Mr Damian Bottaccio
Scholars Assembly – Friday
This Friday we will recognise the achievements and efforts of many students, as we gather to celebrate the Scholars Assembly. This is a time to celebrate their efforts and the commitment shown to their studies. Whilst invitations will be sent to students who will be announced, I invite all parents to attend the Scholars Assembly. We will recognise Academic Excellence, Merit and Diligence, as well as Attendance. In advance, I extend my congratulations to all students who will be named.
At our last Staff Meeting, I presented data from Semester 1 and acknowledged the efforts of our staff across all subjects with improving learning outcomes. This includes those who are in positions that supports learning. We were able to view the notable increase in students demonstrating progressions in their learning, with pleasing numbers performing at both A and B levels. I was also at pains to highlight the number of students who have moved from D or E results to achieving C or ‘passing’ levels. This is aligned with our implementation of strategies identified as part of our Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA), emphasising ‘Feedback’ as a way to improve learning outcomes. We have more planned for this Semester, seeking to embed students’ utilisation of feedback – now and into the future. I offer my gratitude to our staff – they are committed to our students and thank the many parents who have partnered with us in maintaining learning expectations.
Sporting Successes
Over the last school holidays we had teams compete in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball (QISSN) Carnival, Queensland independent Secondary Schools Rugby League (QISSRL) Carnival, more commonly referred to as the Confraternity Carnival, and the Gold Coast Invitational (Basketball).
Though I am immensely proud of their efforts on the court/field, it is more important to me that they demonstrate our values, both on and off the court/field. At all times we want our teams to know that they represent the College and their families. I can safely state that all students involved did live up to this expectation. Our Open Rugby League side were awarded the ‘Referees Fair Play Award’, which is an acknowledgement of this. To not give up, nor to see fault in your fellow team member, to extend sportsperson ship and respect to your opposition, and to thank those who got you to where you are, is of greater importance than winning or losing. I extend my sincere gratitude to our staff who led these teams and gave considerable time to give our students these opportunities.
This continued into the first week of this Term, where our U/13 Futsal Team came ‘Runners-Up’ in the Champion of Champions Tournament. This followed success at the SEQ Futsal earlier in the year, realising that they are now one of the strongest teams in South East Queensland. That aside, the manner with which they supported each other and followed the direction of our coach, Mr Russell, was that of a champion team.
Attendance Matters
Earlier I mentioned that we will recognise Attendance at this Friday’s Scholars Assembly. There are many students who have maintained their attendance at 98% or higher – this is a huge achievement. It should also be highlighted that we have a larger number of students who are maintaining their attendance at 90% and higher. Though we may not name them on Friday, I do want to express our great respect and admiration for their efforts.
We maintain a shared goal of 90% for all students. We have a notable number of students whose attendance is currently sitting at 85-89%. For whatever reason, the additional 1 or 2 days of absence has seen them not reach the goal. I would encourage all students to see the importance of these 1- or 2-days difference to their learning and connectedness to school.
Finally, we know that there will be times that will likely see attendance adversely impacted, referring to such things as illness or ‘misadventure’. Misadventure is a term used within the Senior Years that can refer to many things, such as anxiety, family bereavement and transport problems. These are understood and appreciated as possibly being outside of our students’ control. I do want to draw attention to non-attendance, simply because a choice is being made to not come to school. This is where I ask for the support of parents to get your children to school. Supporting the belief that such days as the Athletics Carnival aren’t important or assuming that no learning takes place in the final week of Term (it absolutely does!) can only negatively impact. As an aside, I am quite shocked by the number of times in which students call/text home, whilst at school, and arrange to leave early. How can this happen? Leaving early impacts on attendance! Let alone, why are we not being supported with the use of mobile phones. Parents, please support us and your students – I certainly thank those who do.
Staffing Changes
It is with sadness that I pass on the news that Mrs Chloe Elliot will no longer be with us. Mrs Elliot will be taking on an opportunity to teach at the Queensland Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technologies. We thank her for her contribution and wish her every success with the new adventures that await her.
I would like to welcome our newest Staff members to the FAMILY.
- Mr Andrew Ryan – Mr Ryan is our newly appointed Pastoral Leader for Oodgeroo House. He comes to us from Carmel College, Thornlands, where he has assumed several Middle Leadership roles in recent times. An experienced and capable teacher, we know that he will bring great wisdom and a genuine care for our students.
- Mr Michael Odgers – Mr Odgers comes to us from Yarrabilba State Secondary College. A very accomplished and experienced teacher of Design Technologies, we expect great things from him. Mr Odgers will seek to bring innovative ideas and guide our students who are seeking industry knowledge.
- Mr Chris Seipel – Mr Seipel will be joining us for the Semester, teaching predominantly Mathematics. He has been working with us in the capacity of relief teacher for around a year. Mr Seipel is an experienced and capable teacher who has successfully guided many students to achieve positive results in Mathematics.
- Mr Daniel Griffiths – Mr Griffiths comes to us from St Joseph’s, Coomera. He will be replacing Mrs Kaitlyn Sanders when she takes leave from us in a fortnight to welcome the newest edition to the Sanders’ family. Mr Griffiths is taking this time to get to know the classes and prepare to carry on the great learning that has been happening.
- Mr Ryan Kelly – Mr Kelly is a newly graduated teacher who will be taking ownership of most of Mrs Elliot’s classes. Mr Kelly is very familiar with schools having worked and volunteered as a Tutor and coach for various sporting teams. He has a background in Engineering and will bring this knowledge into his preferred pathway of teaching with great vigour.
- Mr Russell Thompson – Mr Thompson will be replacing Mrs Mala Nair for Term 3 whilst she takes Long Service Leave. Mr Thompson has taught in a variety of schools and held numerous leadership roles during his respected career. We are very confident that he will guide our students and their learning with a positive impact.
- Mrs Natasha Lutton – Mrs Lutton will be replacing Mrs Angela Meaney while she is on much deserved Long Service Leave. Mrs Lutton has previously taken Mrs Meaney’s classes and has worked with us on a regular basis as a relief teacher.
- Mrs Bernadette Hanley – Mrs Hanley will be replacing Mrs Catherine Nielsen while she too enjoys Long Service Leave. Mrs Hanley is a respected member of our community and will confidently lead Mrs Nielsen's classes in her absence.
- Mrs Jennifer Ashen – Mrs Ashen is a well-known and respected previous staff member. She will take on the Personal Assistant position held by Mrs Kerri Langton while she takes Long Service Leave.

Set Planning Year 10s - 2025
We are thrilled about the success of our Year 10 Set Planning last week. This program, designed to help our students make informed decisions about their future, has been an absolute success and we couldn’t be prouder of our Year 10s.
Our students have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm in exploring their interests, setting their goals, and planning their academic journey. They have truly embraced this opportunity to shape their future, demonstrating maturity and foresight beyond their years.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of last week. Their commitment to our students’ futures is truly commendable. They have provided invaluable guidance and support to our Year 10s, helping them navigate through this crucial phase of their academic journey. A special thanks to Mrs Robyn Pollock, Mrs Shannon Scott and Mr Damien Coombs who have done the bulk of these interviews with our students.
We also want to express our heartfelt thanks to all the parents who have been actively involved in this process. Your support and encouragement have been instrumental in the success of Set Planning. Your involvement in your children’s academic journey is a testament to your commitment to their future success.
The finalisation of the Year 10 Set Planning has set a strong foundation for our students’ future success. We are confident that with the continued support from our staff, parents, and community, our students will continue to excel and achieve their goals.
Once again, thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of our Year 10 Set Planning. Here’s to our students’ future success!

Mr Krijn van Gils
Enhancing Pastoral Care Lessons for Student Wellbeing
At Chisholm Catholic College, we are committed to fostering a supportive and connected community for our students. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance student wellbeing, we are refocusing our Pastoral Care (PC) lessons, held at the start of each school day. These lessons provide a unique opportunity for students to connect with their peers across all year levels and their PC teacher, who serves as a crucial point of contact for both students and parents.
New Changes to Pastoral Care Lessons
To strengthen these connections and build respectful relationships, we have introduced a significant change: students will no longer bring their laptops to PC lessons. Instead, teachers will be encouraged to incorporate engaging challenges and games that promote interaction, teamwork, and mutual respect. This shift aims to create a more dynamic and personal environment, allowing students to start their day with positive social interactions and a sense of belonging.
Importance of Student Connectedness
Student connectedness to the College is vital for their overall wellbeing and academic success. When students feel connected to their school community, they are more likely to engage positively in their studies, participate in school activities, and exhibit pro-social behaviour. This sense of belonging can significantly reduce feelings of anxiety, contributing to better mental health and emotional resilience.
Role of the PC Teacher
The PC teacher plays a pivotal role in this initiative. As the first port of call for parents and carers, the PC teacher is responsible for addressing any concerns and fostering open lines of communication. They will also be the primary contact for parents regarding prolonged absenteeism, ensuring that any underlying issues are promptly identified and addressed.
Conclusion
We believe that these changes to our Pastoral Care lessons will significantly enhance the sense of community at Chisholm Catholic College. By focusing on relationship-building activities and reinforcing the role of the PC teacher, we aim to create a supportive and connected environment where all students can thrive. We appreciate your continued support in making these initiatives a success and look forward to seeing the positive impact on our students' wellbeing.
Navigating the Digital Age: Continued Support for Safe Online Practices
In our previous newsletter, we discussed the importance of parental responsibility in managing social media use and highlighted the emerging risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). As we continue to navigate these digital landscapes, it's crucial to build upon that foundation by deepening our understanding and enhancing our strategies to support our students at Chisholm Catholic College.
Strengthening Digital Literacy
One of the most effective ways to protect our children in the digital age is through education. At Chisholm Catholic College, we are committed to enhancing digital literacy among our students. This includes not only understanding how to use technology responsibly but also recognising the potential risks and knowing how to address them. We encourage you to engage with your children in discussions about their online experiences and educate them on how to critically evaluate the content they encounter.
Enhancing Parental Involvement
- Ongoing Conversations: Keep the lines of communication open with your children. Regularly discuss their online activities and experiences. Ask questions about the apps they use, the people they interact with, and the content they view. This not only helps you stay informed but also shows your children that you care about their digital well-being.
- Utilising Parental Controls: Make use of parental controls and privacy settings on social media platforms and devices. These tools can help manage what your children see and who they interact with online, providing an additional layer of protection.
- Setting Clear Boundaries: Establish clear rules regarding social media use, including time limits and appropriate online behaviour. Ensure that your children understand the consequences of violating these rules.
Addressing AI-Generated Content
With the rise of AI technologies, it’s essential to be aware of the potential for misinformation and manipulation through AI-generated content. Deep fakes and other AI-created media can be highly realistic and deceptive. Here are some strategies to address these risks:
- Critical Thinking Skills: Teach your children to question the authenticity of the content they encounter online. Encourage them to verify information through multiple sources and to be cautious of content that seems too sensational or unlikely.
- Awareness of Deep Fakes: Educate your children about deep fakes and other AI-generated media. Explain how these technologies work and the potential harm they can cause.
- Reporting Mechanisms: Ensure your children know how to report inappropriate or suspicious content. Most social media platforms have mechanisms for reporting harassment, misinformation, and other harmful content.
Collaborative Effort
Ensuring a safe digital environment for our children requires a collaborative effort. We appreciate your continued support and partnership in this endeavour. By working together, we can help our students navigate the digital world safely and responsibly, fostering an environment where they can thrive both online and offline.
Conclusion
As we move forward, let's continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students in the digital age. By staying informed, engaged, and proactive, we can mitigate the risks associated with social media and AI technologies, ensuring a positive and secure online experience for all.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our students' safety and success.

Confraternity
During the school break, our senior rugby league team travelled to Townsville to compete in the annual Confraternity Shield. The team played admirably in defeat on the first day of the carnival, going down to the Cup champions Xavier College. On day two, the team regrouped and put in a strong defensive effort to defeat St John’s Nambour 10-6. This placed the team in the Challenge quarter final where they rematched against St John’s Nambour. Unfortunately, the team were not able to come away with the victory, however, produced a bounce back victory over Faith later that day to give the team a final placing of 6th in the division, the best finish ever at Confro by a Chisholm team. Congratulations to the team on their achievements on the field. The week was capped off with Chisholm being awarded the “Team Fair Play Award”. A massive achievement for the team and school as only one out of the 60 attending teams received the award. Credit goes to the players for their conduct on and off the field. They demonstrated maturity, leadership, camaraderie, resilience and resolve throughout the week in all their actions lead by the team Captain Kaleb Simms. During the closing ceremony, Leo Gallagher was named Chisholm’s Most Valuable Player and Lachan Edwards was presented with the Spirit of Confraternity Award. Special congratulations to these two players.

QISSN
During the school break, our senior netball team travelled to Townsville to compete in the annual QISSN tournament. Preparation for the tournament began in Term 4 of last year, with our team being selected and going on to win 4 carnivals leading up to the tournament.
We started strong at QISSN, winning 2 games and drawing 1 on the first day. On the second day, we secured a triumphant win against Sunshine Coast Grammar School, turning a halftime deficit into a 19-15 victory, but faced our first loss against the division winners, St. Margaret's.
Heading into the quarterfinals, we were in third place in our division but unfortunately lost by 2 points to Carmel College. In the semifinals, we had a close loss to St. Thomas More, falling short by just 1 point. The girls displayed commendable effort in the grand final against Chanel College, losing by only 2 points in the last minute. Their valiant efforts deserve huge congratulations.
While the on-court memories are significant, the off-court activities made the trip unforgettable. These included handball and ping pong championships, carpool karaoke, and water aerobics in the local Townsville lagoon for recovery. A special shout out to the girls for representing Chisholm with impeccable pride, sportsmanship, maturity, and resilience.
During the closing ceremony, Chisholm's Most Valuable Player award went to Kasey Brown, and our goal keeper, Tia Shaw, received the Rising Star Medallion, an honor given to only 12 players out of over 800. Thanks to Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Goldsworthy, Mr. Taylor, and Ms. Vergunst for their dedication and hard work; we couldn’t have done it without you. QISSN allowed us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses, enhance our skills both individually and as a team, build stronger connections, and form lasting friendships. As a member of this team for the last 3 years I can wholeheartedly say QISSN is my favourite schooling experience and if this is something you’re interested in pursuing I could not recommend it enough I employ you to give it a go and try out for the 2025 season next term.
Charlotte Clegg (QISSN Captain)

SEDA Football
The under 13 SEDA football boys participated in the prestigious Champion of Champions Futsal competition this week. This was the third stage of a competition in which the boys started in February. After winning all of their group games and comfortable victories in the quarter and semi finals against Helensvale and Islamic College of Brisbane, the boys went down in a close fought game in the grand final against Robina.

GCI Basketball
Over the last 4 days of school holidays, Chisholm sent both an opens team coached by myself and Greg Day, and an U15s boys’ team coached by Jordan Day to compete in the GCI basketball tournament which was held at the Coomera Indoor Stadium.
The boys would like to dedicate their performance to our much loved, Ezekiel Stuart, a fellow basketball superstar who was inspiring, and whose attitude was always positive and displayed a work ethic that was tenacious both on and off the basketball court. The boys knew what was needed to achieve success and set their minds on one goal…bring home a medal. And bring home a medal is just what we did.
Our 15 boys fought hard through every game, showed determination and never gave up until the final buzzer sounded. The tournament gave the boys an opportunity to further developed their team chemistry and provided a great experience for them having competed against Division One schools. Even though there were some tough games, the boys always kept a smile on their face and enjoyed every moment, a quality that they should all be proud of. This was an exciting competition to start the basketball tournament season with and as we build up to nationals, I am looking forward to seeing the growth in our teams over the next two terms.
Our open boys’ team had a great performance over the holidays, coming away with a 3rd place medal, achieving our goal to finish on the podium. Whilst we played against a variety of division one schools, we had a few very close losses to the teams that in the end placed above us in first and second. Although we took some tough losses, these games were important in developing our team chemistry, learning each other’s strengths and how to use those to our advantage and of course what we need to build upon as a team to improve on heading into our next tournament. Although, the boys faced some challenges, they are determined to strengthen their capabilities and strive to improve week in and week out.
Both teams showed incredible sportsmanship and support, no matter the outcome of the game. I want you to join me in congratulating the boys on their outstanding achievements and for learning never to drop their heads when times are tough, but rather encourage and support their teammates whether they are on or off the court. The boys fought a tenacious battle, and I could not be prouder of the way they competed. I am personally excited to see what the open boys are able to achieve throughout this year’s tournament season and I encourage you all to get behind our teams and if you have the opportunity, come and see your teams in action on the courts.

Zara and Byron:
Over the school holidays, both Byron and Zara flew up to Cairns to compete in the U14s basketball state championships for our local club, Logan Thunder. I want to give both of them a huge congratulations on their success. Zara's girls team took out Gold and made it through to Nationals. Unfortunately, Byron and the boys team lost their bronze medal match, finishing 4th, but still secured a place to Nationals. Both teams will travel to Victoria in the September school holidays to compete. We wish them the best of luck over their training and will be keeping track on their progress as we get closer to the tournament.

Chookas!
We wish Lunchbox Theatre students all the best as they attend the Queensland Theatre’s Scene Project this Friday 19th July.
Each year Queensland Theatre commissions a playwright to pen a new work. Participating drama students are tasked with the challenge of creating their own unique 15-minute version of the play. It’s an immersive and participatory initiative that invites schools to dive headfirst into the exhilarating process of performance. From the first rehearsal to the final curtain call, students and teachers are recognized and celebrated as artists, bringing their unique visions to life on stage.
Look out for an update in future newsletter for an update on this!
