Navigating the Final Week of Term: Strategies for Success
We come to the end of Term 3; the final week of the term before us. It has been another incredibly busy 10-weeks at the College, noting the many opportunities presented to our students to demonstrate their talents and abilities. We recognise the tremendous support of our staff and those in our community who have contributed to this, let alone the commitment and enthusiasm shown by our students. I thank all those who have contributed!
The final week is not the time to take the foot off the accelerator. We all need to work tough through to the end of the week. Both our students and teachers alike face the challenge of finishing strong while managing the stressors that arise. This period is crucial for wrapping up coursework, finalising exams and ensuring that all academic goals are met. In some cases, we will commence new learning so that we can commence Term 4 with confidence.
Here are some effective strategies to help navigate this time.
- Prioritize and Organize: Start by creating a clear plan. List out remaining tasks, deadlines, and exam dates. Breaking down your workload into manageable chunks can make the final stretch feel less overwhelming.
- Stay Focused: Avoid distractions by setting specific, achievable goals for each day. Use techniques like the Pomodoro method to maintain concentration and productivity, ie. focused chunks of time for a given task, followed by a break. Remember the importance of taking regular breaks to recharge.
- Self-Care is Key: Stress management is vital. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking time for relaxation. Simple activities like a short walk or mindfulness exercises can help maintain balance.
- Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers or peers if you need help or clarification. Collaborative study sessions can be incredibly beneficial during this period.
Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). (2022). “Effective strategies for managing end-of-term stress.”Retrieved from [ACER website].
By staying organized, focused and balanced, we can navigate the final week of the term with confidence and resilience. Finish strong and look forward to a well-deserved break!
Father’s Day
A belated Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible fathers, grandfathers and male role models out there. I hope that your day was filled with the love and appreciation you deserve from your children.
The Vital Connection Between School Attendance and Student Wellbeing
This Thursday we recognise R U OK Day! It is timely then to consider the connection between school attendance and student wellbeing. Studies reveal that regular attendance is closely linked to improved mental health, social skills, and academic outcomes. According to a 2021 report by the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY), students who attend school regularly are more likely to develop positive relationships and exhibit greater resilience and emotional stability (ARACY, 2021). This stability fosters a supportive environment crucial for mental health.
Conversely, frequent absences can lead to a range of negative outcomes. Research by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) shows that absenteeism is associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, as students miss out on vital social interactions and structured routines (ACER, 2019). The disruption caused by irregular attendance can exacerbate feelings of isolation and stress, further impacting a student's overall wellbeing.
Addressing barriers to regular school attendance is therefore crucial. We want to work together with families to ensure that all students benefit from the routine, social engagement, and support that consistent schooling provides, ultimately promoting their emotional and psychological health. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's Pastoral Leader.

Staff Changes
In Term 4, there will be the following staff changes:
- Mr Krijn van Gils will be taking on an Acting role at Marymount College. This will be for the first 7 weeks. Mrs Danielle Jorgensen will be stepping up into the role of Acting Assistant Principal – Student Wellbeing during this time. Mr Mark Meikle will assume the Acting Program Leader – Learning and Pedagogy position currently held by Mrs Jorgensen. We wish Mr van Gils all the best with this opportunity.
- Mrs Elisabeth Lord recently left the College to take on an opportunity at St Francis’ College, Crestmead. We thank her for her efforts during her time at Chisholm Catholic College and wish her every success into the future.
- We are currently advertising for replacements for Mrs Lord and Mr Van Gils, and expect to appoint suitable applicants for next term.
Announcement of 2025 Student Leaders
I am very proud to announce our 2025 Student Leadership Team.
Appointments have been made following a process seeking to understand the leadership potential of all applicants. They have attended interviews and delivered speeches to their peers, expressing their intent for next year. The selection of leaders considered all of these components, as well as discussions with key staff following voting.
This will be an amazing team, building upon the efforts of those who have gone before them.
We congratulate them all!

Term 3 Progress Reports
Reports for Term 3 for Years 7-11 will be available on the Parent Portal via The Learning Dashboard link on Tuesday, 8th October. These reports will include results and the Approaches to Learning for each subject for Term 3.
Sun Safety
As we move into spring and the warmer weather next term, it is important to remember our sun safety. Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world and skin cancer, unlike many other cancers, is largely preventable — by appropriate protection from UV radiation. Hats are required to be always worn when students are outside the classroom. Students are reminded to apply sunscreen before they attend school as well as using the sunscreen that is available for all PE related classes.

Year 7 Formation
Jingeri Jimberlung: Hello Friend.
Last week the Year 7s experienced their first High School formation day. The focus of the day was making connections, and students worked through a number of activities to make closer connections with themselves, each other and the community around them. This included a workshop with our First Nations Officer Ms Campbell; a quest to explore Caroline Chisholm’s story and connecting to the spirit of Living Christ’s Challenge through the sharing of gifts and talents. Thank you to Mrs Ibell, Mr Glennon, Ms Campbell and all the teachers who joined us on the days.
A special shout out to amazing Year 12 student Alex Banki for sharing their gifts! Alex has repainted the existing cross adjacent to our Anzac Garden, and we have begun our work to all connect as Christ’s body by placing our thumb print on the cross. The Year 7s are complete, with Year 8 up next.

Year 9 Service Learning – Infinite Care
After a pause through the flu season, the Year 9 Intergenerational Program has resumed. Each Thursday, a small group of Year 9 students, accompanied by members of the College staff, visit Infinite Care Aged-Care at Cornubia. This outreach allows our students to put into action the values of hospitality, compassion and kindness central to Living Christ’s Challenge. The feedback from all parties has been overwhelmingly positive and our students continue to look forward to the visits.

Season of Creation
The month of September sees the Season of Creation in the Catholic Church.
“The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home”. About - Season of Creation
The theme for this year is To Hope and Act with Creation. Early next term, we invite all the Chisholm Community to join us in prayer and action to care for our common home.
We pray:
Be the shepherd seeking the lost sheep, the farmer allowing the 'weeds' and the wheat to grow together until harvest time or the mustard seed growing into a plant that will shelter the birds of the air. May we follow him in having that same care for creation today.
Amen.

Why We Learn Until the End of Term
As we approach the end of Term 4, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and fatigue. The finish line is in sight, and the temptation to ease up on studies can be strong. However, it’s crucial to keep learning until the very last day of term. This is so important on many levels.
Throughout the term, students have been introduced to a variety of new concepts and skills. The final weeks are essential for consolidating this knowledge. Revisiting and reinforcing what has been learned ensures that students retain information and can apply it in future studies and real-life situations. Additionally, many subjects have end-of-term assessments or exams that contribute significantly to their overall Semester 2 grades. Consistent effort until the end helps students perform their best in these assignments and exams. It’s not just about passing exams but demonstrating a deep understanding of the material.
Learning to the end of term instils a strong work ethic and resilience. These qualities are invaluable, not just in school but in all areas of life. By maintaining focus and dedication, students develop habits that will serve them well in their future careers and personal endeavours. The end of term often includes group projects and collaborative activities. These experiences teach students how to work effectively with others, a skill that is crucial in both academic and professional settings. Participating fully until the end ensures that everyone benefits from these collaborative efforts.
Every lesson, every day, is an opportunity to learn something new. Teachers plan their curriculum to ensure that each term is packed with valuable content. Missing out on the final weeks means missing out on important learning experiences that could spark new interests or clarify complex topics.
Parents, your support is vital in helping students stay motivated. Encourage your children to keep up their efforts and remind them of the importance of finishing strong. Celebrate their hard work and progress, and help them see the value in every day of learning.
Students, remember that your education is a journey, not a race. Each step, each lesson, and each challenge is a building block for your future. Embrace the opportunity to learn and grow, right up to the last day of term. Your dedication and perseverance will pay off in ways you might not yet realize.
Let’s make the most of every moment and finish this term in the Chisholm way with Ambition and Integrity!
Year 8 Spotlight
Year 8 has been busy this term with some more practical hands-on learning. Our dedicated teachers have designed innovative, hands-on projects that not only make learning fun but also deepen students’ understanding of key concepts. Here’s a closer look at what our Year 8 students have been up to in Maths, History, and Religion.
Maths: Learning Linear Equations Through Board Games
In Maths, our Year 8 students have been channeling their creativity to design and create board games. These games are specifically crafted to help them understand and practice linear equations. Examples include adaptations of popular games like UNO, Snakes and Ladders, and even a rugby throwing points challenge. By incorporating mathematical challenges into the gameplay, students are able to reinforce their learning in an engaging and interactive way. This project not only enhances their grasp of linear equations but also fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
History: Creating Primary Sources on the Black Death
Our History classes have taken a unique approach to studying the Black Death. Students are tasked with creating primary sources by artistically and authentically designing health advice posters from the era. This project allows them to delve into historical research, understand the impact of the Black Death, and express their findings creatively. By stepping into the shoes of people from the past, students gain a deeper appreciation of historical events and their significance.
Religion: Building Cathedrals in Minecraft for Education
In Religion, students are exploring the architectural and spiritual significance of cathedrals by using Minecraft for Education. This project involves designing and constructing their own cathedrals within the game. Through this immersive experience, students learn about the historical and cultural importance of these structures, as well as the engineering and artistic skills required to build them. Minecraft provides a dynamic platform for students to collaborate, innovate, and bring their visions to life.

Mr Krijn van Gils
R U OK? Day: A Community of Care and Connection
At Chisholm Catholic College, we take pride in fostering a community where care, compassion, and connection are at the heart of everything we do. This year, R U OK? Day will provide us with another valuable opportunity to reinforce these values and remind everyone of the importance of checking in with one another.
R U OK? Day is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a movement that encourages open and honest conversations about mental health and well-being. On this day, we will encourage our students, staff, and families to take the time to ask a simple question: "Are you okay?" This question could make all the difference to someone who may be struggling.
This year, the Student Support Committee Leaders, along with our dedicated staff, are organising a series of activities to mark the day.
Additionally, we are looking forward to seeing all students wear yellow during the casual clothes day as a symbol of recognition and solidarity for R U OK? Day. The bright colour will serve as a reminder to all of us to be aware of those around us and to offer support whenever it’s needed.
Our commitment to well-being extends beyond just one day. R U OK? Day will serve as a reminder that at Chisholm, we are all part of a caring community where mental health is prioritized every day of the year. We will continue to encourage everyone—students, parents, and staff alike—to engage in these important conversations and to always be ready to offer a listening ear and a helping hand.
As we move forward, we aim to keep the spirit of R U OK? Day alive, ensuring that our College remains a place where everyone feels connected, supported, and valued.

Uniform Reminders – Summer Uniform
As we transition into the warmer months, it is essential that we maintain the standards set in our revised College Uniform Policy. From the start of Term 4, students are required to wear the summer uniform, and we will be placing a strong emphasis on ensuring that all students adhere to the summer uniform guidelines, including the compulsory wearing of the College Formal hats.
Hats, in particular, are a vital component of the summer uniform. With the harsh Australian sun, it's crucial that students protect themselves from harmful UV rays. We encourage all students to make wearing their hats a habit whenever they are outdoors.
We understand that maintaining uniform standards requires collective effort. Therefore, we ask for the support of parents and guardians in ensuring that students leave home each day dressed in their full summer uniform, including their hats. This not only helps reinforce the importance of the Uniform Policy but also supports the College’s efforts to foster a disciplined and respectful environment.
In the coming weeks, staff will be conducting regular uniform checks to ensure compliance. We will be addressing any inconsistencies promptly and working with students to correct any issues. Our goal is to see every student wearing their summer uniform with pride and adhering to our College’s expectations.
By focusing on uniform compliance, we are not just enforcing a policy; we are reinforcing the values of respect, responsibility, and community that are at the heart of our College ethos. We look forward to seeing all our students proudly wearing their summer uniforms, including their hats, as we continue to represent our College with pride.
Celebrating the Final Countdown: 50 Days to Go!
As we approach the final 50 days of the school year, our Year 12 students had the opportunity to celebrate this significant milestone with a special breakfast event. The school community gathered to honour our seniors, marking the beginning of the final stretch before graduation. This joyful occasion provided a chance for reflection and camaraderie, as students and staff came together to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that have brought them to this point.
This milestone represents more than just a number; it’s a testament to the resilience and commitment of our students as they prepare for the culmination of their secondary education. Over the next 50 days, we encourage everyone to embrace this final stretch with enthusiasm, make the most of every opportunity, and continue to shine.
Looking ahead, the upcoming weeks will be filled with a mix of challenges and celebrations. It’s a time to focus on personal goals, strengthen relationships with peers and teachers, and take pride in the progress made throughout the year. Let’s make these final days as impactful and rewarding as possible, ensuring a strong finish to an extraordinary school year.
Here’s to celebrating the achievements of our Year 12 students and looking forward to the bright futures that await them!

Mr Brendan Taylor
The SEDA Football group travelled to Pacific Pines for Round 7 of the prestigious QFSL competition. The girls’ games were close fought and we welcomed a couple of new players who did really well on the day and look forward to their contributions going forward. The boys' teams came away with 2 wins and a draw leaving all age groups in contention for a top 2 spot and potentially a place in the grand final later in the term.
In the same competition, we were hosts to Varsity last week with some very close fought games across all age groups with the highlight being the Junior Boys 3-2 victory. We went into the final games yesterday against Stretton with the possibility of clinching a top 3 finish. All boys' teams won their games against Stretton so now await the final table standings and grand final spots.
The highlight of the day though was the Senior girl's narrow loss but Emily scoring all 5 goals for the team and also Gabby being selected for the South Coast district Futsal team, the only player from the Pacific district to do so.

Last week the U14 Boys travelled to Annerley for the ISSA Cup for the Semi Finals. We went up against St Josephs Gregory Terrace, while Ipswich Grammar battled it out with Padua College in the other semi-final.
After drawing 2-2 in normal time, it went to golden goal extra time where the teams could still not be separated so it went to a penalty shootout where unfortunately Chisholm lost on sudden death.
What a great effort to get to the last 4 of this prestigious competition in Southeast Qld.

Congratulations Matilda!
Tilly was selected last year to represent Australia in the 16yrs Girls Futsal team, travelling to Brazil in August.
The team travelled to Rio, Teresopolis, Belo Horizonte and Diamentia to play their games, participate in training lessons and tour the sights. The team were swamped by the Brazilian children signing autographs and posing for photos but they took it all in their stride.
The team had a successful competition, winning four games, tying one and only losing 2. This was the best results of any Australian U16 Team in over 3 years!
We congratulate Tilly on this amazing achievement!

Mrs Yasmin Relja
Write A Book In A Day
Last Friday in our Library, five young ladies, Vinya, Mayah, Bonnie, Abigail, and Aisha were producing a book. Starting at 8am and continuing until 8pm, these Year 9 students spent 12 hours cloistered in the Library brainstorming, planning, drafting, writing, and illustrating their entry for Write A Book In A Day Challenge. Why? To raise money for the Kids’ Cancer Project. In previous weeks, the girls cooked up a storm and sold their tasty treats raising $298.90 to aid in supporting vital childhood cancer research. There are 13,001 writers, 1,869 teams, 520 schools and writing groups and $728,598 raised so far this year.
