    Our Partnership

    I am committed to sustaining a partnership in learning with our parents and students. I firmly believe that for students to be truly successful with their learning, we need to work together – encouraging them to be their best possible selves.

    The Student-Led Conferences are one such example whereby we want parents/carers to be involved in your child’s education. Information regarding bookings for next week's Student-Led Conferences has been communicated and provide a fantastic opportunity for us to come together and discuss how our students can improve and achieve success. Dispelling a common misconception, the Conferences aren't just for students who are struggling or not fulfilling their capabilities - it is an open opportunity for all parents.

    The Parents and Community Association (PCA) is another way in which parents/carers can be involved. Our next Meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday 13th May, commencing at 6pm. This will serve as both an Annual General Meeting and General Meeting. It is a point of discussion and consultation, providing updates to parents on what is happening at the College. All are welcome!

    Tell Them from Me Survey

    In the coming weeks we will be inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience at our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.

    Included in next week's Upcoming Dates and Details email, we will invite parents/carers to complete the Tell Them from Me (TTFM) 'Partners in Learning' survey. As we value the important role of parents and carers within our school community, we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Chisholm Catholic College.

    The Student, Teacher, and Parent/Caregiver surveys enable our College to measure and understand the factors that are known to have a direct and profound impact on well-being and student learning, including:

    • Sense of self and purpose
    • Catholic faith and culture
    • Social, institutional, and intellectual student engagement
    • Sense of belonging
    • Safe and inclusive school
    • Quality of instruction
    • Advocacy at school and home

    The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

    Should you not want your child/ren to participate, we ask that you return a copy of the 'Opt-Out Form' and/or email scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au by Tuesday 6th May.

    Attendance Matters

    Student Attendance will continue to be an important matter that encourages and reinforces the relationship that exists between home and school. Our commitment is to be achieving 90% attendance for all students. The following data was as at the end of last week.

    It identifies that 55.6% of our students have maintained 90% or better attendance since the start of the year. Yes, there are many students sitting just below the 90% benchmark and there could valid reasons that prevented them from being at school.

    The following table identifies attendance for each year level. The dark green identifies students who attendance is 95% or better – light green 90-95%. You will clearly note the numbers of students whose attendance is not at 90%.

    These results are comparable to other Brisbane Catholic Education Colleges. And it should be noted that attendance is a challenge for many schools post-Covid. Regardless of this reality, we want to see improvement; we want students at school!

    We do identify those students whose attendance is exemplary and congratulate them on being at school.

    ‘Late Arrivals’ and ‘Early Departures’ impact a student’s attendance level. School commences at 8:35am – arriving late to PC does add up.

    90% attendance equates to:

    • 5 days absence per term
    • 10 days absence per semester
    • 20 days absence per year

    Expectations in a typical workplace is around 8-10 days per year of sick leave; therefore, the requirements for a typical student to achieve 90% are very achievable.

    Acceptable reasons for student absences are:

    • Illness;
    • Family trauma or bereavement;
    • Events of cultural significance;
    • Participation in school organised activities, eg. work experience;
    • Participation in representative sporting or cultural activities, eg. South Coast Sporting Trials.

    Unacceptable reasons for student absences are:

    • Unexplained;
    • Appointments;
    • Late;
    • Personal / Family reasons;
    • Holidays;

    If there are reasons that require students to absent for an extended period, please read the attached – Process for Applying for Leave.

    Chisholm_Catholic_College_Process_for_Applying_for_Leave_1_.pdf

    If there are concerns around your child, please contact the Pastoral Care Teacher or relevant Pastoral Leader to discuss. Together we would hope to support the student in achieving their best with attendance and studies.

    Again, we want all students at school – greater success can be achieved with committed attendance.

    God bless!

    Damian

    Progress Reports and Student Led Conferences

    Progress Reports for Term 1 were published on Thursday, 24th April. The reports can be accessed via the Parent Portal or the BCE Connect App. To access the reports you will need to use The Learning Dashboard tile on either the Portal or the App.

    Bookings for the Student Led Conferences on Tuesday 6th May are open and close on Monday 5th May. Teachers have requested a conference with some students but all parents are welcome to book a conference as the Student Led Conferences are a wonderful opportunity for you to discuss the progress of your child/children this year.

    Early Departure Tuesday 6th May

    To provide the opportunity for the Student Led Conferences on the 6th May, classes will finish at 11:00am that day and students will be able to leave from that time. The College will provide supervision for students who are unable to be picked up from the College at 11:00am. Bus services, including the College buses, will run in the afternoon at their normal times. A Parent Slip has been sent regarding the early departure on this day.

    Leaving school grounds

    Just a reminder that students are not allowed to go to the 7 Eleven, or any other shop, once they have arrived at school – either being dropped off by car or by bus. This is for both the mornings and afternoons. Once a student is at school they need to remain on school property.

    Assistant Principal - Curriculum's News

    Mrs Sarah Van Der Westhuizen

    Year 7, 8, 9, 10: Planning the term ahead.

    Students this week will be sent the Term 2 Curriculum Letters. These letters outline the academic calendar for the term.  In the email sent, students will be given some tips for how they can use this to their advantage in Term 2.  Parents will also be emailed a copy and these can also be located on the Parent Portal.

     Year 10: Why Term 2 Matters?

    As we step into Term 2, Year 10 students embark on a transformative journey—one that significantly shapes their academic path. Why does this term hold particular importance?

    Term 2 is content-rich. Students encounter new material while revising existing concepts. It’s a prime opportunity to evaluate progress and enhance marks.  Historically we have seen that motivation can wane, especially if desired marks haven’t been achieved. However, consistency and increased motivation during Term 2 can lead to remarkable transformations in results.  As part of the SET-Planning that will occur in Term 3, teachers will look at Semester 1 results as a pattern for learning.  Strong results in this Semester are important in providing evidence for students' desired pathways.  Students at risk of failing in Year 10 limit their opportunities in Senior.

    Research shows that habits take around 66 days to become automatic. Term 2 provides the ideal window to cultivate effective study habits.  Consistent efforts during this term lay the foundation for success in Years 11 and 12.

    In Week 7, students will have a day of career exploration.  In the evening the College will be hosting our Career Expo Evening.  This is an opportunity for parents to ask questions of our staff, stall holders and attend a presentation explaining the Senior years.  This leads into our SET-Planning.  This is a formalised process where students and carers sit down with one of our trained pathways teachers.  It is at this stage that we look at subject selection for senior studies.

    Term 2 isn’t just a bridge—it’s a launchpad toward future success. Embrace the challenges, stay motivated, and make the most of this transformative term!

    Year 11 & 12: Verifying Your myQCE Results.

    The Year 11 and 12 calendar for Term 2 has quite a busy schedule for assessment.  For students undertaking General units, most assessment for Unit 1 or Unit 3 will be finalised by week 6.  For parents of senior students, the change from assessment being due at the end of the term to mid-term can be quite a challenge.

    During Term 2, it’s also crucial for them to verify their results on the myQCE platform. By reviewing their results during Term 2, students can ensure accuracy and address any discrepancies before they reach the final deadlines in Term 4.  It’s an opportunity to confirm that their hard work is accurately reflected.  Below is a list of ways students can check and verify:

    Students should log in to their learning account on the myQCE website. This account provides access to subject and course enrolments, projected QCE eligibility, and, most importantly, their results.

    The Student Education Profile (SEP) is an important part of the myQCE login.  As this is where essential documents, including the Senior Statement and, if eligible, the QCE certificate can be found at the end of Year 12. When schooling is finalised students can download and save these documents as PDFs, making it convenient for sharing with employers or further education providers. The SEP features a unique document ID and a blue digital signature panel, ensuring their authenticity.  If students need a print copy of their Senior Education Profile, they can submit a request via their learning account. The QCAA provides free print copies for end-of-year and mid-year certifications, with specific timeframes for each.  These end of schooling certifications are provided through the myQCE portal pages.  Chisholm Catholic College does not provide students or have access to these individual documents. It is therefore very important that students check that their accounts are accurate and all their learning credits are applied.

    Learning Area Spotlight: Writer’s Toolbox Year 7 & 8 Classes.

    Students in Year 7 & 8 classes are using Writer’s Toolbox which is a program developed by Dr Ian Hunter’s research into enhancing students writing skills.  This research culminated in the online platform that students will be accessing to improve their writing this term across English, Religion, Science and Humanities.  As students' writing improves the system adapts and provides students with new learning experiences.  In this way, students can continually grow and are provided with instantaneous feedback.  Below is a link to a parent’s perspective on the efficacy of the program.

    A Parent's Perspective - Writer's Toolbox (writerstoolbox.com)

    Our year 7 & 8 students are all on board to use this program to help their writing.

    ANZAC Day March and Ceremony

    Last week Chisholm held its annual ANZAC day service and liturgy in Melaleuca.  We thank our special guests and members of our College community who join us in our commemoration and extend our thanks for our students readers and liturgy leaders, catafalque party, music ministry students and all students who attended so reverently and respectfully.

    On Friday morning, members of staff and the student population attended the Springwood RSL Tri-Services march and service at Springwood.  As always, we are so grateful to the members of our community who gave their time to represent our college and recognise all those who attended and participated in services across our region.

                                                                  Lest We Forget.

    Mothers Day Liturgy and Morning Tea

    To the Mothers and Grandmothers of Chisholm Catholic College, and those who act in the role, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our Mother’s Day Liturgy and Breakfast, held from 8:00am – 9:00am on Friday, 9th May, in the Chisholm Centre.

    Please RSVP to scornubia@bne.catholic.edu.au by Monday, 5th May, with any dietary requirements and names of your attending students.

    We look forward to celebrating the wonderful gift of mothers!

    Year 10 Formation Day

    On Wednesday, 7th May, our Year 10 students will participate in a formation day on campus in our Chisholm Centre led by Michael Fitzpatrick.  The focus of this day is leadership, personal development, and cohort unity, and Mr Fitzpatrick is always popular with our students.  No Year 10 classes will run on this day and students in Year 10 will be invited to wear their sports uniform on this day. Normal school times will apply.

    Year 9 Twilight Formation

    This year, we will trial a new Year 9 Formation Program with our Year 9 cohort, focusing on the topic “Let peace and justice flow”. As part of this experience, the Year 9s will have the opportunity to participate in a mock sleepout with the youth engagement team from the St. Vincent De Paul Society, and a mock Rosies outreach facilitated by the school in conjunction with the team from Rosies Beenleigh. For authenticity, this formation will run as a twilight, beginning from 2:00pm and ending at 6:00pm on Friday, 6th June.  Please note this is a compulsory activity and attendance is expected.

    A prayer for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, and the future of the Church.

    As we mourn the loss of Pope Francis, we thank God for the gift of his pontificate, marked by hope, fraternity and concern for the marginalised and poor.  We wait in anticipation for the announcement of his successor and pray that the Church continue his legacy of presence, peace and inclusion.

    May the soul of Pope Francis rest now in God’s eternal glory.

    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and forever shall be, world without end. Amen.

    Memorable Year 12 Formal at Victoria Park

    Last Thursday, our Year 12 students had an unforgettable evening at the Year 12 Formal held at the beautiful Victoria Park. The event was a perfect blend of elegance and celebration, marking a significant milestone in the students' journey at Chisholm Catholic College.

    The Formal was meticulously organized, with a detailed run sheet ensuring that everything went smoothly. The students arrived in their finest attire, ready to enjoy a night of dancing, dining, and making memories with their peers. The venue, Victoria Park, provided a stunning backdrop for the evening, with its picturesque views over the city and elegant table settings.

    The event kicked off with a welcome speech, followed by a delicious dinner. The students then hit the dance floor, where they danced the night away to a mix of classic hits and modern tunes.

    A special thank you goes out to the organizing committee and all the staff who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. Their efforts ensured that the Year 12 Formal was a night to remember for all who attended.

    Now that this major event has taken place, we look forward to seeing our Year 12 students continue to excel in their studies and make the most of their final year at the college.

    Kids Lit Quiz at Moreton Bay College

    We are thrilled to share the highlights of our recent excursion to Moreton Bay College, where interested Year 7 and 8 students participated in the Kids Lit Quiz! This event was a fantastic opportunity for our young readers to showcase their literary knowledge and enjoy a day filled with excitement and learning.

    The Kids Lit Quiz is an annual literature competition that brings together students from various schools to test their knowledge on a wide range of literary topics. Our students had the chance to engage in friendly competition, collaborate with their peers, and celebrate their love for reading.

    Event Highlights

    • Quiz Rounds: The students participated in multiple rounds of questions covering different genres and themes in literature. Their teamwork and collaboration were truly commendable as they tackled challenging questions with enthusiasm.
    • Recognition: While all participants received certificates of participation, there were also prizes for the top-performing teams, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

    In the weeks leading up to the quiz, our students dedicated time to reading widely and exploring various literary genres. Our school library played a crucial role by providing a special section with recommended reading materials. Additionally, practice sessions were organized to help students prepare and build their confidence.

    We extend our heartfelt thanks to the parents for their support and encouragement. Your involvement in fostering a love for literature at home and discussing the books with your children greatly contributed to their preparation and success.

    The excursion to Moreton Bay College for the Kids Lit Quiz was a memorable experience for our students. It not only broadened their literary horizons but also provided an opportunity to make lasting memories with their peers.

    Let's continue to encourage our students as they pursue their passion for literature and prepare for future literary adventures!

    Congratulations to our Term 1, Year 7 Drama Class!

    Our students have truly excelled in performing a scene from the play "The Girl Who Cried Wolf." This experience has provided a remarkable opportunity for them to immerse themselves in character development and teamwork. By focusing on character creation, they have explored various facets of their chosen roles, including motivations, emotions, and relationships with other characters.

    Working together in small groups has fostered collaboration and communication, essential skills that are valuable both on and off the stage. The incorporation of costumes and lighting elements has added another layer of creativity, allowing students to see how these components enhance storytelling and the overall atmosphere of the performance.

    Drama assessments go beyond just acting skills and knowledge; they build confidence and instill a sense of accomplishment among our young performers. Well done to all the students for their hard work and dedication!
