Finishing Strong
As we approach the last weeks of term, it’s vital for students to stay focused and finish strong. Research consistently shows that parental involvement significantly boosts academic achievement, motivation, and well-being (Fan & Chen, 2001; Henderson & Mapp, 2002). These final weeks often include major assessments and exams that can impact overall performance.
How can parents help?
- Revisit Goals – Sit down with your child to review progress and set short-term, achievable goals for the remaining weeks. Visible reminders of these goals can keep motivation high.
- Maintain Routines – Consistent bedtimes, balanced meals, and a quiet study space help students stay grounded and focused.
- Create a Study Plan – Encourage structured time for homework and revision. Techniques like the Pomodoro Method (25 minutes work, 5 minutes break) can improve concentration.
- Support Well-being – Adequate sleep, healthy snacks, and physical activity reduce stress and improve focus.
- Celebrate Effort – Recognise progress, not just results. Positive reinforcement builds confidence and resilience.
Further, organisation such as ReachOut offers resources to assist parents/carers. I highly recommend taking the time to review. Here is just one - Practical strategies for managing exam stress | Exams & teens. Your encouragement and involvement send a powerful message: every effort counts until the last bell rings. Together, let’s help our students finish the term with pride and purpose.
H Block Refurbishment
Late last week the fences were installed, marking the commencement of the H Block Refurbishment.
The project will see all rooms receiving a complete refurbishment, including new furniture and air conditioning. Some aspects of the facade will also be addressed so as to make it a more contemporary space.
This project is expected to be completed for the start of the 2026 school year, so we wait in anticipation to see the final product.
Unfortunately, we had sought to have a flyover walkway included in this project, but this is now no longer possible. The walkway would have connected G, H and J Blocks, permitting the lift included in this project to service the three buildings.
Every Day Counts: Attendance Matters!
Regular attendance is one of the most significant factors in a child’s academic success. Research shows that students who attend school consistently achieve at higher levels than those who are frequently absent. Even occasional absences can add up, impacting learning and long-term outcomes.
In these final weeks of school, with assessment looming or nearing completion, the belief that learning has concluded is simply folly.
Being on time each day is equally important. Arriving late means missing valuable learning time and can disrupt the flow of the classroom. We ask parents to support us by ensuring students are ready for school on time and by scheduling appointments outside school hours whenever possible. Similarly, early departures should be minimised, as every lesson does matter.
Together, we can make a difference. By prioritising attendance and punctuality, we give our students the best chance to succeed - academically, socially, and beyond.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

Parent Contact Details
Just a reminder that is important for parents and guardians to update their contact details, particularly emergency contacts, as soon as they change. Keeping contact details up to date also helps us in maintaining effective communication between the school and parents or guardians. This can include important announcements, updates on school events, and other relevant information that parents need to be aware of.

Sun Safety in Queensland
As we approach the warmer months, it's crucial to prioritise sun safety for both students and staff. Queensland is known for its high UV radiation levels, which can cause skin damage in as little as 10-15 minutes. Here are some essential tips to stay sun safe:
- Slip on Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses to shield your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays.
- Slop on Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin. Remember to reapply every two hours, especially after sweating.
- Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay in shaded areas, particularly during peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and help your body cope with the heat.
By following these simple steps, we can protect ourselves and our students from the harmful effects of the sun and enjoy a safe and healthy school year.

Year 8 Formation
Last week, the Year 8s engaged in a formation day “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made”, focusing on the recognition of our own dignity and worth through our gifts and talents, and how we can band together to serve the community. The Year 8s participated beautifully and enthusiastically, offering the themes of “connection”, “kindness” and “teamwork” as some of their takeaways from the day. Thank you to the wonderful team – Mr Glennon, Mrs Ibell, Aunty Christine and the College Guidance Counsellors, Mr Foley, Mrs Chan, Mrs Stevens and Mrs Murray.

How We Carry On: A Reflection for reaching the end of Term 3
Term 3 is rolling along, and as we approach the finish line, there are still a few important milestones ahead! We’re incredibly proud of how our student community has grown this term, with both students and staff showing dedication, teamwork, and resilience. Your ongoing support at home has been a crucial part of this journey thank you for helping your child stay focused and motivated.
With routines now firmly in place and academic expectations high, we’ve seen students rise to the challenge. There’s been much to celebrate: assemblies recognising student achievements, assessment workshops, and the recent Scholars’ Assembly, where over 250 students were applauded for their Semester 1 successes. For our Year 12 families, the excitement is building as students approach the end of their secondary journey, including the Diploma of Business Graduation—an early taste of what’s to come beyond school.
Our teaching team continues to work hard behind the scenes, developing engaging learning experiences and fair assessments designed to support every student. Looking ahead, we’re beginning something new for Year 8 in 2025: an integrated project approach, with all Year 8 Science and HASS classes joining forces. Keep an eye out for the Year 8 Project event next term—an opportunity to see the creativity and talent of our students firsthand!
As Term 3 draws to a close, we encourage you to help your child stay on track with their goals and finish the term strong. Thank you for your ongoing encouragement and involvement—it truly makes a difference. Let’s continue working together to support our students’ success!

Working Together to Address Disrespect and Non-Compliance
This year, we have noticed an increase in student disrespect and non-compliance within our community. At Chisholm Catholic College, we believe that every student has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach. To uphold these rights, we need the support of parents and caregivers in reinforcing respectful behaviour at home.
Here are some practical initiatives you can do with your child at home:
1. Model Respectful Communication
Children learn by example. Use calm, respectful language when discussing challenges, even during disagreements. Show them how to listen actively and respond thoughtfully.
2. Set Clear Expectations and Boundaries
Discuss the importance of following instructions and respecting authority. Make sure your child understands the consequences of non-compliance both at home and at school.
3. Encourage Responsibility and Accountability
Give your child age-appropriate responsibilities at home. When mistakes happen, guide them to take ownership and make amends rather than shifting blame.
4. Promote Positive Problem-Solving
Talk through scenarios where your child might feel frustrated or disagree with a rule. Help them practice respectful ways to express concerns without resorting to defiance.
5. Stay Connected with the School
Regular communication with teachers and pastoral staff ensures a consistent approach. If issues arise, work collaboratively with us to find solutions.
Together, we can foster a culture of respect and responsibility that benefits every member of our community. Thank you for your support.

Book Week House Challenge – A Huge Success
On Thursday, 22 August, the College came alive with colour and creativity as students and staff participated in our Book Week House Challenge. The event was a resounding success, with many dressing as their favourite book characters. Costumes reflected a wide range of themes, from science fiction and magical worlds to myths, heroes, and villains. The parade not only highlighted imagination and creativity, but also the enthusiasm of our community in celebrating literature.
Beyond the fun and excitement, the challenge was an opportunity to strengthen College spirit and House pride. It was wonderful to see students and staff supporting one another, cheering on their peers, and embracing the joy of reading in such a vibrant way. This celebration also marked the midpoint of Term 3, offering a timely boost of energy and connection.
Congratulations to Namatjira House, who claimed the win for their outstanding participation and creativity. Special mentions also go to the Best Group Costume: Ghostbusters, Best Individual Costume: Rohan Barraclough, and Best Staff Costume: Mrs O’Leary.
We look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate the creativity, achievements, and spirit of our students and staff.

Traffic Management Plan
All Brisbane Catholic Education schools are asked to develop a Traffic Management Plan. A copy of the Traffic Management Plan can be seen on our College website - under About Us > Policies, as well as the Parent Portal.
The purpose of the Traffic Management Plan is to outline our ways for responding to vehicle movement and access within the College grounds. Ultimately, it is to ensure that all members of our community know what the expectations are so as to keep our students safe. The safety of our staff and parents/carers is also reflected in these expectations.
For example, the speed limit within our grounds is 10km/h. There can be no excuse for any person driving beyond this established speed limit. Further, there is a designated 'drop-off' and 'pick-up' zone; outside of this space, we potentially put the safety of our students at risk. Our staff are asked to challenge drivers should this be observed.
At all stages, we ask that communication be fixed on the problem and respectful in tone. All members of our community have a Code of Conduct that are required to follow. For parents/guardians, there is the BCE Code of Conduct for Parents and Visitors.
Student drivers can only park on the grounds if they have applied for a Student Driver Permit. They are required to display this Permit on their windscreen when parking. As part of the application, they are asked to acknowledge the expectations for all drivers, can only park in the designated area (needing to park outside of the College if no spaces are available), and can only carry siblings as passengers.

Additional Support for Apprentices and Employers from 1 July 2025
From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is providing extra support for apprentices and their employers to help with cost-of-living pressures and to strengthen Australia’s skilled workforce including the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP). It is designed to encourage the growth of the workforce and expansion of the pipeline of workers training towards critical occupations supporting priority sectors. From 1 July 2025, KAP will be available to commencing or recommencing Australian Apprentices. Eligible Australian Apprentices may be eligible to receive up to $10,000 for a full-time apprenticeship and up to $5,000 for a part-time apprenticeship over the life of the Australian Apprenticeship journey. Click here for more information about:
- KAP schedule and rates
- Extension of support payments
- Higher living away from home allowance (LAFHA)
- Increased disability Australian apprentice wage support (DAAWS)
It's time to start looking for that apprenticeship!
The Queensland Government’s website has valuable information if you are looking for an apprenticeship or traineeship after school. There are two broad types of employers for apprenticeships – an individual employer or a Group Training Organisation (GTO). GTO’s pay your wages and organise your formal training but place you with host employers for your actual on-the-job training. Below are strategies you can use to find employers:
- Search the Internet for relevant websites
- Contact GTOs near you – find a list of Queensland GTOs here
- Scan school and community notice boards
- Approach previous employers - e.g. from work experience or part-time work (take a copy of your resume with you)
- Visit your school VET coordinator and Guidance Counsellor/Officer
- Talk to Australian Apprenticeships – search for the one located near you here or ring the info line at 13 38 73
- How to find and prepare for an apprenticeship, click here
Most importantly, check out your social network (parents, extended family, neighbours and friends’ parents). Usually there is someone who knows someone who might be looking for an apprentice. Don’t be afraid to approach employers who have not advertised a vacancy. It is said that up to a third of jobs are obtained through contacts rather than advertisements. Approaching employers who have not advertised a vacancy is called ‘cold calling’. Find out more about cold calling here.

Creative Arts News

Mrs. Laura Flaherty
As we approach the final weeks of Term 3, students are deep in assessment and exam preparation. While this period can be demanding, it’s also a powerful time to lean into creativity. Creative thinking isn’t just for the studio or stage, it’s a vital tool for problem-solving, self-expression, and resilience. Whether you're refining an artwork, rehearsing a performance, or composing a response in class, remember that creativity can help you stay engaged, reduce stress, and bring your best ideas forward.
We encourage all students to:
- Take short creative breaks - sketch, write, dance, or listen to music.
- Use visual or performance-based methods to revise content.
- Reflect on how your creative strengths can support your learning across subjects.
Your imagination is a resource - use it!
