Mr Damian Bottaccio
This is my final Newsletter Article for 2024. I will be commencing Long Service Leave at the end of this week. Mr Alex Hodgson will be Acting Principal for the remainder of this year, with Mrs. Kristie Mackle taking on the role of Acting Deputy Principal.
I want to take the opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to our staff and parents, all those who have supported our students during the year. At next week’s Awards Evening, the efforts and achievement of our students will be on display. And I am confident that the partnership we have established between home and school has assisted in our students reaching these outcomes. Thank you!
College Awards and Graduation
The Awards Evening will be held on Wednesday, 13th November – 7:00-9:15pm. This is an open invitation to all families within our community to attend this significant event on our calendar.
We also look forward to the graduation celebrations. The Graduation Mass will be held at St Matthew’s Catholic Church on Thursday, 14th November. This will be a special occasion for our students and their parents, acknowledging our Catholic tradition. Then, on Friday, 15th November, we come together as a community to celebrate the Graduation Ceremony. This marks the end of 6 years at Chisholm Catholic College, but also 13 years of schooling. In advance, I wish every success to our graduands!
Cybersafety – Social Media
In recent months there has been much discussion within the community and at government level regarding efforts to address concerns with young people accessing social media. The Courier Mail has been providing regular dialogue as to the challenges experienced by young people and advocating for changes to age restrictions to be raised.
Having witnessed how social media has grown and developed over time, particularly the impact on students, I want to encourage all parents to be actively involved. Developmentally, our young people are not equipped with the logic and reasoning skills to be able to properly navigate and respond to what they experience online. I am horrified when I hear that children as young as 10 are provided a digital device and, without active supervision, create a variety of social media accounts. We are frequently called to take action when students interact negatively online, creating content that is intended to harm another. Sometimes, under the veil of anonymity, they use these platforms to gain support in ‘bullying’ others.
Over this last weekend, a resource was included in The Sunday Mail, prompting me to share. Why? When we (schools) are called to act, parents are often unaware of what their child is doing online. It is only through a committed partnership that we will be able to properly respond and support our young people. Being proactive is essential in achieving this.
Recently, TikTok partnered with the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) to enhance safety and privacy protections for teens on their platform. This collaboration is a significant step towards creating a safer online environment for our young people.
Key Resources for Parents:
- Guardian’s Guide: This comprehensive guide provides valuable insights into TikTok’s safety features and how to use them effectively. You can access it here.
- Family Pairing: This feature allows parents to link their TikTok account with their teen’s account, giving you control over screen time, direct messages, and content restrictions. Learn more about Family Pairing here.
- Digital Safety Pledge for Families: This pledge encourages families to discuss and commit to safe online practices together. It can be a great tool to open dialogue at home about digital safety. Access the pledge here.
The use of social media by younger students is fraught with challenges and dangers, including exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and privacy concerns. By partnering with FOSI, TikTok is taking proactive steps to address these issues. The new safety and privacy protections include stricter default privacy settings for teens, enhanced content moderation, and tools to help parents monitor and guide their children’s online activities.
Parents are empowered access to tools and knowledge to help their children navigate the digital world safely. The Guardian’s Guide and Family Pairing features are designed to foster a collaborative approach to online safety, ensuring that parents and teens can work together to create a secure online experience.
The Digital Safety Pledge is an excellent resource for families to start conversations about online safety. By discussing and agreeing on digital boundaries and expectations, families can build a foundation of trust and understanding. This pledge can help prevent potential issues and ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding safe online behaviour – it isn’t just about TikTok, it extends to all aspects of the online world.
I also highlight the resources provided by the eSafety Commissioner – click here. They are intended to support everyone – students, parents and schools. Did you know you could report inappropriate content there – actionable by federal police, social media organisations?
Together, we can create a positive and secure digital environment for our children.
God Bless!

2025 School Fees
During Term 3, a focus for Chisholm Catholic College was the preparation of the 2025 school budget. This work aimed to ensure we can continue to provide the best education for your child and protect the financial sustainability of the school.
The main factor influencing Chisholm Catholic College is the government funding model that determines our fees, based on student needs and calculated on a Direct Measure of Income (DMI) score.
This has resulted in an overall 3.5% increase in the school fees and levies for 2025.
I appreciate that an increase in fees can be difficult for some families in our community. If you have any concerns about the 2025 school fees, please contact the College to discuss your family’s circumstances.

Parents and students in Year 10 and 11 were emailed on Friday to alert them a change of date for their final day for 2024. They will now be finishing on Friday, 22nd November.
Assessment dates and the calendar will be adjusted to reflect this change. In consultation with the Academic Leaders, we are confident that this change of date can be accommodated and that it will not have an impact on student learning and assessment.
The Year 11 Exam Block which was scheduled for Week 8 will continue with no change. Students are not required on campus if they are not completing an exam, and they will finish for the year once their exams are completed.
The only exception will be for Year 10 students who have not yet completed their Cert I Work Readiness – they will be required on campus in Week 9 until it is completed.
If parents have questions or concerns about this change to the calendar, please contact the college.

St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal
From the Student Mission Committee:
On Monday 4th November, the Mission committee will launch the 2024 St. Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal. Each year, Chisholm families so generously support the St. Vincent De Paul Christmas appeal, donating food and Christmas items to give to families in need.
Starting Monday, all PCs are invited to collect nonperishable food and Christmas items, such as the ones listed below. These will be collected by members of the student leadership team and donated to St. Vincent De Paul, who will turn them into hampers and give them directly to families.
This drive will run until Wednesday, 20th November (Week 8). There are many families in need in our community, and your generosity will ensure that all people experience some joy this Christmas.
We thank you for your support.

As we commenced Term 4, the College installed a signboard at the school entrance, recognising the land where our College community learns and teaches. This initiative is part of our journey towards a commitment to reconciliation within our school community. We appreciate Mr. Bottaccio and Mrs. Mackle for their continuous dedication to our College as we progress into the future united. This artwork was developed in collaboration with students and artist Ms. Brodhi McCormick and is also featured on the College sports uniform.
The story of our Journey to Belonging is below:

St Paul's Primary School - Woodridge Appeal
Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful school community of St. Paul’s Woodridge. This small community bears such a loving and gentle spirit, and I am so thankful for the wonderful hospitality I was shown while I was there.
Currently, St. Paul’s are seeking donations to be used as prizes in their cent drive, raising money to support a number of their students who have been selected to represent Australia in Futsal. If you have any suitable items, or would like to support this event, please see the flyer below.

As we open our St. Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal, I offer this prayer, written by a past student, in the hope that all experience the hope, love and peace offered by the gift of our Saviour this Christmas.
Dear God,
I pray that the poor and homeless have a life like mine. That they may have food, a home and an education.
Deliver us all, God, from evil. Jesus guard us.
Amen.
God Bless.

Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen
As we progress through Term 4, Week 6 at Chisholm Catholic College, we are excited to share an innovative development in our educational approach. This year, we have introduced Microsoft Copilot, a generative AI tool, to support our teachers and enhance the learning experience for our students. This technology offers numerous benefits, but it also presents challenges that we must navigate thoughtfully.
**Strengths of Generative AI:**
1. **Personalised Learning:** Generative AI can tailor educational content to meet the diverse needs of our students, providing customised resources and support.
2. **Efficiency for Teachers:** By automating routine tasks such as lesson planning, AI allows teachers to focus more on interactive and creative aspects of teaching.
3. **Enhanced Engagement:** AI can create interactive and engaging learning materials, making complex subjects more accessible and enjoyable for students.
**Weaknesses of Generative AI:**
1. **Accuracy and Bias:** AI systems can sometimes produce inaccurate information or reflect biases present in their training data. It is crucial to verify AI-generated content.
2. **Over-reliance:** There is a risk of becoming too dependent on AI, which might hinder the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students.
3. **Privacy Concerns:** The use of AI involves data collection, raising concerns about the privacy and security of student information.
To harness the full potential of generative AI while mitigating its drawbacks, we believe that critical literacy is essential. Teaching students to be critical consumers of information is key to 21st-century learning. This means encouraging them to question sources, evaluate the credibility of information, and understand the ethical implications of AI.
In a recent professional development exercise, our teachers were challenged to create images of our school and themselves using AI. This activity honed their skills and sparked rigorous debate and discussion on the importance of crafting and writing prompts to achieve the best outcomes. Such experiences underscore the value of critical literacy and the thoughtful use of technology in education.
This initiative aligns with the Australian Curriculum's General Capabilities, particularly in **Digital Literacy**, **Critical and Creative Thinking**, and **Ethical Understanding**. By integrating these capabilities into our curriculum, we aim to equip our students with the skills they need to navigate an increasingly digital world responsibly and effectively.
Additionally, we want to assure you that Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) has stringent data privacy measures in place. All information generated and used by AI tools remains within our secure system, ensuring the privacy and security of student data.

The Importance of Complying with the Uniform Policy
At Chisholm Catholic College, we have worked closely with our community to develop a comfortable uniform that benefits and reflects our entire school. Adhering to the uniform policy is more than just following rules; it is essential in fostering a positive and productive learning environment.
One of the primary benefits of a school uniform is promoting equality among students. Uniforms help eliminate the pressure to wear the latest fashion trends and reduce socio-economic disparities. This means that all students, regardless of their backgrounds, can feel a sense of belonging and focus on their education rather than their attire.
Uniforms contribute to a sense of school spirit and identity. Students wearing uniforms represent Chisholm Catholic College and demonstrate their pride and commitment to the school community. This shared identity can foster a sense of unity and belonging, encouraging students to take pride in their school and education.
Our uniform policy helps minimise distractions in the classroom. When students wear the same attire, there is less focus on clothing and more on learning. This can improve concentration, better behaviour, and higher academic performance. Research has shown that schools with uniform policies often see a reduction in behavioural issues and an increase in student engagement.
Uniforms also play a significant role in ensuring safety and security within the school. They make it easier for staff to identify students on campus and during school-related activities. This can help prevent unauthorised individuals from entering the school premises and ensure that students are where they are supposed to be.
Adhering to a uniform policy also prepares our students for the future. Many workplaces require specific dress codes, and by following the school’s uniform guidelines, students learn the importance of dressing appropriately for different settings. This can instill a sense of discipline and respect for rules that will benefit them in their future careers.
Having your child follow the uniform policy helps our staff maintain a consistent and disciplined environment. It reduces the need for constant reminders and enforcement of the dress code, allowing teachers to focus more on education and less on disciplinary issues. Ensuring that your student follows the uniform policy supports our collective effort to create a respectful and orderly school atmosphere. It is crucial for creating a cohesive, focused, and safe learning environment. By proudly wearing their uniforms, students contribute to a positive school culture and enhance their educational experience. We appreciate your support in ensuring that all students adhere to the uniform guidelines, helping us maintain our high standards at Chisholm Catholic College.

“Opportunities don’t happen, you create them.” – Chris Grosser
Congratulations!!
This year, Jack Marcon took on the thrilling challenge of the World Skills Competition, a prestigious event open to students from Australian RTOs, TAFEs, and universities. Competing among more than 50 trades and skills across seven clusters, Jack showcased his expertise in Information & Communications Technology. In a high-stakes environment, Jack was tasked with installing operating systems on virtual machines, crafting detailed guides, and ensuring the software was up and running smoothly. The competition was fierce, with participants meticulously following steps to earn points, which were then rigorously evaluated. Jack’s hard work and dedication paid off as he secured an impressive 3rd place finish! This outstanding achievement has earned him a spot in the State World Skills as a Brisbane Regional Winner. We couldn’t be prouder of Jack and wish him all the best as he continues to shine in the State World Skills! 🌟👏🎉

How to read an online job advertisement
An accurate reading and understanding of an online job advertisement is essential for preparing your job application. An online jobs site may have a short advertisement to attract your attention, with a link to a longer advertisement. The longer advertisement may still not provide all the information you need, particularly for public sector jobs. Following are ten critical details to note when reading an online job advertisement including:
- Name of organisation
- Sub-unit and location
- Job type and status
- Salary
- Duties and accountabilities
- Selection criteria
- How to apply
- Eligibility
- Position/inquiries contact
- Submitting an application and closing date

On Friday 18th October, the College community celebrated Creative Arts Night for 2024! Melaleuca was taken over by the Visual Art Exhibit and performance stage which saw art works and performances from over 250 students across the Creative and Performing Arts Department.
The Visual Art Exhibition, opened by members of the College PCA, provided a unique opportunity for audiences to engage with an impressive array of artworks created by students from Year 7 to Year 12. These works spanned both curriculum classes and the co-curricular Art Club, offering visual representations of Chisholm students' personal reflections and their perspectives on the world. Guests were also invited to cast their votes for the People’s Choice Awards. It was a remarkable display of talent, passion, and dedication to Visual Arts.
