    Mr Damian Bottaccio

Congratulations to the Cast and Crew of "The Wiz"

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the remarkable staff and students who brought the magical world of “The Wiz” to life! This year’s production was nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing the immense talent, dedication, and creativity of everyone involved.

Our students delivered unforgettable performances, embodying their characters with enthusiasm and skill. Their hard work, long rehearsals, and unwavering commitment truly paid off. Special thanks to Miss Anthea Jones and Mrs Pam Picart for their leadership of “The Wiz” – they were able to bring together the many elements that goes into a production of this magnitude. I also extend my gratitude to staff and students who assisted by taking on the varied responsibilities needed to bring this performance to stage – their combined efforts were instrumental in shaping this spectacular show.

Equally deserving of recognition are the behind-the-scenes champions —our technical crew, set designers, and costume makers. Their meticulous work and creative designs created a visually stunning and immersive experience, complementing the fantastic performances on stage.

The success of “The Wiz” is a testament to the many talented people we have in our College FAMILY. We are incredibly proud of all who contributed to this production and look forward to celebrating many more achievements in the future. Congratulations!

Media and Student Materials Consent Policy Update – Reminder

We are committed to responsibly managing and protecting the privacy of our students. As part of this commitment, Brisbane Catholic Education has updated its media consent policies and introduced a simple opt-in or opt-out process to give you control over how we use your children’s images. The new media consent now covers materials created by students during the course of their enrolment.

Under the new policy, only the photos of students who have opted for the 'public' consent option will be used in our school communications. This includes school publications, newsletters, and social media platforms. We understand the importance of this matter and assure you that the distribution of photos will be handled with the utmost care and respect for your preferences.

A Parent Slip with updated Media Consent was sent last week. We are asking that the Slip be completed by Friday, 6th September.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we make these important changes.

    Attendance and Academic Success

Regular attendance is more than just a requirement—it’s vital for academic achievement. Research underscores the strong link between consistent attendance and higher academic performance. A comprehensive study by the National Centre for Education Statistics (NCES) indicates that students with higher attendance rates generally achieve better grades and test scores (NCES, 2023). For example, a recent study in Educational Psychology found that students maintaining 90% attendance scored, on average, 15% higher on assessments compared to those with more frequent absences (Smith et al., 2023).

Moreover, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) highlights that frequent absences contribute to significant gaps in learning, which can accumulate and negatively affect overall performance (IES, 2024). These gaps can hinder a student's ability to grasp and retain important concepts, ultimately impacting their academic trajectory.

Regular attendance not only ensures continuous engagement with learning but also fosters better relationships with peers and teachers, enhancing the overall schooling experience. This is why it is important that we prioritise attendance – we want to students to perform well and feel that they belong.

    God bless!

    Phasing out Chisholm Plus+

With the advent of the Learning Dashboard and the decreasing functionality of Chisholm Plus+, it had been our intention to phase out the use Chisholm Plus+ by the end of this year. Unfortunately, we have been experiencing some unexpected technical difficulties with Chisholm Plus+ and we are no longer able to use Chisholm Plus as a progressive reporting system for students. We are also no longer able to provide the Approaches to Learning Updates for parents from the Chisholm Plus+ platform.

The Term 3 Progress Report which will be published on 8 October will contain the student’s results for Term 3 along with an Approaches to Learning Update. The Semester 2 report at the end of the year will also contain an Approaches to Learning Update.

The Learning Dashboard will continue to evolve, and we anticipate that it will provide a progressive reporting option next year. The Learning Dashboard provides great access to student data for teachers, students and parents and we look forward to working with this program as it evolves. Reporting information for students will remain accessible in The Learning Dashboard which has its own separate tile on the Parent Portal.

    Road Safety Week

This week is Road Safety Week in Qld. The initiative, running from 26-30 August, will see police working towards driving down the number of lives impacted by crashes on our roads. This is a good time to remind everyone to be safe on our roads and carpark. It is important for students and adults to use the designated crossings, for parents/carers to only pick up students from the pick-up zone and for everyone to obey the speed limit in our carpark.

Also, as part of Road Safety week we are celebrating 40 Years of School Crossing Supervisors. We would like to recognise Lynda Love and Mercia Brock for the excellent job that they do in keeping our students safe at the crossing on California Creek Road in the mornings and afternoons.

Liturgy - Oodgeroo and Namatjira House

Over the past two weeks, Oodgeroo and Namatjira Houses have gathered to deepen their connection to their house patron through liturgy. Our six house patrons are examples of how to use our God-given gifts for the betterment of the community, guiding us to Live Christ’s Challenge through values such as faith, ambition, integrity, commitment, love and mercy.  Thank you to all those students and staff who gathered for our liturgy, and who used their gifts to help create two meaningful celebrations.

    First Nations Artwork

You may have noticed our new college staff polo with the College First Nations print.  With the inverse colour pattern to the students, who wear the green, the artwork, Journey to Belonging, tells the story of our land, a place we come together on sacred country to share learning and grow as a community. Please see below the artist statement:

    Prayer for Reconciliation

    God of all creation,

as we journey together in this Great Southern Land,

we pray for healing, forgiveness and unity,

creating a path of good will, with justice and compassion.

Jesus, through the power of your love, you have given us the courage, wisdom and strength to share our gifts and talents in humility.

In peace and understanding we reconcile with each other.

Creator Spirit, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving for the many blessings we have received. Allow your Spirit to wash over us and give us strength to walk together as one.

    Study Fit for Year 12

Year 12 students are on the countdown for their end of schooling exams.  At this point in the school year, students may start to wind down and take their foot off the pedal and feel like their school careers are finished.  Rest assured they are not.  All students on an ATAR pathway will have external exams in Term 4 and Applied subjects still have at least one piece of assessment to go.  In Year 12, all subjects are paired subjects meaning that to be successful across the year – ALL assessment matters. Non-submit of even 1 assignment means that they will no longer get their credits for that subject's coursework.  So please encourage your young adult to finish the year strong!

    External Exam Preparation

It is important that students take the time every day to revise effectively for their external exams.  Different subjects will require different methods as the requirements may vary.  For example, it is expected that in English students will be able to critically analyse the play ‘Macbeth’ and write an extended essay.  For revision in English, it will be necessary for students to thoroughly understand the play, remember key quotes that link specifically to themes and write 800 to 1000 words critically around an unseen question.  Strategies for this style of exam include practice of many different exam questions, breaking down the question and creating skeleton plans, memorisation of key quotes and mind-mapping of themes and characters.  In comparison, in General Maths students will be examined on a years’ worth of content.  As such, students should have a separate revision book for this subject with clearly defined headings and worked examples.  Students should also practice with their calculators’ settings in order to understand how to use these under exam stress.  It is also important that students are constantly revisiting and reviewing these books as part of the exam preparation.

The QCAA has published the external exam timetable for 2024.  Students can access this here:

    QCAA external assessment timetable 2024

For more information on external assessment please use this website for more information.

    Exam Tip #1

On the topic of exam performance and preparation, a skill that is important to develop in students is the ability to mind map.  This skill draws on the key cognition of synthesis – which is the ability to effectively combine and summarise key ideas.  A good mind map uses visual cues, words, images and colours to differentiate and distinguish between the ideas.  Why is it beneficial for students?  Research shows that this critical thinking skill encourages the brain to make associations and stimulates memory.  It helps students plan and organise ideas, chunk information to help memory, encourages creativity and engages students more meaningfully in their learning.

    Subject Selection - Year 9 into 10

Later in the week students in Year 9 will have the opportunity to select their Year 10 subjects. At Chisholm we follow the Australian Curriculum until the end of Year 10.  The Australian Curriculum best prepares students for the rigours of Senior.  We also acknowledge that choice is a strong motivator for students and that students whom select subjects they do well in and enjoy, are more likely to achieve higher academic outcomes.  For these reasons, we have structured some of our CORE learning areas from the Australian Curriculum to give students elements of choice.  Students must complete Religion, English, HPE and Maths as a CORE learning.  The Australian Curriculum also details that History and Science are CORE.  Next year, we are giving students options in the History and Science CORE by offering different strands.  Students will need to select a minimum of 1 Science strand and 1 History (Humanities) strand.  There will be more detail in an email communication home on these options.

Breaking Point: A Parent Engagement Evening with Dr. Justin Coulson

On Tuesday last week, Chisholm Catholic College hosted a significant parent engagement evening, welcoming Dr. Justin Coulson, a renowned expert in youth mental health. The event drew an impressive turnout of 110 parents and staff members, all eager to delve into the pressing issue of the current youth mental health crisis. Dr. Coulson's presentation, aptly titled "Breaking Point," provided invaluable insights into the challenges our young people face today.

Throughout his talk, Dr. Coulson explored several critical topics that are shaping the mental health landscape for our youth:

    • Tech and social media: Dr. Coulson discussed the pervasive influence of technology and social media on young minds. While these tools offer incredible benefits, they also present risks, particularly when it comes to mental well-being. He highlighted the importance of balanced screen time and the need for digital literacy to help our youth navigate the online world safely.
    • Anxiety and Bullying: The increasing rates of anxiety among young people were a focal point of the presentation. Dr. Coulson emphasized the role that bullying, both online and offline, plays in exacerbating anxiety. He called for a collective effort from parents, educators, and the community to address these issues head-on.
    • Connection and Belonging: A sense of connection and belonging is crucial for the mental health of young people. Dr. Coulson stressed the importance of fostering environments where students feel valued and connected, both at school and home. Building strong relationships and a supportive community can act as a buffer against mental health struggles.
    • Risky Play and Problem Solving: Interestingly, Dr. Coulson also touched on the concept of "risky play," which involves encouraging children to take risks in a controlled environment. This type of play can enhance problem-solving skills, resilience, and overall mental well-being. He argued that while it's natural for parents to want to shield their children from harm, it's also essential to allow them the freedom to explore and learn from their experiences.

The evening concluded with a Q&A session, where parents and staff had the opportunity to engage directly with Dr. Coulson, asking questions and sharing their concerns. The event was a resounding success, leaving attendees with a deeper understanding of the mental health challenges facing today's youth and practical strategies to support their children.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Justin Coulson for his enlightening presentation and to all the parents and staff who participated in this important discussion. Together, we can make a positive impact on the mental well-being of our young people.

Celebrating the Magic of The Wiz

This past weekend, over 70 students and staff transported the Chisholm community to the magical land of Oz with our incredible production of The Wiz! From the moment the curtains rose to the final bow, our talented students captivated the audience with their remarkable performances, bringing this classic story to life with energy, heart, and undeniable talent. The Wiz took place at Chandler Theatre and cast, and crew performed to over 700 audience members over 3 fantastic shows!

A Standing Ovation for Our Cast

Our students truly shone on stage, each bringing their characters to life with enthusiasm and skill. Olivia Fitzgerald (Year 12), in the role of Dorothy, led us on a heartfelt journey with her compelling acting and emotional depth. Ava Linney (Year12), as Adderperle brought mischief and sass to the stage, while Mayah Ryan (Year 9) made the audience cower with her fearsome portrayal of Evillene. Ulani Mano-Tootoo and Isabella Beissel (both Year 7), as Glinda, enchanted the audience with their grace and uplifting presence, while Savannah Doyle (Year 8) commanded the stage as the Wiz, delivering a performance full of charisma and flair.

The Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion, portrayed by Ruby Richter (Year 8), Gee McGoldrick (Year 12) and Ella Marshall (Year 12) respectively, were a dynamic trio, balancing humour and vulnerability in their quest for brains, a heart, and courage. The ensemble cast, featuring our amazing Pit Singers and dancers, added vibrancy and energy to every scene, creating a rich and immersive experience for all who attended. Our amazing behind the scenes tech and production crew worked tirelessly to bring the world of Oz to life. Of course, the musical wouldn’t have been a success without the fantastic work from our band: Brady Gowlett (Year 12), Rohan Barraclough (Year 11), Zara Hatcliffe (Year 8), Sophie Lock (Year 9), Riley Rossman (Year 12), and Blake Burgess (Year 12)

    Mrs Robyn Pollock

“The only source of knowledge is experience”. Albert Einstein

Voluntary work experience offers immense value by providing students with the opportunity to develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience. It is a great option for students to try out a career before signing on for a school-based traineeship, or before committing to a university degree. Additionally, work experience helps to expand professional networks and enhance resumes, making candidates more attractive to future employers.

Over the last school holidays, Gurleen Sethi in year 10, spent some time with Logan City Councillor Miriam Stemp from Division 10, in the office to learn what it is like to be a Councillor, how Council operates and better understand the responsibilities of the different levels of government. Gurleen met with other Councillors, the Mayor, and Council staff to discuss various topics, attending regular Council meetings, and visiting local community organisations and parks.

Cr Miriam Stemp believes the work experience model is very important, and this is something she would like to see more businesses offer to students in our local schools.

We would also like to congratulate Ava Linney on completing her Certificate III Health Services traineeship with the Logan Hospital. Ava had the opportunity to put her theory into practice by working with nursing staff at the hospital one day per week, where we are sure she was a favourite of the patients.

The Touch Football Excellence Program has had an incredible start to the Semester 2 season, and we’re thrilled to share some fantastic updates.

Our U18 girls’ team has continued their winning streak by claiming the 2024 SECA Opens Touch tournament title for the second consecutive year. They dominated the competition with impressive performances, finishing each game with over five tries scored and conceding only 1 try across the entire competition. Their unbeaten run earnt them a spot at the South Queensland All school's tournament on the Gold Coast, a prize secured through their victory at Logan Schools Cup. The girls took out the first day at South Queensland All schools undefeated but unfortunately went down 5-1 to Palm Beach Currumbin, the eventual grand final winners.

In addition to our U18 girls' triumph, our other touch teams also showcased their skills at SECA, securing 2nd and 3rd places with a mix of convincing wins and narrow losses. Our growth and improvement are evident, and we hope our competitors take note—we’re aiming to make a formidable impact in 2025.

We invite everyone to come out and support our teams at the Brisbane All Schools tournament on the weekend of September 14th and 15th. Your support means a lot to our players as they strive for excellence.

A special congratulations to our players who were recognized as Most Valuable Players at SECA and South Queensland All Schools:

    U13 Girls- Ayla Pomana

    U13 Boys- Tommy Wilson

    U15 Girls- Grace Harvey

    U15 Boys- Kalem Richards

U18 Girls- Madi Van der Loos (SECA) & Haylee J Wolter (SQ All schools)

    U18 Boys- Dylan Gilby

Their outstanding performances were crucial to our success. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the games!

    Looking Ahead!

As we celebrate these achievements, it is important to remember that success in sport is not just measured by victories, but also by the values of teamwork, perseverance, and respect that our students demonstrate both on and off the field. Our athletes have shown great sportsmanship throughout the season, and this is something we should all be proud of.

Thank you to all the students, coaches, parents, and supporters who have contributed to a successful Term 3. We look forward to continuing this momentum into the next term, as we strive to build on our successes and foster a culture of excellence in sport at Chisholm Catholic College.

Coming events that round out Term 3 include September holiday commitment, and the beginning of Term 4 include:

    • Final QFSL matches,
    • Gold Coast Titans/Qld All Schools Touch Football Pre-Tournament fixtures,
    • Kings College Touch Football Tournament,

    Book Week

Wow! Book Week has been an amazing success. Each morning in PC the students were provided with a Wordle to unjumble, sent via email. The week began with a treasure hunt and continued into Tuesday with Book Trivia during lunch run by our very own Miss Brimson. Throughout the week students entered the colouring competition as well as sending in photos of their pets caught reading – yes, pets enjoy reading too! Wednesday surpassed all our expectations with students and staff taking advantage to promote their favourite characters. On Thursday they tried their hand at Book Pong. Yes, you heard correctly. However, the prizes consisted of Hampton Café vouchers, not the traditional beverage. Friday completed the week with a junior and senior escape room in the library. The winners and prizes will be announced soon. We hope you enjoy the photos.

Rock Band claims Gold at QCMF

On Friday the 16th, our senior Rock Band, consisting of Brady Gowlett, Gee McGoldrick, Riley Rossman, Ava Linney, Rohan Barraclough, Courtney Tuson, Leilani Dobbins, and Samantha Densmore competed at the Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF). The air was thick with anticipation as our Senior Rock Band stepped onto the stage at the Villanova College Quadrangle. The journey to this moment had been anything but easy—weeks of intense lunch time practices and at-home rehearsals had led up to this performance. Nerves were high, but so was their determination. Competing in the contemporary band section, they channeled all that hard work and emotion into an electrifying performance that earned them a well-deserved Gold. Excellence Awards were taken home by Gee McGoldrick (Bass) and Ava Linney (Vocals), whose relentless dedication to their craft shone through capturing the respect and awe of the crowd and attention of the judges. The applause was deafening, but the pride in their achievements was even louder. They didn’t just meet expectations; they surpassed them. Please join us in celebrating our talented and dedicated students in their success.

We are proud of you. Chis Culture is proud of you. Chisholm is proud of you.

Coming off the back of the success of QCMF and the success of The Wiz, the Chisholm Senior Rock Band’s next event: The Battle Of The Rock Bands.

Ginger Biscuit will be competing against schools from all around Queensland at Clairvaux MacKillop College.

The event is held on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in Week One of Term 4.
