Mr. Damian Bottaccio
COVID-19 Update and Alternative Education Provisions
We are nearing the end of four days of online learning and six days of Lockdown. It is certainly challenging times for all in the community and we do hope that all families are keeping safe and well. Later in the Newsletter is a more detailed update, including some of our local areas that have been identified as part of the Contact Tracing. Please take the time to read and address any relevant actions listed.
A key request is that if your family is required to isolate or quarantine, please contact the College via scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au This will become even more important should school resume next week.
Students and staff are well into online learning now. We have received some very positive feedback on how classes are progressing, particularly the engagement of our students. The partnership between school and home is crucial during this time. Please let us know of your thoughts – we are very happy to share any positive feedback that you may provide.
Should the Lockdown be extended, we will continue to maintain the standard set and seek to ensure that learning continues. We appreciate the support of all parents and students, and are very thankful for the effort made by our staff.
Catholic Education Week and Scholars’ Assembly
Last week we celebrated ‘Catholic Education Week’ and we continue to celebrate 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia.
Looking forward, our Year 7 cohort for 2022 has been finalised and I look forward to seeing 200 students joining us for our 30th year of providing Catholic Education. We always ask why parents want to send their child to Chisholm. As you could appreciate, I get a lot of interesting replies. One that is not uncommon is that parents are seeking a ‘good private school’ for their child. I always respond to those parents, nicely, but remind them that Chisholm is not a ‘private school’. Chisholm is a very public Catholic school! In fact, we are part of Brisbane Catholic Education; part of the Archdiocese of Brisbane and with around 130 schools – Primary, P-12 and Secondary. ‘Private Schools’ illicit an image of privilege and elitism. That is not who we are and what we are about.
Our families are very largely working families who sacrifice to have their children here and we offer support to those families who struggle to pay full fees. Chisholm is open to families who share the values about which we are very clear, modelling our motto to “Live Christ’s Challenge”. Our focus is never to take on the exclusivity of ‘private schooling’.
As a Catholic, my family and I have associated with Catholic Education for many years, certainly for all of my life. I firmly believe that Catholic schools have progressed to providing a full education; we refer to this as holistic education – academic, spiritual, social, emotional, cultural and physical. I often state that ‘Pastoral Care’ is a significant strength of our College, our teachers want the best from our students. We seek to work with all students and support them as they navigate their teen years, sometimes experiencing great challenges along the way.
Let’s not forget that ‘Learning’ is at the core of Catholic Education. To unlock one’s capabilities in whatever areas of strength or possible areas of ability is what we do. At last week’s Scholars’ Assembly, I spoke to the students and parents present (including those who were online) about being “the best possible whatever.” In doing so, I acknowledged the students whose Semester 1 results placed them in the top 10% in the cohort, receiving Academic Excellence or Academic Merit Awards. They are deserving of this recognition. But I take great pride in recognising the students who received an Academic Diligence Award. Any student is capable of achieving this award as it is not based on results; you do not need to get A’s. It recognises students who demonstrate commitment to their learning across all of their subjects. The support we offer is to enable students to make the decision to do their best – to demonstrate their God-given abilities and allow others to see and benefit. This is what we believe to be our purpose as a Catholic College.
College Musical
What an outstanding showcase of student talent! Large audiences were able to witness an amazing performance that entertained and brought great joy.
The leads, cast, ensemble, musicians, front and back stage crew are congratulated for how they committed to the many months of planning, preparations, rehearsals and then the actual performances. Again, an opportunity to extend their God-given abilities for all to see.
It takes courage to perform before an audience, especially if you aren’t an experienced singer, actor/actress, musician and/or dancer. The courage shown unlocks improved confidence, new friendships and a greater appreciation for what we want from students at Chisholm Catholic College.
Events such as these do not happen without the significant investment of many staff. It is a proud Principal moment to know that we have these committed people in our community. Thank you to the following staff:

Mr. Michael Boyle
Catholic Education Week
Last week was Catholic Education Week and the College celebrated the achievements of Catholic Schools with a significant prayer at our Scholar’s Assembly.
The official launch of the week took place with a Liturgy of the Word at St Stephen’s Cathedral with Archbishop Mark Coleridge as the presider. Our Campus Minister, Jo-Anne Ibell was accompanied by College Middle School Captains, Bradley Mugford and Ella Marshall at the Liturgy.
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/623/img_7991.jpg)
![](https://chisholmcc.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/624/img_7994.jpg)
The Liturgy was attended at 320 students from 58 schools across the archdiocese, with 85 invited guests. The Acknowledgment of Country was a colourful weaving by the Mirragin Dancers from Lourdes Hill College and by Cynthia Rowan.
A highlight of the event was the reflection that was woven into the readings from sacred scripture. Students from St Anthony’s School at Kedron, led a dramatized conversation about experiences in Catholic Schools and hopes for the future.
In 2021, Catholic Education is celebrating 200 years in Australia, marking the bicentenary of the first Catholic school established in Parramatta in October 1820.
The first Catholic school in Australia was founded in October 1820 by Irish Catholic priest Fr John Therry and run by convict and lay person George Marley. The school, which Catholic historians believe was in Hunter Street, Parramatta, taught 31 students. By 1833, there were 10 Catholic schools in the colony.
Over 200 years, Catholic schools have grown to become the largest provider of schooling in Australia (outside government) with one in five school age students attending a Catholic school. This represents 777,000 students in 1,755 schools across the country and employing over 100,000 teachers and staff.
Nearly 40 per cent of Catholic schools are located outside of metropolitan cities in regional, rural and remote communities.
Year 7 and Year 8 Retreat Days
Retreat Days are an important component of life at the College, where students get to focus on their Spiritual development. They are a day of liturgy, reflection, dialogue, games and activities.
Year 7 and 8 Retreat Days will be held this month:
17 August – Year 8 Retreat Day for Classes 8.1 – 8.4 – facilitated by the Passionist Youth Team
20 August – Year 8 Retreat Day for Classes 8.5 – 8.7 – facilitated by the Passionist Youth Team
27 August - Year 7 Retreat Day for Classes 7.1 – 7.4 – facilitated by College Staff
31 August – Year 7 Retreat Day for Classes 7.5 – 7.7 – facilitated by College Staff
The Retreat is an integral part of our College curriculum and so I ask that you support us with making sure that students are in attendance on the day. It will be a tremendous day and certainly one good for the soul.
Students may wear their sport uniform on the day.
Feast of St Mary of the Cross
On the 8 August, the Church celebrates the feast of St Mary (MacKillop) of the Cross, Australia’s own saint. It is a day to remember the accomplishments and devotion to God which was shown in the ministry of Mary MacKillop.
Prayer
At this uncertain time, may I offer the following prayer:
Lord Jesus, give us the grace to hear your voice,
And the strength to continue working for your kingdom in this time of pandemic.
Do not allow us to be indifferent to those who today suffer the loss of a loved one, or who suffer from the absence of work.
But give us the courage to accompany and side with those who suffer violence or injustice.
Amen.

Mr. Brendan Luxton
It was great to see everyone who attended the QTAC presentations led by Mrs. Scott. A reminder that the process opened on the 3rd of August. To support students, Mrs Scott has set up appointment times where students can discuss their strategy for applying and accepting placements. If you missed the presentation and are interested there is a link to the video on the Parent Portal.
At the end of this term, we will be holding a ‘Mock’ exam block for Year 12 students and they should have already turned their attention to preparing for the External Exams. A strategy for retaining and recalling information for assessment is accessing Prior Knowledge. Students can recall what they already know about a topic or process using: cues, questions, graphic organisers, images or summaries. Sentence prompts are useful cues to learning. For example:
- What have I done in the past that could link to this……
- This compares to….
- I predict….
- One thing I have heard or seen about this topic is….
This strategy helps to build connections between new and existing information.
Year 10s will still have their SET-Plans next week. We will conduct these interviews using Teams so that we are still be able to have these important meetings. There will be information coming this week as part of STRETCH that students and families will need to engage with in order to be able to book an appointment slot for next week. This process will be closed off on Friday, the 13th of August. Information for subject selection processes for Years 7-9 will start to happen next week for students. Year 7-9 subject selection processes will need to finalised by the 26th of August.
2021 Non- Government Schools Census
The annual Non- Government Schools Census occurs on Friday, 6th August. Attached is a document which outlines the rationale for the census and further information about this data collection. Please take the time to have a read of this notice.

Ms. Sarah Martyn
Congratulations to the Year 9 Readers’ Cup Team. On Thursday, 29th July, Ella Marshall, Alice Dyer, Olivia Fitzgerald and Jake Knox competed in a reading competition against fourteen other competitive teams across the Brisbane/Bayside region. These students read four novels throughout Term 2, in addition to their usual studies, to place 2nd in the competition. This is a significant achievement for these students and our College. Fantastic effort Ella, Alice, Olivia and Jake!

Musical
Our College musical, Footloose, burst to life on stage at SunPAC recently, thanks to over 60 students and staff! Since auditions way back in 2020, the production process has involved countless hours of rehearsal, design, planning, manufacturing, sewing, singing, dancing, supporting and shining. From ‘old timers’ to those who have never set foot on stage, students have given their all. The beautiful thing about a high school musical is the camaraderie that is forged as new talents and passions are explored.
The first full performance at SunPAC was to a thrilled audience of Year 6 students from St Matthew’s and St Edward’s. The reactions both during and after the show were awesome. By the time the curtain finally lifted on Friday night’s premiere, the cast and crew were ready, supportive flowers in hand, and took on the challenge superbly. By the end of the first show, it was all a blur of colour and song. On Saturday again the mood was exuberant. It’s tough to know that months of rehearsal comes down to four shows, but the applause at the end of each makes all the weekend rehearsals worth it. Tears were flowing fast afterwards, but the musical family were there to help each other.
We would like to thank every single person involved in this incredible production; those who sold merchandise at the venue and supervised backstage; those who built sets and designed earrings; those who organised more than 100 costumes; those who dropped off and collected students on weekends, and late nights; those who provided lighting and sound expertise. The Arts are close to our hearts at Chisholm because they let us escape, share, reflect and love. We hope that our students have enjoyed this experience and have joyful memories to last a lifetime.
My experience with Footloose will be one I will never forget. We all had one thing in common; we all wanted to put on an amazing production. From that we had a drive, that drew us together and we blossomed into a beautiful family. The Footloose family were always supportive and caring and they always had my back. Footloose is the reason I have made lifelong friends, gained more confidence, and had an experience I will never forget. – Olivia Fitzgerald (Year 9 Cultural Committee Leader)
Additional Footloose merchandise (badges, earrings and programs) are now available at a reduced price via the Parent Portal Parent Portal - Fees Payment (bne.catholic.edu.au)

Last week, Year 11 students attended the Logan City Council’s annual Ignite Careers Expo. This event provided our Year 11 cohort with the opportunity to investigate university and TAFE courses, and a range of study options provided by private colleges and institutions, as well as trade and training partners. We were very proud of the way our students engaged with exhibitors including the calibre of questions asked and resources gathered.

What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?
Sometimes there is a confusion with the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship. An apprenticeship is a structured training arrangement which usually lasts three to four years. The training combines practical experience at work with complementary off-the-job training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). On successful completion, you are issued with a nationally recognised qualification, and you have on-the-job skills which are highly regarded by many employers.
A traineeship is a training agreement between the trainee and their respective employer. The employer agrees to train the trainee in a specific industry and the trainee agrees to work and learn. Traineeships are available for people of all ages and usually last between one to two years (but can last longer), depending on the vocation and certificate level undertaken. SkillsRoad has more information which you can read about here.
Why a good attitude can matter more than experience
Having passion for the job, a good attitude and a willingness to learn can make you more attractive to employers than someone who has plenty of experience but comes across as bored, jaded or disinterested. Read the Seek article to find out about:
- Most employers choose passion over experience
- Your positive attitude can transform a workplace
- Employers are looking for people who add to the culture
- How to build a positive attitude
- How to demonstrate a great attitude to employers
Grade 12 Certificate II/III Hospitality Work Experience (Week 9 - 6th to 10th September)
Our Hospitality students will have the opportunity to gain some work experience in the industry to compliment their training in the classroom. To successfully complete Certificate III level qualification, students need 36 shifts in the industry (3 hours is one shift). Students have been rostered on in our on-site Hampton Café, Canteen and have also been provided shifts at the Suncorp Stadium for some practical hands-on experience.
Week 9 will also be allocated to students who need to bank in some industry shifts. They are encouraged to reach out and seek employers in the local hospitality industry. Employers love it when students are able to show enthusiasm, motivation and approach them. It tells them a lot about the students and their dedication, passion and commitment to the industry.
National Student Volunteer Week
