Progress – Our Annual Goals and Explicit Improvement Agenda
Aligned with the recent Scholars Assembly, we use the Semester 1 juncture to review our progress against the College’s Annual Goals and Explicit Improvement Agenda. All of our goals are situated to improve learning and teaching. The presence of a Catholic Identity goals seeks to affirm our tradition and values, a point of difference in comparison to other schools.
Our Catholic Identity Goal is focused on prayer; a key aspect of our tradition. Like any organisation, it arose out of a review of our current situation and to be considered in determining where we want to be. We would like to believe that anyone who joins our community would be respectful of our traditions and be involved. However, we also need to be adaptable in how these traditions are enlivened. Engaging young people is at the heart of this, seeking to meet them where they are at and connect with them as much as possible. We are doing this and will continue to ‘dialogue’ with our students and the adults in our community.
Our Wellbeing Goals is focused on ‘connection’ and ‘respectful relationships’. There has been much done in this regard. Most of the planning has been around our processes and procedures, how we engage with our students. When a student feels that they belong, their overall engagement with school and learning will improve. Currently, we are focusing on the importance of ‘Pastoral Care’. This is a time where we actively seek to form connections. How might you help as a parent – get them to school on time.
Our Explicit Improvement Agenda, our Learning and Teaching Goal, has emphasised the immense impact of ‘Feedback’. The first part of the year has been supporting our staff in developing and sharing strategies that engage students in feedback on their learning. The results from Semester 1, comparing to the same time last year, demonstrates the outcomes that can be achieved, ie. notable improvements in learning. We are not finished though, as tonight staff engage in a Twilight and tomorrow a Collaborative Planning Day, seeking to have students engage with the feedback and utilise it. It is this continued emphasis on pedagogy that will see our student results improve.

Attendance
It may seem somewhat contrary to be highlighting the importance of attendance when there are many within the community who are struggling with illness. Illness is a genuine reason for not attending school and we acknowledge the need for a full recovery – students and adults alike.
Our emphasis on attendance is more to do with challenging reasons that are within control. The infograph below seeks to highlight how non-attendance can become a habit, and ultimately interfere with learning.
We want students at school. Every day. Parents, please support us and your child in being at school. Further, if they do need to be away, please let us know the reason – we are required to know this information for all students. The latest version of the BCE Connect App makes this a much simpler task.
God bless!

Social Media Concerns - TikTok Smash or Pass
In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, new trends and challenges constantly emerge, capturing the attention of young people worldwide. One such trend currently gaining traction on TikTok is the "Smash or Pass" challenge. While seemingly harmless on the surface, this trend raises significant concerns for the well-being of our students and the broader school community.
The "Smash or Pass" challenge involves individuals posting videos where they rate others—often their peers—based on physical appearance or perceived attractiveness. Participants are encouraged to either "smash" (indicating approval) or "pass" (indicating disapproval). This trend, while popular among teenagers, is deeply problematic, promoting a culture of superficiality, objectification, and, ultimately, hurtful behaviour.
The Impact on Young Minds
For adolescents, who are already navigating the complexities of self-identity, peer relationships, and self-esteem, the "Smash or Pass" trend can be particularly damaging. Being publicly rated based on appearance can lead to feelings of inadequacy, shame, and humiliation, which may have lasting effects on a young person's mental health. Additionally, this trend perpetuates the idea that a person's worth is tied to their physical appearance, a notion that is both unhealthy and misleading.
The Role of Social Media in Amplifying Harm
At Chisholm Catholic College, we have long held concerns about the role of social media in the lives of our students. The difficulties schools face in dealing with social media fallouts—such as cyberbullying, exclusion, and the spread of harmful content—are well-documented. Fortunately, Chisholm Catholic College has not been identified as a school where students are participating in the "Smash or Pass" trend. However, we must remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any emerging challenges that social media may present.
A Call to Action: Limiting Social Media Access
Given the potential for harm, we reiterate our strong recommendation that students under the age of 16 should not have access to social media. The online environment can be a difficult and dangerous place for young minds to navigate, and the presence of trends like "Smash or Pass" only underscores the need for caution. We encourage parents and guardians to closely monitor and guide their children's online activities, ensuring that they are engaging in safe and positive ways.
Supporting Our Students
As a community, we must come together to protect the well-being of our students. This involves not only setting boundaries around social media use but also fostering an environment where kindness, respect, and empathy are valued above all else. At Chisholm Catholic College, we are committed to educating our students about the responsible use of technology and the importance of treating others with dignity, both online and offline.

Year 9 Camp: Adventure and Connection
Last week, our Year 9 students embarked on a memorable three-day adventure at Total Adventures camp near Gympie. Accompanied by 10 dedicated staff members, the students eagerly left behind their daily routines to immerse themselves in the challenges and joys of camp life.
Upon arrival, they were greeted with a hearty camp lunch, setting the tone for the days ahead. Activities were organized in House groups, encouraging students to step beyond their usual friend circles and fostering a sense of unity. This structure allowed them to forge new friendships and strengthen existing bonds within their Houses.
The range of activities was both diverse and exhilarating. From the adrenaline-pumping mountain biking trails to the strategic teamwork required for river crossing, each activity presented its own set of challenges. Abseiling tested their courage, while navigation and survival skills honed their problem-solving abilities. Archery sessions provided a fun platform for students to practice focus and precision.
Sleeping in tents added an authentic touch to the camping experience, especially as the nights turned chilly. However, the warmth of the evening campfires became a hub of camaraderie. Gathered around the flickering flames, students shared stories, laughter, and reflections, creating lasting memories under the star-lit sky.
Throughout the camp, students not only developed new skills but also grew personally. Stepping out of their comfort zones, they discovered strengths they hadn't realised before and supported one another through various challenges. The environment fostered resilience, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for nature.
As the camp drew to a close, it was evident that the experience had left an indelible mark. Students returned with heightened confidence, stronger friendships, and a treasure trove of stories to share. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the staff members whose guidance and support made this unforgettable journey possible.

“Just because my path is different, doesn’t mean I am lost”. Gerard Abrams.
When it comes to building a career, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. For teenagers thinking about their future, it’s important to know that there are many different paths to the same goal. Whether it’s going straight to tertiary education, taking a gap year, starting an apprenticeship, or diving into work right away, each path can lead to success in its own way. The key is to explore your options, follow your interests, and stay open to opportunities.
TAFE at school applications for 2025 are currently open.
With a vast range of study options available, and the ability to start in year 11, or 12, it is understandable why this is popular pathway for many of our students. Have a look over the course guides below to see what’s available and apply online. Visit the VET office for more information.

MacKillop House Triumphs at Annual Athletics Carnival
A Celebration of Participation, Teamwork, and Fun
The recent Athletics Carnival was a day filled with excitement, camaraderie, and sporting spirit, as students, teachers, and families came together to celebrate our school's rich tradition of athletic excellence. This year, MacKillop House emerged victorious, demonstrating outstanding participation, teamwork, and sheer enthusiasm that set them apart. But beyond the competition, the event was a testament to the vibrant community spirit that defines our school.
From the crack of dawn, the school grounds buzzed with anticipation. Students from all houses—MacKillop, Flynn, Namatjira, Mitchell, Oodgeroo and Parer—arrived in their respective house colours, ready to give their best.
Participation and Teamwork: The Heart of the Carnival
MacKillop House's success can be attributed to the incredible level of participation and teamwork displayed by its members. Every student, from the youngest to the oldest, contributed to the house's overall score. Whether it was the 100m sprints, long jumps, or relay races, MacKillop athletes showed determination and a commitment to supporting one another. Their collaborative spirit was evident as they cheered on their teammates, offering words of encouragement and celebrating each other's achievements.
I would like to highlight the following students for achieving Age Champion/Running Up for MacKillop House: Daisy Gemzik (M7), Kamilla Nagy (M7), Isla Walshe (M3), Archie Miller (M4), Jesse Foster (M3), Gabby Foster (M6), Maia Arnold (M5), Sienna Walshe (M7), Jackson Helmore (M6), Erin Mayes (M4) and Rory Lloyd (M2).
A Mix of Traditional and Fun Events
While traditional athletics events like sprints, high jumps, and shot put were the main attractions, this year's carnival also featured a variety of fun activities that added an extra layer of excitement. The inclusion of capture the flag was a standout, bringing a playful yet competitive edge to the day. Students dashed across the field, strategizing and working together to outsmart the opposing houses, all while having an absolute blast.
Celebrating Sportsmanship and Competitiveness
While MacKillop House celebrated their well-deserved victory, it is essential to acknowledge the incredible efforts of the other houses. Thank you to Flynn, Mitchell, Namatjira, Oodgeroo and Parer for their remarkable sportsmanship and competitiveness throughout the day. Their determination and resilience were inspiring, making the competition fierce and enjoyable.
Every house had its moments of glory, whether it was a record-breaking sprint or an impressive long jump. The level of skill and spirit displayed by all participants was a testament to the dedication and hard work put in by students and coaches alike.
A Day to Remember
The Athletics Carnival was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of our school's values and the strong sense of community that binds us together. The smiles, high-fives, and shared experiences made it a memorable day for everyone involved.
Congratulations to MacKillop House for their outstanding performance and victory. Your participation, teamwork, and spirit have set a high standard for future carnivals. A massive thank you to House Captains Makaylee Howarth (M1) and Taylah Gordon (M3) for your support and leadership throughout the day. To all the houses, thank you for your enthusiasm and for making the day a success. Let’s carry forward the energy and excitement from this event into our daily lives, continuing to support and uplift each other in all our endeavours.
Here’s to more such fun-filled, spirited events that bring our school community closer and foster a lifelong love for sports and teamwork!

Celebrating Young Readers: The Readers Cup Competition
The Queensland Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) proudly hosts the Readers’ Cup, an exciting state-wide competition designed to ignite a passion for reading among young students. Since its inception in 2004, this event has become a hallmark of literary enthusiasm and collaborative effort, offering an engaging platform for students to showcase their love for books.
The Readers’ Cup invites teams of four to five students to immerse themselves in a curated selection of books. These teams then face off in a spirited quiz competition, answering questions derived from their readings.
The Readers’ Cup is more than just a quiz—it is a celebration of teamwork, intellectual growth, and a shared love for literature. Students from different schools come together, united by their passion for reading, to compete at both regional and state levels. The competition not only challenges students to read widely and think critically but also provides them with the unique opportunity to meet like-minded peers who share their enthusiasm for books.
By participating in the Readers’ Cup, students experience the thrill of competition akin to sporting events, but with a literary twist. This event not only fosters a love of reading but also develops skills in teamwork, comprehension, and critical thinking, all while building a supportive community of young readers.
As the competition continues to grow and evolve, it remains a testament to the enduring power of books and the joy of reading. We look forward to another year of inspiring young minds and celebrating the achievements of Queensland’s budding literary talents.
On the 25th of July, we cheered on these exceptional young readers, Bonnie Clark, Prithiga Balachandran, Aisha Hamed Shaker, Abigail Broquesa and Vinya Eda as they embarked on their literary journey in the Readers Cup!
