazing ambassadors to the College and all reports indicate they are truly valuing the time spent at Infinite Care making connections with others. Congratulations year 9 students and thank you Mr Stevens, Mrs Ibell and Aunty Christine (Mrs Campbell) for accompanying and supporting our students on this journey.

Explicit Improvement Agenda - Student Feedback
As the Assistant Principal in Curriculum, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of feedback in our learning community. Feedback is not just about correction; it’s about connection, growth, and, most importantly, ownership. Next semester, we will have an explicit focus on students and how they can be empowered by actioning feedback and by giving feedback.
Feedback is a gift, albeit one that sometimes comes in unexpected packaging. Learning to unwrap it, to understand its contents, and to use it effectively is a skill that will serve students well beyond our school. It’s not just about hearing what others have to say but actively listening and seeking the value in their words.
Equally important is the ability to give feedback. It’s a science that requires precision—knowing what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. It’s also an art that demands empathy and understanding. When you provide feedback to your peers, you’re not just helping them improve; you’re helping build a community of learners who support and uplift each other. Studies have shown that peer feedback and collaborative learning groups has a significant impact on student growth and understanding of how to improve.
Students are the most crucial part of the feedback loop. Students engagement, reactions, and actions determine the effectiveness of the feedback received and given. When students take ownership of this process, they are not just completing an assignment; they are taking charge of their learning journey.
Think of feedback as stepping stones across a river. Some stones may be wobbly, and some may be firm, but each one is essential to help cross to the other side—learning goals and aspirations. Embrace each piece of feedback and step forward with confidence.
As we approach the end of the semester, I encourage all of our students to reflect on the feedback they’ve received and given. How has it shaped their learning? How have they used it to support your peers? And most importantly, how will they carry these lessons forward?
At Chisholm feedback is not just a one-way street; it’s a bustling highway of ideas, advice, and encouragement. We all need to continue to drive our learning forward, together.
Wishing you all a reflective and empowering end to the semester.

Social Media Use, Parental Responsibility, and AI Risks
As we navigate the digital age, social media use among our students is increasingly significant. At Chisholm Catholic College, we acknowledge the benefits social media offers but also recognise the challenges, including exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and other harmful behaviours. Additionally, with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, there are new risks and considerations to be aware of. While we support students in developing responsible digital habits, monitoring and guiding your child’s social media use is primarily your responsibility.
Key Points:
Age Recommendations: Experts often recommend that children should not use social media until they are 16 or older, as older teens are better equipped to handle its complexities. We urge you to consider these guidelines.
Parental Supervision: Actively supervise your child’s online activities. Set boundaries, understand the platforms they use, and discuss appropriate online behaviour and consequences.
Responsibility and Consequences: Issues like cyberbullying, bullying, or inappropriate content arising from social media are your responsibility to address. We do not control content or interactions outside school hours or on personal devices.
Online Bullying Concerns: Online bullying is a serious issue that can affect children’s emotional and psychological health. If your child is involved, take immediate action and communicate with them about the impact of such behaviours. Seek our pastoral care team’s support if needed.
AI-Generated Content Risks: The rise of AI technologies has introduced new risks. AI can create realistic but false information, videos, and images, potentially leading to misinformation, online scams, or harassment. It is crucial to educate your child about these dangers and teach them to critically evaluate the content they encounter online, including the emergence of Deep Fakes in school communities.
Educational Resources: We offer resources and workshops on online safety. We encourage you to use these to support your child in making safe online choices.
Collaboration and Support: Ensuring a safe digital environment is a joint effort. If you have concerns about your child’s online behaviour, including exposure to AI-generated risks, please contact our pastoral care team for assistance.
In conclusion, while social media and AI technologies can be valuable tools, it is essential for parents and carers to guide their child’s online behaviour and address any issues like bullying and the dangers of AI-generated content. Together, we can help our students navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.

Year 12 Future Pathways Meeting and QTAC Applications
Term 3 is a very important and busy time for Year 12 students. For students who have not made decisions about what they would like to do in 2025, now is the time to access information about your options. Below is a selection of events and activities that will assist with decision making.
QTAC
The QTAC online application platform opens on Thursday, 1 August 2024. To prepare for this, and to explore other training or work preferences and goals, all Year 12 students have received a Future Pathways planning document. Students should complete this document before their Future Pathways meeting next term, regarding of whether they wish to study at university or TAFE, seek traineeships or apprenticeships, or transition straight to work. The purpose of the Future Pathways meetings is to discuss plans and consider QTAC preferences if applicable. QTAC guides have been provided to interested students to assist with planning and QTAC will release the online version shortly. Note: closing dates for some courses and scholarship applications can vary so read your QTAC book carefully. Further information about the application and offer process can be found at QTAC.
QTAC Application Portal
ATAR eligible students need to apply to QTAC to receive their ATAR. The ATAR portal opens on 1 August, 2024. Students will need their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) number to register. Note: this is in addition to a QTAC application.
Scholarships
Most university scholarship applications open in Term 3 and close between October – December. An exception is Bond University, which has its scholarship applications open now and each scholarship can have a different closing date – check Bond Grants and Scholarships. All universities have a scholarship section on their website – it is recommended to look up processes and due dates early to avoid missing out – if in doubt about your chances, apply!

Changes to Australian Apprenticeships from 1 July
From 1 July 2024, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations is engaging Australian Apprenticeship Service Delivery Providers (Providers) to deliver focused help that better supports apprentices and their employers from before the apprenticeship starts to its successful end. Providers will work with apprentices and employers from before an apprenticeship starts to identify individual needs, help apprentices to find the right pathway and support employers to better understand their roles and responsibilities in the workplace. Providers will also provide support throughout the apprenticeship. Click here to read more about:
In Year 12 - it's time to start looking for that job after school
It is sometimes challenging to work out where to start looking for an actual apprenticeship or traineeship. The Queensland Government's Find an apprenticeship or traineeship website is a good place to start. While it won't find you an employer to hire you, it will give you some ideas for looking for a potential employer including:
- Visit specific apprenticeship/traineeship job boards
- Use job search and government vacancies websites by entering a job title with 'apprentice' or 'trainee' and your chosen industry to narrow down results
- Talk with training organisations, local TAFEs and Australian Apprenticeship Support Network providers
Click on the link above which will take you to valuable links and valuable information.
What is a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification?
The National Careers Institute says that a vocational education and training (VET) qualification is a formal certification awarded by a training provider in recognition of the successful completion of an occupational or work-related knowledge and skills-based educational program. There are eight types of VET qualifications:
- Certificate I, II, III and IV
- Diploma
- Advanced Diploma
- Graduate Certificate
- Graduate Diploma.
All VET qualifications must be listed on the National Register, training.gov.au. Visit the Australian Qualifications Framework website for more information regarding VET qualifications.
Do you have what employers are looking for?
JobJumpstart reports that the Australian Government surveyed more than 3000 Australian employers to find out what advice they would give to young people looking for a job. Employers said they look for:
- a positive attitude
- motivation and enthusiasm
- someone who is prepared to learn and take direction.
They also said that applicants need to:
- be punctual and dependable
- be respectful to colleagues and customers
- show a commitment to staying in the job for an acceptable period of time.
Employers also mentioned that some young people have unrealistic expectations of work, including:
- being unprepared for the demands of the workplace
- the level of pay they would receive
- wanting to start at the top instead of working their way up.
Give yourself a rating so you can keep up the good work and/or work on the areas where you can improve and be job ready!
What’s the difference between a Registered Nurse, an Enrolled Nurse and a Midwife?
Registered nurses (RN) assess, plan, provide and evaluate preventative, curative and rehabilitative care for patients and supervise other nursing staff. They work in a wide variety of settings such as hospitals, aged care and other health care facilities and private medical practices. To become a RN, you need to complete a three-year Bachelor of Nursing at a university or other accredited institute of higher education. RNs are required to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency: Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. You can obtain more information about this occupation from the myfuture website (you will need to Log in or Sign up to enter this free site) and the Good Universities Guide website (this site has a list of nursing specialisations).
Enrolled Nurses (EN) under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurses, assist with the provision of acute, preventative, curative, rehabilitative and the day-to-day personal nursing care of patients. They work in hospitals, aged-care facilities, the community and other healthcare settings. To become an EN in Australia, the minimum level of study is the Diploma of Nursing (18 months – 2 years), delivered through TAFE or an accredited private Registered Training Organisation. After graduation, ENs apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency: Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia to practice as an Enrolled nurse. You can obtain more information about this occupation from the myfuture website (you will need to log in or Sign up to enter this free site) and the Good Universities Guide website.
Midwifes provide care and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and childbirth and postnatal care for women and babies in a range of settings such as the home, community, hospitals, clinics and health units. They are also known as a Certified Midwife or Registered Midwife and can specialise as a Community Midwife and/or Midwife Practitioner. A bachelor degree in midwifery is needed to work as a Midwife. Some Midwives complete postgraduate studies. Midwives are required to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency: Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. You can obtain more information about this occupation from the Labour Market Insights and the Good Universities Guide website.
The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) recently launched the new Work in Rail website to promote rail careers and provide practical information on pathways for people looking for a job in the industry. It includes a range of tools to help school leavers, tertiary students and people in other industries to find their career in rail. Check it out!
Use the school holidays wisely - Work experience and/or exploration may be a good option
An important strategy in career exploration is experiencing the job you are interested in. This can be undertaken in many ways:
- Work observation – spending a day or more with someone already in the job at their workplace
- Career interview – developing a list of questions and interviewing someone already in a job you are investigating
- Work experience – spending some time (a week if possible) in the job
- Investigating courses by visiting institutions and talking to them about their courses
- Getting a part-time job or volunteering in a job you are interested in
- Doing a course or workshop that relates to the type of work you want to do.
The school holidays are a perfect time to do some of these activities. If you need help organising an activity, speak to your school Guidance Officer/Counsellor/VET Coordinator for some assistance.

Mr Brendan Taylor
On the 29th of May, our senior boy’s rugby league team were lucky enough to visit the Brisbane Broncos training facilities. The boys were put through their paces by some ex-NRL players including Andrew McCullough. The training session helped prepare the team for The Confraternity Shield Carnival later this month. The drills the team worked through reminded the players to play flat and direct with our eyes up, taking what the defence gives us. They stressed the importance of keeping our football simple, run hard, make our tackles, and hold onto the ball. Last Thursday night we celebrated the selection of the QISSN and Confraternity teams at the jersey presentation evening. These athletes have shown great dedication and commitment to their sports with preseason starting term four, 2023. Both the boys and girls are excited to be taking to the courts and fields representing our Chisholm community. I know you’ll all do us proud!

During the school holiday break, a group of young men from the college will head up to Townsville to represent Chisholm Catholic College at the Annual Confraternity Shield. On the 22nd of June, the senior rugby league team fly out on their quest to lift the Confro Cup. It has been a long season, starting back in Term 4, 2023 with over 30 players trialling and training. The squad was selected earlier this year and since then, the team has enjoyed a successful build up to the carnival including wins against Trinity College, McAuley College, and Emmaus College. The team finished 3rd at SECA and went down in a close lose to winners Clairvaux MacKillop. The boys are extremely excited to get out on the field and represent our community. We are confident that the team will not let anyone down. Games will be livestreamed; the link is below, please watch on and support your Chisholm Chargers. Best of luck gentlemen, we know you will make us proud to call ourselves chargers.

Some of students in the rugby league program are participating in The Push-Up Challenge this month. The Push-Up Challenge is Australia's largest mental health and fitness event. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Australians take up the challenge to complete a set number of push-ups that represent the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in the most recent year of available data. The students receive daily mental health facts which correspond to statistics, raising their awareness for men’s mental health issues affecting everyday Australians, and helping them foster their own mental wellbeing and fitness.

Mrs Yasmin Relja
Two weeks ago, a group of our Year 7 and 8 students attended this year’s Brisbane Bayside Readers’ Cup where they competed with 30 other teams to attend the State Final in Brisbane in early September. Guest author, Aleesah Darlinson was our quiz master on the day. Izzy Raven, Savannah Doyle, Zara Hatcliffe, and Hayley Schworer had a fabulous time as is evident from the images below.

Lunchbox Theatre incursion: Artist in Residence
The Incursion was enjoyable, it was also a relief to get out of class. I learnt a lot of things about keeping character throughout a period of time, as well as moulding what little bit of a character you have into something more.
I enjoyed the interesting activities that our guest artist, Emma Black told us to participate in and the flexibility of most of those tasks. It definitely gave more dramatic meaning to drama in my perspective.
The different games that all included some level of drama, whether it was to create something to act out a certain character. I really enjoyed the day, and I am looking forward to doing it again next year.
