Mr Damian Bottaccio
Get On With It!
As we dive into Term 4, it really is time to “Get On With It!” This isn’t just about moving forward; it’s about embracing challenges, taking initiative, and making the most of every opportunity.
For students, this means tackling assignments with enthusiasm, participating actively in class, and not shying away from asking questions. Remember, every challenge is a chance to learn and grow. Push past procrastination, embrace new experiences, and strive for excellence. Whether it’s a tricky math problem or a new project, let’s face it head-on and give it our best shot.
Parents, your support is crucial in this journey. Encouraging your children to stay organized, manage their time effectively, and maintain a positive attitude can make a world of difference. Let’s work together to create an environment where students feel motivated and empowered to take on new challenges.
Parents and Community Association (PCA) – B Block Air Conditioning and Solar
The PCA provides valuable support to me, advising on aspects of strategic planning and growth around the College. A key element of their work is to provide guidance and support as to how P&F Levies are utilised, ensuring that there is parent voice. With the support of the PCA, we have now air-conditioned B Block – a welcome improvement, just in time for summer. No doubt, this notable support will be appreciated by students and staff alike.
Further, we are well down the path towards planning for the installation of solar within the College. The installation of a 100kW system is planned for completion during the upcoming school holidays. This investment will be a tremendous help in off-setting electricity demands within the College and allow for such things as additional air conditioning.
The next meeting of the PCA is tonight! Come along and be a part of the discussions that impact greatly on our College.
Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy and the Safeguarding Policy Framework
At Brisbane Catholic Education we are serious about ensuring communities are safe, supportive and inclusive, where all students can grow and thrive.
- The safety and wellbeing of students and adults-at-risk is paramount, and we have zero tolerance for abuse and exploitation.
- We all have a role to play to ensure that students are safe and feel safe - safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and its embedded in all that we do.
- BCE has a new Safeguarding Policy Framework Brisbane Catholic Education Policies (chisholm.qld.edu.au) which clarifies our approach to safeguarding. Further information about how we safeguard students will be reflected in our revised Child and Risk Youth Management Strategy (2024-2025) – to be uploaded for the start of next week. You are able to view the current version here – Student Protection (chisholm.qld.edu.au).
Printed copies of both documents are available at the school office.
- The safeguarding policy framework applies to key adults who engage with BCE schools, including parent volunteers.
- If you have concerns or worries about a student, you can contact the schools identified Student Protection Contacts – Damian Bottaccio, Alex Hodgson, Melissa Reardon and Lynette Chan.
The Importance of Attendance at the Start of a New Term
Ensuring consistent attendance is crucial for students’ academic success and overall development. Research from the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) in Australia highlights the significant impact of regular attendance on student achievement and engagement.
Studies show that students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform better academically. For instance, CESE’s research indicates that consistent attendance is linked to higher academic performance and better long-term outcomes. (Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE). 2024. Understanding Attendance an Updated Research Review on School Attendance). This is because regular attendance helps students stay on track with the curriculum, understand expectations, and build essential peer relationships.
In addition to academic benefits, regular attendance fosters a sense of belonging and connectedness within the school community. It allows students to participate in classroom discussions, access support services, and engage in extracurricular activities, all of which contribute to a well-rounded education.
Prioritising attendance sets the foundation for a successful academic journey. We must work together to promote and support regular attendance, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Catholic Mission Month
October marks Catholic Mission Month, a special time for our school to come together as a community of faith and action. During this month, we focus on living out the Gospel message by supporting global mission efforts that bring hope, education, and compassion to those in need. Catholic Mission, inspired by Jesus' call to “go out to the whole world,” works in partnership with local communities in many parts of the world to empower people and improve their lives. Throughout the month, our Year 7 students will be engaging in activities as part of our Religious Education unit that raise awareness about global issues, such as poverty and inequality, and lead the school in the Crazy Sock fundraiser.
More to come!
Season of Creation
The Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, celebrated on October 4th, Honors the life and legacy of St. Francis, known for his deep love of nature and animals. St. Francis, the patron saint of ecology, calls us to recognise the presence of God in all creation and to live in harmony with the natural world. St. Francis' life was a testament to humility and love for all creatures, aligning perfectly with the themes of the Season of Creation, which urges humanity to care for our "common home" as highlighted by Pope Francis in Laudato Si'.
At Chisholm we are blessed by a natural bush landscape, and in celebration of the 2025 Season of Creation, we are excited to have Alice from Caritas EarthCare visit our school and share some of her wisdom with our Year 8s. We also have a very exciting project planned in honour of our ongoing stewardship of our land and resources, and we can’t wait to share more with you soon!
A Prayer of St. Francis:
"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy."
Wishing you a blessed term where the light and joy shines.
God bless.

Reaching the Finish Line in Term 4
As we embark on Week 2 of Term 4, I want to take a moment to encourage our students to stay focused and motivated as we approach the finish line of this academic year. Term 4 is a crucial period, and with the right mindset and strategies, every student can achieve their best.
Setting clear, achievable goals is the first step towards success. Whether it’s improving grades, completing assignments on time, or preparing for exams, having specific targets helps maintain focus and direction. Organisation is key to managing the demands of Term 4. Use planners or digital tools to keep track of important dates, deadlines, and study schedules. Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks can make them less overwhelming. Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Reach out to teachers, peers, and family members for support. Our teachers are here to help clarify doubts and provide guidance.
While academics are important, maintaining a balance is crucial for overall well-being. Ensure you are getting enough rest, eating healthily, and taking breaks to recharge. Engaging in physical activities and hobbies can help reduce stress and keep you energised. As you strive to reach your goals, remember to embody the charisms of Faith, Ambition, Integrity, Mercy, Commitment, and Love. These values will guide you not only in your studies but in all aspects of life. Live Christ’s Challenge by showing compassion, resilience, and a deep sense of community. Finally, take time to celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Recognising your achievements along the way can boost your confidence and keep you motivated.
Advice for Year 12 Students Entering External Exams
For our Year 12 students entering their external exam period, this is a pivotal time. Here are some tips to stay grounded and focused:
- Prioritise Your Well-being: Ensure you are getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and taking breaks to relax. Your health is paramount.
- Stay Positive: Keep a positive mindset and remind yourself of your strengths and achievements. Confidence can significantly impact your performance.
- Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness activities such as deep breathing, meditation, or light exercise to reduce stress and stay centered.
- Stay Connected: Lean on your support network—friends, family, and teachers. Sharing your concerns and seeking advice can provide comfort and clarity.
- Attend the tutorials that we offer: This is a great opportunity to seek clarity from your teacher, touch base with other students and refresh yourself on any last-minute cramming that is needed 😊
To celebrate your hard work and to wish you the best of luck, we invite all students in the Year 12 General English exam (28th October) to a Good Luck BBQ Breakfast on the deck of the staffroom from 8am. It’s a great opportunity to connect, enjoy some good food, and gather strength for the exams ahead.
Let’s make Term 4 a period of growth, achievement, and fulfillment. Together, we can reach the finish line with pride and a sense of accomplishment.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward: Uniform, Preparedness, and Pride
The beginning of each term brings a new chance to succeed, and success starts with having the right attitude and putting your best foot forward. One key way to do this is by wearing the school uniform with pride and meeting school expectations. These are not just rules to follow; they are essential steps in preparing for success, both in and out of the classroom. When students uphold these standards, they reflect the respect they have for themselves, their peers, and the school community, setting a positive tone for their learning and personal development.
Wearing the school uniform is not just about adhering to a dress code; it’s a daily reminder of belonging to something larger—a collective identity that fosters unity and pride. It levels the playing field, allowing students to focus on their education and character rather than appearance. When students adhere to uniform guidelines, they demonstrate discipline, responsibility, and attention to detail—qualities that are crucial not only in school but also in life. These habits help build a foundation for the future, instilling a sense of accountability beyond the classroom.
Preparing for learning also includes bringing the necessary equipment to class daily. Whether it’s textbooks, notebooks, pens, calculators or charged laptops, having all the required materials ensures students are ready to engage fully with the lessons. This level of preparedness supports active participation and fosters a productive classroom environment. Students who come equipped for their studies show responsibility and respect for the learning process, helping create a positive and focused atmosphere for themselves and their peers.
Maintaining uniform standards, being prepared for class, and respecting the College environment require a shared commitment. We ask for the continued support of Parents and Guardians in ensuring students leave home each day fully dressed in their summer uniform and equipped for learning. By embracing these expectations, students are not just following rules but laying the groundwork for future success. We look forward to seeing all students proudly representing the College, wearing their uniforms with pride, and contributing to a respectful and positive learning environment.

Both Tia and Kasey will compete at the INA Nationals Championships in Perth in February 2025, where Australian teams will be selected. We wish Tia and Kasey all the best for the upcoming season!

Student Travel - Go Cards
Each term we acquire a significant amount of unnamed, unregistered Go Cards. We ask if could you please name your child's Go Card along with their PC. You can also go to translink.com.au to register your Go Cards. The QLD government said last week about $8.6 million was transferred to Translink's coffers last financial year from go cards that had gone dormant after five years of inactivity.
