    Mr Damian Bottaccio

    Catholic Education Week

Last week, we recognised ‘Catholic Education Week’. This week provides an annual opportunity for all Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. The theme for 2024 is ‘Communities of Faith, Hope & Love’. This comes from a verse in Corinthians 13:13 - "Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love."

This was a time for us to acknowledge our Catholic identity embedded in the Gospel of Jesus, and our Catholic/Christian heritage that spans over 150 years in Australia. At Chisholm Catholic College, we celebrated with a variety of events. It commenced with the ‘Vinnie’s Sleepout’, which was hosted at St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School – a combined event that saw our students and staff working alongside students, parents and staff from St Matthew’s. An amazing event and a great example of our students leading by example.

On Tuesday, 8th August, we celebrate Mary MacKillop, St Mary of the Cross, Australia’s first Saint. She is the Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of Brisbane and is also one of our House Patrons. She is the co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph and she founded many schools across Australia to provide an education to the poor and those in most need. She led a life of great courage and trust in God. One of her famous quotes is, "Never see a need without doing something about it". This aligns with our motto of Live Christ’s Challenge and the immense work of Caroline Chisholm – our College’s namesake.

A Catholic school/college is more than just a school. It is a connected community that welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds with the unified belief of creating a better tomorrow. At a Catholic school, we take a holistic view of teaching the whole student.

    Our Partnership

In a few weeks' time we have arranged a Parent Engagement Evening, which will be facilitated by Dr Justin Coulson. The focus is on supporting parents. As a parent, I understand the challenges that can arise with raising young people – particularly when they enter the teen years and are seeking to develop their independence and own sense of self. Parenting does not come with any training. We use the resources we experienced, as well as the example of others around us to navigate and enhance our toolkit.

Dr Coulson is widely regarded for his work with families. He talks from his own experiences, as well as that of many years of working alongside parents and research on families. It is too good of an opportunity to pass up! Please refer to Mr van Gil’s article for specific details.

    God bless!

    Deputy Principal's News

    Mr Alexander Hodgson

On Friday 19 July we were able to present our Attendance and Scholar’s Awards for Semester One.  It was very gratifying to see the large turnout of parents and families to support and recognise the excellent effort on many students in Semester One.  Students received awards for Attendance, Academic Diligence, Academic Merit and Academic Excellence.  It was very pleasing to see the number of award recipients and the acknowledgement that they received from the community for their efforts in Semester One.

Students will also have the opportunity to be awarded Diligence, Academic Merit and Academic Excellence Awards on our Awards Evening in November and we look forward to seeing a large number of students and families on this night.  I would like to encourage all of the award winners to maintain their high level of effort as well as encouraging all students to strive to do their best in Semester Two.

    NAIDOC Week Celebration

In our first week of school, we welcomed our community into the College for our annual NAIDOC celebration.  The theme for 2024 was Keep the Fire Burning: Blak, loud and proud, and it was a great pleasure to hear Uncle Ted Williams, Yugambeh Elder and Nicole Watego, Quandamooka Woman share their stories. We also welcomed the families of the St Matthew’s Primary School Yaama group, and distinguished guests from BCE Head Office. Thank you to Aunty Christine, Jo-Anne Ibell, Uncle Ted, Nicole, Tim Lomas (APRE St. Matthews Primary School) and all those who joined us in for a wonderful afternoon celebrating culture.

    St. Vincent De Paul Sleepout

On Monday last week, a dedicated group of volunteer Chisholm students had the pleasure of supporting St. Matthew’s Primary school at their annual Soup Kitchen. Our students assisted the Year 5 and 6s as they engaged in the poverty game, suitcase game and tent simulation game, all designed to raise awareness and understanding of the experience of homelessness. Our students led a beautiful prayer to close the evening and were excellent mentors to the primary school students. Thank you to St. Matthew’s for having us, Mrs Ibell and Mr Bottaccio for their support and to our wonderful student volunteers.

Catholic Education Week – Communities of Faith, Hope and Love.

    A Message to Year 12

The end is in sight. Now is the time to be steady.  It can feel overwhelming this time of year with assessments and exams. We all need to make sure that we have our end goals in mind.

How do you want to finish your 13 years of schooling? What legacy do you leave behind?

We firmly believe that school is more than just the academic outcomes, it is the wholistic education of the whole person. We hope that you are people of Faith and Mercy. Willing to help others in need and support where you see struggle. We hope that you leave here as young men and women of Ambition. Striving to always be your best version of yourself with all people, at all times. We hope that you are individuals with Integrity. When you give your word, you follow through. You are intentional and are accountable. We hope that you are instilled with a sense of Love and Commitment. You see your education as a lifelong journey and that you are learners for life.

Finish well.  Be the best version of yourself.

    Vocational Education and Traineeships News

    Mrs Robyn Pollock

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” ―Eleanor Roosevelt

Last week our Year 10 students visited the Ignite Careers Expo at the Logan Entertainment Centre.  It was a great opportunity to find inspiration for potential careers, speak to industry professionals, participate in hands-on activities, and learn about the various pathways to reach their dream career.  Their enthusiasm and engagement in this valuable experience was evident throughout the morning, with many questions being asked and lots of resources being collected.

For those who are undecided about what their future may hold, the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training have put together the 2024 School Leavers' Guide to jobs and training - Career options and information. It provides information and resources to school leavers, senior students, and parents. Vocational education and training (VET) can provide you with strong pathways to your desired career/job, give you skills employers value and may also be an excellent pathway into higher education including university. The Guide contains resources to assist you in considering how VET can help you to reach your career goals. In the Guide you will find information on:

    • Tools and resources to explore career options
    • Vocational training and further study
    • Subsidised training and incentives
    • Industry specific career exploration
    • Assistance with finding a job
    • Mental and physical wellbeing support for young people

Often in the VET office, we receive enquiries relating to school-based apprenticeships and traineeships. So, what is a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship?

School-based apprentices and trainees, usually in Years 10, 11 and 12, are trained in their chosen apprenticeship or traineeship, in the workplace and through a training organization, while continuing to study towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at school. To commence a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT), a student must have the support of the employer, the school, a supervising registered training organisation and their parent/guardian. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training have put together a fact sheet which tells you about:

    • Advantages of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships
      • More flexibility and variety
      • Head start in a career
      • Nationally recognised qualifications
      • An opportunity to learn and earn
      • Contribution to the community
      • Employer satisfaction
    • How SATs work
      • School/finishing school
      • Work
      • Training

Click here to find out more about SATs and whether they are an option for you, or pop in and speak to us in the VET office.
