Prayers for Our New Pope - Pope Leo XIV

Last Friday, we welcomed Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost.
His appointment is a profound moment of faith for our entire Church community. As the appointed leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV follows in the immense footsteps of Pope Francis in unifying a global community that is grounded in Hope. With all that is happening in the world, we need the continued presence of Hope, Faith and Peace. Pope Leo XIV's first words were, "Peace be with all of you!"
On Friday morning, Archbishop Mark Coleridge shared: “Pope Leo XIV looks to be the Spirit’s surprising choice to lead a new engagement and to bring fresh hope not just to the Church but to the world”. Please read his full message here.

Presiding over his first Mass with the Cardinals who elected him, Pope Leo in his Homily took the opportunity to connect with the Augustinian tradition, the order he belonged to, by calling for better to cultivate a personal relationship with Christ; and he insisted that, without faith, life lacks meaning. Specifically, he underscored, that commitment, one of our FAMILY values, "is to move aside so that Christ may remain, to make oneself small so that He may be known and glorified, to spend oneself to the utmost so that all may have the opportunity to know and love Him."

We pray for Pope Leo XIV, asking for God's guidance as he assumes the significant role of our Church's shepherd.

Heavenly Father, You have raised Your servant, Pope Leo XIV, to the Chair of Saint Peter.
Pour out Your abundant blessings upon him.
Through him, guide Your pilgrim Church along the path to Heaven.
Grant him wisdom to discern Your will,
    Courage to fulfill it,
And charity to shepherd Your people with the Heart of Christ.

    In this time of transition,
    Bring peace to troubled hearts,
    Joy to those who suffer,
    And hope to the despairing.

May he be a faithful successor to Saint Peter,
A humble servant of Your Word,
And a fearless herald of Your Divine Mercy and Truth.
Strengthen him with the grace of the Holy Spirit,
That he may lead the Church in unity, holiness, and fidelity.

We entrust him to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
And to the prayers of all the saints.
    Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Commitment: A Reflection Through the Life of Caroline Chisholm

Commitment is one of our Family values at Chisholm and it is a principle that we strive to instill in our students. As we reflect on the significance of commitment, we draw inspiration from the life and legacy of Caroline Chisholm, a remarkable figure whose dedication to social justice and humanitarian efforts remains a beacon of hope.

Caroline Chisholm: A Life of Dedication

Born in 1808 in Northampton, England, Caroline Chisholm's early life was marked by a profound sense of duty and service. Her commitment to the welfare of others became evident early on, and she devoted herself to improving the lives of those less                                                               fortunate.  One of Caroline Chisholm's most notable contributions was her work with immigrant women in Australia. Caroline's unwavering commitment to these women led her to establish the Female Immigrants' Home in 1841. This refuge provided shelter, employment assistance, and education for immigrant women, empowering them to build better lives in their new homeland. Caroline's dedication was tireless; her work not only transformed the lives of countless women but also set a precedent for social welfare programs in Australia.

Education was another area where Caroline Chisholm's commitment shone brightly. She understood that education was a powerful tool for empowerment and social change. Caroline advocated for the establishment of schools and vocational training programs to equip immigrants with the skills they needed to succeed in their new environment.

Her dedication to education extended to her own family. Despite the challenges of her mission work, Caroline’s commitment ensured that her children received a comprehensive education. She believed that knowledge and learning were essential for personal growth and the betterment of society.

Caroline's journey was not without obstacles. She faced resistance, funding difficulties, and personal sacrifices. However, her perseverance and determination never wavered. This is an important lesson for our students; they need resilience and perseverance in pursuing their goals. By sharing Caroline's story, we remind them that setbacks are a natural part of any journey and that true commitment requires unwavering determination.

Caroline Chisholm's life is a testament to the power of commitment. Her unwavering dedication to social justice, family, community, and education serves as an inspiring example for our students. As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, we can draw valuable lessons from Caroline's legacy.

    Year 10 Formation Day

Last week our Year 10s enjoyed a Formation Day led by Michael Fitzpatrick, a longtime formation leader and friend of Chisholm Catholic College. Our students considered what values were important to them, whether the cohort was ready for senior school leadership and how they could move forward together as they prepare for Year 11 and 12. Thank you to Mrs Solomon, Mrs Ibell, Mr Bottaccio and all the teachers who joined us for a fun but reflective day.

Save the Date - Year 9 Formation

It's coming! Our social justice experience “Let Peace and Justice Flow” will be held on Friday, 6th June on the school campus from 2pm – 6pm. During this afternoon, our Year 9s will engage in activities and workshops hosted by Rosies, St. Vincent De Paul Society and Catholic Mission, as they seek to experience social justice issues such as homelessness and poverty through the eyes of those who experience it. They will also connect with many ways in which they can stand against injustice and walk shoulder to shoulder with the most vulnerable in our community.  A permission slip has been sent to families. All students are expected to attend.

A School-Based Apprenticeship may be just what you are looking for

Starting a School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship (SAT) while still at school is a real option if you're confident that you want to follow a particular Trade career after school. It's a good idea to do some work experience before you commit.

A SAT gives you a head start on the training you require while still being eligible to complete your secondary education. This training is a formal course through TAFE or other registered training organisation as well as your on-the-job-training - one day at work and 4 days at school. Your school timetable will be altered so you can meet your Apprenticeship and School obligations.

It's possible to complete a Traineeship while still at school. Apprenticeships take longer and School-Based Apprenticeships are usually converted to full-time Apprenticeships after school. Find out more about SATs at the Queensland Government Apprenticeships Info website

Work experience is a good idea

The best way to see what a job is all about is to try it. This sounds obvious however, it is often the last thing people think of when making career decisions. The following are ways you can try a job.

    • Work observation/shadowing - spend one or two days with someone already in the job
    • Work experience – spend up to a week working in the job
    • Volunteering – volunteer your services to an organisation that has jobs you are interested in
    • Part-time paid work – explore the possibility of part-time or casual work in your preferred career area
    • Join an activity group where you can try out some of the skills you will need in the job you like e.g. join the Air Force Cadets or the St John Ambulance Cadets
    • Participating in various programs associated with specific career areas for example, Engineering Link projects

The benefits of trying a job are:

    • Learning about what the job involves
    • Having a structured, supervised, hands-on experience
    • Experiencing a work environment – the world of work isn’t like school!
    • Gaining a new referee to add to your resume
    • Developing contacts that may help you gain employment in the future.

Year 10 - Start your career journey

This term, Year 10 will be having conversations about life, jobs, senior subjects and more. Your work preference matters when making career decisions

Knowing a bit about yourself will help you in your job search. To help understand what roles and work environments suit you, you need to understand your work preferences. You can do this by thinking about the types of activities you enjoy and the environments you work best in. Understanding your work preferences will help you target your job search efforts to jobs that suit you. Ask yourself the following questions:

    • Do I prefer being outdoors or inside?
    • Do I prefer working alone or in a team?
    • Am I more suited to analytical or creative activities?
    • Am I more practical (e.g. I like working with my hands), or more theoretical (e.g. I prefer research)?

    Breaking into the film industry

Few other industries hold the allure of Hollywood, with its powerful and influential A-list. But while big-name actors will always steal the spotlight (pun intended), entertainment jobs range from the creative, to the practical, to the commercial. Where there’s an actor, there’s an agent. Where there’s a set, there’s a director, a Personal Assistant (PA), a location scout and on and on. Saying you work in Hollywood can mean you work in any number of fields, from production to management to publicity. Click here to read about how ten insiders broke into the film industry with some of the tips being:

    • Create your own work and don’t be afraid to cast yourself
    • Being a production assistant is a great entry-level job
    • Stay focused, no matter what
    • Above all, build a network

Media Arts Teachers Inspire a Love for Reading with "The Invincibles"

In an exciting turn of events, two of our dedicated media arts teachers recently completed a unit centered around the comic series "The Invincibles". The unit tasked students with creating their own superhero covers, sparking creativity and engagement in the classroom.

The impact of this unit extended beyond the classroom. After completing their projects, the same students were so captivated by "The Invincibles" that they requested the library to stock the comic series. Thanks to their enthusiasm, we now have these comics available in the library, and students are eagerly borrowing them.

This wonderful unit not only showcased the talents of our media arts teachers but also encouraged a newfound love for reading among students. It's a testament to the power of innovative teaching methods and the lasting influence they can have on our students' interests and habits.

Creative Arts Update: Continuing Our Journey in Term 2

As we continue our exciting journey through Term 2, I am thrilled to share the ongoing efforts and achievements within the Creative Arts space. Our students have been actively engaging in various artistic endeavours, and their creativity and dedication are truly inspiring.

    Chisholm Connection Days

We are excited to announce the beginning of Chisholm Connection Days, where students from Years 7 to 12 have the opportunity to participate in a range of creative art experiences including, Art Club, Theatre Sports, and involvement in the upcoming College Play, 'Alice in Wonderland'. These activities provide a platform for students to collaborate, develop their skills, and immerse themselves in the creative process. Our first Chisholm Connection Day begun with a roaring success! Art Club students engaged in a day-long workshop, led by abstract artist, Jacqueline Scotcher. Students were introduced to Scotcher's artistic journey, engaged in hands-on creative sessions, and created a collaborative art project. Students were inspired by Scotcher's passion and gained valuable insights into their own artistic processes. The workshop acts as the beginning of students' creative process where they will begin to explore their own artmaking throughout the coming weeks.
