Celebrating World Teacher’s Day – Friday
On Friday, we join the global community in celebrating World Teacher’s Day 2024. This special day is dedicated to honouring the incredible contributions of our teachers, who play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of our young learners.
Our teachers are more than just educators; they are mentors, guides, and role models. They inspire curiosity, foster a love of learning, and help students navigate the challenges of growing up. Their dedication and passion for teaching create a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
On this day, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reach out to our teachers and express your gratitude. A simple thank you can go a long way in acknowledging their hard work and commitment. Whether it’s a note, an email, or a kind word in person, let’s show our appreciation for the positive impact they have on our children’s lives.
Thank you to all our teachers for your unwavering dedication and for making a difference every day. Your efforts are truly valued and celebrated.

The Importance of Feedback in Learning and Teaching
As we move rapidly towards the end of the year and we begin our planning and preparations for 2025, it is important that we take time to reflect on our Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2024. I want to highlight the critical role of feedback in our teaching and learning practices and why we will continue to focus on feedback into the future. Feedback is not just a tool for assessment; it is a cornerstone of effective education that empowers students to take charge of their learning journey.
Why Feedback Matters
Research consistently shows that high-quality feedback can significantly enhance student learning outcomes. Effective feedback provides students with clear, actionable insights, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Studies have found that feedback can improve student learning by up to eight months.
Student Involvement
Involving students in the feedback process is essential. When students actively participate in giving and receiving feedback, they develop a sense of ownership and responsibility for their learning. This engagement encourages them to set personal goals and work diligently towards achieving them. For instance, students will use peer feedback to review each other’s work, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Building Responsibility
Feedback helps students reflect on their performance, identify areas for improvement, and take proactive steps to enhance their learning. This reflective practice is vital for developing self-regulation and responsibility. In many classes, students receive detailed feedback on their assignments, which they use to create action plans for their next assignments. This process not only improves their writing skills but also teaches them to take responsibility for their learning progress.
Our commitment to providing specific, timely, and constructive feedback ensures that our students are not only informed but also motivated to strive for excellence. By focusing on feedback, we empower our students to become responsible, lifelong learners.

Attendance Matters: Every Day Counts!
As the Principal of our wonderful school, I want to emphasise the critical importance of regular school attendance. Every day your child attends school is a step towards a brighter future. Consistent attendance is not just about academic success; it also fosters social skills, builds a sense of community, and instils a lifelong love of learning.
What Can Parents Do?
If you are experiencing difficulties with your child’s attendance, here are some steps you can take:
- Communicate: Talk to your child about the importance of attending school and listen to any concerns they may have.
- Establish a Routine: Set a consistent bedtime and morning routine to make school attendance a habit.
- Seek Support: If there are underlying issues, such as anxiety or bullying, reach out to the school for support. We are here to help.
- Stay Informed: Keep track of your child’s attendance and be proactive in addressing any patterns of absenteeism.
Remember, we are partners in your child’s education. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
God bless!

Reporting
I would like to thank those parents who had issues with the portal for your patience in receiving the Term 3 Progress Report. If you are still having an issues with your accessing your report for Term 3 please contact Mr. Hodgson. Students can also access their report through the Learning Dashboard tile on their homepage for the school portal. This also includes information about where they are located in relation to the rest of their cohort. The Semester 2 / Unit 2 (Year 11) report at the end of the year will also include an Approaches to Learning information as well as the results for each subject.
Awards Night
Our Annual Awards Night will be held in Melaleuca on Wednesday 13th November. Invitations to Award Winners will be sent in Week 6. Students who receive invitations will be required to attend a rehearsal during the day on Wednesday 16th November. All current and incoming student leaders will also be required to attend the Awards Night. We look forward to the opportunity to recognise the outstanding efforts of many of our students.
Bike Safety
Bike safety is very important for all students who ride to school. Students need to wear helmets for their safety and it is a legal requirement. Students also need to take care when crossing the road at the front gate as there is a lot of traffic coming in and out during the afternoon.

Year 8 Formation
Last week the Year 8 students enjoyed a day of reflection, leadership and learning through the Formation Day, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made. We were blessed to have so many passionate teachers, presenters and supporters join us on the day and appreciated the enthusiasm students brought to each activity. A special thank you to Mrs Ibell, Campus Minister, our Guidance Counsellors Lynette and Melissa, Leadership gurus Mr Damen, Ms Schukraft, Ms Hyde and Mr Ellis and Alice Carwardine, Caritas Earthcare’s amazing coordinator.
St. Vincent De Paul’s Christmas Appeal.
Over the next few weeks Chisholm will launch the St. Vincent De Paul’s Christmas appeal. This year, the Vinnies Christmas Appeal focuses on the continuing impacts of the cost-of-living crisis in Australia, with a particular emphasis on the devastating and unrelenting impact on families. We encourage all families to give as much or as little as they can.
Season of Creation Mural
Although the Season of Creation has drawn to a close, the call to ecology and stewardship of the beautiful lands surrounding Chisholm Catholic College continues. This term, the Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts class have begun our Laudato Si mural located outside Student Reception. Laudato Si, an open letter from Pope Francis, urges everyone to take action to protect the planet for future generations, emphasising that environmental care is not just a scientific or political issue, but a moral one that affects all of humanity. Thank you to Ms Flaherty and our amazing artists for their work on this important piece of art in our school. We will keep you posted on its development.

Year 7, 8, 9,10: Planning the Term Ahead
All students have been provided with curriculum letters and an outline of the academic calendar for the term. In the email sent, students were given some tips for how they can use this to their advantage in Term 4. Parents have also been emailed a copy and these can also be located on the Parent Portal.
Students and Parents Working Together: Getting Through the Exam and Assessment Period
At the end of the year, students in all Year levels 7 to 11 will have some form of assessment due or an exam to be undertaken. It is a certainty that your child, may have at least one or multiple assessment and exams to complete. For some students, this is a significant challenge and can cause some anxiety and angst. Parents may expect their young people to be intrinsically motivated when it comes to these exams and assessment. This is because the importance of studying is obvious to many adults. It is not as obvious to our young people and as such may need some help to develop resilience and confidence in planning their time. Some suggestions which may help focus students are:
- Have a designated study space away from distractions.
- Make a list of all assessment and due dates and have this visible in your designated study space.
- Create a priority list based on when things are due or happening.
- Access OneNote for all prior learning in preparation for exams, look over class notes and create a study plan.
The Conversation has published an article that looks at the personal behaviours needed to successfully prepare for exams. Click here to read about:
- Motivation fluctuates
- Good foundations
- Balanced thinking promotes capability
- Focusing on what teens can control
- Reinforcing their worth, no matter what

Mrs Danielle Jorgensen
Talking to Teenagers: Evidence-Based Strategies for Effective Communication
One of the most common questions I’ve encountered throughout my career is, “How do you deal with teenagers?” Engaging with teens can often feel like navigating a minefield, as adolescence is a critical stage in their emotional and psychological development. How we communicate with our teens can significantly influence their self-esteem, emotional well-being, and decision-making abilities. Thankfully, research shows that you can build a strong and positive relationship with your teenager with the right approach.
Parents and Caregivers can create opportunities for conversation that are more likely to result in a verbal response rather than a shrug and grunt.
Make conversation part of their routine and look for moments when your teen seems most open to talking—perhaps during a car ride, while doing chores, or engaging in an activity together. It’s important to remember that there will be times when your teen doesn’t feel like talking and forcing the issue will probably have the opposite result. Respect their space but be ready to engage and seize the opportunity when it presents itself.
They spoke to me – now what?
When you do manage to start a conversation, ask open and curious questions that encourage further discussion and reflection. Rather than asking generic questions like “How was your day?”— which often leads to a one-word answer or a non-committal grunt, try alternatives that encourage dialogue. Here are some examples:
- "What was the best part of your day?"
- "Did you learn anything new today?"
- "Who did you hang out with at school?"
- "What made you laugh today?"
- "Was there anything challenging or frustrating for you today?"
These questions allow them to think more deeply and invite them to share their thoughts without pressure. If you succeed in getting responses, try follow-up questions like:
- "How did that make you feel?"
- "What ideas do you have for what to do next?"
If you are met with the infamous “I don’t know,” that’s okay. They may not have processed their emotions yet, but by continuing to encourage conversation, you are providing your child with a safe space to turn when they need to. These questions lead to more thoughtful responses and signal to your teen that you’re genuinely interested in their experiences.
Navigating the teenage years is undoubtedly challenging, but it is a time of significant growth where we can guide our children into the adults they will become. By working to encourage open communication, you can help foster a more open, honest and supportive relationship. A relationship that will aid their development and strengthen your family bond, creating a solid foundation of trust and communication that will serve you both into adulthood.

Year 12 Students
QTAC
We are incredibly proud of your Year 12 students who have received early offers through QTAC. These offers reflect their hard work, dedication and strong support from our school community. Congratulations to each of you for this fantastic milestone!
For those eagerly waiting for offers, if you do not receive an offer in this early round, there is nothing to be worried about – the main offer rounds are in December and January. You can register with QTAC to be updated on key dates at QTAC Remind Me.
If you are eligible for the 15 November offer round, your documentation must be submitted before 8 November 2024 to the application portal.
To all of our students waiting for offers and/or exploring other pathways, please remember this is just one step in a broader journey, and there are many routes to success. We are here to support you as you continue to work towards your goals.
QTAC Payment
A reminder to Year 12 students: several of you have not yet paid for your QTAC application. Please ensure this is completed as soon as possible to avoid any delays in processing your preferences for university admissions. Paying the QTAC application fee is essential for your application to be considered, so we encourage you to finalise payment promptly. If you need assistance or have any questions, please come and see me or send me an email.
How to respond to an offer
It’s important to understand how you’ll be notified and how to respond quickly to secure your place, and to know what options are available to you and how you can respond if you receive an offer.
QTAC offers:
QTAC will notify you of your offer by email, and possibly by SMS (if you registered for this). You only get one offer per offer round, for your highest eligible preference - that means the highest preference for which you have met the admission criteria and selection rank requirements. Therefore, it is important you check your email several times weekly.
Responding to an offer
- Accept - Check with the institution for enrolment details and dates
- Conditional response - By selecting a conditional response, you indicate that you would like to be considered for a higher preference
- Defer - Rules for course deferral vary by institution. Please visit QTAC’s deferment page for institution policies
- I no longer wish to study - By rejecting your offer outright, you notify QTAC that you no longer wish to study or be considered for any other preferences
It is essential that you respond by the due date (usually within four (4) days of receiving your offer). If you don’t, your offer will lapse, and you will not be considered for any other offer rounds. If you miss a due date, contact QTAC as soon as possible. Also, consider carefully if you wish to reject an offer – it may be more useful to conditionally accept or defer. If you wish to defer, please contact QTAC on 1300 467 822 to discuss this decision.
Visit the QTAC Offers webpage for specific information about responding to your offer.

Our U13 boys team truly stood out, making it to the final 16 teams out of 85—a commendable achievement! Although they were narrowly defeated by the eventual champions, Cathedral College Rockhampton, their performance left us all proud.
The girls' teams also made significant strides, with all groups improving by at least two positions from last year. Our U18 girls team finished a strong second in their pool, just missing out on the finals after an intense draw against Canterbury in their final game.
A big shout out to Mackenzie Robinson and Haylee J. Wolter, who earned recognition in the Gold Coast Bulletin for their exceptional skills on the field.
Most Valuable Players for the Tournament:
- U13 Boys – Byron Cochrane
- U13 Girls – Eloise Wessling
- U15 Boys – Lucas Wessling

In addition to the fantastic results on the field, we want to give a special shout-out to the players who dedicated time during the Term 3 holidays to achieve their Level 1 referee qualifications and put these skills into action at the tournament. Their commitment and love for the sport is exactly what we aim to foster in our program, and we couldn't be prouder of their efforts. These students not only competed with determination but also contributed to the smooth running of the event as certified referees, showcasing their all-around development in touch football. Congratulations to all our newly qualified referees for setting such a high standard of excellence both on and off the field!

Since the program was founded just last year, we’ve already seen remarkable growth—not only in the players’ skills on the field but also in their character. Our students are becoming respectful athletes who embody sportsmanship, determination, and compassion. Their eagerness to learn and grow under their coaches' guidance has been truly inspiring.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents, carers, and supporters who came out to cheer on our teams. Your unwavering support not only lifts the spirits of our athletes but also adds to the overall success of our program. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a strong community backing our students and school.
If you’re interested in joining this exciting program, trials for the 2025 season will begin in the first few weeks of Term 1. We look forward to seeing more young athletes grow and thrive in touch football!
Stay tuned for more updates!
